2017 Burgundy Vintage Report Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom. Marcel Proust It s a cruel twist of fate that although Burgundy has never been in greater global demand, the region has been beset by low volumes due to a combination of low yields, hail, rot, and frost. Happily, with the more generous 2017 vintage, vignerons across the Côte d Or have a reason to smile. It s not a huge vintage by any means, but Burgundy has its first normal crop since That sense of happiness extends to the wines, the Jeroboams team have tasted extensively across the Côte d Or and we can t remember a more enjoyable vintage to taste at this nascent stage represents the third in a remarkable trilogy of vintages: Lighter and prettier than the intense and concentrated 2015s and 2016s, the 2017s excel for their sheer drinkability and enjoyment. Whilst the better wines will certainly cellar and reward to the demands of collectors, it is a vintage with immediate drinking appeal. The white wines from the Côte de Beaune are the best since the remarkable 2014 vintage. In general they have more verve and tension than the 2015s, and a lighter touch than the concentrated 2016s. The 2017s display fresh yellow orchard and citrus fruits, with the better Premier and Grand Crus exhibiting classy notes of minerals and white flowers. These are a modern take on classic Burgundy, very transparent and revealing of terroir, but also silky, seductive, and charming. The red wines from the Côte de Nuits are vivid and brilliant, 2017 is a vintage of immense attraction for the Burgundy drinker. The wines are lighter than 2015 and 2016, but the purity of Pinot fruit is arresting. It s a vintage where vignerons who were sensitive to the vintage have excelled, those with a lightness of touch in the cellar have made wines of delicacy, freshness, and charm. The best wines have a shimmering energy that elevates them towards greatness. Chablis could be forgiven for a certain cantankerousness, with the region once again badly affected by frost. If there is a saving grace, it is in the quality of the wines that survived another perilous spring. The 2017s are fresher and more classic than the preceding two vintages; somewhat similar to the great 2014s in style but less austere in youth offers us reasons to be cheerful, the wines are a joy to taste and have an effortless sprezzatura style. It is a vintage that will offer immediate appeal and gratification at the point of entry, with refreshingly transparent and vivid wines. The best Premier and Grand Crus offer a mellifluous pleasure that won t require an age in the cellar to unlock. Making it look this easy is hard work, and the Burgundian vignerons are on top form. 3 What is en primeur? Recommendations from Jeroboams Just like real estate, fashion or the stock market, everyone wants to know what s going to be the next big thing. What do you buy and when do you sell? The wine industry is no exception. En Primeur is the term used across the wine trade for buying wine after production but before it is bottled. It is also sometimes referred to as wine futures. Who is En Primeur for? En Primeur is perfect for those wanting to start a cellar collection or to put wine away to drink in the future. It can also be cheaper to buy wine during the period before it is bottled and sold to the open market; although prices do vary considerably from time to time, historically wine values have risen as they mature. Many domaines produce tiny quantities of wine so it is sometimes the only way to secure wine that may not be available to purchase once released. How can you guarantee the quality of the wine? Each year our experienced buyers visit domaines throughout Burgundy to taste their barrel samples and to pick the best wines for our customers to enjoy. We also have a keen eye for those wines that represent great value for money. We ship direct from the domaines to our bonded warehouse to ensure provenance of the wines. When do I get to own the wine? When purchased En Primeur becomes the property of the customer once due monies have been received. When will it be delivered? 2017 Burgundy will predominantly be shipped summer 2019, except for domaines marked with an * which are likely to be shipped winter Exact dates to be confirmed, please speak to your sales contact with any questions. How can I guarantee my wine will be safe? Your wines are fully insured. Where is the best place to store my wines? We offer professional temperature-controlled wine storage through our partners Vine. Using this facility will ensure that your wines will be perfect condition once they reach maturity in a few years time. If you would like to use this service please do ask us for more details. Each wine within the offer has been carefully chosen for its individual merits. These recommendations are designed to help you spot wines from lesser known domaines and vineyards that are truly noteworthy. Star buys Not necessarily the most expensive wines at a domaine, these stood out during tastings and are a true reflection of their terroir and the vintage. They offer outstanding quality for their price. Best value Burgundy has a wine for all occasions, and these are wines that can be enjoyed at any time of year. Not everyone wants to lay down wine for long periods, these wines will be approachable on release and offer great value. Drink dates We have provided our suggested drinking dates for your reference. These refer to when wines will, in our opinion, be fully into their stride. Many of the grander wines will continue to age beyond these dates but each person s taste varies as to when they will find a wine at peak drinking. llocated wine Sadly, given the tiny volumes produced, the demand for the top wines of Burgundy inevitably exceeds the supply. For these wines we may have to allocate them, we give priority to Jeroboams and the relevant domaine s long-standing and best customers. We will also endeavour to accommodate new purchasers, please speak to your sales contact for details. Pricing ll wines are priced per case of 6 (unless otherwise stated) in bond. Wines are shipped in bond to London City Bond, Barking where they are held free of Duty and VT. If delivery is to the Customer s home or office address, duty, delivery and VT will be charged at the prevailing rates. These rates are currently per case of 12 bottles for excise duty, delivery at and 20% VT on both the original cost, delivery charge and the duty. Delivery charges for Scotland and its Islands, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Isle of Wight will be charged at cost. If delivery is in bond to a storage account at another bonded warehouse delivery only will be charged at the prevailing rate (currently plus VT) Burgundy En Primeur 2017 Burgundy En Primeur 3

Côte de Beaune

Côte de Beaune Domaine Blain-Gagnard Domaine Blain-Gagnard was formed when Jean-Marc Blain married Claudine Gagnard, they met whilst studying oenology at Dijon. Today they run the domaine with the assistance of their son, Marc-ntonin. Jean-Marc is pleased with his charming and aromatic 2017s, describing them as a hypothetical blend of 2009 and Voltaire (François-Marie rouet) The Côte de Beaune makes up the southern portion of the Côte d Or, the heart of Burgundy. It runs from the village of Ladoix, just to the north of Beaune, down to Santenay 20km to the South. The reds can be excellent from here and tend to have more perfume and less weight than those from further North in the Côte, but it is for whites that this region is most famous. From the structured and long lived Corton- Charlemagne to the decedent weight of Bâtard-Montachet, these are the finest Chardonnays in the world Chassagne-Montrachet blend of different parcels, with 1/3 from Premier Cru vineyards, and a parcel of old vines from the 1930s. Power and concentration here, but retains poise and lightness. Less battonage used to retain freshness Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Morgeot Morgeot s soil is a deep clay, and half of the vineyard is planted with 60+ year old vines. very classy Premier Cru, floral on the nose, and juicy stone fruits on the palate. Plenty of depth in reserve for those who want to age this, but delicious on release Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Caillerets Blain-Gagnard s parcel extends from top to bottom of the vineyard, which is famous for its oyster marl terroir. Linear and focussed, somewhat veiled at this early stage but with excellent potential. Lip-smacking salinity on the finish Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru The Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru totals 1.5 hectares, Blain-Gagnard own 0.20 hectares on the south side of the Grand Cru, with the same exposure as Montrachet. romatic and spicy, richly textured and concentrated. Old vines and hen and chicken grapes make for a Criots of great depth Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru Sadly, there will be less Bâtard for the foreseeable future, 1/3 of the vineyard has been taken out and will be replanted spring Powerful and austere in youth, this is a wine of formidable structure. Ripe yellow fruits at perfect maturity, racy acidity, and pinpoint precision on the long finish Le Montrachet, Grand Cru 0.08 hectare plot on pink marl soil, located just above Domaine Leflaive s plot on the Chassagne side of the Grand Cru. Only 1 ½ barrels for the world. happy wine, velvety and harmonious. So much power, but also weightless. Magic Btls Btls Btls Btls Btls Btls Burgundy En Primeur 9

Côte de Beaune Côte de Beaune Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Céline Gagnard has taken the reins from her parents, Laurence Gagnard and Richard Fontaine, and is now working with Frédéric Robert (ex Domaine Rousseau). The domaine lost 2/3 of their production to frost in 2016, so we re delighted to see more normal volumes in 2017! Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Jean-Marc took over from his father in 1991, and currently has 11 hectares throughout Chassagne-Montrachet, which he manages alongside his wife, Nadine, and his sister, Bérénice. They are fortunate to have a high proportion of old vines, with most aged between years, and vines in their plot in Clos Saint Marc reaching 100 years. These wines have a lovely balance between immediate appeal and potential for cellaring over the medium term Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, La Grande Montagne La Grande Montagne is a brilliant terroir in Chassagne, it s a relatively warm site with lots of pebbles, and it s a suntrap that is well protected by the trees. The warmth is moderated by its altitude at the upper end of the Chassagne Premier Crus. Yellow stone fruits and stony minerality, a superb balance between power and freshness Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Vergers Les Vergers sits above Les Chenevottes, on a shallow red soil of iron over limestone. Céline notes that the wine always has higher acidity than its peers. Good energy here, with tangy citrus fruits and salty notes. 1/3 new oak used Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru Fontaine-Gagnard own three separate parcels totalling 0.33 hectares in Criots, which in 2017 has yielded 8 barrels. Only 2 barrels were produced in Gloriously expressive, a fruit salad of peaches, tropical fruits and citrus. Plenty of extract and grip on the palate, a beautiful wine Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru Fontaine-Gagnard have a single 0.3 hectare parcel of Bâtard-Montrachet, producing 9 barrels in Only 3 barrels produced in Typically powerful and brooding, this is very serious and proper! Spicy, saline, exotic, and intimidating! 2017 Le Montrachet, Grand Cru 0.08 hectare parcel on the Chassagne side, adjacent to Domaine Leflaive. It was gifted to the domaine by Edward Delagrange-Bachelet in Blend the Criots and the Bâtard together, multiply it by two and this is the result. Very classic, powerful, poised, textured, and weightless Btls Btls Btls Btls Btls Chassagne-Montrachet Ripe citrus and fresh orchard fruits, with a creamy texture and bright acidity. n excellent Chassagne villages that is a fine representation of the vintage Puligny-Montrachet, Les Noyers Brets Les Noyers Brets is located at the southern extremity of Puligny, not far from the Chassagne border and just east from Grand Cru Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet. The vines were planted in Elegance and minerality are the hallmarks here, with stone fruits and salinity to the fore Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Caillerets Les Caillerets sits on the slope above Morgeot and Champs Gains, Jean-Marc s vines were planted in Power and finesse combine here, excellent depth, but kept in check with precise mineral notes. nother terrific Caillerets from Jean-Marc, living up to its reputation as one of the finest Premier Crus of the appellation Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Vergers Clos Saint Marc The top 1er Cru of the domaine, Clos Saint Marc is a walled vineyard within Les Vergers, on the northern border with Le Montrachet. The old vines here were planted in Taut and coiled at this early stage, there is a wonderful freshness, balance, and tension here. This is approaching Grand Cru quality. Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy The Chavy family have cultivated vines in Puligny for over 200 years, and the majority of this domaine s vines were planted by Jean-Louis father and grandfather and are now years old. These are classically styled wines, with only 25% new oak for the Premier Crus. They drink well in youth but also cellar gracefully Btls Btls Btls Btls Chassagne-Montrachet Blended from five different lieux-dits, with a total area of 1.5 hectares. Ripe, crunchy red berry fruits at first, with darker cherry notes on the palate. Very silky and fresh, so much to enjoy here. Céline notes that the acidity and sugar levels are similar to 2015, which is no bad thing in our book. The quality of Chassagne rouge has been steadily on the rise, this is well worth a look, particularly given pricing in the Côte de Nuits! Btls Puligny-Montrachet, Les Charmes Jean-Louis shares this lieu-dit parcel with his brother, lain. lways one of the best value wines from Puligny, this is a step above the regular villages, with more richness and a subtle nuttiness, all held in place by fresh acidity and minerality Btls Burgundy En Primeur 2017 Burgundy En Primeur 11

Côte de Beaune Côte de Beaune 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Perrières Les Perrières is wonderfully located in the middle of the Premier Crus on the slope, with stony, chalky soil. Tightly wound, mineral and floral, with honeysuckle and almonds. Lots of energy and harmony here, finely cut and focused Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Folatières blend of two plots, one from the steepest, stoniest part of Folatières, and the other from lower down the slope on richer soil. The combination gives the wine everything it needs: acidity, structure, richness, and depth. n excellent counterpoint to Les Perrières, more generous and intense Btls Btls Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, La Garenne This parcel is at the top of the slope, exposed to the wind and planted on limestone. One of the highest altitude sites of the domaine, this is less immediately approachable than Sauzet s villages, but finer and more complex. Citrus, saline and florals here, with a bracingly fresh finish Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Champ Gain Sauzet s parcel of Champ Gain is located at the top of the vineyard, next to Premier Cru La Trufière. Reassuringly austere at this stage, with delicate white flowers, peaches, and apricots. Bracingly fresh, dry, and mineral, this is currently very tight and racy, and has an excellent future ahead Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Perrières Sauzet s Perrières is at the start of the slope, on deep clay mixed with limestone. s the name suggests, there are plenty of small stones in the vineyard that provide good drainage. Such a textbook Perrières, cool, airy, refined, and classy. Superb nervous tension on the finish Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Champ-Canet Champ-Canet is adjacent to Meursault Perrières. Sauzet s vines are old, with the majority replanted in the 1940 and one small parcel of 90 year old vines. The small berries produced here yield a wine of excellent concentration, with riper fruits and more depth and spice than the other 1er Crus Btls Btls Btls Btls *Domaine Etienne Sauzet Winemaker Benoît Riffault was relieved to have a more normal growing season in 2017, with little frost and disease pressure. He believes that the key to the vintage was in finding the correct picking date, and that his 2017s have the fruit of 2009, the density of 2010, and the freshness of 2014 Domaine Patrick Javillier Patrick Javillier took over his father s tiny Meursault domaine in 1974, and has gradually increased his holdings, he now has ten hectares that are 80% white and 20% red. We tasted with Patrick s daughter, Marion, who described 2017 as a terroir vintage, with well-defined differences between each cuvée Bourgogne, La Tufera From one of the finest producers in Puligny-Montrachet, this is a Bourgogne that is in a category of its own. Not an anonymous blend from across Burgundy, this is a blend of three parcels of old vines that are located just below the Puligny villages vineyards. Initially fruit-forward, with excellent richness, the finish is long, mineral, and classy. Excellent value considering the quality of this baby Puligny Puligny-Montrachet It s becoming increasingly fashionable in Burgundy to produce mico-cuvées from individual lieu-dit sites, but Sauzet stick to their tradition of crafting a textbook example of Puligny-Montrachet villages by blending 12 different parcels from across the village. Long may it continue! classic Puligny villages, with excellent balance and a wonderful nutty, saline finish Btls Btls Meursault, Les Clousots Les Clousots is a blend of two lieux-dits: Les Clous near the top of the village and Les Crotots next to 1er Cru Les Poruzots. Patrick also blends the names to give Les Clousots. Very pure and vibrant, with richer apricot and ginger flavours. The finish is pleasingly dry, which a superb balance between purity and opulence Meursault, Tête de Murger Tête de Murger is a blend of Casse-Têtes on the Meursault hillside and Les Murgers de Monthelie on the Volnay hillside. Very pretty and floral on the nose, but the palate is a step up with fleshier stone fruits. With a touch of chamomile and honey on the finish, this is excellent Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru From a small parcel in Pougets, just below the tree-line on the loxe side of the hill. Tightly wound and poised at this stage, soaked in minerals and with an exotic whiff of lemongrass. Superb purity and energy through to the long finish Btls Btls Btls Burgundy En Primeur 2017 Burgundy En Primeur 13

Côte de Beaune Côte de Beaune Domaine Michel Bouzereau Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau took over winemaking responsibility from his famous father Michel around fifteen years ago. Whilst respecting the traditions of the domaine and his father, under Jean-Baptiste the wines have a lightness of touch and a vibrancy that makes them even more appealing. The 2017s are clearly the best wines made here since the acclaimed 2014s Meursault Premier Cru, Genevrières The vines were badly affected by frost in 2016, this is a welcome return to form. From vines planted in 1951, located just north of Premier Cru Perrières. Pure citrus and stone fruits, initially quite restrained, but revealing surprising concentration on the palate. Very long and focused, with impeccable balance and a touch of flint on the finish Meursault Premier Cru, ux Perrières Planted in 1937, this plot is situated slightly above the main body of Perrières, next to Coche Dury. Pungently mineral and saline, with ginger and white pepper. Quite closed at this early stage, this is much more about terroir than fruit at present, a wonderfully classic Perrières where you can really taste the rocks and stones. Superb Btls Btls Meursault, Les Grands Charrons Les Grands Charrons is blended from plots on the limestone soils of the slope, and the heavier clay soils lower down. The age of the vines varies from 25 to 65 years, adding both fruit and complexity. Expressive in the glass, bright acidity and nutty, creamy notes. Jean-Baptiste always says that this is best drunk in its first flush of youth, and it is already irresistible Meursault Premier Cru, Les Charmes Dessus Les Charmes Dessus is at the upper end of Les Charmes, just below Meursault Perrières. step up in focus and intensity, this feels at once finely chiselled and expansively fruited. moreish tang of salt and bracing acidity make this a very classy Charmes Dessus Meursault Premier Cru, Les Genevrières Genevrières is perhaps the finest vineyard of the domaine, and has the greatest ageing potential. This is taut at present, with floral notes and citrus peel. The palate is vibrant, so much energy present in the glass. This is an exciting Premier Cru that needs time to reveal itself Btls Btls Btls Volnay Premier Cru, Les Santenots Santenots is in Meursault, at the border with Volnay. Santenot s red wines are allowed to use the Volnay appellation. The soil type here is equally suited for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Very pure and vibrant, with violet floral notes and cherries and berries. Pretty on the palate, with everything in proportion, there s a lovely balance of fruit, acid, and tannins Btls *Domaine Darviot-Perrin With the exception of one plot planted in 1982, the minimum vine age at Darviot- Perrin is 50 years and some are over 100 years old. They favour old selection massale vines and their cellars are amongst the coolest in Burgundy, resulting in slow fermentations. They adopt an organic mind-set but retain flexibility by remaining uncertified. Didier Darviot learned his craft from his wife s father, Pierre Perrin. Today, the husband and wife team are ably assisted by their daughter, lix Meursault, Clos de la Velle Clos de la Velle is a small, walled vineyard at the eastern extremity of Meursault, by the border with Puligny-Montrachet. It s owned entirely by the family, and was planted in the 1950s. Pure and vibrant, with white and yellow orchard fruits. There s a good seam of minerality running through the palate, this is an excellent representation of the terroir for its classification. super Meursault villages! Btls Domaine Paul Pillot Paul Pillot is in the very top echelon of domaines in Chassagne- Montrachet and Paul s son Thierry is producing wines of rare energy and excitement. Thierry was on excellent form during our visit, no doubt relieved to have a more normal crop after the trials and tribulations of His 2017s are remarkably fresh, vivid, and transparent of their terroirs Bourgogne ligoté Many of the top growers in Burgundy have a love affair with ligoté, the other white grape of the region. The vines here are very old, picked by hand, and the wine is aged in 2 year old barrels. When made in this way, ligoté is capable of brilliant things, and Thierry s 2017 has great purity and transparency, with racy acidity and a stony, mineral component. Brilliant value, and well worth discovering Bourgogne Blanc It s rare to find a white Burgundy that is this good at this price point. Showcasing all of the purity and crystalline fruit that is the hallmark of the domaine, this is a mouthwatering 2017 with bright citrus fruits and mineral salts. serious Bourgogne Blanc that will be a lot of fun to drink Btls Btls Burgundy En Primeur 2017 Burgundy En Primeur 15

Côte de Beaune Côte de Beaune 2017 Saint-ubin Premier Cru, Les Pitangerets Pitangerets is located between Le Charmois and Les Combes au Sud, on the border with Chassagne-Montrachet. It s a very cool site, with limestone soil, and was devastated by frost in The 2017 is a very welcome addition to the offer, with lively citrus fruits and a hint of smoke. Great energy and mouthfeel, this is excellent Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Champs-Gains Les Champs-Gains lies just below Caillerets, but on very different clay terroir. The vines are low yielding and produce spicy and rich wines of great intensity. Thierry s early picking style is a great match for the terroir, the balance here is impeccable Btls Btls Chevalier-Montrachet, Grand Cru Maison Roche de Bellène. Floral and vibrant, masses of stone fruit and some tropical notes. The plumpness of the fruit is perfectly offset by the nervous tension from the acidity and a strongly mineral note on the finish. Wonderful Le Montrachet, Grand Cru Maison Roche de Bellène. Reserved power on the nose, peaches and passionfruit. Stricter on the palate, with a profoundly saline note reining in the fruit. Seriously impressive depth and concentration here Btls 1, Btls 3, Bourgogne Pinot Noir Bourgogne Rouge from top producers is always the inside buy for those who want very smart everyday drinkers. Produced from two old vine plots just outside Chassagne with an average age of 35 years, this is bursting with pretty strawberry and cherry fruits. Succulent and crunchy, with perfume and energy, this has so much appeal. Maison Roche de Bellène & Domaine de Bellène Nicolas Potel has access to some of the best Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in the region for his Maison Roche de Bellène wines. In recent years these wines have been consistently matching or bettering the critical scores from some of the top producers in the Côte d Or, often at a fraction of the price. Nicolas has also been steadily acquiring parcels of old vines for his Domaine de Bellène wines, which are all grown using biodynamic methods Btls Savigny-les-Beaune Blanc Domaine de Bellène. blend of three different vineyards: Les Planchots, ux Champs des Pruniers, and Dessus de Vermots. Nicolas considers this to be the flagship white wine of the domaine, lavishing it with the same attention as his top Premier and Grand Crus. The vines age from years of age, this is a beautiful and refined white Burgundy, with silky texture, a generous mouthfeel, and a cool saline note. Buy it, serve it blind, and fool friends and family. Rejoice in the value and the quality Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru Maison Roche de Bellène. Mineral and saline, quite unfriendly at this early stage. Everything you would want and expect in a Bâtard! Saturated with yellow fruits, and spicy on the finish. Deserves time to slumber Btls Btls 1, Beaune Premier Cru, Cuvée Cinquantenaire Vieilles Vignes Domaine de Bellène. blend of 5 top Beaune Premier Crus (Pertuisots, Montée Rouge, Les Bressandes, Clos du Roi, Reversées) that was first produced in 2014 to honour the 50th anniversary of Nicolas father making wine in Burgundy. Nicolas is justifiably proud of this cuvée, which seduces with crunchy bramble fruits and violet florals. The palate is powerfully built but silky, there is already so much to enjoy but it will age wonderfully. Beaune Premier Crus have been under the radar for a long time, this one is well worth seeking out Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Lavaut Saint-Jacques Roche de Bellène. Lavaut Saint-Jacques is the largest, and one of the most famous Gevrey Premier Crus. Some people say Lavaut, others say Lavaux, both are permitted. Red and black berries, violets, and a touch of coffee. Quite muscular on the palate, with a touch of spicy oak adding extra complexity. Polished and stylish Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Chaignots Domaine de Bellène. Chaignots is in the northern part of Nuits-Saint-Georges, on limestone soil, and there is always a hint of Vosne-Romanée to the wines. Really expressive, with sloes, smoke, and liquorice. The palate is powerful, we are still in NSG here, but it is built around intensity of fruit rather than weight of tannin Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, Les Groseilles Roche de Bellène.The Premier Cru Les Groseilles is located just east of the village, sandwiched between Premier Crus Les Noirots, Les Combottes, and ux Beaux Bruns. Groseilles are redcurrants, which is immediately apparent on the nose! savoury and well-defined palate, with a long, floral and perfumed finish. There are not many hidden bargains in Chambolle, this is definitely one of them Vosne-Romanée, Quartiers de Nuits Domaine de Bellène. Planted in 1927, this brilliant little lieu-dit is tucked away in the corner where Clos Vougeot meets Echézeaux and Grands Echézeaux. Bursting with dark, ripe fruits and smoky, spicy notes, this is a vibrant Vosne villages that will charm on release but cellar well over the medium term Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Les Suchots Domaine de Bellène. Premier Cru Les Suchots separates Echézeaux from Romanée- Saint-Vivant, and is one of Vosne s finest Premier Crus. This is the jewel in the domaine s holdings, with hectares that were planted in Very classic, with fresh and fragrant fruits and florals. Finely cut on the palate, with a touch of spice adding complexity Btls Btls Btls Btls Btls Btls Burgundy En Primeur 2017 Burgundy En Primeur 17

Côte de Beaune Côte de Beaune 2017 Corton Le Rognet, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. Le Rognet is on the Ladoix side of the hill, typically making a rather more silky style of Corton. Lively red fruits to the fore, with admirable density on the palate. The classic character of Corton is here, but in a more approachable, suave form. dark horse that is well worth a look and likely to be excellent value Griotte-Chambertin, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. With a total area of 2.69 hectares, Griotte-Chambertin is the smallest Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin, and in the Côte d Or only Criots-Bâtard- Montrachet, Romanée-Conti, and La Romanée are smaller. Cherries, coffee and spices, Griotte is typically the most approachable of the Gevrey Grand Crus and this is no exception. Plenty of drive and energy on the palate, this is very pretty and will require only moderate cellaring Clos de la Roche, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. Exotically spiced and richly textured, this is a Grand Cru on a grand scale. The tannins are velvet textured, with well-integrated oak adding structure and class. The swathes of juicy fruit and the density of the body will knit together impressively as it ages Echézeaux, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. Considering the relative size of the appellation, the quality of Echézeaux has been very high in 2017, and this is no exception. So fresh on the initial attack, with great transparency of terroir allowing the Pinot fruit to shine. Subtle oak frames the tannins in the background Grands-Echézeaux, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. Darker in profile, this is more subtle than the Echézeaux, but also has more depth. lready very complete, this shows excellent breeding and very fine structure Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. Fresh berries and riper compote notes, Nicolas Bèze is extravagantly fruited in The palate is silk and velvet, the tannins are on a large scale but already supple and refined. This is really very good Chambertin, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. The 2015 Chambertin was our best selling Grand Cru of the campaign, and the 2017 is a tremendous effort that should give the 2015 a run for its money! t once perfumed, silky, structured and deep, this already has a wonderful persistence and clarity of terroir. Bravo Nicolas Richebourg, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. Brooding at this early stage, all power and potential. Great depth of fruit here, all tightly squeezed by finely textured tannins. Violets, black cherries and spiced plum on the nose, but the real story here is the palate, which is lavishly textured with chocolate tannins, berry fruits and earl grey tea adding freshness. The finish is deep and rich, with a stony minerality adding graphite to the party. This merits time in the cellar to really blossom and reveal its full character Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grand Cru Roche de Bellène. What a contrast to the Richebourg, this is pretty and delicately structured, built around energy and finesse rather than depth and concentration. Not to be underestimated, it may be on a different path to the Richebourg, but it will be equally worthy of a place in the cellar. 12 Côte de Beaune Côte de Beaune Domaine Bachelet-Monnot Brothers Marc & lex formed this exciting domaine in 2005, with the assistance of their father (Jean-François), and their Uncle Monnot. Located in the beautiful village of Dezize-lès-Maranges, it s well worth the diversion south from Chassagne- Montrachet and Santenay. Marc Bachelet gave us an early contender for quote of the vintage, 2017 has the concentration of 2015 and the elegance of These wines were an immediate hit with customers when we offered them for the first time last year, and they have been receiving great critical acclaim to boot Bourgogne Blanc ll of the fruit comes from Bourgogne classified vineyards within the commune of Puligny-Montrachet. The deeper soil here gives more weight and density to the wine, which has a lovely vanilla spice note. Despite the fruit concentration, the finish is dry and saline. The best of both worlds Btls Btls Bourgogne Rouge Bachelet-Monnot s Bourgogne Rouge is a blend from Maranges, Puligny-Montrachet, and the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. The vine age here is seriously impressive for a red of this level, with 60, 70, and 80 year old vines in the blend. Everything you d want from a Bourgogne rouge, with pretty, fresh Pinot fruit and a lip-smacking finish Maranges Premier Cru, La Fussière Bachelet-Monnot own eleven acres of La Fussière, making it the most significant holding of the domaine. The average age of the vines is 45 years, and some are as old as 80 years old. The 2016 prompted Neal Martin to write that Bachelet Monnot s Maranges Premier Crus may be the best values in the entire Côte d Or, and on this kind of form it s difficult to disagree. Eleven different parcels are blended to make this cuvée, which is very, very pretty, with a high-toned nose of plums and sweet spices. The palate is delicately structured and refined, this is an airy and admirable Premier Cru that punches well above its weight Btls Btls Domaine ntonin Guyon Domaine ntonin Guyon has an enviable portfolio, comprising 48 hectares across the Côte d Or. They are currently in the process of obtaining organic certification, with the first vintage scheduled to be We tasted the 2017s with Dominique Guyon, who was pleased to report more normal production levels this year. He believes that that the wines will drink well young, but will also age well. One of our favourite places for well-priced, classically styled Burgundies Meursault Premier Cru, Les Charmes Dessus 0.69 hectare parcel on white marl soil. Les Charmes Dessus is in the upper part of Meursault Charmes, next to Premier Crus Les Genevrières and Les Perrières. Balances the opulence of Meursault with more restrained mineral notes, and finishes with a note of orange zest Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Pucelles The most highly prized of Puligny s Premier Crus, Les Pucelles is located adjacent to Grand Crus Bâtard and Bienvenues-Bâtard Montrachet. Planted on a combination of clay over limestone, the typical production is only three barrels. Steely and well defined, this is finely textured and piercingly mineral, with smoky notes at the last Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 0.85 hectare blend of two parcels, with the majority of the blend coming from Le Charlemagne, complemented by a parcel from Le Corton. Pound for pound, this is perhaps the best quality/value white wine of the vintage. This brims with energy and vibrancy, with chalky, mineral notes and citrus fruits. Deceptive depth on the palate, this is very proper Btls Btls Btls Gevrey-Chambertin, La Justice ntonin Guyon own 2.58 hectares of this lieu-dit that is located just east of the village of Gevrey. Much darker on the nose than La Justice, this is earthy and rich, with notes of chocolate and spice. n excellent candidate for the cellar Volnay Premier Cru, Clos des Chênes 0.87 hectare parcel of 40 year old vines in Clos des Chênes, which Dominique describes as the Chambolle-Musigny of the Côte de Beaune. Bouchard struck a deal with Henri Boillot in 1998, and swapped a plot of Volnay Fremiets for this plot of Les Cailles. Very nicely judged Beaune du Château Premier Cru Bouchard have been producing this cuvée since 1907, which is a blend of 17 different Premier Crus. The plots are vinified separately and then blended, creating a wine that is more complex than the sum of its parts. Forward and fruity on the nose, with floral notes. The palate has good structure, with gently gripping tannins and a spicy finish Btls Btls Beaune Grèves Premier Cru, Vignes de L Enfant Jésus Grèves is widely considered to be the best of the Beaune Premier Crus, and is the largest at 32 hectares. Bouchard own 4 hectares, and this legendary cuvée comes from their very best parcels in the centre of the vineyard. Blueberries and violets on the nose, the palate is airy and silky. This is a departure from the typically dense and earthy style of Beaune, with suave tannins and excellent transparency Btls Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Bouchard Père et Fils have built up the biggest domaine in the Côte d Or, with 130 hectares of vines that includes 12 hectares of Grand Cru and 74 hectares of Premier Cru. Cellar master Frédéric Weber is pleased with their 2017s, believing that the key to the vintage was to pick at the right point of maturity Meursault Premier Cru, Genevrières Bouchard have 2.45 hectares of Genevrières, bought in 1976, and split across two parcels. Frédéric notes that it s a site with high maturity potential, but also excellent balance. That s certainly the case here, with opulent stone and tropical fruits mingling with fresher citrus and saline notes Btls Le Corton, Grand Cru Bouchard s 3.6 hectares on the hill are east facing at an altitude of 320m, making it the highest Pinot Noir plantings on the hill, and the highest vineyard in Bouchard s portfolio. Exposed to the north wind, it s a very fresh and healthy terroir and is farmed biodynamically. Black and blue fruits, which mesh with mineral notes of earth and smoke. Grippy tannins remind that we re high up on the hill, a very true and classic Corton Grand Cru. 15 Côte de Nuits Domaine Faiveley Domaine Faiveley is one of the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, with 125 hectares under their control, including many of the Côte d Or s top Premier and Grand Crus. Named after the main town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, whose wines tend towards sturdiness and longevity, the quality arguably reaches its apogee in Vosne-Romanée, where the finest Grand Crus are located. Those seeking elegance and perfume would be best served heading to Chambolle-Musigny, whilst for raw power, Gevrey-Chambertin is king Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Les Cazetiers Faiveley are now the biggest holder of Les Cazetiers, owning approximately half of the appellation with 4.05 hectares. Well structured, this is a very complete Pommard Btls Btls Mazis-Chambertin, Grand Cru Faiveley s plots are in the upper Mazis, generally regarded as the best part of the Grand Cru. The majority of the vines were planted in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. This is a beautiful Mazis, with the textbook combination of aroma on the nose and power on the palate. His childhood friend rnaud Mortet was amongst the first to highlight the quality here, and Sebastien is steadily building a reputation for his wines. Having worked at Dujac and Mèo-Camuzet prior to joining his father at the family domaine, each vintage sees a further refinement in style and quality. These are happy wines, we d be delighted to have any of them in the cellar Bourgogne Rouge blend of two parcels, one in Chambolle-Musigny with 60 year old vines, and the second in Gevrey-Chambertin with 50 year old vines. Less floral than the other Chambolles in the line-up, rather more brooding at this early stage. There s more than a hint of Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares here, such is the power and persistence across the palate Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, Clos la Riotte This has to be one of the best stories in Burgundy, the walled vineyard is owned collectively by the village of Morey and is leased to the domaine with the least Premier Cru vineyards, Odoul-Coquard. Sebastien makes all of the wine, but a third of the production is given back to the village for fêtes, parties etc. The clos has high walls and low trained vines, with rocky soil, and it is always amongst the first to be picked. Spicy, wild, richly fruited, this is absolutely textbook Morey-Saint-Denis! So much appeal here already, the palate takes on a more savoury edge at the finish, it will have a wide drinking window Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, ux Combottes ux Combottes is the southern extension of Grand Cru Latricières-Chambertin and Odoul-Coquard are the only domaine with vines running north to south, giving complete coverage of the terroir. Local legend has it that ux Combottes was refused classification as a Grand Cru of Gevrey because the majority of vineyard owners were based in Morey and the village of Gevrey refused to give them the accolade. Lots of class here, swathes of berries, cherries and plums, coated in dark chocolate and spiced coffee. This is a very proper and serious Gevrey that will be a lot of fun to drink. It s highly recommended Btls Btls Btls Btls Nuits-Saint-Georges, Les rgillats Les rgillats is located directly above the village of Nuits, on the Vosne side. It s mid slope, at the same elevation as Premier Cru Le Damodes. With 70 year old vines, these are the oldest holdings of the domaine. Such a complex nose and palate, with wild, spicy berry fruits and floral perfume. The vibrancy here is really impressive, rounded in the mouth, with a subtle mineral and saline note on the finish. This is punching well above its weight Vosne-Romanée The vines here are now 60 years old. Next year Sebastien will add Vieilles Vignes to the label, but primarily to wind his father up, who is the same age! Textbook village Vosne, with plenty of dark fruit, spice, and floral notes Btls Btls Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru blend of two parcels, 85% of the blend is from 60 year old vines and 15% from 70 year old vines. The vines are on average 50 years old and 3 barrels have been produced in Red and black fruits, pungently mineral, with notes of smoke and flint. We tasted the 2017s with winemaker Thomas Dinel, we ve never been so impressed by a flight of wines here! Prices remain incredibly fair for wines that are beautifully charming and drinkable at the entry level, but compelling and serious at the top end. Volumes available are tiny across the range Savigny-les-Beaune Premier Cru, Les Vergelesses ll domaine fruit, farmed organically on south facing steep slopes of chalk and marl. Forget that we re in Savigny for a moment, this is made in exactly the same way as their Corton-Charlemagne. You can tell the care that has been lavished on the wine, which shows attractive floral and stone fruits, bright acidity, and a piercingly mineral note. Brilliant value! 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, bbaye de Morgeot bbaye de Morgeot is a small Premier Cru located within the much larger Morgeot vineyard. Lots of fun, buy a case, get it delivered, and drink it Btls Nuits-Saint-Georges, Les Longecourts Only 4 barrels. Jeroboams favourite since we first tasted it back in 2014, this is an old vine parcel located under Premier Cru Les Saint Georges. 100% whole bunch and 50% new oak. The purity and clarity here is really expressive, this is on great form right from the off. The small berries that this vineyard produce yield wine of great concentration, but in 2017 the wine is livelier and prettier than ever before. Badly frost affected in 2016, it has bounced back this year with a wine that is very much on the front foot Volnay Premier Cru, Frémiets This is a domaine vineyard, located at a wonderful mid-slope position, next to the holdings of the Marquis d ngerville at the south of the appellation. Only 20% new oak, the wine is limpid and transparent, with a haunting Pinot perfume of red fruit. Plenty of energy on the palate, with a lightly grippy finish that suggests this has the substance to age Vosne-Romanée, Champs Perdrix Champs Perdrix is directly above La Tâche and La Grande Rue, looking down over the most expensive vineyard real estate in the world. It s the best spot in the Côte de Nuits to sit on the wall and look out at the Grand Crus and the village below. Highly perfumed, floral and red fruited, this is a deliciously supple and pretty Pinot that immediately impresses with its charm and finesse Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, Clos des Ormes Clos des Ormes is just underneath Clos de la Roche and almost touches Mazoyéres Chambertin. The 65 year old vines grow on a similar terroir, with a shallow surface layer of clay over rocky limestone. Lots of energy here, with a silky mouthfeel Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Champeaux Premier Cru Champeaux is north of Les Cazetiers, sitting high on the hill at the limit of the appellation. Only 2 barrels produced, 100% destemmed. The soil here is rich in limestone, and the wine has a wonderful purity of fruit. Good ripeness, giving a suggestion of sweetness, but the palate is reassuringly dry and savoury. Very sympathetically made, the structure of the vineyard doesn t need any winemaking additions, and this has been allowed to shine Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Les Suchots Les Suchots sits in between the Grand Crus of Vosne-Romanée and is one of the most famous Premier Crus of the appellation. 100% whole bunch and 50% new oak. The darker side of Pinot fruit is in evidence here, with subtle florals and sweet spices. 19 Côte de Nuits Côte de Nuits Domaine Jean-Marc Millot Jean-Marc started bottling his own wines in 1992, but it wasn t until 1997 that he took control of other family vineyards to make the impressive range that we see today. We ve been fans of the domaine for some time now, and it s great to see Jean-Marc giving his daughter lix a free rein to make the wines as she sees fit. Last year s 2016 offer was vastly oversubscribed, in part due to their rarity. These 2017s should be in high demand for their sheer quality and drinkability. Domaine Henri Gouges Henri Gouges is one of the historic domaines of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and was one of the early pioneers of domaine bottling in the 1920s. The domaine owns 14.5 hectares, with their 12 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards remaining unchanged since the 1930s. domaine with a formidable reputation behind them, producing wines with a proven capacity to age. This wine comes from a single vineyard, ux Faulques, which is only about 500m south of the famous Clos de la Marechale; the Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru that is wholly owned by Frédéric Mugnier. The Millot s own 1.8 of the 2.8 hectare ux Faulques vineyard, their oldest vines are years old. Year on year, this is one of our favourite wines to buy and drink ourselves. The 2017 is lighter and prettier than the previous couple of vintages, it immediately seduces the taster with pure Pinot fruit and silky structure. This is proper Burgundy, and probably the best value Pinot you can buy from the Côte d Or Echézeaux, Grand Cru This is the classic Echézeaux cuvée of the domaine, which is a blend of three parcels in Poulaillères, Echézeaux du Dessus, and Clos Saint Denis. Fragrant and lifted, with sweetly fruited Pinot berries and cherries, and subtle sous bois and truffle notes. Silky tannins discretely add form and shape, this is a very refined and classy Echézeaux Btls Btls Nuits-Saint-Georges n assemblage of seven plots, primarily from south of the village. This has all of the sweet dark fruit and spice that we ve come to expect, but the 2017 is a much friendlier rendition, bursting forth from the glass and determined to reveal all of its sappy fruit and fine-grained tannins. Lots of energy and focus here, this is a gorgeous villages from Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru, Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges Everyone loves a monopole in Burgundy, they are some of the region s most prized (and expensive) wines. There s La Tâche and Romanée-Conti from DRC, Clos des Ruchottes from Rousseau, and La Romanée from Liger-Belair, to name a few. One monopole that flies firmly under the radar is Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges from Gouges. Henri Gouges was so taken by this clos that he held off replanting for as long as possible, it was eventually replanted in the 1970s. Those vines are now of an age where they re producing top quality fruit. The 2017 is aromatically complex, with a real intensity of fruit and chocolate-dusted tannins on the palate. The acidity is perhaps the most impressive aspect here, giving real drive and verve across the palate Btls Btls Clos Vougeot Grand Maupertuis, Grand Cru If you had to pick one part of Clos Vougeot to produce wine from, it would be Grand Maupertuis, located at the top of the Clos and only separated from Grands- Echézeaux by the wall. Happily, the domaine s plot runs from the top to the bottom of Grand Maupertuis, neighbouring nne Gros. Densely fruited for the vintage, with red and black fruits that are lifted by rose petal aromas. Sweetness of fruit and savoury structure mingle together on the palate, there is a lot of wine here for the money and it has everything it needs to age well. The best wines from Clos Vougeot remain undervalued relative to the other Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits Btls Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Les Pruliers Henri Gouges acquired the domaine s two plots in 1920, which were subsequently replanted in Les Pruliers often expresses the more mineral side of the appellation, but in 2017 this is nicely cushioned by crunchy red and black fruits. The palate is savoury, excellent transparency of terroir here, with a long finish that is very clean and saline Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Les Vaucrains collective sigh of relief for Les Vaucrains, which has yielded 12 barrels in 2017 following a mere 4 barrels in the frost affected 2016 vintage. s enjoyable as the other wines are, this is a step up in depth and complexity, with darker berry fruits and plenty of sous bois and mineral characters. Firmer tannins grip the palate, lifted by floral notes, the finish shows power, focus, and precision. Vaucrains means worth nothing in old French, due to the poorness of the soil which made it unsuitable for agriculture. It s very clearly worth something! 20 Côte de Nuits Domaine François Bertheau François has 6.2 hectares of vines in Chambolle Musigny, with half in the villages appellation and the remainder in some of the top Premier Crus and Grand Cru Bonnes Mares. He s the fifth generation of his family at the estate, he was been in charge since His vines have an average age of 50 years and with such good raw materials, François practices minimal intervention in the winery. Following a brutal 2016 crop where over 50% of the fruit was lost, we re relieved to have more normal volumes in These are some of our favourite wines from the appellation, with all of the textbook purity, transparency, and charm that you could wish for from Chambolle. *Domaine François Lamarche Domaine François Lamarche are sole owners of La Grande Rue, one of the four Grand Cru monopoles of Vosne-Romanée. The current generation, cousins Nicole and Nathalie Lamarche, have re-established the domaine to the very top tier of Vosne-Romanée. Happily, volumes are more normal in 2017, following the devastating frost in Chambolle-Musigny Francois Chambolle villages is aged in 50% barrel and 50% large oak foudre. Crunchy summer berries, lifted by floral notes, this is very fresh and pretty. This is a textbook, vivacious Chambolle-Musigny villages; a must have in the cellar for Burgundy aficionados Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 1 hectare blend of four different 1er Cru parcels: Baudes, Groseilles, Gruenchers, and Noirots. Slightly darker fruit character than the villages, with wonderful purity of fruit. The palate is slightly tighter, with more minerality adding complexity, wrapped up in silky tannins Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, Les Charmes This is a 0.66 hectare parcel in Premier Cru Les Charmes. Sometimes a cliché exists for a reason; this is a very charming Chambolle Charmes! Broader across the palate, with expansive red and black fruits and vibrant floral notes. The exuberance of the fruit is reined in by a lip-smacking saline note on the finish Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, Les moureuses 0.32 hectares, producing six barrels. Very pretty on the nose, red berries and Turkish Delight. Superb integration of tannins and acidity on the palate, tempered by a stony minerality Bonnes-Mares, Grand Cru Bertheau s Bonnes Mares comes from a 0.34 hectare parcel in the Terres Blanches section of the Grand Cru, on the Chambolle side. Spicy and richly fruited, with a more muscular palate that is quite the contrast to the moureuses. Earthy, meaty, and exotic on the finish, with an umami note at the very end Btls Btls Btls Btls 1, Btls 1, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Les Suchots Lamarche have 0.60 hectares of Les Suchots split into two parcels, with 40+ year old vines. Light on its feet, very pretty red fruits and florals. There is great intensity of flavour here, but built around a supple frame that is remarkably weightless. Lots of salinity on the finish, very fine Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, ux Malconsorts Malconsorts is perhaps Vosne s most sought after Premier Cru, and is located next to La Tâche. Lamarche have two parcels, one at the top and one at the bottom, totalling 0.60 hectares. Reserved power here, darkly fruited, mineral, and structured. superb effort, you taste this and wonder where their Grand Crus are going to take you Clos de Vougeot, Grand Cru 1.35 hectare blend of three parcels, two at the top and bottom of Baudes Basses and the third in Montiotes Hautes, underneath Musigny. stylistic change here from the Vosne Grand Crus, this is darker and more savoury, with tannins that are a step up in structure and grip. Good tension and minerality here, a very fine Clos Vougeot that needs time in the cellar Echézeaux, Grand Cru Lamarche s Echézeaux is a 1.31 hectare blend of Les Champs Traversins, Les Cruots ou Vignes Blanches, and Clos Saint Denis. There is something disarming about the wine, it s so limpid initially, but then the depth of fruit and exotic spices grab you. Bright acidity and silky tannins complete the palate, which returns to earth on a saline note Btls Btls Btls Btls Grands-Echézeaux, Grand Cru From a single 0.3 hectare parcel. wonderful nose of violet florals and dark fruits, something wild and exotic here. The palate has such a breath-taking breadth of fruit here, caressed by silky tannins and the perfect acidity that leads through to the finish La Grande Rue, Grand Cru La Grande Rue is the pride of the domaine, a 1.65 hectare monopole that runs parallel to Romanée-Conti. Deceptive in its structure and beauty, this is initially quiet on the nose, but with time in the glass its breeding becomes apparent. wine of supreme balance and finesse, with an ethereal quality that makes it both persistent and elusive in the glass. The 2017 is the third vintage in a remarkable trilogy for this Grand Cru Btls 1, Btls 2, Burgundy En Primeur 2017 Burgundy En Primeur 37

Côte de Nuits Côte de Nuits Domaine Bruno Clavelier Bruno started at the domaine in 1987, so the 2017 vintage is particularly special as it marks his 30th vintage. Bruno farmed organically and biodynamically long before it was trendy, following his grandfather who preferred to use natural treatments rather than chemicals. Bruno believes that great wines come from respecting the terroir and the exchange between the soil, the plant, and the light. His 2017s are particularly transparent and beautiful in their purity Clos des Lambrays, Grand Cru The 2017 Clos des Lambrays is raised in 50% new oak and 50% one year old barrels. Strawberries and cream initially on the nose, brightly fruited and airy. The palate is reassuringly darker and more savoury, with a maturity of tannins and purity of fruit that is seriously impressive. This patrician Grand Cru has entered a new era this decade and is firing on all cylinders Btls 1, Vosne-Romanée, Les Hautes Maizières Les Hautes Maizières sits under Premier Cru Les Suchots and borders Romanée- Saint-Vivant at one corner and Clos Saint Denis at another. The soil here is deeper, with clay lying over the same limestone subsoil that reappears in Mazis-Chambertin. Bruno has 0.48 hectares of 65 year old vines. Richly and densely fruited, with notes of garrigue adding complexity. Plenty of stuffing here, with mouth-coating tannins and a long finish. terrific lieu-dit from Vosne! 2017 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Les Beaux Monts Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts is east-facing, and benefits from early morning sunshine whilst avoiding much of the intensity of the afternoon heat. iry and cool, with crunchy red berry fruits. Very pure and silky on the palate, a classy and refined Premier Cru with a whiff of pepper and smoke at the finish Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru, La Combe d Orveau La Combe d Orveau sits above Clos Vougeot and next to Echézeaux and Les Petits Musigny. Clavelier owns the largest proportion of the Premier Cru, with 0.81 hectares. Floral flavours abound, with a beautiful nose of fresh rose petals. Excellent energy on the palate, such transparency and charged with minerals Corton Grand Cru, Le Rognet 0.34 hectare plot facing east on the mid slope. Two thirds of the vineyard is 70 years old, with 35 year old vines for the remaining third. Firmly structured and classically styled, this is mouth-coating in both tannins and extract. Very savoury and muscular, a particularly classic and characterful Corton. Domaine des Lambrays Boris Champy, now in charge of the domaine following the retirement of Thierry Brouin after 35 years, was on fine form for our visit in November. Morey-Saint-Denis in general, and the domaine in particular, were spared the worst of the frosts in 2016, and so 2017 is a similar crop in terms of yield. Boris described 2017 as a new classic, the product of a relatively early harvest, and with good tannins and balanced acidity. This historic domaine is in very safe hands and is firmly focused on the future Btls Btls Btls Btls Morey-Saint-Denis The fruit comes from just above Clos des Lambrays and the wine is raised in one third new oak barrels. Dark and spicy fruits, with a lovely sour cherry note adding freshness. This terroir is on the hard Comblanchien rock, and the wine has a mineral quality and fine structure that belies its villages appellation Btls *Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Philippe Drouhin s grandparents astutely invested in Grand Cru land whenever the best parcels became available, creating holdings that would be impossible to achieve in the modern era. s a result, Drouhin-Laroze has vineyards in some of the best sites in the Côte de Nuits and 40% of their holdings are Grand Cru. The new generation at the domaine, Caroline and Nicolas, have continued to build upon and refine the great work of their parents and grandparents. The 2016s were their most critically acclaimed set of wines to date, whisper it, these 2017s may be even better Fixin, Laroze de Drouhin Laroze de Drouhin is the negociant project of the domaine, intended to complement their existing holdings with contracts for top locations where they don t own land. The family has effective control of the vineyards and picking dates, and ferment, age, and bottle the wine themselves. Fixin lies just north of Gevrey-Chambertin, and this example is a blend of two plots. Bursting with juicy Pinot fruits, but built around a muscular frame of tannins and bright acidity. Pretty classy, and likely to be good value Gevrey-Chambertin blend of parcels from across Gevrey, with 30% new oak barrels. Very fragrant and juicy, with high-toned fruit. Medium bodied and rather suave, with fine tannins and a very finessed finish at this level. super villages Gevrey from a domaine that is clearly going places Morey-Saint-Denis, En Très Girard Produced from a 0.18 hectare parcel of Morey-Saint-Denis located at the top part of the En Très Girard lieu-dit, planted in % whole bunch. Spicier and more densely fruited than the Gevrey, with an exotic note of sweet cooking spices. Supple and smooth on the palate, this is another very fine villages wine from the domaine Bonnes Mares, Grand Cru Drouhin-Laroze own a 1.5 hectare parcel of Bonnes Mares, which is solely on the Chambolle-Musigny side of the Grand Cru. Blueberries and plums vie for attention, with earthy notes and some liquorice adding complexity. More reserved on the palate at this early stage, you feel there is power in reserve and this just needs time to knit together Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Grand Cru Originally belonging to the monks of the Bèze abbey, vines have been planted here since as early as 630 D. Drouhin-Laroze own a 1.5 hectare parcel, planted in Caroline and Nicolas 2016 was always going to be a tough act to follow, but the 2017 is a suitably stately and aristocratic wine from this hallowed plot. Densely stacked, this is much more vertical than expansive at the moment, with a somewhat strict structure. Profoundly mineral, and with a wonderful purity and profundity of terroir Btls Btls Btls Btls Btls Burgundy En Primeur 2017 Burgundy En Primeur 39

Chablis

Chablis Domaine William Fèvre The Fèvre estate totals 51 hectares, and with 16 hectares of Premier Cru and 15 hectares of Grand Cru, they are the largest owner of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Tasting their range En Primeur is always a reference point for the region, these are wonderful expressions of their terroirs, classically-styled and precise. The only negative aspect is the yields, many of their vineyards were badly affected by frost Chablis Premier Cru, Les Lys We are pleased to again have exclusivity in the UK on Les Lys, a left bank Premier Cru that could technically be bottled as part of Vaillons. The domaine chooses to bottle it separately because its north-facing aspect gives it a unique freshness and tension. Pungently mineral, with strong notes of the sea. Citrus fruits and a bracing acidity drive the palate, this is a beautifully refined and sleek expression Btls Chablis Premier Cru, Montmains Fevre s Montmains comes from three parcels on the Left Bank: Butteaux, Les Fôrets, and Montmains. The plots face south east, and this is a more powerful expression of Premier Cru Chablis, with an excellent concentration of white and yellow fruits. It s important to pick early here to manage the maturity, and this has a lovely balance of weight and tension Btls Zivile Kasparaviciute 2017 Chablis Premier Cru, Montée de Tonnerre Montée de Tonnerre is located directly to the right of Grand Cru Les Clos, and Fèvre s 2.24 hectares are a mixture of three different parcels, each with a different aspect. The cool Kimmeridgian clay soil doesn t retain heat, which helps keep freshness, and the vines are old. Reassuringly fresh, with pure and vibrant notes of citrus fruits, subtle spices, and oyster shells Btls Chablis Grand Cru, Bougros Bourgros is Fèvre s largest Grand Cru holding, with 6 hectares in total. Four hectares are used for this cuvée, with the remaining 2 bottled separately as Côte Bougros. Typically the most expressive of the Grand Crus in youth, this is open and stylish, with pear and floral flavours. Excellent tension on the palate, which is deftly balanced and bracingly saline on the finish Btls Chablis Grand Cru, Bougros Côte Bouguerots Côte Bouguerots is in the steepest, rockiest part of Bourgros, Fèvre have 2 hectares in two plots and they have produced this cuvée separately since More reserved on the nose than the Bougros, this is more about minerals than overt fruit. step up in acidity, this is particularly lip-smacking in its freshness and expression of the terroir Btls Great Chablis has an extraordinary blend of power masked by a nervy minerality and is a truly unique style. Nowhere else manages to make Chardonnay of such austerity, yet also generosity and age worthiness. No serious cellar is complete without it Chablis Grand Cru, Les Clos The most famous of all the Grand Crus, Fèvre have 4.11 hectares divided across 8 plots on the cooler upper slopes. The vines are old, with 50% planted in the 1940s. s always, this is quietly brooding at such an early stage, with all its power tightly coiled on the palate. Subtle citrus fruits and spices emerge with time in the glass, but this is a stony and mineral Grand Cru that needs time Btls Burgundy En Primeur 43

Chablis Chablis Domaine Billaud-Simon Despite the challenges posed by pril frosts, particularly on the lower slopes, Billaud-Simon have produced a terrific range of 2017s in their classic, mineral style. Winemaker Olivier Bailly believes that the wines are extremely promising, purer in style than the 2016s, and less austere than the 2014s, but sharing many of the same classic characters Chablis, Tête d Or This cuvée is a blend of two parcels in 2017, located on the southern slopes at the foot of Montée de Tonnerre. return to the more classic style of Tête d Or, steely and mineral. 20% barrel fermentation adds a subtle richness, this is a lovely wine at its level Chablis Premier Cru, Mont de Milieu blend of 4 parcels of 35+ year old vines, across all of the different aspects and altitudes of the Cru. Generally more opulent in style, the 2017 balances the expressive stone fruit characteristics with a bracing acidity and saline profile Chablis Premier Cru, Montée de Tonnerre Billaud-Simon have two parcels at the top of Montée de Tonnerre, Côte de Bréchain and Pied d loup, and one at the bottom in Chapelot. They own 2.15 hectares in total. The higher acidity here is immediately apparent, giving focus and precision to the wine. Very persistent and fresh, with the merest hint of oak adding structure on the finish. Lots of potential Chablis Grand Cru, Les Preuses 0.41 hectare parcel, planted in 1952, which represents the oldest vineyard holdings of the domaine. 3 barrels produced in This is Olivier s favourite Grand Cru, and it s easy to see why, it s a textbook example of the minerality, balance, and overall harmony that the top Grand Crus can produce. Very saline and vibrant, with a silky texture Chablis Grand Cru, Vaudésir Billaud-Simon have three parcels, totalling 0.49 hectares, and two of those are from the later ripening north west sector of the Grand Cru. Fresh, and intensely lemony aromas on the nose, overlaid with maritime and granitic notes. Vaudésir typically is austere in youth, but blossoms into a wine of great charm with a little time in the cellar Btls Btls Btls Btls Btls Domaine Samuel Billaud Having made wine at Billaud-Simon for 20 vintages, Samuel Billaud set out to follow his own path following the sale of the family domaine to Faiveley. Samuel described 2017 as unique, with the wines having a lovely character and tension. He feels that the low yields of the year have heightened minerality, whilst retaining freshness. These are perhaps Samuel s best wines to date Chablis Premier Cru, Les Fourneaux Les Forneaux translates as oven and this small Right Bank Premier Cru is ideally situated on steep, south facing slopes, with vines planted in % tank fermented. The nose is spicy, with lemon peel and slate aromas, and superb density. The balance between the sunny exposure of the site, and the tingling salinity and tension on the finish is particularly impressive here Chablis Premier Cru, Séchet Vieilles Vignes 0.60 hectare parcel of 70 year old vines that used to belong to Samuel s greatgrandmother. 100% tank fermented. Samuel describes Séchet as the Montée de Tonnerre of the Left Bank, which is considerable praise! So strict and focused, with remarkable precision and expression of the soil and the vintage. This really has a Grand Cru quality, but from the left bank Chablis Grand Cru, Bougros Bougros is at the North West extremity of the Grand Crus, has the steepest slopes, and has a remarkable South facing exposition. lready expressive and open, but with the texture and minerality on the palate that is deceptively complex. With subtle nutty, flinty notes on the finish, this is a very fine Grand Cru that balances concentration with a saline expression of terroir. Domaine Louis Moreau The Moreau family have been making wine in Chablis since 1814, Louis founded the domaine in He owns parcels in four of Chablis seven Grand Crus, including the Hospices monopole within Les Clos. Louis looks for clarity and expression of terroir from each site, and the 2017s were vinified 100% in steel tank to preserve the freshness and purity of the vintage Btls Btls Btls Chablis Premier Cru, Vaillons From 50 year old, south-facing vines on kimmeridgian soil. blend of three plots: Roncières, Séchet, and Chatains. Fleshy stone fruits are attractively balanced by fresh citrus notes. The balance of stony minerality and peachy fruits is very appealing Chablis Grand Cru, Les Clos Produced from a 3 hectare plot planted in 1958 and Made 100% in tank since the 2013 vintage, allowing the purity and precision of this great Grand Cru to shine. Powerfully mineral, quite tight at this young stage, but with excellent depth and purity. very classy Les Clos, finishing with impressive persistence Btls Btls Chablis Grand Cru, Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos The Clos des Hospices is owned exclusively by the Moreau family, located towards the bottom of Les Clos. It was acquired by Louis great-great-grandfather from the Hôpital de Chablis in There is less chalk and more clay in this part of Les Clos, and the wine is correspondingly fuller and richer in style. very tender and beautiful expression of the cru, with nutty, brioche notes and sweet spices. The finish is pleasingly dry and saline Btls Burgundy En Primeur 2017 Burgundy En Primeur 45
