Miles* Survey In the summer f 1981, the Viticulture Survey mmittee f the ine Research Advisry Bard wrte a letter t the Extensin Service asking fr help in making a survey t determine the acreages, by variety, f wineggapps in Oregn. A survey frm was develped and mailing lists f grape grwers were acquired. In. Nvember, 1981 the survey frm was mailed t thse n the mailing lists. In January, 1982, a fllw-up request was sent t thse that had nt respnded. In additin, persnal cntacts were made t gather acreage data frm nn-respndents. hile we knw that nt all grape grwers respnded t the survey, it is thught that data in this reprt includes 8 percent r mre f Oregn's winegrape. Number f Respndents There were 8 grape grwers reprting bearing vineyards and 91 reprting nnbearing vineyards. Mst f thse with bearing reprted sme nnbearing but many with nnbearing appeared t be just getting int the business. Vineyard peratins in Oregn are quite small. Of the 8 reprting bearing acreages nly 3 peratins had 3 r mre.. Fiftyseven r 71 percent f the 8 peratins had 1 r less. Of the 91 Operatins reprting nnbearing, almst all (87) had 15 r less. In mst cases, hwever, these grapegrwers als have bearing vineyards. Page 2

Pint Nir was the primary variety grwn with The three main varieties were Pint Nir, hite Riesling, and hardnnay with a cmbined acreage f 57 r almst 8 percent f the ttal. There were 519 nnbearing vineyard reprted. The same three varieties (as reprted abve) were dminant. Over 7 percent f the nnbearing were in these three varieties: Pint Nir, hite Riesling, and hardnnay. Yamhill unty grwers reprted mre grape, bth bearing and nnbearing, than any ther cunty. ashingtn unty was secnd; in fact, between the tw cunties, they had 455 r 63 percent f the bearing acreage and abut half f the nnbearing. Variety VI inegrape Yields & Prices.1981 Average Yield Prices Reprted in $/tn eighted Average - High Lw Pint Nir hite Riesling hardnnay Gewurtztraminer abernet Sauvignn Prices & Yields hile the acreages by variety were quite cmplete n the survey frms, the yield and price data was nt cmplete. e did, hwever, tabulate yield and price infrmatin frm the frms that prvided this data. The abve table summarizes this infrmatin. In reviewing this, remember the data was nt cmplete and n standards were used as t quality. Sugar cntent f curse affects price, and bunch rt and/r materials ther than grapes (M.O.G.) affect bth price and yield. The yields appear t be quite lw. Things affecting this might be the particular year, many f the vineyards may be yung and nt in full prductin, yield may in fact be lw and this is a prblem, r a cmbinatin f the things mentined. Page 6
