Sheldon s Wine Cellars Tel: New Street, Shipston on Stour, Warks CV36 4EN Fax: peter@sheldonswines.com 2015 BURGUNDY EN-PRIMEUR Opulent wonderfully balanced Whites & Extraordinary Reds The growing season in Burgundy got off to an early start with a warmer than average March and a downright balmy April. May was also warm and the flowering on the Côte de Beaune took place quickly during the last couple days of the month and a hot first week of June. Potential yields were generally very good by recent Burgundy standards, but production in many vineyards was reduced, sometimes sharply, owing to the aftereffects of the violent late-june hailstorm in Some growers reported an element of millerandage (grape bunches contain berries that differ greatly in size and maturity), which could reduce ultimate crop levels and accentuate the range of fruit ripeness, and one or two even mentioned coulure (shatter), but those were exceptions to a mostly glorious flowering. Substantial rainfall during a cooler week in mid-june just after the flowering finished (numerous growers reported as many as 50 millimetres of precipitation) provided the soil with crucial water reserves that would help the vines get through the very hot, dry July weather without undue hydric stress. Temperatures turned blistering hot at the end of June and through the first week of July. There was another, shorter heat spike in the middle of July and temperatures for the month were significantly higher than normal. Rainfall was minimal to non-existent: there was virtually no precipitation between June 15 and July 22 and the most exposed vines on the driest soils began to show signs of severe thirst though to a far lesser extent than vineyards in the Mâconnais, which did not benefit from the rainfall in mid-june. August brought more changeable weather, far more typical for Burgundy than July had been. There were several days with light precipitation during the second and fourth weeks of the month, interspersed with a couple short heat spikes. It then turned hot again during the last five days of the month, when many domaines were already starting to harvest. What vintage will the 2015s resemble? No one s suggesting that it s another 2003: August was temperate in The fruit is more concentrated than in 2009 thanks to a smaller harvest, though analytically the figures are similar; berry and juice tastings suggest more ripeness than in 2010 and 2012, though not necessarily less freshness. The 2005 vintage looks like an obvious point of comparison, but many in Burgundy are surprised (and pained) by how hard the 2005s are proving in the bottle, and speaking to Caroline Parent-Gros of AF Gros, she felt that they might be able to improve on the structural aspect of the wines and the quality of the tannins in 2015 by comparison with Burgundians are by nature a modest lot, and resist the extravagant early claims to which the Bordelais are prone, but I think we can safely say 2015 will be regarded at one of the finest vintages of the past twenty years (and perhaps longer!) We are once again listing all of our wines this year with in-bond prices (excluding duty, VAT and UK delivery). Further details are included at the end of the offer. 3 OUR STAR PICKS FROM OUR RECENT VISIT L Eveil des Sens Francis Lechauve Beaune Les Paules Vieille Vignes As last year one of the prettiest noses we tasted with violets and dense black fruits virtually leaping out of the glass. This is pure, plush and with an excellent mouth filling richness. Good weighty tannins suggest a very good future ahead. Drink Domaine Marcel Couturier Macon-Loche Les Longues Terres Fresh, fragrant nose with stone fruits and a hint of white flowers. The palate combines minerality and creaminess in perfect harmony very good acidity and long, clean finish. This is, in theory, a Mâconnais- Villages, but it punches well above its weight. Drink from now Domaine Andre Moingeon Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne Our first visit to Andre Moingeon and we were super impressed. La Garenne is a vineyard that normally produces the ultimate elegant style of Puligny and indeed this character does come through on the finish, but before like most of the 2015 s there is a wonderfully generous nose and a palate of real substance. The texture is what really gives this away as being a cut above the norm and the minerality that shows on the finish is simply the icing on the cake. Drink from Domaine Remi Jeanniard Morey St Denis 1er Cru Ruchots From the vineyard Les Ruchots, these vines were planted in 1969 on about a quarter of a hectare of flat land. Bordered by Clos de Tart and Bonnes Mares this is perhaps the value pick of the whole trip. Aged in oak barrels (50% new) for twelve months. Fresh and Vibrant yet packed full of meaty fruit. Wonderful structure and tannins the balance is sublime. Drink from Domaine A-F Gros Beaune Blanc 1er Cru Montrevenots WHITE WINE OF THE TRIP! Absolutely stunning! Montrevenots is located high on the slope above the famous Beaune Clos des Mouches vineyard on the Pommard border. The soil is very stony and this has helped to create a wine with minerality but is also deep, rich and concentrated. Distinct floral notes are also present on the palate. Drink from Domaine Gilles Remoriquet Nuits Saint George 1er cru Les Damodes There s quite a concentrated core of dark fruit red fruits on the nose but nicely augmented with a fainter floral aspect. Round, with very fine tannin. Quite silky with a strong line of intensity through the core. Great balance and finesse and a wine that will improve leaps and bounds for a few years in the cellar. Excellent. Drink from

L EVEIL DES SENS The fourth appearance of Francis Lechauve on our list. Francis grew up in the small wine-making town of Meloisey and started working in the vineyards, helping out his neighbour, at the age of 12. Francis then spent 17 years at Douhairet Porcheret in Monthelie before starting his own domaine. Francis is very much about quality and tradition. His yields are far lower than allowed in the appellation and all of his vineyards are harvested by hand (not always common practice for vines in the Hautes Cotes appellation). Francis and Denis Carré are leading the way in this region and have helped to put the Hautes-Côtes on the map HAUTES-COTES DE BEAUNE BLANC This white is a fantastic combination of rich pure fruit with crisp acidity. Francis Lechauve has certainly put Meloisey on the map and it is now regarded by many as one of the finest sites in the Hautes Côte. Most producers in the Hautes-Côte (including Denis Carre) make their entry level wines to drink young. Somehow with Francis s wines you always get the feeling a little patience will be rewarded and this is certainly the case with this wine. Drink from MONTHELIE BLANC This drinks like a great Meursault and this emphasizes my opinion that Francis is the King of Monthelie. The nose is big and creamy yet is balanced with clean minerality and floral notes. Maybe slightly more akin to the minerality of the 2014 vintage at this stage, the signs are there that this will fatten out a little over the coming years. Drink from SAINT ROMAIN BLANC Our first tasting of Lechauve s Saint Romain and what a treat. Clean and crisper with more minerality than the HCDB and the Monthelie. Very fine with a great freshness. This was a lovely surprise and once more another example of what Francis can produce from an underrated appellation. Excellent! I would drink as a fairly young wine with Seabass but will mellow and fill out a touch if kept a few years. Drink from now MEURSAULT This is rich and expressive on the nose with notes of honeysuckle, citrus and stone fruits. Creamy, smooth complexity on the front end of the palate with melted butter, a good dollop of minerality and beautiful uplifting acidity balance that adds another dimension. Drink from HAUTES-COTES DE BEAUNE ROUGE As mentioned on the Hautes-Cote Blanc Francis makes his wines for the future and this is another example. The deep very open fruity nose evokes cherry and raspberry; the palate offers a hint of cassis and plenty of structure. The fruit has wonderful purity. This is more forward than the 2013 & 2014 but will still reward patience. Drink from late BEAUNE LES PAULES VIELLES VIGNES As last year one of the prettiest noses we tasted with violets and dense black fruits virtually leaping out of the glass. This is pure, plush and with an excellent mouth filling richness. Good weighty tannins suggest a very good future ahead. Drink POMMARD VIELLES VIGNES This wine is much deeper and richer than Carre s and will need time to be seen at its best. Packed full of dark fruits, spicier, sinewy fruit on the nose, mineral and stones. Gorgeous grip and bite, deep black fruit, plum, cherries, complexing wood spice, mineral drive, rich tannins, great acid and the toasty oak on the finish. Drink

DOMAINE DENIS CARRE A Burgundy native, Denis Carré helped local winegrowers as a child. In 1975, he and his wife, Bernadette, built a winery they could call their own from scratch using a difficult to obtain bank loan. Located in Meloisey, a small village in Hautes Côtes de Beaune, the winery facility and family holdings have expanded over the years. Today, Denis Carré owns 12.5 hectares (31 acres) of vineyard land in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune, Meursault, Pommard and ten other appellations. Denis and Bernadette s two children, Gaetane and Martial, who were raised on the property, help run the company. Gaetane (pictured) studied business and now heads operations and the financial end of the Domaine. Martial is the winemaker and usually can be found pruning, working the vines or in the cellar. per case of 12 bottles excluding duty & vat WHITES 2015 HAUTES-COTES DE BEAUNE BLANC tbc As mentioned on the previous page Domaine Denis Carré make their Hautes-Côte in a completely different style to that of Francis Lechauve. This has a wonderfully fresh zippy citrus nose, pure stone fruits and white flowers on the palate and a lovely clean fresh finish. Drink from AUXEY DURESSES LES VIREUX tbc This is full and rich and in keeping with being on the Meursault side of the commune. The oak is still quite prominent but this will integrate nicely with a year or two of ageing. Slightly deeper richer mouthfeel than the 2014 which is again in keeping with the character of the vintage. Drink from MEURSAULT LES TILLETS tbc Broad and rich yet with great balance. Rich nose of honey and hazelnuts with subtle vanilla notes, joined on the palate by fresh orchard fruits, the creamy texture adds weight whilst the acidity is very well balanced. As in 2014 if you can resist its charms for a few years you will be richly rewarded. Drink from REDS 2015 HAUTES-COTES BE BEAUNE LA PERRIERE tbc Aged 14 months in French Oak. A vibrant bouquet evokes notes of raspberry and cherry. The palate is packed full of crunchy red fruits and has a little structure. It has elegant silky already well integrated tannins. Excellent. Drink SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE VIEILLES VIGNES tbc A pretty pure fruit nose. Packed full of ripe fruits on the palate, all together more serious and brooding and with tannins more pronounced than in Drink from POMMARD tbc Lovely deep purple, silky dark red fruits with some black notes. Generous, ripe, and yet more black fruit on the palate. Really lovely wine with Pommard weight but still with a real sense of elegance. A slightly subtler sensitive example than most Pommard we tasted in Drink

DOMAINE MARCEL COUTURIER - FUISSÉ, MÂCONNAIS Marcel has carried out massive improvements in his cellars and his set-up is now amongst the most modern we visited on our recent trip. Each trip there is something new be it a cellar or bottling line. We were the first merchant to import these wines into the UK and cannot recommend them highly enough. Marcel has got some of the finest vineyard sites in the Mâconnais and a vast proportion of his vines are over 60 years old. I can honestly say that in 2015 Marcel has produced a masterclass in winemaking, his two Saint Veran cuvees were both excellent and his price to value ratio is one of the best of all the Domaines we visited. p e 2015 MÂCON-LOCHÉ LES LONGUES TERRES Fresh, fragrant nose with stone fruits and a hint of white flowers. The palate combines minerality and creaminess in perfect harmony very good acidity and long, clean finish. This is, in theory, a Mâconnais-Villages, but it punches well above its weight. Drink from now ST VERAN LA COUR DES BOIS In the 2014 vintage I felt the cuvee, Le Vallon was the clear pick between Couturiers two St Veran cuvees but this year it was a much closer battle! This has a fuller, riper nose than the Vallon. A good mouthfeel with delicious fruit, good acidity and a nice long finish. Drink from now ST VERAN LE VALLON A wonderful nose, loaded with creamy lemon and minerals, followed by a rich, broad palate packed with flavour and balancing freshness. Drink from now

DOMAINE ANDRE MOINGEON, SAINT AUBIN NEW THIS YEAR André Moingeon created this Domaine in the 50s although certain parcels of vines have been in the family for over 150 years. André was joined by his son Michel (pictured) in 1978 and now by his grandson Florent and together they have grown the domaine to encompass 10 hectares of vines around St. Aubin. The style is open and modern and easy to drink although the Puligny retains its taut minerality perfectly. They only bottle 50% of the harvest each year and Michel s prices are amongst the lowest in St. Aubin...and indeed, Puligny! 2015 SAINT-AUBIN 1ER CRU SUR GAMAY This has more than a hint of the Puligny about it. A pretty, ripe and fresh nose offers up mostly floral and white-fleshed fruit scents though there is a hint of peach present as well. There is fine density and a lovely mouth feel to the round yet vibrant middle weight flavours that exude a very fine bead of minerality that adds a touch of lift to the nicely balanced finale. Drink from late SAINT-AUBIN 1ER CRU CHATENIERE This steep limestone vineyard enjoys extra warmth from its surrounding walls. This is a wine which typically ages well. The 2015 has a lovely citrus and blossom nose, very precise and enticing. The palate delivers an extra volume of fruit here, and has higher acidity levels than the Sur Gamay Drink from PULIGNY MONTRACHET A wonderful clean fresh nose. The palate has a lovely mineral character with good depth and nicely balanced acidity. Not one for the long term this will be great over the next few years. Drink from CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET Aromas of acacia, and honeysuckle blend with citrus and a hint of hazelnut. This wine boasts a profound minerality and with a few years ageing the notes of honey and ripe pear will become more prominent. On the palate, fleshiness is matched by mellowness. Excellent. This will definitely benefit from a few years ageing. Drink from PULIGNY MONTRACHET 1 ER CRU LA GARENNE La Garenne is a vineyard that normally produces the ultimate elegant style of Puligny and indeed this character does come through on the finish, but before like most of the 2015 s there is a wonderfully generous nose and a palate of real substance. The texture is what really gives this away as being a cut above the norm and the minerality that shows on the finish is simply the icing on the cake. Drink from

DOMAINE SYLVAIN DUSSORT WHITE Domaine Sylvain Dussort is a small family domaine based in Meursault. Sylvain took over 20 years ago and started farming the estates 30 acres with minimal intervention in order to let the vines express the true character of each vineyard site. Each wine is treated differently depending on the vintage and the terroir. In the cellar only native yeasts are used for the vinification. Elevage takes place with extended lees contact but with no batonnage (the process of stirring the fine lees remaining in the barrel of unfinished wine after the initial settling) The objective in doing so is to impart richness without compromising the particularities and true character of each wine. The production at Dussort is miniscule, even by Burgundian standards BOURGOGNE ALIGOTE A blast from the past! Aligote has a reputation for being the wine that is searched out when Kir is served. This Bourgogne Aligoté is delicious. It is pale gold in colour and has a fruity bouquet with notes of apple and lemon and just a hint of white flowers. In the mouth, this vibrant wine tickles the taste buds. With prices climbing again this year this looks remarkable value and if the label said Bourgogne Blanc instead of Aligote we would be selling lots! Drink from now BOURGOGNE BLANC CUVEE DES ORMES Vinified from 50 year old vines right below the two Meursault lieu-dits of En l Ormeau and Les Pellans. Lovely rich fruit nose with just a hint of spice. The palate is full of stone fruits with a creamy undercurrent. Very good acidity and long finish. Excellent. Drink from late MEURSAULT A very focused Meursault. There is plenty of texture here, but it s not the feathery soft texture of overly rich Meursault: it is acid driven, crunchy and super fresh. Definitely a wine that can age although it s delicious right now. Drink from MEURSAULT Vielles Vignes Elegant and still with a mineral edge but richer and more powerful that the regular village Meursault listed above. This is a wine that will benefit hugely from a few years ageing. Drink from MEURSAULT LIMOZIN Limozin is a beautiful Meursault, surrounded by Charmes and Genevrères (both premier crus). It is vinified in barrels (20% New Oak) and bottled after 18 to 20 months. The vinification is exactly the same as for the Cuvée des Ormes. Sylvain believes that there has been a tendency to pick too late in Meursault in recent years and end up with wines that are rich but lacking acidity. It is clear with this Limozin that this philosophy is working! This has a wonderful mineral spine and the richness is balanced beautifully by the acidity. Potentially outstanding. Drink from

DOMAINE BELLEVILLE Domaine Belleville was created in Rully at the beginning of the 20th century, in the heart of the wine-making Burgundy. With 28 hectares of vineyards spread out from North to South Burgundy, Domaine Belleville stands next to Château de Messey (Mâconnais) and Manoir Murisaltien (Côte d'or), all three belonging to the Dumont family. We were particularly impressed with Domaine Belleville s expression of Rully under young winemaker Charles Nebout. WHITES 2015 RULLY LA PERCHE Open and spicy with aromas of white flowers and citrus fruits. Touch of almonds and minerality lead through on to the palate. On lemon and exotic fruits notes. Nice balance and very long finish. Harmonious and elegant. Drink from now RULLY 1ER CRU CHAPITRE Pleasant aromas of butter and honey. Clean attack with a nice balance. Round and straightforward. Toasted and gingerbread flavours on the finish Drink from late RULLY1ER CRU LA PUCELLE Expressive bouquet of butter and fruits such as citrus fruits and white flesh fruits. Nice structure and very well balanced with a surprising mellowness. Flavours of toasted bread and dry apricot on the finish. Drink from REDS 2015 MERCUREY CHAMP LADOY Lovely open nose of fresh blackberry and raspberry with just a touch of spices. Toasty notes are evident but not dominating. Clean attack on the palate, fresh with a lot of finesse, round and well-balanced with soft tannins. Nice and long finish. Drink from RULLY 1ER CRU CHAPITRE Elegant and open aromas of cherry with a touch of raspberry, cherries and vanilla. Finesse and elegance would best describe this wine. The finish is long lasting and very fruity. Drink from

CHATEAU DE MESSEY Part of the Belleville stable. In 1986, Marc DUMONT bought a vineyard in Cruzille, in Mâconnais, that originally belonged to the monks of the illustrious Abbey of Cluny. A few years later, he met the Demoiselles Jourdan sisters then the owners of Château de Messey, a domain of 89 hectares (220 acres), of which 17 hectares (42 acres) had produced AOC wines until Marc Dumont purchased this domain to carry on the tradition of many generations in the art of fine wine making. The beautiful XVIth century vaulted cellars assure the best conditions for making high quality wine MACON CRUZILLE CLOS DE AVOUERIES % fermented in oak. Subtle nose of floral and fruity aromas. The palate encompasses white peach and mineral combined with notes of honeysuckle and almond with just a hint of vanilla. Drink now MACON CRUZILLE CLOS DE AVOUERIES TETE DE CUVEE More complex and expressive than the above wine. Lovely full ripe palate nicely balanced by a citrus zing at the back end of the palate. Drink from DOMAINE FOURNILLON Eric, Dominique and Pascal have taken over the running of Domaine Fournillon from their parents, Gérard and Muguette. In 1980 the estate covered just 1.5 hectares but now extends to some 23 hectares. Although best known for their Chablis, Domaine Fournillon also have a wonderful old vineyard of 100 year old ungrafted Chardonnay. Known as Cuvée de l'empereur or the Vine of the Emperor the vineyard was planted on very sandy soil back in the mid-19 th century and was not affected by the Phylloxera which virtually wiped out the entire French wine production in the mid to late 1800 s BOURGOGNE CHARDONNAY From 25 yr old vines. This is lovely and clean and fresh with beautifully pure fruit a just a hint of body. Drink now Drink from CHABLIS Still very much on the softer side, this is slightly crisper than the Clean, fresh fruit and well balanced acidity. Drink from now

DOMAINE DES MALANDES We have been buying from Domaine des Malandes for many years. Lynn owns 15 hectares of vines on gentle slopes, rich in Kimmeridgean clay at altitudes of between 150 and 250 metres. Vines are up to 45 years old. She is fortunate to own plots in some of the finest locations within the Premier cru and Grand cru vineyards. Since 2006 she has worked with winemaker Guenole Bretendeau and his non-interventionist style has certainly suited the Domaine. The 2015 vintage is an excellent one for the Chablis region and certainly for Domaine des Malandes. The Domaine continues to go from strength to strength and recent investment in the winery is bearing fruit! PETIT CHABLIS TBC Unfortunately, The 2015 vintage of Petit Chablis is already sold out! We will be offering the 2016 in the spring alongside a great value NEW Bourgogne Blanc bottled under the Les Malandes label CHABLIS (ALSO AVAILBLE IN MAGNUM) The vines in the village Chablis are more than 35 years old. This is very typically Chablis with grapefruit aromas and stone fruits and a wonderful minerality on the palate. Drink from now CHABLIS 1ER CRU COTE DE LECHET (ALSO AVAILBLE IN MAGNUM) The hallmark citrus aromas are present in force on the oyster shell, white flower, pear and green apple-scented nose. Like the straight Chablis this possesses outstanding intensity as the middle weight flavours seem to be built on a firm base of minerality, all wrapped in a citrusy, delicious and markedly dry finale. Drink from CHABLIS 1ER CRU VAU DE VEY The 1er cru of Vau de Vey is located on a very steep slope facing East with chalk and clay soils. The subsoil of this 1er cru brings a unique character to the wine. Classic Premier Cru Chablis with floral notes lifting above a rich minerality on the palate. There is some crisp apple fruit here too that combines well to bring superb balance. Classic Vau de Vey. Drink from CHABLIS 1ER CRU MONTMAINS (ALSO AVAILBLE IN MAGNUM) % of the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with the remaining 20% being fermented in 1-5 yr old Oak barrels. However, the ageing takes places entirely in stainless steel tank. The Montmains shows a crunchy green apple character at present with no shortage of mineral complexity. Drink from CHABLIS 1ER CRU FOURCHAUME (ALSO AVAILBLE IN MAGNUM) From 60 yr old vines. This is fermented and aged exactly the same as the Montmains above. The main difference when compared to the Montmains is the greater ripeness of fruit and slightly rounder fuller finish. This will benefit from a bit of time. Drink from CHABLIS GRAND CRU VAUDESIRS (ALSO AVAILBLE IN MAGNUM) From 40 yr old vines. 50% is fermented in stainless steel and 50% in oak barrel. After racking the wine is aged in stainless steel for 14 months. Very good complex fruit and mineral character with a touch of spice on the finish. Much like the 2014 vintage this will benefit from a minimum of 3/4 yrs and will be excellent. Drink from

DOMAINE GILLES REMORIQUET The Remoriquets moved from Citeaux to Nuits, sometime in the 17th century but to tend sheep rather than vines. The roots of the domaine start with Gilles great-grandparents working the vines and buying the Nuits Les Allots that the domaine still farms. The domaine was continued by Gilles grandparents. Father Henri further expanded the number of plots owned by the Domaine today it stands at a little over 10 hectares. This was undoubtedly the biggest surprise of the trip with the wines across the board being several notches up from the previous vintage HAUTES-COTES-DE NUITS ROUGE Quite perfumed pretty fruit nose. Chewy deep rich fruit, good body and a little dollop of tannin. This wine certainly over delivers and I think with another year or two will be very fine indeed. Drink from NUITS SAINT GEORGES Again a very pretty nose with a distinct floral element. Good silky mouthfeel with great purity and elegance. Very, very good. Drink from NUITS SAINT GEORGES LES ALLOTS Again a lovely pretty nose but more depth and weight than the village Nuits. All together more meaty on the palate but still with the trademark silky mouthfeel. Drink from NUITS SAINT GEORGES 1ER CRU LES DAMODES There s quite a concentrated core of dark fruit red fruits on the nose but nicely augmented with a fainter floral aspect. Round, with very fine tannins. Quite silky with a strong line of intensity through the core. Great balance and finesse and a wine that will improve leaps and bounds after a few years in the cellar. Excellent. Drink from NUITS SAINT GEORGES 1ER CRU BOUSSELOTS Elegance in a glass. Black fruits and feminine floral notes on the nose. Wonderfully pure elegant fruit and super long powerful finish. It makes you wonder quite why Nuits Saint Georges isn t as fashionable as it was twenty years ago? Drink from NUITS SAINT GEORGES 1ER CRU LES SAINT GEORGES Much deeper complex nose. The palate has a savoury quality balanced with ripe fruits and more than a hint of mineral. The tannins are silky and starting to integrate. With a few years ageing this will be top class. Drink from VOSNE ROMANEE 1ER CRU AU DESSOUS DES MALCONSORTS These are relatively young vines, but Gilles says they never crop very high, typically hl/ha, partly because they always produce small berries. Bordering the Grand Cru, La Tache vineyard, Malconsorts is considered by many to be Grand Cru in all but name. The nose is wide, complex and interesting with classic Vosne flavours a spicy complexity, its fresh flavour being its final calling-card. This is rather lovely. Drink from

DOMAINE FOUGERAY DE BEAUCLAIR Most famous for their Bonnes-Mares and their Clos Marion, the family business of Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair was founded about 1979 when Jean-Louis Fougeray, the father of the current owners, a man who by day worked in administration and by night tending his vines, made his very first cuvée. It was from a quarter hectare of Marsannay vines in the family since 1972 this was the start for Domaine Fougeray. Day to day responsibility for the domaine now rests with Jean-Louis daughter Laurence and her husband Patrice Olliver (pictured). They also own a wine-making operation in the Languedoc (Mas Val Grieux) which, starting in 1999 they created themselves, rather than buying an existing operation WHITE 2015 BOURGOGNE BLANC L ORMICHAL The vineyards for this cuvee are located in Fixin. The wine is aged for 8 months in 4/5-year-old oak barrels. The nose is luscious and shows tropical fruits. The palate is full and round with a good length and is worthy of a village appellation. Drink from now SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE BLANC LES GOLARDS From 35 yr old vines 30% of the wine spends 8 months in new oak barrels. A clean fresh nose with a very evident mineral character. The palate is soft and shows pineapple and hazelnut with yet more mineral on the back end of the palate. Lovely balanced acidity. Drink FIXIN BLANC CLOS MARION From the monopole Clos Marion which has just 0.3 hectares planted to Chardonnay. This wine is fermented and aged in barrel over 12 months (30% of the cuvee in new oak barrels) The nose offers a good balance of citrus, white flowers and minerality. The palate is well structured and full yet with the mineral element still present. The vanilla/oak flavours are yet to fully integrate but given a few years ageing this will be a treat. Drink from REDS 2015 BOURGOGNE ROUGE L ORMICHAL From vineyards located in Fixin. The vines are 25 years old and spend 10 months in old oak barrels. The nose is full of raspberries and cherries with just a subtle undercurrent of spice. The palate is soft and fruity with fine tannins. Very good Bourgogne Rouge. Drink from now COTES DE NUITS VILLAGES From 35 yr old vines aged in 2 4 yr old barrels for 12 months. Lovely full ripe Côtes de Nuits with blackcurrants and ripe red fruits. The palate is fairly rustic with a hint of leather and in a few years, will be perfected matched with game birds. Drink from MARSANNAY ROUGE LES SAINT JACQUES From 30 yr old vines aged in old oak barrels for one year. A complex nose with rustic notes of leather, spice and blackberries. The palate is nicely balanced and the tannins are well-integrated. Drink from FIXIN ROUGE CLOS MARION Sumptuous blackcurrants dominate the nose and lead through into a complex and dense palate. Hints of ripe fruits and liquorice and a very long finish. This drinks like the complete package and can be drunk young but I would suggest holding for at least a few years. Drink from CHAMBOLLE MUISGNY LES VEROILLES From 20 yr old vines. This wine is aged in oak barrels (30% new) for 14 months. A round and robust wine yet retains the trademark Veroilles femininity. An elegant wine with plush fruit softness and a long finish. Drink from GEVREY CHAMBERTIN LES SEUVREES From 60 yr old vines aged in oak barrels (30% new) for 15 months. A wonderfully concentrated nose with hints of red fruits and violets. The palate is velvety smooth and the finish long and with no shortage of structure. Drink from BONNES MARES GRAND CRU From vines averaging 55 years of age this wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months. Medium-full colour. Rich, meaty nose with woody notes. Good ripe fruit and spice with plenty of weight yet no shortage of finesse. This is ripe and very well balanced. Very good indeed. Drink from

DOMAINE REMI JEANNIARD Remi has just over 7 hectares of vines in and around Morey-Saint- Denis. The vines are much older than average, with all of his Vieilles Vignes village bottlings being at least 50 years old, and the Morey St Denis over 60 years old. This gives a natural concentration to the wines which are both well structured and elegant. Remi is a firm believer that wines are made in the vineyard and this shows through in the pure, concentrated style of the wines and the cautious use of new oak. The 2015 vintage has re-inforced our opinion that Remi will become a big star BOURGOGNE ALIGOTE We tried several different Aligotes on our trip and this was our joint winner alongside Sylvain Dussort. A lovely welcoming nose, great pure fruit on the palate and lovely acid balance. Excellent and again if it had Bourgogne Blanc on the label would be 15 a bottle! Drink from now BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR From over 50 year old vines. From vineyards bordering Chambolle Musigny. Lovely perfumed nose. Wonderful pure fruit, very elegant, moderate structure, stunning Entry level Pinot every cellar should have a case or two! Drink now MOREY SAINT DENIS VIEILLES VIGNES From the vineyards Clos Solon Très Girard and Clos des Ormes, these vines were planted between 1951 and This was for the second year in a row one of the wines of the trip. The nose shows wonderfully perfumed plump red fruit aromas. Wonderful purity and focus with a real depth of character and well integrated silky tannins. Quite forward but will really benefit from a few years cellaring. Drink from GEVREY CHAMBERTIN VIEILLES VIGNES Over 70 year old vines. Again very pretty nose. More meaty than the 2014 and yet once again very silky mouthfeel with great purity of fruit. Great freshness maybe not as immediately rewarding as in the last vintage but given time will be a super wine. Drink from CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY VIEILLES VIGNES % new oak. Wonderfully aromatic nose. Real depth of flavour, the toasted oak is evident but doesn t obscure the rich meaty fruit. Deeper and more serious than in 2014 this has a long life ahead of it. Drink from MOREY SAINT DENIS 1ER CRU RUCHOTS From the vineyard Les Ruchots, these vines were planted in 1969 on about a quarter of a hectare of flat land. Drink from CLOS DE LA ROCHE GRAND CRU VERY LIMITED AVAILABILITY year old vines aged in 100% new oak. A nose of big rich dark fruits. The palate has great concentration but combines the power with wonderful finesse. It is just a shame that Remi only has just 432 bottles available. It is clear to see why this appellation is sometimes described as the Mozart of Burgundy! Drink from

DOMAINE CATHERINE ET CLAUDE MARECHAL In Côte d'or parlance, Claude Maréchal is a flatlander. That means that he is from the plain, rich in grains and produce, that extends from the river Saône to the ridge of hills where the prestigious Burgundy vineyards are planted. Claude Maréchal is a gifted and thoughtful winemaker in his mid forties. In his early days he rather sensibly befriended the iconic, Henri Jayer (a fellow "flatlander" who many years prior settled in Vosne-Romanée), Following his instincts and his mentor, Claude is fastidious about keeping treatments in the vineyards to a minimum and striving for low yields. No herbicides are used, the vineyards are ploughed, and all grapes are harvested manually and totally destemmed. Fermentation occurs slowly with native yeasts and maceration takes place over 20 days. Once again one of the highlights of our trip and this years special treat was a 1997 Auxey Duresses which was still remarkable fresh! WHITE 2015 BOURGOGNE BLANC CUVEE ANTOINE % new oak. This has an enchanting, expressive and aromatic nose accompanied by a broad toasty palate with a good combination of citrus fruits and minerality. Drink from mid SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE BLANC A very, very good Savigny Blanc. Its minerality sets off its roundness and fruitiness. A little structure, a nice freshness and finesse. Lots of charm and pure pleasure in this wine. Drink from late REDS 2015 BOURGOGNE ROUGE CUVEE GRAVEL Having been hugely impressed with the 2014 Cuvée Gravel this vintage is a big leap forward. More fruit character and less earthiness than in A huge overachiever in its class, this is a very moreish wine that over delivers in every way. Drink from late AVAILABLE IN MAGNUM (6 MAGNUMS) AUXEY DURESSES This wine displays floral, beautifully high toned aromas. It is graceful and stylish as always and shows all the concentration and elegance you would expect from It s already quite irresistible to drink with its showy personality and having tasted the 1997 vintage with Claude I would be tempted to keep a case back a few years! Drink from LADOIX LES CHAILLOTS An underrated commune that can in the right hands produce Aloxe-Corton style of wines. Suffice to say it is in the right hands. The bouquet is flattering with hints of red fruits, candied fruit, fresh wood and tobacco. The palate is delicate and silky tannins provide a good length and a nice character. Drink from SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE VIEILLES VIGNES From 60 year old plus vines. Lovely, rich and full of red cherry fruit, this is more about charm than power and a fine minerality comes through on the very pretty finish. As mentioned last year I think this a wine that will benefit from ageing. Drink from VOLNAY Full of crunchy red fruit with great depth and concentration. Although Volnay is thought of as a feminine style there is real power and concentration on show and you can imagine the more gamey element coming to the fore in years to come. Fantastic. Drink from POMMARD LE CHANIERE Its colour is the deep, dark red with mauve highlights which caused Victor Hugo to speak of it as night in combat with day. The nose is packed full of pure fruits. There is just a hint of the chocolaty character that will become more obvious in years to come and a few herbal notes as well. It needs to be given time to open up to its fullest extent and to display its mouth-filling texture, its firm but delicate structure, its fruit-filled mouth, and its chewy tannins, which by then will be properly smoothed down. A rich wine? Without a doubt! Drink from AVAILABLE IN MAGNUM (6 MAGNUMS)

DOMAINE A-F GROS Anne-Françoise Gros, originally of Vosne-Romanée, is married to François Parent of Pommard, where they live, though their wines have been made in substantial premises in Beaune since Their joint living as wine-makers is ably assisted by their children Caroline (pictured) and Mathieu. We were extremely well looked after by Caroline and Mathieu on our visit and all of the wines showed remarkably well. AF Gros have also shown restraint with their pricing with only one wine increasing in price. Two of the top wines of the trip were tasted at Gros The Beaune 1er Cru Montrevenots was a treat and the Richebourg was clearly wine of the trip (as it should be!) WHITES 2015 BEAUNE BLANC 1ER CRU MONTREVENOTS Montrevenots is located high on the slope above the famous Beaune Clos des Mouches vineyard on the Pommard border. The soil is very stony and this has helped to create a wine with minerality but is also deep, rich and concentrated. Distinct floral notes are also present on the palate. Absolutely stunning! Drink from REDS 2015 BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR Elegance and finesse with aromas of cherry, raspberry, candied strawberry, violet and undergrowth, the body is marked by fine tannins. This is truly impressive and will drink wonderfully over the next couple of years. Drink from now HAUTES COTE DE NUITS ROUGE Full of rich juicy fruit! The nose has a slightly savoury element intermingled with cherries and blackberries. The palate has a little structure and the tannins are fine and well-integrated. Delicious! Drink from SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE 1ER CRU LE CLOS DES GUETTES Powerful yet elegant bouquet, predominantly cherry, blackcurrant, raspberry changing to a mostly strawberry aroma after a few years. Supple, discreetly tannic and low in acidity, the wine has a light, fine structure. Allow to develop over time. Drink from BEAUNE 1ER CRU BOUCHEROTTES Les Boucherottes is on the Pommard side of the commune and abuts two of my favourite vineyards in Beaune, Les Vignes Franches and Clos des Mouches Bright red, finesse and harmony. With a light taste of violets, black cherries and black currant, and a slight oak nuance in the finish. The soft harmony with the light tannins makes this wine silky and velvety. Drink from VOSNE ROMANEE MAIZIERES This village appellation vineyard is located at the foot of the Grands-Echezeaux, close to Clos-Vougeot. A wine of velvety elegance and finesse that ages harmoniously. It is an excellent example of Vosne-Romanée. Cherry colour, fragrant nose and a richness balanced by a judicious amount of tannins and acidity. Drink from POMMARD 1 ER CRU LES CHANLINS This vineyard is situated on the slope between Pommard and Volnay, and the neighbouring Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens. The wines produced here are elegant and subtle, with pure Pinot Noir notes, with a slight touch of minerality which is associated with this «terroir». It is long in the mouth, with complexity and class, with suave tannins. Drink from ECHEZEAUX GRAND CRU VERY LIMITED AVAILABILITY 6 bottles A product of the Champs-Traversins, a Vineyard also known as «Le Petit Cîteaux» by a select few, this wine has an intense concentration of fruit evoking mature aromas. Despite its seductive nature, give it time to show its full splendour. Drink from RICHEBOURG GRAND CRU VERY LIMITED AVAILABILITY 6 bottles Ripe red fruit, especially cherry and raspberry, flowers, and sweet spice, made in a distinctly elegant style with silky tannins. Although quite forward for Richebourg, this wine shows the same underlying smoky minerality and bitter earth components of its kin. The depth, richness and density of this wine's flavour is what makes it great, and there's plenty there to suggest this has all it needs to become a superstar. Drink from

DOMAINE GAELLE ET JEROME MEUNIER Gaëlle (pictured) and Jérôme Meunier are based in the village of Barizey, 5 miles from Mercurey. Their wines are rich and easy going in style with great balance, purity and depth of fruit. Their style very much suits the 2015 vintage rich, elegant whites and youthful, fruity reds. WHITES 2015 MERCUREY VILLAGES BLANC This is rich and riper than in 2014 with good acidity. The wine does see oak ageing but this is handled sympathetically and is very well integrated. Drink from late MERCUREY BLANC 1ER CRU Mineral, stone fruit and lemons fill the nose with subtle hints of oak. The palate shows wonderfully pure fruit, great rich minerality and a lovely long balanced finish. Drink from REDS 2015 MERCUREY VILLAGES ROUGE To many, Mercurey combines both the best value and the best quality of the entire Côte Chalonnaise appellation, with lightly earthy but well developed and intense reds that are classically austere and can benefit from aging. In 2015 the wines although still very approachable young have more backbone than in 2014 nd as with the last vintage it is packed full of ripe dark fruits. Drink from MERCUREY 1ER CRU The 1er cru comes from two parcels. The first is Sazenay with close to one acre of vines averaging 45 years of age. The second is Clos l Evèque at one-third of an acre and averaging 65 years of age. Aging is in barrel for fourteen months, about 30% of which is new. This is deeper and richer with a brooding quality. The finish has lovely silky tannins and will benefit from a couple of years ageing. Drink from

MAISON LOUIS LATOUR Louis Latour's exceptional domaine covers 50 hectares and includes the largest collection of Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. A négociant-éleveur with soul, the house is still independent and managed by the founding family, headed up by Louis-Fabrice Latour who is the seventh Louis and the 11th generation of the Latour family to lead the company. WHITES 2015 PULIGNY MONTRACHET Latour s Puligny-Montrachet 2015 has a pretty yellow colour with golden pale reflections. The nose is elegant and floral with notes of acacia and brioche. The mouth is full, round with aromas of fresh almond, grapefruit and apricot. Drink from CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU MORGEOT The "Morgeot" has a pretty pale gold colour. The nose reveals notes of honey, vanilla with a floral touch. The palate is very balanced with notes of yellow fruits, almonds and fresh hazelnuts. Delicious saline finish. Drink from MEURSAULT 1ER CRU PERRIERES months ageing in oak barrels, 50% new. The complex nose offers notes of citrus, vanilla flowers and almond paste. The mouth is marvellous, it offers notes of brioche and almonds. A very nice persistence, with a lot of freshness on the finish. Drink from PULIGNY MONTRACHET 1ER CRU LES REFERTS The 2015 Les Referts" has a pale gold colour and delivers aromas of white fruits, mango and vanilla. The ample and round mouth offers a bouquet of mango, vanilla and Sechuan pepper with a fresh finish. Drink from CORTON CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU The 2015 Corton shows an intense and complex nose of grilled almond with lightly smoked notes. Aromas of almond paste blends with flinty notes. The mouth is powerful, generous and frank. We also find toasty notes and fresh almond aromas. Very beautiful length, with nice minerality. Drink from REDS 2015 VOLNAY 1ER CRU EN CHEVRET From 25 year old vines and aged in oak barrels for 10 months (35% new). On the nose, a lightly minty freshness with liquorice, coffee and black currant notes. The mouth is ample and powerful and offers black currant and mocha aromas. The tannins are elegant. Drink from CHATEAU CORTON GRANCEY GRAND CRU Grancey" was the name of the last owners of the chateau situated on the road of Corton, before the Latour family bought it in This wine, produced by Maison Louis Latour, is unique and exclusive. It is a blend of four areas of the Domaine Latour Corton Grand Cru: Les Bressandes, Les Perrières, Les Grèves and Clos du Roi. With a purple hue this Grand Cru exhales aromas of cassis, saffron and earthiness. In the mouth the tannins envelop a lovely cherry fruitiness and are powerful yet silky. Excellent in 2015 Drink from CHARMES CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU VERY LIMITED AVAILABILITY The Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin 2015 reveals a pretty garnet robe with purple reflections. The complex nose offers aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and more spicy and roasted notes of toast, almond, clove and Madagascar pepper. On the palate, this wine is powerful with spicy notes and has intense and persistent finish. Drink from GRANDS ECHEZEAUX GRAND CRU VERY LIMITED AVAILABILITY The 2015 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru is a delight to be hold. It has a dark brooding ruby colour. The intense and complex nose offers aromas of brioche, spices, blackcurrant and cocoa. We feel seduced by its ample, very round mouth that reveals notes of mint and mocha. Smooth tannins and very nice freshness in the final. Drink from

Burgundy 2016 Report Burgundy s 2016 vintage will be remembered as complicated in every sense. Hail and then rampant mildew, nourished by a moist Spring, followed hard on the heels of the most severe frost in a generation, devastating much of the region and leaving many growers with few grapes to harvest. In the space of two months, what had promised to be a generous vintage was decimated or worse. As an example, Domaine Belleville (one of our largest Burgundy producers) had 18,000 bottles of Rully Blanc in 2015 but will have only 1,800 bottles to sell next year. It is easy to see why prices have risen in recent years. July and August and September were warm, dry and sunny too, and this spell of consistently good weather managed to salvage the vintage for those with grapes still on their vines. All things considered, spirits were surprisingly buoyant along the Côte d Or as harvest began, starting with Chardonnay in Meursault around 20 September. Light rain showers in late September gave the vines water they needed, but the good weather held until the beginning of October, when more sustained rainfall created challenging conditions in which to harvest. By then, of course, many growers had finished picking. By mid-october, only a few late-harvesters in the Macônnais still had fruit on the vine: fortunately, Marcel Couturier had finished his harvest by this stage is such a complicated vintage because the different scourges that beset the vineyards did so remarkably unevenly. Only Chablis almost entirely stripped bare of grapes by the worst frost since 1981 can be described, unhappily, as consistent. The morning after frost in Burgundy, April Fires have been lit around vineyards to keep buds warm. Frost damage in the Côte d Or was severe too, striking on 26/7 April, the worst there since 1985; but unlike the frost of 1985, which damaged almost exclusively the lower-lying vines, the frost of 2016 also struck higher-elevation sites all the while in some cases, unaccountably, leaving lower-lying vineyards untouched. Old vignerons along the Côte can remember nothing like it. The outbreak of mildew that followed also struck vineyards erratically, and much depended on the timing of treatments; in 2016, many growers were forced to suspend their biodynamic principles in order that they had at least some grapes to harvest. 25
