A CAFÉ RENÉ HISTORY Café Rene is absolutely steeped in history. The foundations are part of the original Roman Settlement in Gloucester and the Roman well can be found at the entrance to the bar. In the mid 15 th Century the Greyfriars monastery was completed. The ruins can still be seen today. The monks, to make wine & ales, used the building of Café Rene. Tunnels were created under the building connecting to the Cathedral and many key points across the city reaching as far as Barnwood. During the Reformation these tunnels became invaluable to the monks as escape routes though many were thought to have died in this actual building. Legend has it excavations in the 1970 s unearthed a body dating back to that time and many locals connect the body to the resident ghost that appears quite regularly in the main bar! Oliver Cromwell used the very tunnels underneath the building to make his escape from the Cavaliers during the English Civil war. For many years Café René remained closed until the late 1970 s when it was decided to reinstate the building to its original purpose and sell real ales and wines. During the refurbishment a series of sealed rooms were discovered with what appeared to be British top-secret documents. The Home Office had everything removed immediately but rumour (and a certain amount of snooping before they were removed!) infers that this very building was one of the secret MI6 emergency headquarters of World War Two. Today with an ambience that cannot be matched, Café René is still an all time favourite for locals and visitors to Gloucester.
