I scream! We all scream for ice cream! For most Americans, the phrase ice cream brings up memories of summer, like ice cream cones, banana splits, hot fudge sundaes, root beer floats, and buying a scoop from the drug store when it only cost a dime. Ice cream is the ultimate old fashioned treat. This dessert has a history that stretches all around the world. In India, there s kulfi. In Italy, gelato. In Japan, mochi. It seems every country has its own spin on the delicious frozen treat we Americans call ice cream. It is impossible to say how exactly ice cream reached America, but it likely arrived with European settlers in the early 1700 s. By this time, several books on confectionery had been produced and included recipes for ices and ice cream. Housewives would serve these treats to guests in the shape of vegetables, fruits and animals, thanks to special ice cream molds. In 1790, the first ice cream parlor opened in New York. During the summer of the same year, our first president, George Washington, is said to have spent $200 to satisfy his craving for the refreshing treat. Thomas Jefferson is said to have kept several ice houses, able to hold up to 62 wagonloads of ice, along with huge amounts of ice cream! The Lincolns had a taste for the cold stuff. Before and during his presidency, Abraham Lincoln s wife Mary Todd frequently hosted strawberry parties for friends and served strawberries served with cake and you guessed it ice cream. Though its history spans worldwide and over centuries, ice cream has made itself quite comfortable in America, becoming one of the most popular desserts in the country.
2 Meadows Happenings Welcome Summer! We celebrated the start of summer on Friday, June 22 nd with a fun party under our front canopy! Everyone enjoyed the beautiful day with a sweet watermelon treat, fun oldies music and kicking beach balls. Plenty of laughter and smiles were included! Garden Update! Work on the garden has begun! Cap, the young man who is doing his Eagle Scout project is diligently at work! We are excited about this great addition to The Meadows. Y all It s Cow Appreciation! Tuesday, July 10 th is Cow Appreciation Day! Chick-fil-A hosts a wonderful and fun celebration in which our residents and family members have had a BLAST attending in the past. We d love for you to join us! Please RSVP to Marisa so we may ensure that you have your cow themed attire! We will leave from here at 10:45am for lunch. The lunch is FREE. Check with Marisa for the menu choices so we can have our order ready. It s sure to be a great time for all! French? Fries July 13 is French Fries Day, but are these delicious fried potatoes actually French? Potatoes did not originate in Europe, but in South America. Spanish explorers brought them back to Europe, where they became beloved for their versatility, especially in France. Fried potatoes became a common street food in Paris sold not as long fries but in chunks. It is said that Thomas Jefferson grew so fond of the food while acting as ambassador to France that he introduced fries to America. It is in Belgium, that the history of frites began a century before France s fried potatoes. Frites (pronounced FREETS) are so dear a food to Belgium that in 2014 the country petitioned to make the fried potatoes the official symbol of its cultural heritage. So when did Belgian frites become French fries? The story goes that American soldiers marching through French-speaking Belgium during World War I discovered the tasty fried potatoes. The American soldiers then called the delicious new fried potatoes French fries. Ice Cream Party Answers: 1.) N 2.) F 3.) K 4.) H 5.) D 6.) B 7.) C 8.) E 9.) Q 10.) R 11.) J 12.) P 13.) G 14.) L 15.) 3 Resident Spotlight Betty Gastineau Betty Jean Kohler was born on May 9 th, 1926 in Ettrick, Wisconsin to her parents Elvin and Beatrice. She was the third child in her family. Betty grew up in the small town of Parteeville, Wisconsin with her 5 brothers and 2 sisters. During her teens Betty worked at the local ice cream parlour. She says that the ice cream was made on site and it was the most popular place in town. She said the best part was at the end of the day when they got to eat as much ice cream as they wanted! Betty met Carl Gastineau and they were married on June 10 th, Carl was in the Army. The couple lived in Wisconsin and Colorado before moving to Arkansas. While they lived in Colorado they adopted their only daughter, Cindy. Betty reminisced about a family vacation to Alaska in their station wagon. They had a mattress in the back and it was quite an adventure going through the mountains! Betty has two twin grandchildren, Brittany of Pea Ridge, Arkansas and Christopher of Texas. She has 3 beautiful great-granddaughters. While living in Bentonville, Arkansas Betty worked as a payroll clerk. She worked for the same company for 26 years before retiring. In her spare time she enjoyed making quilts for friends and family and crocheting. Sometime after her husband passed away Betty took a cruise in the Caribbean with friends. Betty can best be described as quiet and gentle. She says she finds great comfort in being at The Meadows. We are grateful to have Betty as a part of our community. Blowing Springs Park During the summer months it is a great experience to get out to the Blowing Springs Park in Bella Vista to hear the music of the Community Band. We attended on Tuesday, June 12 th and will plan to go again on Tuesday, July 31 st. We invite any family or friends who would like to go with us. Bring a lawn chair if you have one.
