Traditionally celebrated by people of Chinese origin on the 15 th day of the 8 th lunar month, Mid-Autumn Festival, 中秋节 takes place when the moon is said to be at its brightest and roundest.

2 Traditionally celebrated by people of Chinese origin on the 15 th day of the 8 th lunar month, Mid-Autumn Festival, 中秋节 takes place when the moon is said to be at its brightest and roundest. Of the many rich legends associated with Mid-Autumn, perhaps the favourite of most is the tale of two star crossed lovers, Houyi and Chang e. According to ancient myths, ten suns rose in the sky together causing widespread famine to the country. To save mankind, divine archer Houyi shot down nine suns, leaving only one. For his heroism, he was rewarded with an elixir of immortality by the Gods which would allow him to ascend to Heaven. However, Houyi gave the elixir to his beloved wife, Chang e for safekeeping as he was unwilling to leave her behind. One day, in her bid to protect the elixir from a thief, Chang e was forced to drink the elixir and thereafter, ascended to the moon where she lived forever. Houyi was devastated and from that day onwards, he began to worship the moon with offerings in remembrance of Chang e. This day is now commemorated as the Mid-Autumn Festival. Mooncakes were created to honour Chang e, the Moon Goddess of Immortality, with the yolk in the mooncake representing the brilliant, round moon on this night. Celebrations go into full swing once the sun sets, with families coming together to play with lanterns, indulge in mooncakes and sip on tea, while admiring the beauty of the full moon illuminated in the night sky.
