Not pictured: Anna. Welcome Profitability In a recent study performed by Beef magazine, producers number one concern regarding profitability was input costs. What better way is there to reduce those costs than purchasing genetics from a herd that has stacked generations of cattle focusing on this very important profitability trait? Efficiency We test the efficiency of our cow herd every day by demanding that they perform under real-world, sometimes-harsh conditions. These cows thrive on fescue grass and grass hay alone. No high-cost feed, energy or protein supplements are fed. This is the surest way to ensure profit. The calves are not creep fed and they make it through our harsh winters on their mothers milk and grass hay alone. Growth Low-input genetics do not have to be low growth! Our cattle prove that. It s about body type and the ability to not only convert low quality forages to beef yet also respond with excellent weight gain when exposed to high supplemental feed. Our cattle excel in depth and spring of rib along with natural muscling. Essential traits for the efficient production of BEEF. Structure and longevity Tremendous selection pressure has and will continue to be put on these important traits. No one thing relates to longevity better than structural soundness. Replacements are too costly to have to cull a cow for any reason by the time she s 5. Fertility The number one trait affecting profitability for cattle producers. A cow must wean a good healthy calf each year. If not, she s costing you money. This trait is at the very top of our list of selection criteria. Ginger Hill females are feminine, deep bodied and wedge shaped. Their male counterparts are masculine, muscular and virile. Fescue toxicity Billions of dollars each year are lost by cattlemen due to fescue toxicity. Tremendous differences exist in lines of cattle and how well they perform on endophyte-infected pasture. Over the 5-6 decades we ve been breeding cattle, we have developed genetic lines that excel in resistance to this toxic ergot alkaloid. Muscle and eye appeal Our bulls are naturally thick, not fat. They have the capacity and natural base width to convert low quality feedstuffs to muscle and flesh. In addition, they are also pleasing to the eye with strong tops and clean underlines. They won t melt like a lot of over-fed fat bulls that have been developed on a kill ration. Sustainability The most profitable and sustainable programs concentrate on genetics that excel in maternal, not terminal traits. Replacement costs are far too high for cows that break down at 5-6 years. If you are in this for the long range then buying bulls that excel in strong maternal genetics is a must.

Bred by Jim Wilson of Whitewood, SD, 141 will continue to be a positive influence in our breeding program. Ginger Hill Angus has devoted over six decades developing a unique program with unique genetics. Our cowherd is known for its ability to thrive and flesh on low quality forages as well as produce progeny that excel in muscle, volume, and soundness with the ability to provide explosive growth when exposed to higher energy feeds. The mark of an efficient cow herd is one that can thrive under varying and sometimes harsh conditions. We consider ourselves commercial producers of superior registered Angus genetics. Our cow herd is managed like most good commercial herds by design. No expensive high cost supplements are fed while these cows do their job raising their calves though our cold wet winters. This past winter was particularly long and cold. Our best hay tested no higher than 9% protein, yet these cows did their jobs. That way we test efficiency under the real-world conditions of commercial cattle. Only the good doing efficient females can stand up, produce a good calf and breed back year after year, generation after generation. We ve spent most of our lives developing lines of cattle that are resistant to the toxic effects of ergot alkaloids produced by endophyte infected fescue pastures. These females are designed with muscle, depth and spring of rib yet maintain femininity and maternal characteristics reflective of their proper hormonal balance. 6 CROOK MT ALLY WINDY Reference Sire I Ginger 6 Hill Angus This sale offering consists of many cows that represent continuous generations of breeding and selecting cattle for real-world commercial producers. 17 This bull sale offering is the result of a cow herd that has been selected with commercial farmers and ranchers in mind. We realized a long time ago that in order for our customers to be profitable, we must produce cattle that can thrive under commercial management conditions. The result are wide based, deep bodied heavy muscled bulls that are genetically designed to sire easy calving progeny that will grow early and fast with the genetic ability to sire outstanding, long lived, maternal replacements. We don t over feed our bulls in order to promote fertility, longevity and soundness. They were raised on their dams through winter without the help of creep. We wean in late May when some of these bulls were approaching 9 months of age. Early weaning is not performed as our cows can easily flesh up with 3 months off each summer. After weaning the bulls are grown on fescue pasture and hand fed a modest amount of a commodity pelleted ration. We are not in a race or fat bull contest. This way they will better stand up for you when turned out with cows. All bulls have been fertility tested by Jay Douglass and sell guaranteed as breeders. These bulls are as masculine as our females are feminine. Sex character is reflective of a proper hormonal balance so important in reproductive efficiency. Each and every one of the bulls selling was born without assistance. Calving ease is affected by birth weight and proper shape. This year we used separate contemporary groups for the 1st calf heifers and cows. We feel that in our herd and under our management the current American Angus Association age of dam adjustment factor is not a fair or accurate way to compare the heifer s calves vs. the cowherd. Even though they are run as one management group, two contemporary groups were used. Feel free to call and come by our place to preview the offering. We d also be happy to address any questions and assist you in your selection process. We hope to see you sale day. If you cannot attend, you may watch and bid online at DVAuction.com. Most of today s cattle producers list feed and input costs high among their concerns. We ve selected our cattle under these same low-cost management conditions for six decades. After nine generations in Rappahannock County and almost 60 years of raising Angus cattle, we understand what it takes to be sustainable and profitable over time. Since Newbill Miller started selling bulls, the Ginger Hill program has stayed true to a vision of cattle that are structurally correct, perform on an all-forage diet, and show maternal strength though fertility and longevity. Ginger Hill cows represent some of the best grassland genetics in the country.
