2 Don t go it alone! You may want to tell your friends about your pregnancy so they can respect and support your decision to avoid alcohol during this period. Your partner and social circle can make a diference with a few simple actions like: Providing non-alcoholic beverages at social events Joining you in your sobriety Learning about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy and sharing what they learned with their friends and family

4 An alcohol-free pregnancy is the safest choice Just found out you are pregnant? It s not too late to stop drinking. If you have concerns about your alcohol consumption, talk to a health professional. A little or a lot, frequently or rarely: Don t risk it! The fetus s brain develops throughout the pregnancy. There is no barrier, not even the placenta, that protects it against exposure to alcohol. This means, regardless of the trimester, there is no safe time to drink alcohol during your pregnancy. And there is no safe amount either. No one knows the efects on the fetus of a small amount of alcohol, even on an occasional basis. No alcohol is the safest option. The efects of alcohol on the fetus are the same whether you drink beer, wine, or hard liquor.

5 Mocktail recipes Opt for non-alcoholic cocktails, beers, and wine for every occasion. Why not use beer or wine glasses for serving milk, juice, and water! For occasions like dinners and parties, consult the following pages for lots of great suggestions. For women with gestational diabetes: Avoid fruit juices as they are high in sugar Reduce sugar levels of some of the beverages presented here by making the suggested adjustments Consult your nutritionist to make smart choices. Check with a nutritionist or your health professional which herbal teas and herbs are safe to consume during pregnancy.

6 Fruity bubbly Mix 4 cup (60 ml) carbonated water and 2 cup (125 ml) fresh fruit juice. Garnish glass with a wedge of apple. Source : Enjoy nine healthy months! Évasion St-Pie X Sun-kissed juice Fill a glass with ice cubes and add: 2 cup (125 ml) orange juice 2 cup (125 ml) cranberry juice Decorate with an orange slice.

7 Café au lait Heat one cup of milk. Add brewed cofee or soluble cofee powder (to taste). Add a bit of sugar or sweetener, to taste (optional). Adjustment for gestational diabetes: Skip the sugar or use a sweetener instead. 1 adjusted recipe = 1 milk (11 g carbohydrates) Diabolo In a tall glass, combine: ¾ cup carbonated water or uncoloured soda drink 1 tbsp. (15 ml) grenadine syrup

8 Virgin Caesar Rub the rim of a glass with a slice of lime, then dip in celery salt. Garnish glass with a wedge of fresh lime. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add: 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 4 tsp. Tabasco 4 tsp. lime juice Top up with vegetable juice and stir with a celery stalk. Source : Enjoy nine healthy months! Évasion St-Pie X Virgin Colada In a blender, puree 2 cup (125 ml) fresh pineapple. Add 3 cup (85 ml) coconut milk and ice cubes. Puree again. Pour into a glass and garnish with a slice of pineapple. Gestational diabetes calculation: recipe = 1 fruit (15 g carbohydrates)

9 Virgin Caipirhina Fill a glass with tonic water and add: Juice of one lime 1 tbsp. (15 ml) sugar (optional) Stir and garnish with a wedge of lime and a paper umbrella. Adjustment for gestational diabetes: Skip the sugar or use a sweetener instead. 1 adjusted recipe = 0 g carbohydrate Bubbly iced tea Steep a teabag in 4 cup (60 ml) of boiling water for a few minutes. Cool in the fridge. Top up with lavoured or unlavoured carbonated water. Add ice cubes and fruit (to taste). Adjustment for gestational diabetes: Opt for sugar-free water.
