2 OLD FASHIONED Undeniable the best-seller since the word cocktail was first defined in the Columbia Repository in 1806, as a proper mixture of liquor, sugar, water and bitters. Its name originates from 1880s, when cars started filling the streets and colorful, fashionable cocktails started to emerge into bars. However, ironically, most people were asking bartenders:"give me a cocktail old-fashioned way". And naturally, the name of the cocktail became Old Fashioned. The trends come and go, but an Old Fashioned is Old Fashioned, and it s here to stay forever, to please the uncurable classics. 3 MANHATTAN There are many theories to how the Manhattan came about to the bar world. Was it Dr Iain Marshall in the early 1880s that came up with the recipe for a party at the Manhattan Club in New York City by Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston s mother or was it a man going by the name of Black at the famed Hoffman House in New York City? We really don t know for sure, but it definitely emerged in the 1880s, and it s one of the first ones with vermouth as a modifier. It is the king of vermouth drinks. The ruler of the realm. 4 NEGRONI Thought to have been invented in 1919, in Florence, Italy at Caffè Casoni. The story goes that Count Camillo Negroni asked his friend and bartender Fosco Scarselli, to strengthen his favourite cocktail, the Americano. He did so by switching the soda for gin and garnished it with an orange peel to signify it was a different drink. Soon, everyone was coming into the bar and ordering a Count Negroni. Anyway more than anything, though, what helped popularize the Negroni is its simplicity. This is a drink almost impossible to snafu: The only danger, of course, is how easily you can make another one... 5 GIMLET Popular among British officers back in the 19th Century, protecting their sailors from the deadly scurvy with its vitamin C rich Citrus juice.apparently it used to be administered as a medicine shot: Gin with lime to mask the bitter taste. 6 WHISKY SOUR Sours - unarguably the oldest and most important of all cocktail categories, well known for their classy scaled down punch of its base spirit, water, sugar and citrus mix. The first record of a sour appears in 1856, as part of the hand-written list of the 107 mixed drinks then offered at Ackermann's Saloon in Toronto, Canada. The first known written recipe for a sour appears six years later in Jerry Thomas '1862 Book: The Bartender's Guide', which has recipes for a brandy, gin and a rum sour. 7 MOJITO Mojito was born in Cuba and has quite a disputed history. Some say it was created by an associate of the famed explorer Sir Francis Drake, famed explorer of the 1500s, who landed in the city of Havana to sack it of its precious gold. Others claim that it was invented by African slaves working in the Cuban sugar cane fields. The name " mojito " stems from the African word of "mojo which means to cast a spell. Mojito rose to prominence of the international world when Ernest Hemingway became its fan, at" La Bodeguita del Medio" and also consumed the drink in Key West, Florida. While we may never know the true origin of the drink, the tasty combination of rum, lime and mint is sure to stick around. 8 FRENCH 75 The drink was first recorded in the 1920s, first in Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails by Harry MacElhone, and in Robert Vermeire's work. The recipes differed from the current form and name, until Judge Jr. s Here s how, where the name French 75 and the recipe was established and then republished in The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930), which helped popularize it. Some later cocktail books use Cognac instead of gin, such as The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks by David A. Embury. The French 75 was popularized in America at the Stork Club in New York. It appears in the movie Casablanca and in the John Wayne films A Man Betrayed and Jet Pilot. 9 JUNGLE BIRD According to the first traceable Jungle Bird cocktail recipe in The New American Bartender s Guide by John J. Poister in 1989, it was created in 1978 in the former KL Hilton s Aviary Bar on Jalan Sultan Ismail. The original recipe consists of generic dark rum, Campari, pineapple juice, lime and simple syrup. Jeff Berry, in his 2002 book Intoxica, recorded the recipe with Jamaican rum, making it more specific. Then in 2010, blackstrap rum was used by renowned bartender Giuseppe Gonzalez, further attracting intentional attention to Jungle Bird. Ready to go wild? 10 MULE The cocktail buck (mule) is thought to have been created in 1921 by pat McGarry, the first bartender at the Buck's Club in London; and is listed as one of 21 "fizzes" in Harry Craddock's 1930 the Savoy Cocktail Book. Buck is an old name for a family of mixed drinks lengthened with ginger ale. In other words, it is the originator of Moscow Mule years ago, Sophie Berezinski, daugther of Moscow Copper Co. founder, came to America with 2,000 solid copper mugs and the monumental task of selling them. Luck intervened when Berezinski wandered into Hollywood s Cock n Bull pub and met John Martin, who just purchased the struggling Smirnoff distillery and Jack Morgan, the bar s owner who was trying to get his guests to fall in love with his own brand of ginger beer.together, the three developed a cocktail recipe that would save each of their respective ventures. 11 SANGRIA From its humble roots in Spain, Sangria has grown to become a popular, refreshing party drink around the world. Over 2,000 years ago the Romans made their way through the Iberian Peninsula and planted vineyards along the way. As water at that time was considered unsafe for drinking, it was common to fortify it with alcohol to kill off any bacteria. The first sangrias (whose name comes from sangre, blood in Spanish, in reference to the red wine used ) were likely heavily watered down mixes of wine, water, and herbs and spices. YAMAZAKI 12 JAPANESE MALT / Alc. 43% / Aged 12 Years / 58.0 / A good body filled with plenty of nut oils and zest, combined with a pleasant floral character with tropical fruits and a rooty notes on the nose. It is smooth and soft with balanced sweetness of winter spices and lovely citrus that develops to tropical fruit and rum hints on the palate. Spiced wood and dried cranberries finish with a lasting muddle of orange marmalade and honey sweetness. A generous bust of tropical fruits and dried raisins opens the palate with a warming smoke that continues to waft playfully. LAGAVULIN 16 ISLAY MALT / Alc. 43% / Aged 16 Years / 32.0 / Lagavulin is a classic example of how smoke isn't a blunt instrument that covers everything in a fog, but an element that works with all the flavours produced in distillation and maturation. Lagavulin isn't 'smokey,' its peat moves into a queer territory of Lapsang Souchong tea and pipe tobacco, fishboxes and kippers. It smells of laurel and light cereal, but is always sweet. The palate shows more creosote, with hints of kelp and a little touch of iodine. ARDBEG CORRYVRECKAN ISLAY MALT / Alc. 57.1% / No Age Statement / 38.0 / Heady and intense with a combination of waxy dark chocolate, warm blackcurrants and muscovado sugar that puts you under its spell with a burst of plump cherries and earthy pin needles leaping from its depths. Torrents of taste well up on the palate; deep, peppery and chewy, bombarding the tongue with its intense taste and textures. Leaving a long, deep and powerful finish with black tarry coffee, chocolate-coated cherries and hot pepper sauce. JURA SUPERSTITION ISLAND MALT / Alc. 43% / No Age Statement / 30.0 / Initial gristy cereal gives way to evocative smoke and heady malt. It s quite sweet and creamy. Palate is sweet and porridge-like. A cereal feast on the tongue with hints of white pepper, black forest honey and hot buttered toast. Light and oily. Medium length finish with cocoa with hints of honey and spice on the tail.
