Our latest journey to meet our tea growers in Kenya Priding ourselves on our close working relationships with our tea growers, our Head of Tea Tasting James Jobling recently re-visited some of our Kenyan tea growers to see first-hand the work that goes into making one of our most popular teas, Kenyan Gold. James team works with several cooperative groups of smallholder farmers in Eastern Kenya who are part of the Kenyan Tea Development Agency (KTDA). Kenyan Gold blend is sourced exclusively from the KTDA- who are renowned for producing some of the best teas in the world. Because each farmer is a shareholder in the factory that they supply, they have a direct input into its management and success. This promotes continuous improvement, which ultimately results in the best quality teas for our Kenyan Gold blend says James. To protect the leaves from damage and ensure only the best leaves are selected, all Kenyan Gold tea leaves are hand-picked. The freshly picked leaves are then softened by withering before being rolled and shaped, then left to fully ferment to develop their full flavour. Finally, the teas are then carefully dried and packed. Protecting the flavour of the tea is imperative to Ringtons, that s why teas for our Kenyan Gold and Extra Fresh blends are vacuum packed at origin - it gives them a uniquely smooth, naturally sweet and fresh-tasting flavour. The vacuum sealed leaves are then carefully shipped from Mombasa to the UK via the Port of Tyne in the North East before being sent to our factory just 10 miles away. The vacuum sealed packs are only opened moments before blending and quickly packed into tea bags. Within minutes of the original vacuum sealed bags being opened the finished tea bags are divided up and repacked in special foil packaging. The oxygen is removed from the foil packaging to carefully preserve the leaves and further retain the flavour.
