5 Stamp Act When was it? March What was it? The first tax levied on the colonists. It was a tax on all paper documents. Colonists insisted the act was unconstitutional, rioted, and got it repealed. Why is it significant? It raised the issue of taxation without representation

6 The Townshend Acts When was it? June 29, 1767 What was it? It imposed duties on glass, lead, paints, paper and tea imported into the colonies. In 1770 it was repealed except for the tax on tea Why is it significant? Americans saw it as another abuse of power

7 The Boston Massacre When was it? March 5,1770 What was is? Five people were killed in Boston after a confrontation with British troops. The British officer in charge, Capt. Thomas Preston, was arrested for manslaughter, along with eight of his men; all were later acquitted. Why is it significant? The Boston Massacre is remembered as a key event in helping to galvanize the colonial public to the Patriot cause.

9 The Tea Act When was it? May What was it? Tax on tea to help save the East India Company. The British government gave the East India Company the authority to have a monopoly and heavy tax on tea to American colonies Boston Tea Party When was it? December 16, 1773 What was it? Colonists( Sons of Liberty) dumped East India Company tea into the Boston harbor. Why is it significant? It caused the British to pass the Coercive Acts This particular act of defiance was polarizing in the colonies. Why is it important? It led to the Boston Tea Party

10 Quartering Act: which required colonists to house and quarter British troops on The Intolerable Acts (Coercive Acts) When was it? March What was it? Acts meant to punish and cut off Boston,Massachusetts interaction and alliance with the other colonies. It ended up having the opposite effect. Boston Port Act: closed off all ports in Boston Massachusetts Government Act: restricted Massachusetts; democratic town meetings and turned the governor s council into an appointed body. Administration of Justice Act: made British officials immune to criminal prosecution in Massachusetts Quebec Act: extended freedom of worship to Catholics in Canada, as well as granting Canadians the continuation of their judicial system

11 SO WHAT? All these events angered American colonists. At that time, more than ever, American colonists felt unfairly treated by the British; it made British the common enemy among these diverse colonies. What do you think: Britain imposed most of the taxes/acts on American colonists as a result of colonists actions. Were they right to do so or were the Americans justified in their rebellious actions?
