LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF AMCHAM SLOVENIA Dear Members of the American Chamber of Commerce! perceived as the first station, as the speaker of the state into which they are entering and it depends from us whether their interest and the new connection will prove to be successful or not. AmCham has to be one of the main initiators at restoring connections and the request for invigorating bilateral economic cooperation between Slovenia and USA. We are attending to this duty with great responsibility and truly long for achieving greater successes which depend on numerous factors, above all on Slovene business and investment environment. We believe into exceptional potential of Slovenia for its natural and social resources and its geostrategical position for a bigger bilateral economic cooperation with USA. In the year of 2007 when I accepted the invitation to become the President of the American Chamber of Commerce, I realized the responsibility such function is bringing: a responsibility for association, for members and above all for the society in which the Chamber is taking an active part. Being the President of AmCham is a responsible task which notwithstanding brings contentment. However, the foreign investor looking at Slovenia today whether from the U.S. or elsewhere faces serious obstacles, including a lack of transparency; unnecessarily complex and time-consuming bureaucracy; and confusion over lead responsibility or jurisdiction among Slovenian Government agencies. The three most critical areas that need to be addressed are taxation, the labour market, and public procurement. When taken together, these barriers often give the impression that Slovenia remains largely closed to FDI. AmCham is a global network, present in almost all countries of the world. It is usually the agitator of changes, stimulator of competition and development, and above all the voice of international business. The significance of AmCham for the American companies, entering the new market, is exceptional. We are One of the important AmCham's tasks is also to with constructive suggestions contribute to a better business environment. Therefore we revived the activity of Working Committees and Groups constituted of extraordinary individuals and experts, employed at our members' companies. 4

A wide response of business events which enable the home and foreign businesspeople the exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences only in the last year we organized more than 25, and a persistent work of Committees is appointing us as an important voice of international business. With our work we have also managed to restore excellent connections with kindred AmChams throughout Europe and the world. A challenge in the following years will definitely be in how to put these connections to best use possible and how to show to all of our partners, especially the American that Slovenia is the proper country for investments. I am proud that we, at the AmCham Slovenia, have despite hard business circumstances in the last two years redoubled the number of our members who are at the moment numbering of more than 160. This is owing above all to the distinction of the organization, provided by You, dear Members. Besides already well-known Business Breakfasts, we initiated some additional events meant for particular groups, e.g. Executive Table, Professional Update, Business Luncheon I have been also honoured to have a special guest this year, General Colin L. Powell, who undoubtedly represents one of the most interesting leaders and personalities of the contemporary American history. And since we are very aware of the significance of the leadership and try to emphasize its meaning also in Slovenia, we established the AmCham Young Professionals, a programme in which our already successful members turn their knowledge and experiences over to the younger active generations. In June 2011, my second mandate as a President of AmCham will run out, and I will conclude my presidency at this important Chamber with great pride and contentment. I believe that the AmCham may improve, become more influential and stronger. And I know that the next President, one among You, will manage to attain the following aims: invigorating the reputation of AmCham in the society, searching for economic connections between the two countries and actively contributing to the formation of a more friendlier business environment in Slovenia. I am thanking particularly You and Your knowledge for enabling our Association to be one of the positive forces helping in creating an ambience in which one enjoys to live and create it not only for himself but above all for all of us. I consider it as a great honour that You confided in me and elected me as a President twice. I hope I proved trustworthy. It will be a great pleasure to remain an active member of the Chamber and together with You create new achievements and surpluses. 8 LETTER FROM THE CHARGÉ D'AFFAIRES of the United States of America Ljubljana, November,

Slovenia continues to shine. Over the past 19 years, Slovenia s economic and political achievements have forged a path for other transitioning economies to follow, making it an admired role model and leader in the region. Slovenia s struggles along the way, from strengthening its democratic institutions and establishing a strong market economy to resolving long-standing bilateral issues with some of its neighbors, will benefit not only this country, but also the region. Further, Slovenia s experience and leadership in turn advance political and economic health in the entire Western Balkans, promoting security and stability and facilitating the region s integration into European institutions. Belying its size, Slovenia has used its savvy, determination and unique geography to its advantage, becoming a significant and respected regional and international player. This past spring, Slovenia achieved another important milestone in joining the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Europe (OECD). It has also demonstrated its determined commitment to NATO responsibilities in Kosovo and Afghanistan. Slovenia has even made its presence felt in the international sports arena by impressive showings in the World Cup, and by advancing to the quarter finals in the World Basketball Championships. With the highest per capita GDP in the region and a competitive, diverse economy, Slovenia s future prospects look bright. The U.S. has excellent bilateral relations with Slovenia, but there is still ample room to strengthen our economic cooperation and partnership. As we search for mutually beneficial ways to address the impact of recent economic difficulties that have affected us all, we have an opportunity to increase bilateral trade and bring needed U.S. investment to Slovenia. There have been some encouraging signs, including the recent Ministry of Economy-sponsored Slovenian business delegations to New York and Ohio, and the Prime Minister s expressed willingness to partner with the U.S Embassy and American Chamber of Commerce to help improve Slovenia s business climate. Ambassador Joseph A. Mussomeli s imminent arrival will also bring new energy and vitality to our economic partnership. Key reforms, such as greater privatization, more openness to foreign investment, increased transparency in public procurement, and business and investor-friendly changes to Slovenia s labour and taxation code would support greater competiveness in the economy and increase opportunities for investment and partnership. I am deeply appreciative of the work of AmCham, its committees and members, to advance our shared business and economic goals, and wish you all much success in Sincerely, Bradley Freden Chargé d'affaires MEMBERS ECACC SLOVENIA YOUNG PROS EVENTS AMCHAM AmCham Yearbook 2010/11 7

Powell August 29, 2010 Tomaž F. Lovše, the President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovenia and the President of Diners Club Slovenia has on the occasion of the Bled Strategic Forum invited one of the most distinguished personalities within world politics, General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.), former Secretary of State in the years The esteemed guest was amazed at Bled and Slovenia and therefore used the official slogan of Slovenia:»I feel Slovenia«by adding»i feel love«. In honour of the distinguished guest, there was also a reception for AmCham Slovenia members held at Villa Beli dvor, kindly hosted by Mr. Janez Škrabec. General Powell addressed the invited guests at the gala inaugural dinner of the Bled Strategic Forum with his solemn speech entitled: ''The Next 10 Years: The Essential Challenges of the International Community, the Roles of USA, China and EU in a Multipolar World.'' The main message of his speech has been that one should look forward to the future with optimism. There have already some difficulties occurred in the past and some will certainly appear in the future, nevertheless he believes the power may be above all gained by a cooperation of small and large nations. As such, in his opinion, Slovenia as well, is able to play an important part in. A great occasion for such cooperation is at events and forums where representatives, heads of various countries meet and mutually search for opportunities for a better tomorrow. He emphasized the meaning of energetic efficiency, the importance in settling for a compromise. General Colin L. 40 Business Leaders Role Models in the Business World Written by: Ajša Vodnik M.Sc., Executive Director of AmCham Slovenia We all wish to model upon someone, follow someone's example, model upon people who with the right vision assure unity of aims and create a front and fusion of efficient people. In the business world this role becomes assumed by business leaders. There exist several definitions of business leadership, mine would run like this:»the leaders in a company with a suitable personality, strategic knowledge and skills, among which the communication with external and internal stake holdersis of key significance may become business leaders, who with an intentional managing of self reputation increase the intangible capital of the company.«there are several definitions possible in denoting the first people in the companies in Slovenia, e.g. director, manager, president of the board, among which there are no precise dividing lines or exact definitions. It is possible to define a leader in a business world if a distinction of personal characteristics, position and methods of leading is observed regarding a business leader and an executive director and may be concluded in an ascertainment that in the case of business leaders the leading prevails, whereas managing dominates in the case of managers (executive directors). A conception about a business leader functioning as a higher rank towards manager is not accurate as they in fact represent two different yet complementary functions at the same time. Taking into consideration a formal structure of a company, the role of business leaders should be assumed by presidents of the board or general directors, supposing that they already have excellent executive directors or managers and a good working organization within their companies. Business leaders are needed and are important within companies as the transformed social circumstances and the business rapidity require differently leading leaders. New challenges are showing in the environment, technology, social structure, culture, physical structure and the nature of activity. The change as the only constant requires an organizational culture, which can be introduced by powerful business leaders with the right vision and strategy, as well with the ability of good conformation to the changes and their introduction into organization. There are certain characteristics ascribed to business leaders such as charisma or even special magical attributes. Such comprehension is exaggerated, as a head in a company for becoming a business leader needs to have the right combination of personal qualities, knowledge and skills; human relationships; vision of the future and strategic attainments and the achievement of one's purposes. The right balance between a powerful leader and the guidance with the feeling for freedom and stimulation of an individual should be restored. However the communication represents the basis without which the leadership proves impossible. Therefore a business leader appears as a person with wide education, unlimited curiosity, steady enthusiasm, faith in people and in team work, eagerness 38

One of the main reasons for initiating the AmCham Young Professionals programmes definitely derives from our awareness of the fact that the reputation of management has wrongly due to large exposure of deviant representatives of managerial state fallen on an extremely low level. Therefore we are trying to represent to the young as well to the broader public some true stories about young, successful and interesting individuals who are fit for conquering the leading positions in the future and thus significantly influence the development of economy. We also wish to expose the already well recognized managers and leaders who excell themselves as great examples one can model upon and represent a pattern of exquisite practice. for taking risks, complete devotion to a longrange work and not to shortterm benefits, constant aspiration for superiority all over, willingness, irreproachability, virtues and vision. A business leader should have a well developed emotional intelligence, comprising the following components selfconfidence, self-control, motivation, empathy and networking skills. Among business leaders there are often people who enjoy the attentiveness which may prove either good or bad in a company. Such leaders usually have good visions, are keen to make people enthusiastic and have the courage to make one's vision a reality, whereas on the other side they may become too infatuated with themselves and therefore not really paying attention to their managers or others, following them. Nevertheless as it is the case at every business, some bad cases may occur as well, sadly though that they are presented as representative in the media. It is not quite like that Slovenia has great business leaders, who for bad climate in the media and business environment sometimes cannot entirely discharge their roles. Communication abilities denote the distinction between successful and unsuccessful companies. One of the most important functions regarding the business leaders is properly communication and therefore their micro communication competence has to be high as it should be their comprehension of macro and mega levels. A successful communication of a business leader which expresses the genuine position of a leader and is trustworthy, increases his repute and influences a higher reputation of a company. A leader - the leading of a company is therefore the one who can first-ratedly represent the company's status at which it is of great significance how he himself is introduced as a personality within various kinds of public. Our wish therefore is to model upon people of the business world, there are great examples among them, as it is for the development in the society and state namely urgently that the Slovene region accepts also the successful ones. 42 Nataša Jenčič, MPharm MERCK SHARP & DOHME, inovativna zdravila d.o.o. Managing Director Ljubiša Mitof Višurski ABBOTT Laboratories d.o.o. Country Manager Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? Nelson Mandela once said, that a good leader is someone, who guides a herd in such a manner, that it doesn't notice being guided. I think, that a good leader is focused on the goal, is self-confident, convincing, dedicated to his job and has good communication abilities. It is very important, that he is evoking trust of employees and that he knows how to react calmly in crisis situations. What is your principal guidance in leading? Goals of organization guide me in the first place. It is not about individual goals or tasks. You need competent people. And my task as a leader is to lead them properly or direct them toward achieving organizations' objectives respectively. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? I am encouraging constant learning, education, progress in sense of personal growth and promotion of job position. I expect from them to be independent, responsible, full of initiative, proactive, creative and of course ethical and honest toward their customers, co-workers and at last but not least to themselves. What do you think are the main motivators? My personal opinion is that the biggest motivation for an employee is when he/she is doing the work he/she enjoys in and that makes sense to him/her. I agree with employees who most often as the main motivators mention good working conditions and good relationships. I think that factors for confirmation of capabilities are of exceptional significance, reputation of the company, possibilities for promotion and education. Nevertheless, it should be admitted honestly that rewarding is also of key significance. Mission / Vision of your company We fulfill our mission through commitment to scientific research work and to discovery of new medicine. We want to ensure to patients the access to the best medications and most modern methods of treatment with intention to prolong lifespan and improve their quality of life. Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? It has never been more important to have the right characteristics of a business leader as it is just now, in modern time, in the period of recession. The most important characteristic of a business leader is that he/she has different views of a picture or situation, as it is displayed to him/her in the proper moment. Key characteristic of a good business leader, that is connected with the future of leading is in his/her ability to create his/her idea, which he/she presents to his/her co-workers, who then carry it through as their own. What is your principal guidance in leading? My principal guidance for leading is»be hard on issues and soft on people«, which is expressed as a demand for uncompromising execution of business tasks, however I try to support friendly atmosphere among employees at the same time, in which interests of all people are represented. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? I am encouraging my associates to be vocal, to express their opinion and understandings, because company draws ideas for organization of work from their ideas. At the same time I also expect this from them, because I believe that someone, who doesn't express his opinion in an existing organization, is condemned to stagnation and dissatisfaction in the field of his work in advance. What do you think are the main motivators? One of the top motivators in my opinion is the possibility of promotion, namely I think that every employee must have his own career development plan, i.e. his position today and where he will be tomorrow. The second motivator would definitely be the right products, which are necessary for employees to passionately work with and represent them as their own, and for the third motivator I would indicate appropriate award for the job done. 40

Anton Petrič, M.Sc. CISCO SYSTEMS, Branch Office General Manager Robert Trnovec S&T SLOVENIJA d.d. Chief Executive Officer Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? Leader has to be versed, must have well developed emotional intelligence, right values, must be principled, be sincere and honest. He/she must enjoy his/her work and should like people. What is your principal guidance in leading? My principal guidance for leading is based on trust. We must give employees the opportunity to prove themselves, to have possibility to participate in decisions also with more important matters and that their achievements are recognized inside organization. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? I mostly encourage the innovativeness and out-of-box thinking among my young associates. We must keep in mind that young people are potential, and a company can with a right attitude gain a lot from them. It is a task of a good leader to encourage talented people on their professional path. I expect proactive, driven and innovative approach from young talents, not an imitation of established practices of older colleagues. What do you think are the main motivators? Rewarding and motivation of employees are key factors of successful companies. It is known, that a satisfied and motivated employee achieves substantively better results. Main motivators in my opinion are challenges, success, prospect of promotion, constant education and personal growth. But we must of course create suitable working conditions and a positive climate in company. Mission / Vision of your company We constantly change the way we work, live, play and learn. Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? Main task of a business leader is to create changes. He/she must set the right guidelines to ensure that these changes would be the right ones. The first step is in setting the vision and strategy for achieving it. The second challenge for every business leader is undoubtedly how to align people with the vision and strategy. How do you motivate and inspire in a way that on the path to the goal they stay motivated even when they encounter obstacles. This is achieved through constant communication and by ensuring that the needs of staff regarding self-esteem, recognition and belonging are met. Because of the ever growing changes in the business environment there is a growing need for more business leaders at all levels of the company. It is one of the key tasks of the business leader that by creating opportunities and with developmental tools such as coaching, continous feedback and example he/she builds a so-called "leadership" culture. What is your principal guidance in leading? I want to help people to try to go beyond their limits. Everyone is capable of much more than he thinks or suggests to be, therefore I try to elicit this great human characteristic from anyone who wants to do new and right things. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? Desire to grab the offered opportunities and the motivation to achieve results even when they encounter obstacles. To overcome new challenges takes a lot of self-study and preparedness to run an additional mile. Everything I encourage, I of course also expect. What do you think are the main motivators? This is without doubt their personal and professional development, which is validated through performance, recognition and fair remuneration. All these bring self-esteem and sense of belonging to an employee. And both of them give wings to motivation as well. MEMBERS SLOVENIA YOUNG PROS EVENTS AMCHAM ECACC AmCham Yearbook 2010/11 41

Matej Potokar MICROSOFT d.o.o. Senior Director Microsoft Business Solutions Central Eastern Europe Janez Škrabec RIKO d.o.o. General Manager Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? The most important is the ability of open and direct communication with all employees on both the successes and challenges, expectations and potential traps in an environment in which the company operates. Business leader is the face of the company, a person which with his/her experience and knowledge best embodies the company and everything that the company on the market and society represents, so with his/her work and approach he/she gives an example for all employees. He/she must also know how to listen to employees and foster culture of mutual trust, which is essential for effective and efficient communication. What is your principal guidance in leading? Good communication is the foundation for a successful business, so it is also the most important characteristic of a good leader. Willingness to listen to employees' questions and challenges is for me essential, therefore I encourage direct communication between management and employees, based primarily on the sensitivity to the needs of all stakeholders and building relationships based on trust. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? We are a service company and employees are our greatest competitive advantage. An enormous amount of attention is always dedicated to good and professional relations, and we are putting a lot of effort into open communication. It is important that employees feel comfortable in their workplace and are creative in any kind of situation. In addition to achieving the goals all the time we encourage their innovation, boldness, initiative and independent decision-making ability. From my colleagues I expect open, frank and good communication, because only with the free flow of information between departments and groups it is possible to coordinate a truly effective support to business objectives of the company. What do you think are the main motivators? The most important factor for motivation of employees is meeting the needs for personal and professional development, because motivated and satisfied employees are key to the success and development of the company. Work gives individuals the chance of social contacts, exertion and recognition, releases creative potential and stimulates personal growth. It is important to create such a working environment that encourages employees to coordinate their objectives with goals and values of the company, where people like to work and carry out their work successfully. On the first place is the relationship between employees and management, which must be built on good communication and trust. Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? I always follow those who know how to identify real opportunities and weave the links in the right way; who are emphatic, who are able to enthuse and thereby also to motivate; who charm with personal authenticity, cosmopolitan breadth and spiritual depth; who cause and justify the trust, who skillfully integrate various knowledge; that are philosophers, pragmatics and strategists at the same time. I think these are the characteristics of a good business leader. What is your principal guidance in leading? To know how to recognize different talents both in individuals and in teams, bring them together in an appropriate manner and direct them not only in the objectives but also in the common mission and vision. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? With young people I appreciate curiosity inquisitiveness, autonomy, initiative, and of course, diligence and ability to work in team. I expect from them to be able to integrate their knowledge and talents in the common objectives and that they are ambitious, but not in terms of achieving objectives at all costs, but for themselves desire to know more, learn more and experience more. What do you think are the main motivators? If I ignore fear and greed, that fatally influence human reactions? I believe and bet on the value and meaning, then the success and recognition. Mission / Vision of your company Implementation of a global project management is a key task of the company Riko d.d. Riko is supplying technological equipment to customers at home and abroad for a wide variety of industries, and manages projects from concept to implementation in the field of industrial engineering, transport and storage systems, energy, ecology and construction. 45 Gregor Pilgram GENERALI ZAVAROVALNICA d.d. Chief Executive Officer Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? Accessible. Ambitious. Faithful. Competent. Reliable. Considerate. Visionary. Able to learn. Sincere. In Generali we would use just one word to describe all of these:»lionhearted«. What is your principal guidance in leading? My personal favorite guidance for leading is the example I namely lead insurance company above all with my own example. Furthermore, I am convinced, that a success can be merely achieved with a lot of effort and daring enough decisions. My co-workers will always find my office door open for them. Otherwise you can find me more often in offices of employees rather than closed in my own office or on formal meetings. So-called»management by walking around«is namely a normal part of working process in our company. Open communication between management and trust of employees in management both show that we are on a right track. My measure of success is satisfaction. Maybe it is the origin of the wish for continuous progress, creation. I think that a successful leader has many challenges behind him, but at least three times more ahead. This means, that you never pause on the same place, but you want more, because you know that you can. And even bigger success with constant work and promotion, which are bringing usually also financial incentives, is to succeed to preserve authentic relationships with people around you with family, colleagues, friends and acquaintances. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? At Generali we encourage correct business relationships, openness to new, different and unusual. We accept the business challenges with genuine enthusiasm and drive. The word "impossible" is practically nonexistent in our vocabulary. And it is this the lack of "impossible" which sets before us new challenges. For those who are creative, this is an incentive, for others it might be a problem. Like me, my colleagues are confident in Generali's success story. Our relationships are genuine, relaxed, but always correct and based on mutual respect. We expect it will remain so. What do you think are the main motivators? All too often we come across of thinking that financial compensation or financial rewards are key motivators which encourage employees to work even better and to be more successful. From my own experience I can say that in most cases this is not true. I believe that an employee can be motivated much more than with cash reward by public recognition of his work, with the possibility that with his knowledge and experience he is able to participate in decision-making, feeling that the company values him, that the company takes into account also his opinion, that he co-creates and contributes to the reputation of the company. In short, that he is important to the company and that he is one of the links in the success of this company. Others may be motivated by new challenges, some find inspiration and enthusiasm in material, but not cash rewards. However, it is important that the company is able to establish such motivators that stimulate its employees towards better work and therefore towards a successful business. Mission / Vision of your company Generali Insurance Company is known to Slovenian public primarily for innovative supply of quality and affordable insurance. In our work we are dedicated to people and guided by the needs of policyholders. To the latter we offer insurances which follow world trends and are also tailored to the needs of the Slovenian market. The testimonies of our success, despite the economic crisis are good results, growing market share and growing number of satisfied customers. We understand that insurance does not cover all the needs of policyholders. Therefore, we offer more than "only" insurance - we offer to our customers a genuine, long-term partnership and cooperation. Part of this partnership is our commitment to social responsibility, which we nurture from the very entry into the Slovenian market. We are active supporters of various cultural, charitable and sports projects, and are dedicated especially to road safety, where we are also the most present with our core business. Our commitment is to act in this direction in the future. Because we want to shape the future, nurture our knowledge and realize our potentials. 46 Anton Horvatič Managing Director DINERS CLUB SLO d.o.o. Saša Pušnik Managing Director DINERS CLUB SLO d.o.o. Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? A good business leader has to be innovative, quick in decisions making and always at hand for a dialogue. Following the world trends, users' needs and incessant development of novelties should represent a permanent necessity to a good business leader. Whoever stagnates in a certain situation, has already lost and therefore retrogades. A good business leader strives for motivating his co-workers in trying to constantly improve the products and to search for new possibilities and also shares the successes with them. What is your principal guidance in leading? My principal guidance in management is openness for dialogue, reconciliation of viewpoints and praises for good work. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? Above all I encourage them to think creatively, to create partnerships and sinergies with business partners and to try to accustom themselves to their users' feelings and thoughts. They have to be a part of a team. They have to know how to listen and to praise as well. What do you think are the main motivators? The main motivators would definitely be an honourable mention in front of the co-workers and money stimulation. Which are the characteristics of a good business leader? A good business leader has to determine the right (and of course real) goals, to which his co-workers and employees will be able to respond, follow and fulfill. Merely determining the goals certainly is not enough. A good business leader also has to have a knowledge and skills for motivating his/her co-workers in successfully reaching the aims set and for functioning as their counsellor when needed. He/she should praise a work when it is well accomplished and to reprimand properly if it proves unsatisfying or under average. A good business leader must be able to reach decisions quickly and deliberately. What is your principal guidance in leading? To try to represent an ideal to the others, to be honest towards your co-workers and to yourself, there should exist an open and clear communicaton within a company. One should listen to any idea, suggestion. Praise the good and chide the bad. What are you encouraging the most among your young associates and what is your biggest expectation from them? I expect from all co-workers not merely the young ones, a diligence and accuracy at work, collegiality and teamwork, creativity and the ability to accustom themselves to as well to listen to our clients. What do you think are the main motivators? One of the main motivators would be in creating a positive atmosphere within a working place (environment). Further on - communication with one's coworkers. The ability to listen to them properly and to remain in a constant contact with them will result in learning the motivators important to each and every individual. For some, this may be a possibility for additional education (the young), flexible working hours (young mothers), payment, praise, promotion at work, 44
