Anaphylaxis management plicy at... MOUNT CLEAR COLLEGE/GPLACE BACKGROUND Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly prgressive allergic reactin that is ptentially life threatening. The mst cmmn allergens in schl aged children are peanuts, eggs, tree nuts (e.g. cashews), cw s milk, fish and shellfish, wheat, sy, sesame, latex, certain insect stings and medicatin. The key t preventin f anaphylaxis in schls is knwledge f thse students wh have been diagnsed at risk, awareness f triggers (allergens), and preventin f expsure t these triggers. Partnerships between schls and parents are imprtant in ensuring that certain fds r items are kept away frm the student while at the schl. Adrenaline given thrugh an EpiPen autinjectr t the muscle f the uter mid-thigh is the mst effective first aid treatment fr anaphylaxis. PURPOSE T prvide, as far as practicable, a safe and supprtive envirnment in which students at risk f anaphylaxis can participate equally in all aspects f the student s schling. T raise awareness abut anaphylaxis and the schl s anaphylaxis management plicy in the schl cmmunity. T engage with parents/carers f students at risk f anaphylaxis in assessing risks, develping risk minimisatin strategies and management strategies fr the student. T ensure that each staff member has adequate knwledge abut allergies, anaphylaxis and the schl s plicy and prcedures in respnding t an anaphylactic reactin. INDIVIDUAL ANAPHYLAXIS MANGEMENT PLANS Nte: A template f an individual anaphylaxis management plan can be fund n Page 18 Anaphylaxis Guidelines fr Victrian Gvernment Schls r the Department s website: The Principal will ensure that an Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan is develped, in cnsultatin with the student s Parents, fr any student wh has been diagnsed by a Medical Practitiner as being at risk f anaphylaxis. The Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan will be in place as sn as practicable after the student enrls, and where pssible befre their first day f schl. The Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan will set ut the fllwing: infrmatin abut the student s medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, including the type f allergy/allergies the student has (based n a written diagnsis frm a Medical Practitiner); strategies t minimise the risk f expsure t knwn and ntified allergens while the student is under the care r supervisin f Schl Staff, fr in-schl and ut-f-schl settings including in the schl yard, at camps and excursins, r at special events cnducted, rganised r attended by the Schl; the name f the persn(s) respnsible fr implementing the strategies; infrmatin n where the student's medicatin will be stred; the student's emergency cntact details; and an ASCIA Actin Plan. Page 1 f 14

Nte: The red and blue ASCIA Actin Plan is the mst cmmn frm f emergency prcedures plan that is prvided by medical practitiners t parents when a child is diagnsed as being at risk f anaphylaxis. An example can be fund n page 20 f the Anaphylaxis Guidelines r dwnladed frm Schl Staff will then implement and mnitr the student s Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan. The student s Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan will be reviewed, in cnsultatin with the student s Parents in all f the fllwing circumstances: annually; if the student's medical cnditin, insfar as it relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, changes; as sn as practicable after the student has an anaphylactic reactin at Schl; and when the student is t participate in an ff-site activity, such as camps and excursins, r at special events cnducted, rganised r attended by the Schl (eg. class parties, elective subjects, cultural days, fetes, incursins). The Schl s Anaphylaxis Management Plicy must state that it is the respnsibility f the Parents t: prvide the ASCIA Actin Plan; infrm the Schl in writing if their child s medical cnditin, insfar as it relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, changes and if relevant, prvide an updated ASCIA Actin Plan; prvide an up t date pht fr the ASCIA Actin Plan when that Plan is prvided t the Schl and when it is reviewed; and prvide the Schl with an Adrenaline Autinjectr that is current and nt expired fr their child. PREVENTION STRATEGIES Nte: Chapter 8 f the Anaphylaxis Guidelines fr Victrian Schls cntains advice abut a range f Preventin Strategies that can be put in place. The Risk Minimisatin and Preventin Strategies that Munt Clear Cllege will put in place fr all relevant in-schl and ut-f-schl settings which include (but are nt limited t) the fllwing: classrm activities (including class rtatins, specialist and elective classes); Be sure the ASCIA Actin Plan is easily accessible even if the Adrenaline Autinjectr is kept in anther lcatin. Liaise with Parents abut fd-related activities ahead f time. All fd technlgy classes are nut free. Liaise with class friends abut allergies and keeping classes allergy free fr specific allergens. between classes and ther breaks; in canteens; students carry their EpiPens with them in their pencil cases at all times Canteen staff have received satisfactry training in fd allergen management and its implicatins n fd-handling practices, including knwledge f the majr fd allergens triggering anaphylaxis, crss-cntaminatin issues specific t fd allergy, label reading, etc. Refer t: 'Safe Fd Handling' in the Schl Plicy and Advisry Guide, available at: andling.aspx Helpful resurces fr fd services: Page 2 f 14

during recess and lunchtimes; befre and after schl If a Schl has a student wh is at risk f anaphylaxis, 100% f Schl Staff n yard duty have been trained in the administratin f the Adrenaline Autinjectr (i.e. EpiPen / Anapen ) t be able t respnd quickly t an anaphylactic reactin if needed. Epipens are carried in the Yard Duty First Aid Bag. Students with anaphylactic respnses t insects are encuraged t stay away frm water r flwering plants. Schl Staff shuld liaise with Parents t encurage students t wear light r dark rather than bright clurs, as well as clsed shes and lng-sleeved garments when utdrs. Gardens are cntinuusly maintained and grass is mwn regularly. Students are infrmed t keep drinks and fd cvered while utdrs. students carry their EpiPens with them in their pencil cases at all times special events including incursins, sprts, cultural days, fetes r class parties, excursins and camps. Back up EpiPens and medical infrmatin and management plan are taken n all excursins If fd is prvided externally infrmatin is given abut allergens. SCHOOL MANAGEMENT AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE Nte: Chapter 9 f the Anaphylaxis Guidelines fr Victrian Schls cntains advice abut prcedures fr Schl management and emergency respnse fr anaphylactic reactins. The Munt Clear Cllege prcedures fr emergency respnse t anaphylactic reactins include the fllwing: a cmplete and up t date list f students identified as having a medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin is kept; details f Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plans and ASCIA Actin Plans and where these can be lcated are cmmunicated t all staff: in a classrm; in the schl yard; in all schl buildings and sites including gymnasiums and halls; n schl excursins; n schl camps; and at special events cnducted, rganised r attended by the schl. Infrmatin abut the strage and accessibility f Adrenaline Autinjectrs is cmmunicated t all staff Cmmunicatin with Schl Staff, students and Parents is t ccur in in accrdance with a cmmunicatins plan ie briefed at least twice per calendar year. ADRENALINE AUTOINJECTORS FOR GENERAL USE The Principal will purchase Adrenaline Autinjectr(s) fr General Use (purchased by the Schl) and as a back up t thse supplied by Parents. The Principal will determine the number f additinal Adrenaline Autinjectr(s) required. In ding s, the Principal will take int accunt the fllwing relevant cnsideratins: the number f students enrlled at the Schl wh have been diagnsed as being at risk f anaphylaxis; the accessibility f Adrenaline Autinjectrs that have been prvided by Parents f students wh have been diagnsed as being at risk f anaphylaxis; Page 3 f 14

the availability and sufficient supply f Adrenaline Autinjectrs fr General Use in specified lcatins at the Schl, including in the schl yard, and at excursins, camps and special events cnducted r rganised by the Schl; and the Adrenaline Autinjectrs fr General Use have a limited life, usually expiring within mnths, and will need t be replaced at the Schl s expense, either at the time f use r expiry, whichever is first. Nte: Adrenaline Autinjectrs fr General Use are available fr purchase at any chemist. N prescriptins are necessary. COMMUNICATION PLAN Nte: Chapter 11 f the Anaphylaxis Guidelines fr Victrian gvernment Schls has advice abut strategies t raise staff and student awareness, wrking with Parents and engaging the brader schl cmmunity. This sectin shuld set ut a Cmmunicatin Plan t prvide infrmatin t all Schl Staff, students and Parents abut anaphylaxis and the Schl's Anaphylaxis Management Plicy. The Cmmunicatin Plan must include strategies fr advising Schl Staff, students and Parents abut hw t respnd t an anaphylactic reactin by a student in varius envirnments including: during nrmal schl activities including in the classrm, in the schl yard, in all schl buildings and sites including gymnasiums and halls; and during ff-site r ut f schl activities, including n excursins, schl camps and at special events cnducted r rganised by the Schl. The Cmmunicatin Plan must include prcedures t infrm vlunteers and casual relief staff f students with a medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin and their rle in respnding t an anaphylactic reactin by a student in their care. It is the respnsibility f the Principal f the Schl t ensure that relevant Schl Staff are: trained; and briefed at least twice per calendar year. STAFF TRAINING The fllwing Schl Staff will be apprpriately trained: - Schl Staff wh cnduct classes that students with a medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin; and - Any further Schl Staff that are determined by the Principal. The identified Schl Staff will undertake the fllwing training: - an Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse in the three years prir; and - participate in a briefing, t ccur twice per calendar year (with the first briefing t be held at the beginning f the schl year) n: the Schl s Anaphylaxis Management Plicy; the causes, symptms and treatment f anaphylaxis; the identities f the students with a medical cnditin that relates t an allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, and where their medicatin is lcated; hw t use an Adrenaline Autinjectr, including hands n practise with a trainer Adrenaline Autinjectr device; the Schl s general first aid and emergency respnse prcedures; and the lcatin f, and access t, Adrenaline Autinjectr that have been prvided by Parents r purchased by the Schl fr general use. The briefing must be cnducted by a member f Schl Staff wh has successfully cmpleted an Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse in the last 12 mnths. Page 4 f 14

In the event that the relevant training and briefing has nt ccurred, the Principal will develp an interim Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan in cnsultatin with the Parents f any affected student with a medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin. Training will be prvided t relevant Schl Staff as sn as practicable after the student enrls, and preferably befre the student s first day at Schl. The Principal will ensure that while the student is under the care r supervisin f the Schl, including excursins, yard duty, camps and special event days, there is a sufficient number f Schl Staff present wh have successfully cmpleted an Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse in the three years prir.
