3 1. Plicy 1.1 Backgrund Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly prgressive allergic reactin that is ptentially life-threatening. Althugh allergic reactins are cmmn in children, severe life threatening allergic reactins are uncmmn and deaths are rare. Hwever, deaths have ccurred and anaphylaxis must therefre be regarded as a medical emergency that requires a rapid respnse. Certain fds and insect stings are the mst cmmn causes f anaphylaxis. Eight fds cause 90% f fd allergic reactins in Australia and can be cmmn causes f anaphylaxis. These are: peanuts tree nuts (e.g. hazelnuts, cashews, almnds) egg cw s milk wheat sybeans fish and shellfish Other cmmn allergens include sme insect s stings, particularly bee stings, sme medicatins, latex and anaesthesia. The symptms f a mild t mderate allergic reactin can include: swelling f the lips, face and eyes hives r welts abdminal pain and/r vmiting The symptms f anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reactin) can include: difficulty breathing r nisy breathing swelling f the tngue swelling/tightness in the thrat difficulty talking and/r a harse vice wheezing r persistent cughing lss f cnsciusness and/r cllapse yung children may appear pale and flppy Symptms usually develp within 10 minutes t ne hur f expsure t an allergen but can appear within a few minutes. The key t preventin f anaphylaxis in schls is knwledge f thse students wh have been diagnsed at risk, awareness f triggers (allergens) and preventin f expsure t these triggers. Staff members, parents/guardians and students need t be made aware that it is nt pssible t achieve a cmpletely allergen-free envirnment at any schl and shuld nt have a false sense f security that an allergen has been eliminated frm the envirnment. Instead the schl recgnises the need t adpt a range f prcedures and risk minimisatin strategies t reduce the risk f a student having an anaphylactic reactin, including strategies t minimise the presence f the allergen at the schl. Adrenaline given as an injectin int the muscle f the uter mid thigh is the mst effective first aid treatment fr anaphylaxis. 4 1.2 Purpse T prvide, as far as practicable, a safe and supprtive envirnment in which students at risk f anaphylaxis can participate equally in all aspects f the student s schling. T raise awareness abut anaphylaxis and the schl s anaphylaxis management plicy in the schl cmmunity. T engage with parents/guardians f students at risk f anaphylaxis in assessing risks, develping risk minimisatin strategies and management strategies fr the student. T ensure that each staff member has adequate knwledge abut allergies, anaphylaxis and the schl s plicy and prcedures in respnding t an anaphylactic reactin. 1.3 Relevant Legislatin Sphia Mundi Steiner Schl has updated it s plicies and prcedures relating t Anaphylaxis Management in rder t fully cmply with Ministerial Order 706 and the assciated Guidelines. These plicies and prcedures will be regularly reviewed and updated t remain cmpliant with Guidelines published and amended by the Department frm time t time. 10 All staff members will be briefed at least twice a year (with the first briefing t be held at the beginning f the schl year) by a staff member wh has up t date anaphylaxis management training n: the schl s anaphylaxis management plicy; the causes, symptms and treatment f anaphylaxis; the identities f students diagnsed at risk f anaphylaxis ; the preventative strategies in place; where Adrenaline Aut-injectins are kept; hw t use an adrenaline aut-injecting device (Adrenaline Aut-injectin), including hands n practice with a trainer Adrenaline Aut-injectin ; the schl s first aid and emergency respnse prcedures; and their rle in respnding t a severe allergic reactin. Nte: Chapter 11 f the Anaphylaxis Guidelines fr Victrian gvernment Schls has advice abut strategies t raise staff and student awareness, wrking with Parents and engaging the brader schl cmmunity. Raising Student Awareness Peer supprt is an imprtant element f supprt fr students at risk f anaphylaxis. Staff members can raise awareness at schl thrugh fact sheets r psters displayed in hallways, canteens and classrms. Class Teachers/Guardians can discuss the tpic with students in class, with a few simple key messages: always take fd allergies seriusly severe allergies are n jke; dn t share yur fd with friends wh have fd allergies; wash yur hands after eating; knw what yu friends are allergic t; if a fellw student becmes sick, get help immediately; be respectful f a fellw student s Adrenaline Aut-injectin ; and dn t pressure yur friends t eat fd that they are allergic t. It is imprtant t be aware that sme students at risk f anaphylaxis may nt want t be singled ut r be seen t be treated differently. Als be aware that bullying f students at risk f anaphylaxis can ccur in the frm f teasing tricking a student int eating a particular fd r threatening a student with the substance that they are allergic t. Talk t the students invlved s that they are aware f the seriusness f an anaphylactic reactin. Any attempt t harm an anaphylactic student with an allergen must be treated as a serius and dangerus incident and handled accrdingly under the schl s Behaviur Management Plicy. Wrk with Parents Parents/guardians f a student wh is at risk f anaphylaxis may experience high levels f anxiety abut sending their child t schl. It is imprtant t develp an pen and c-perative relatinship with parents/guardians s that they can feel cnfident that apprpriate management strategies in place. Aside frm implementing practical preventin strategies in Schls, the anxiety that parens/guardians may feel can be cnsiderably reduced by regular cmmunicatin and increased educatin, awareness and supprt frm the schl cmmunity. Raising Schl Cmmunity Awareness Schls are encuraged t raise awareness abut anaphylaxis in the schl cmmunity s that there is an increased understanding f the cnditin. This can be dne by prviding infrmatin in the schl newsletter. NOTE: Parent Infrmatin Sheets that prmte greater awareness f severe allergies can be dwnladed frm the Ryal Children s Hspital website at: Versin: 4.0 Ratified by the Bard Jun 2015 Anaphylaxis Management Plicy Page 10 f 17

11 3.4 Staff Training and Emergency Respnse Duty f Care Under the prvisins f the Occupatinal Health and Safety Act 2004 and the schl s duty f care bligatins t students, the schl is respnsible fr prviding first aid facilities and sufficient staff members trained t an apprpriate level f cmpetency in first aid. As part f the duty f care wed t students, teachers are required t administer first aid when necessary and within the limits f their skill, expertise and training. In the case f anaphylaxis, this includes fllwing a student s ASCIA Actin Plan and administering an Adrenaline Aut-injectin if necessary. It shuld be nted that a teacher s duty f care is greater than that f the rdinary citizen in that a teacher is bliged t assist an injured student, while the rdinary citizen may chse t d nthing. Staff Training The fllwing Schl Staff will be apprpriately trained: Teachers wh cnduct classes that students with a medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin; and Any further Schl Staff that are determined by the Principal The identified Schl Staff will undertake the fllwing training: An Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse; and Participate in a briefing, t ccur twice per calendar year (with the first briefing t be held at the beginning f the schl year) n: The schl s Anaphylaxis Management Plicy; The causes, symptms and treatment f anaphylaxis; The identities f the students with a medical cnditin that relates t an allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, and where their medicatin is lcated; Hw t use an Adrenaline Aut-injectin, including hands n practise with a trainer Adrenaline Aut-injectin device; The Schl s general first aid and emergency respnse prcedures; The lcatin f, and access t, Adrenaline Aut-injectins that have been prvided by parents r purchased by the Schl fr general use. The briefing will be cnducted by a member f Schl Staff wh has successfully cmpleted an Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse in the last 12 mnths. This persn will be nminated by the Principal prir t the briefing. In the event that the relevant training and briefing has nt ccurred, the Principal will develp an interim Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan in cnsultatin with the Parents f any affected student with a medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin. Training will be prvided t relevant Schl Staff as sn as practicable after the student enrls, and preferably befre the student s first day at Schl. The Principal will ensure that while the student is under the care r supervisin f the Schl, including excursins, yard duty, camps and special event days, there is a sufficient number f Schl Staff present wh have successfully cmpleted an Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse in the three years prir. NOTE: A vide has been develped and can be viewed frm A pwer pint presentatin has been develped and is available n the schl s Mdrive A trainer Adrenaline Aut-injecting device (Adrenaline Aut-injectin ) that can be used at staff briefings are available frm the schl ffice and additinal resurces are available frm the Australasian Sciety f Clinical Immunlgy and Allergy (ASCIA) website ( Versin: 4.0 Ratified by the Bard Jun 2015 Anaphylaxis Management Plicy Page 11 f 17

12 At ther times while the student is under the care r supervisin f the schl, including excursins, yard duty, camps and special event days, the Principal must ensure that there is a sufficient number f staff members present wh have up t date training in an anaphylaxis management training curse. Training will be prvided t the nminated staff members as sn as practicable after the student enrls. Wherever pssible, training will take place befre the student s first day at the schl, where this is nt pssible, an interim plan will be develped in cnsultatin with the parents/guardians. The schl s first aid prcedures and student s emergency prcedures plan (ASCIA Actin Plan) will be fllwed in respnding t an anaphylactic reactin. Guidelines A risk assessment tl is prvided at Appendix C. St Jhn Ambulance prvide an Anaphylaxis Awareness Curse which meets the requirements fr an anaphylaxis management training curse, further infrmatin is available frm their website ( Self-Administratin f the Adrenaline Aut-injecting device The decisin whether a student can carry their wn Adrenaline Aut-injecting device shuld be made when develping the student s individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan, in cnsultatin with the student, the student s parents/guardians and the student s medical practitiner. It is imprtant t nte that students have the right t self-administer if they are able t at the time, but even an 18 year ld may nt physically be able t self-administer due t the effects f a reactin. Staff members still have a duty f care t administer an Adrenaline Aut-injecting device fr students wh carry their wn device. If a student self administers an Adrenaline Aut-injecting device they must immediately reprt t a staff member and 000 must be called. Guidelines If a student carries their wn Adrenaline Aut-injecting device, a secnd Adrenaline Aut-injecting device (prvided by the parent) shuld be kept n site in an easily accessible, unlcked lcatin that is knw t all staff members. 3.5 Annual Risk Management Checklist The Principal will cmplete an annual Risk Management Checklist as published by the Department f Educatin and Early Childhd Develpment t mnitr cmpliance with their bligatins.
