3 UNIT 2 EXCUSE ME, PLEASE! SCUSI, PER FAVORE! UNITÀ 2 PART A: KEY LANGUAGE 2.1 WELCOME TO SIENA! Your teacher, Marco, arrives in Siena by train. He observes the activity at the railway station. Mr Pavoni, a business manager, is welcomed by his company representative, Mrs 14 Bennati. Marco has a coffee, buys a magazine and takes a taxi to his hotel. 15 In this unit you can learn how to: say hello and goodbye, please and thank you; attract people s attention; and, above all, make the most of a small amount of language. There s no magic wand to enable you to speak fluent Italian overnight. Goodwill is important, though.as you listen to Marco in Siena, you ll find that a smile and the word please! will help you get by in a variety of situations. Note also the way Italian people behave when meeting, either with a formal handshake and stating their name, or by embracing each other if they know each other well. 2.2 KEY LANGUAGE Good morning, good afternoon, hello! Excuse me, please. Thank you. 2.1 BENVENUTO A SIENA! 2.2 PAROLE CHIAVE Buongiorno! Scusi, per favore. Grazie. Marco arriva a Siena LEARNING STRATEGIES 19 A cappuccino, please. There you are. The Bellavista Hotel, please The Bellavista Hotel is there. The restaurant, please Excuse me, madam. Thank you, sir. Try to learn the Italian phrases, then cover up the English KEY LANGUAGE on this page. Looking at the page opposite, see how much of the English you can remember, then cover up the Italian phrases and do it in reverse. Remember to work through every section with the book and recording as many times as you need in order to feel comfortable with the language. In unit 1, you learned the sequence: read and listen, then repeat after, and then with, the Italian speakers. Now add another step.when you have repeated after and with the speakers, try to keep the language in your mind while you do something else.then try saying the sentences again, gradually increasing the time gap. In this way, the KEY LANGUAGE will become part of your long-term memory: you will have learned it! So, this strategy can be summed up as: (i) read and listen; (ii) repeat after the speakers; (iii) repeat with the speakers; (iv) repeat without an immediate model. Practise doing this sequence with the key Italian sentences in 2.2 opposite.then test yourself: when you hear the Italian for the following, repeat it: a Excuse me. b A cappuccino, please. c The Bellavista Hotel. d Thank you. Un cappuccino, per favore. Ecco a lei. L Hotel Bellavista, per favore L Hotel Bellavista è lì. Il ristorante, per favore Scusi, signora. 4 UNIT 2 EXCUSE ME, PLEASE! SCUSI, PER FAVORE! UNITÀ OVER TO YOU You now know how to use Italian to do some useful jobs. Look at the photos on the 20 opposite page, and: a say you d like a cappuccino; b ask to be taken to the Bellavista Hotel; c ask for the restaurant. 2.3 TOCCA A LEI Esempio: a Un cappuccino, per favore! 2.4 STRATEGIES It s a good idea to train yourself to listen and to read in a positive way, picking out the words that carry the message, and ignoring what is less important.what message is conveyed in the three examples on the page opposite 2.5 VOCABULARY You ll find it easier to understand people if you anticipate the words you might expect to hear in a particular situation and learn them. In this unit, you will hear Marco in the 21 station buffet, at the newspaper kiosk, taking a taxi, and arriving at the hotel. Look at the list of words below and tick any you expect to hear the Italian for. Learn the Italian for all 22 the words you ticked.then, when you have listened to part B, check how well you anticipated. One good technique is to concentrate on a word and to try to photograph 23 it in your mind.then cover it up and write it down from memory. Do this with all the words, and then with four or five at a time. Use this technique again if you find it useful. 24 (The words in these lists are always given in the order in which you hear them.) STRATEGIE a Mi porti un cappuccino, per favore. b Mi porti all Hotel Bellavista, per favore. c Potrebbe indicarmi dove si trova il ristorante 2.5 VOCABOLARIO a b c 1 Mrs 2 welcome to 3 straight away 4 a brioche (a kind of bun) 5 a mineral water 6 a toasted cheese and ham sandwich 7 the Conference Centre 8 goodbye 9 some Kleenex (tissues) 10 Panorama (a news magazine) 11 a (bed)room 12 number 13 eleven 14 and 15 the telephone 16 is 17 a/one minute 18 can I help you 19 spaghetti 1 signora 2 benvenuto a 3 subito 4 una brioche 5 un acqua minerale 6 un toast 7 (il) Centro Congressi 8 arrivederla 9 dei Kleenex 10 Panorama 11 una camera 12 numero 13 undici 14 e 15 il telefono 16 è 17 un minuto 18 prego 19 spaghetti A useful way of dealing with any words you find difficult to remember is to copy them out with their English meanings on a slip of paper, and carry it about with you. Use any spare moments to revise the words. 2.6 LOOKING AHEAD Similarly, you ll understand people better if you think in advance about what they are likely to say in certain situations. So, when Marco asks for a cappuccino at the station café, he doesn t say I d like you to bring me a cappuccino, please, but simply A cappuccino, please. Note down in English similar phrases you might hear or need to say: a at a newspaper kiosk (e.g. Some Kleenex, please.); b in a hotel; c in a restaurant. 2.6 POSSO PREVEDERE Dei Kleenex, per favore. 10 dieci undici 11
5 UNIT 2 EXCUSE ME, PLEASE! SCUSI, PER FAVORE! UNITÀ 2 PART B: LANGUAGE IN ACTION 2.7 NOW I UNDERSTAND To ask for a cappuccino, to ask where the telephone or the restaurant is, Marco simply 26 says what he wants, and adds please (Un cappuccino, per favore.).as you listen, note down in English ten other instances you hear of the same strategy being used.the photos on the opposite page give you some clues. 2.7 ORA CAPISCO 2.8 GOT IT When you arrive at a station in Italy, you will see signs such as: Treni in arrivo (Arrivals), and FS (Ferrovie dello Stato, the Italian national railway company).you will understand other signs more easily. For example, say which Italian sign in the righthand column below matches each English sign in the left-hand column: 1 Exit a Hotel Bellavista 2 Coffee Bar/Tobacconist b Foto Tessera 3 Welcome to Siena c Ristorante 4 Italian State Railways Siena d Ferrovie Italiane FS Siena 5 Passport (type) Photos e Bar Tabacchi 6 Bellavista Hotel f Reception 7 Reception g Uscita 8 Telephone h Telefono 9 Restaurant i Benvenuti a Siena 2.9 HERE S THE ENGLISH EQUIVALENT OF THE TRANSCRIPT WHICH APPEARS ON THE PAGE OPPOSITE. 2.8 HA CAPITO 2.9 TRASCRIZIONE THE STATION Franco Mrs Bennati Marisa Yes, my name s Marisa Bennati. 6 UNIT 2 EXCUSE ME, PLEASE! SCUSI, PER FAVORE! UNITÀ PRACTISE Now cover up the English transcript and, as you read the Italian version, try and remember the English. Then check GRAMMAR A noun is a word used to name a person, a place or a thing. In Italian, some nouns are 29 masculine and some feminine. On the page opposite, masculine nouns are on the left and feminine nouns on the right.the word for the with a masculine noun is il (e.g. il telefono) and with a feminine noun it is la (e.g. la camera). If a noun starts with a vowel or an h (not pronounced in Italian), then both il and la become l (e.g. l hotel, l acqua).with most nouns, there is no real way of telling whether they are masculine or feminine: it s best to learn il or la with each noun you meet.the word for a is un with a masculine noun (e.g. un cappuccino) and una with a feminine noun (e.g. una brioche). Una becomes un if the feminine noun starts with a vowel (e.g. un acqua minerale). Look again at the list on the opposite page. How would you ask for: a) a cappuccino b) the Bellavista Hotel c) the room d) a brioche 2.10 PER ESERCITARSI 2.11 GRAMMATICA il cappuccino la camera a un cappuccino una camera b il telefono la brioche un telefono una brioche c l hotel l acqua minerale un hotel un acqua minerale d 2.12 LISTEN AGAIN Each time you hear someone say..., per favore!, repeat the whole sentence two or 30 three times in the pause that follows. PART C:TEST YOURSELF Practise using what you ve learned. Play the recording through once or twice until you re comfortable with the language.then play it again, and repeat what you hear.after this, practise ordering a cappuccino, taking a taxi to the Bellavista Hotel, and finding the restaurant In the dialogue on the opposite page, you see how you can develop the bare formula..., per favore! into a more lengthy exchange, simply by adding other phrases from the vocabulary of this unit. Make up a similar dialogue in a café. Start by attracting the attention of the waiter, then ask for a toasted cheese and ham sandwich and a mineral water. Look at the solution.your dialogue may not be identical, but it could still be correct. PART D:THE END OF THE STORY 2.14 THIS IS THE ENGLISH VERSION OF THE TRANSCRIPT ON THE PAGE OPPOSITE. 32 Marco orders lunch in the hotel restaurant.to show how easy this can be, he chooses something from the menu which you would have no problem understanding, if you saw it in Italian on a menu.
