3 HAMPTON, LENZINI, AND RENWICK, INC. City of Geneva Eagle Brook Wetland 2017 Monitoring Report 2017 MONITORING REPORT INTRODUCTION On behalf of the City of Geneva, Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. (HLR) completed wetland management and monitoring for the ±72 acre wetland located in the Eagle Brook Development. The development complex consists of single family homes, open space, wetlands, detention ponds and the Eagle Brook Golf Course. Appendix A includes Figure 1 which is an overview of the site and details the locations where maintenance activities were focused. A photograph log is included as Appendix B. A vegetative analysis is summarized in this report. Full floristic quality inventory data for each area is included in Appendix C. MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT GOALS AND ACTIVITIES Our goals for the 2017 growing season for the Eagle Brook wetland complex were to reduce invasive wetland species and to remove some of the weedy woody species throughout the site. Our focus has been on the highly visible areas around the north and west stream corridors, as well as the southern and eastern wetland areas. The northern stream corridor, originally dominated by sandbar willow, crown vetch, and thistle has been chemically and mechanically treated several times to reduce these stands of invasive species. We have seen an 80% reduction in invasive species since treating this area. Continued maintenance to address lingering populations of carrot, teasel, sweet clover and hemlock is recommended. Reed canary grass along the shoreline also should be kept in check. The western stream corridor is burdened with landscape refuse dumping, which is introducing more invasive species to this area. The area has been treated for a variety of invasive species, through chemical application and mechanical cutting of non-perennial and woody species. Despite the dumping, this area is in overall good condition. Continued maintenance is recommended to address lingering populations of thistle, carrot, evening primrose, and reed canary grass. The southern wetland areas have seen great improvements from previous seasons. Aggressive common reed, cattail, and purple loosestrife populations have been reduced. Additional native plugs have been installed within these areas to increase biodiversity and native quality. These areas are dominated by desirable native species including prairie cordgrass, nodding bur-marigold, obedient plant, Riddell s goldenrod and Dudley s rush. The interior of the wetland complex has been treated for common reed and cattail through the use of chemical application. Aggressive populations have been reduced and pushed further into the interior of the wetland, away from resident yards. As mentioned in previous monitoring reports, the goal is not to eradicate but to limit the coverage of cattail, primarily from the outside edges in. The tree line behind the residents of Fairway Circle was cut down in April of 2017 and more clearing was done in April of The area was overseeded in early May (2017) with a custom prairie seed mix. Throughout the season the area was treated numerous times to reduce abundant burdock, thistle, garlic mustard, stinging nettle, and lamb s quarters. This area has been challenging to address in previous years due to shaded conditions, however the clearing of the weedy woody species will help eliminate the shady tolerant forbs within this area. Frequent and continual treatments to this area and overseeding, are
4 Eagle Brook Development 2017 Wetland Monitoring Report May 2018 Page 2 of 5 necessary to continue to reduce what seed lie dormant within the soils and introduce competitive native species. Tree removal along Kings Court was also performed. The removal focusing on weedy species including mulberry (Morus spp.), boxelder (Acer negundo), buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), and cottonwood (Populus deltoids). This will open up areas allowing us to widen the native buffer and give residents a better view of the wetland. Many of the cottonwoods along Kings Court were dead and leaning towards residential properties. The removal of these trees helps ensure resident safety. Flooding at Eagle Brook has been a consistent concern among residents with yards backing up to the wetland system. Maintaining the natural drainage of the wetland is one of our main directives from the City for site management. Constant beaver and muskrat activity makes this a difficult task. The frequency of high water levels has been attributed to a persistent beaver population, which has been constructing dams throughout the stream corridor. Several beavers and dams have been removed from the site and streams are monitored during each site visit for additional damming activity. Throughout the maintenance season live plants were installed at various locations within the site; a custom seed mix was also installed throughout the site. The seed and live plant lists are included in the tables below. Both mixes contained species that would allow for diversity in relation to, bloom time, color, height and what they attract. For example cardinal flower, is a herbaceous plant (forb), that can grow from tall, it has a red showy flower that blooms from late summer to early fall, and it attracts humming bird species and swallowtail butterflies. Purple prairie clover is a forb that grows 1-3 tall, the blooms are purple, as its name suggests, and can be seen early to mid-summer. The flower attracts honeybees, bumblebees, small butterflies and various herbaceous mammals. Side oats grama is a grass that grows up to 2.5 tall, it s linear and unbranched, the flowers are orange to brownish red and can be seen mid-summer to early fall. It attracts leafhoppers, grasshoppers, game birds and songbirds. Spotted Joe-pye weed is forb that can grow up to 5 tall, the flowers are pink to purplish pink and blooms mid- to late summer. This flower attracts honeybees, butterflies, moths, and swamp sparrows. We were able to expand the diverse native buffer around the wetland and plan to increase its width in the following years. The tree removal adjacent to Fairway Circle and Kings Court was a huge step towards this goal. Allowing more areas to be converted to prairie and wetland habitat. Much of the common reed, purple loosestrife and cattail was chemically treated, cattail buffers were widened, and areas were planted with native plugs to increase species diversity. WILDLIFE During the management activities this season, HLR personnel observed a variety of fauna utilizing the wetland mitigation area and naturalized areas. Migratory birds and waterfowl species were observed including sandhill cranes, great blue heron, green heron, American coot, great egret, red-winged blackbirds, American robins, northern cardinals, black capped chickadees, mallard ducks, and barn swallows in and around the open water. The sandhill cranes were especially present this year as they migrated north for summer. Some residence saw juveniles within the wetland this season. Mammals noted during inspections included white tailed deer, muskrats, coyote, beaver, and Eastern cottontail rabbit. Spring peepers, northern leopard frogs and bullfrogs were prevalent throughout inundated areas. Many species of dragonfly, butterfly and moth were also observed. Beaver activity was present throughout the site, including the concrete weir between Fabyan Parkway and Wild Dunes Court. Several beaver dens were noted throughout the wetland complex. HLR understands that the golf club has a standing contract with a trapper to remove muskrat and beaver from the site and we strongly recommend continuing with those services. VEGETATION MONITORING A qualitative assessment of the vegetation in the wetland was conducted throughout the 2017 growing season. Using the meander search method, HLR recorded the species composition in each area. To measure the success of maintenance activities a Floristic Quality Index (FQI) has been determined along four specified areas within the site, as shown on Figure 1. An FQI value is an index that rates the quality of an area based on the composition of its plant community. To obtain an FQI of an area, all plant species need to be identified during the growing season. The FQI is updated on a yearly basis. The goal
6 Eagle Brook Development 2017 Wetland Monitoring Report May 2018 Page 4 of 5 is to maintain or increase the FQI at each site. An increase in the FQI shows an increase of the native quality of an area. FQI values of 0 to 5.0 are considered severely degraded, 5.1 to 9.9 as degraded, 10 to 19.9 are considered to have some native character, and those with values greater than 20 are considered to have natural characteristics and considered to be high quality. The vegetation data observed during the meander searches is used to establish a baseline of current ecosystem health for comparison to determine management success in the future. All areas monitored are showing signs of native character or are considered high quality. It is likely that the floristic quality has neared its optimum level based on the site conditions. With continued management, the existing vegetative quality will remain high although minor fluctuations in the current level are anticipated on a yearly basis Management Goals Future goals include continuing to reduce total coverage of invasives and prevent their return as well as creating an ecosystem of native plants that can compete in the habitat with minimal assistance. This will especially be important in the newly cleared areas. We have been successful in removing invasive species and installing aggressive native species that can compete with the invasives. We will continue targeting high-profile invasive species areas spread throughout the site so all stakeholders can benefit from management activities. Prescribed burns or wetland mows will be completed annually to prevent biomass buildup, prevent drainage issues, and minimize the risk for a wildfire. The berm behind Fairways Court should be mowed each winter to prevent woody sapling recurrence. HLR will continue to expand native buffers and burn lines around the perimeter of the site, as well as add new areas to the scope of management. The new areas will include the tree clearing area adjacent to Fairway Circle and Hole 17. We will continue to focus on the west channel by Starbucks because of its high visibility to the public and will continue to increase the floristic quality index of the designated areas in each year of management. A section of common reed should be aggressively controlled with herbicide. Vegetation dumping is a continual issue in various areas throughout the site. Stakeholders should continue to be notified and held accountable for cleanup. Vegetation dumping spreads weed seeds, chokes out high quality natives and takes extensive resources to remedy. A combination of maintenance techniques should be utilized on the site. The most effective treatment will be implemented based on ecological and economic factors. A combination of mechanical removal, herbiciding, and wetland mowing will enhance the native ecosystem and wetland vegetation quality. Stakeholder notifications and education should continue via the Eagle Brook Life publication.
