2 Crop Update Apples & Pears Granny Smith and Golden delicious crops are limited with supplies being down 25% compared to last year. Look for the markets to continue trending higher and will do so for the remainder of the season. Quality remains excellent. Pear supplies are plentiful, with good sugar levels and exceptional quality. Asparagus Supplies continue out of Southern Baja. With cooler night in the growing region production is expected to decline. Markets are steady and overall quality is good. Broccoli & Cauliflower Alert! We are in an EXTREME DEMAND EXCEED SUPPLY SITUATION on Cauliflower and Broccoli. The recent week s cold weather has resulted in the product going dormant and has stalled the growth process with some suppliers pushing off harvest in Yuma until next week. This supply gap in Yuma looks to go through at least next week given Yuma s cold temperature continuing the next 10 days. Until Yuma s weather improves, you may need to direct your trucks to Salinas or Santa Maria. Salinas and Santa Maria s supplies are limited as well with maybe up to pallet. This situation is being felt across the industry. Suppliers are not taking on any open market business and are doing their best to cover contracts. We will keep you posted as we get through this supply gap. Avocados Berries Alert! Supplies are steady from Mexico, however there is still a lack of ripened fruit. Majority of shippers are currently replenishing ripening facilities. Once the pipeline fills with steady daily inbounds and US shippers can get back on track with normal rotation markets should come off. Blackberries Quality and supplies have been exceptional, but the upcoming rain in Mexico is expected to tighten up the supply pipeline. Raspberries Production is expected to slow down this week, due to the rain in Mexico. Strawberry Supplies will continue to diminish going into the weekend and front part of next week. With California and Mexico expected to get hit with heavy rains, most suppliers will not be harvesting Wednesday and Thursday. The rain may also cause the Santa Maria growing region to come to an early end, leaving Oxnard and Mexico to fill the supply chain. The next two weeks could be very challenging with shortages in supplies and less than favorable quality. Blueberry The rain in Mexico is expected to cause a slight disruption in supplies, which could cause markets to jump in price. Coli 0157:H7; the market on substitute greens have spiked as shippers do not have the product to supply the nation. As a result these markets are all DEMAND EXCEED. Iceberg Lettuce: DEMAND EXCEED. Yuma is in production with lighter weights due to puffiness of the plant. The product is not as strong in quality compared to the last few weeks. Quality is fair to poor. Prices have spiked. Leaf Lettuce: Green leaf and red leaf are extremely tight as shippers struggle to come up with alternatives to Romaine. Quality is good but prices are very elevated as we are in a demand exceed situation. Look for this to continue until the all clear is given on Romaine. Green Onions Alert! Market is extremely tight due to weather in Mexico and labor issues. Recent heat followed with rain has been causing some occasional browning streaks and some mechanical damage. Melons Domestic melons are finished for the season. Mexico has limited supplies on all sizes of Cantaloupes. Look for pricing to remain high for the next few weeks. Onions Quality continues to be outstanding with plenty of supplies on all colors and sizes. Tomatoes Alert! AOG EVENT - DEMAND EXCEEDS SUPPLIES. Supplies have been hit with a perfect storm of rain, virus and unusual cold weather to produce dramatically low yields on Mexican tomatoes crossing into the US. California has finished on gas greens. Supplies are short on all sizes. Quality is variable within different lots. Supplies on romas are also Demand Exceed as a freeze has curtained harvest in Eastern Mexico. Supplies are still coming out of Baja but are very short. Look for market extremes as we progress into the coming weeks. Grapes and cherry supplies are also very limited with better supply on cherries. Quality Is fair to good.
