5 Tree Descriptions Balsam Fir Soft, waxy, aromatic, likes sun and cool moist well drained soils, paper and lumber, a favorite Christmas tree. Black Spruce SEEDLINGS & TRANSPLANTS Also called swamp spruce, moist, cool sites, used by wildlife for shelter and small animal food. Blue Spruce Slow to moderate grower in fertile loams and clays, windbreaks, wildlife and a very popular Christmas tree, blue color varies with nurseries. Douglas Fir Grows well on most upland soils except those with high lime content in top soil. Hemlock One of the more shade-tolerant evergreens, it can be sheared as a hedge, or planted for screening. Native to the eastern U.S. resembles Christmas trees. Norway Spruce Fast grower, does well on well to poorly drained soils, clay and loamy sands, identified by its drooping branches and large cones. windbreaks, timber, pulpwood and wildlife. Red Cedar Dense, somewhat prickly blue-green foliage that turns deep purple by late fall. Grows on most soil types except swamp in height. Red Pine Moderate to fast grower, prefers well drained soil, sand, loam, gravel. Windbreaks, timber, pulpwood and wildlife. Much better choice than Austrian Pine. Tamarack -Though the tamarack tree resembles other evergreens, it is actually a deciduous conifer, meaning that it sheds its needles every fall. It commonly grows in swamps and sphagnum bogs but also grows in upland soils. White Cedar Prefers cold, wet sites with slow drainage, but not stagnant water, wider variety of wood uses. The most important winter food of Michigan s whitetail deer herd. White Pine Our State Tree! Slow grower at first but once established grows faster, moist sandy loam, but will grow from swamps and sand, timber, windbreaks, pulpwood and wildlife. White Spruce Slow to moderate grower in fertile loams and clays, faster when established. Lumber, pulpwood, Christmas trees, wildlife. Deer are not overly fond of these. Arenac Conservation District always recommends Michigan Native trees and shrubs for best survivability and diverse species to ensure a healthy stand. Black Walnut Moderately fast growth in moist sandy loam and silt, intolerant of shade likes open space, not a lawn tree and needs to be planted a distance away from other trees. Nuts are edible for wildlife. The most valuable hardwood in Michigan. Mountain Ash Grows best in rich moist soils, reach only about feet in height with slender trunks, put on a showy floral display in late spring and early summer, flash their bright orange berries in the fall, bird food source, this is not a true ash and is not affected by Emerald Ash Borer. Red Bud A landscape tree with magenta pink flowers causes heads to turn and smiles to form, a favorite of horticulturists because of its ease of planting, rapid growth, pleasing form and ability to flower when only four to five years old. Red Maple Fast grower in a variety of soils, nice shade tree with beautiful red fall foliage. Red Oak Moderately fast growing in well drained, rich, moist loam soils, transplants easily, lumber and wildlife. Silver Maple Rapid grower in well drained moist soils, graceful foliage, used for lumber, birds, small mammal food source. Sugar Maple Slow grower in moist to poorly drained fertile soils, hardwood lumber and pulpwood, used for maple sugar. White Birch DECIDUOUS Black Cherry Grows best in deep, moist soil but, will grow in sandy soils. Wood is hard and strong, useful in furniture making, cherries are sweet and an important food source wildlife, deer mice, chipmunks and squirrels like to eat the pits and store for winter use. Hazelnut Also known as Filbert, deep fertile well drained soils, do not tolerate wet feet, will produce a crop in 3 to 4 years, excellent turkey food source. Big Tooth Aspen -Rapid growth and is able to adapt to a wide range of soils, will grow on sands, loamy sands and light sandy loams. Grows to ft. Swamp White Oak- Swamp white oak is a striking tree. The lustrous leaves have a twotone appearance, dark green on top with a silvery-white underside. Fall color is an orange-gold to yellow in mid-autumn. An excellent shade tree for any landscape. Rapid grower in well drained sand, loam, used for reforestation, in yards and by wildlife. White Oak Slow grower in all but the wettest soils, food source for grouse, small mammals & whitetail.

6 Butterfly Bush Full sun to partial shade, slender arching branches, with stalks of fragrant color in lavender, white or magenta, mid-summer to frost. Chokecherry Moderately well drained sites, white blossoms, red fruit, eaten by wildlife. Dogwood, Flowering Dry to moist soils, beautiful white spring flowers, red fruit, birds and small mammals. Dogwood, Gray Well adapted to wet, dry or low fertility soils, white flowers, white berries, maroon colored fall foliage, wildlife. Dogwood, Red Osier Prefers moist soils, especially along streams, useful for erosion control, white flowers, small white fruit, red branches in winter. Whitetail Dogwood, Silky Moist soils, white flowers, blue fruit, useful for erosion control, birds and small mammals. Elderberry Rich moist soil in sunny location, white flowers, purplish-black fruit, Wildlife and wine making. Forsythia Best in full sun, golden yellow flowers in spring, used in borders and landscaping. High Bush Cranberry Tolerates poor soils, prefers cool, moist site, small white to pink flowers, fruit is translucent red berry. Species good for wildlife. Lilac-Purple colored fragrant flowers in May. Nannyberry Moist to well-drained soils, white flowers, blue-black fall fruit, called wild raisin, birds and other wildlife. Ninebark Moist soil, large clusters of white flowers, red fruit, wildlife. Rose of Sharon- Full sun to light shade, very showy large flowers. Serviceberry SHRUBS Well drained variety of soils, edible blue-black fruit, eaten by birds. Winterberry Also known as Michigan Holly, found in moist soils and occasionally drier soils, easy to grow, small white flowers, but look out when it comes to fall its slender branches are covered with small red berries that remain into winter giving color to the landscape, wildlife. Witch Hazel Bright yellow cluster blooms produce a woody brown nut capsule that when mature, explodes with a snapping pop, medicinal uses and whitetail.. GARDEN PLANTS Asparagus-Mary Washington-Heritage. Open pollinated variety. Medium to large purplish-tinged, tightly-budded spears. Grows well, one of the older, tried and true Varieties. Blueberry-Blue Crop/Blue Ray one of each plant. Early to Mid Season crop. It has a long harvest period. This fruit is large with good flavor. Excellent color and a firm fruit. Blueberries need a well-drained soil, with a ph balance between 4.5 and 5.5. Grapes, Concord Vigorous and hardy, ideal for jelly and juice. Grapes, Niagara Popular white grape, excellent flavor, table use and wines. Tips: Plant in early spring. place plants 2 ft. apart. Make sure the top roots 2 to 3 below ground line. Pack soil firmly around plant and water immediately plants can reach a height of 3-4 Raspberries-Heritage. Harvest starts in early fall and will last until extremely cold weather. Soil tips: Raspberries prefer a soil ph of 5.6 to 6.2; if your soil is acidic, you can use ground limestone to increase the ph. Before planting, fertilize with garden fertilizer or compost. Strawberries Seascape-A day neutral type of strawberry variety. It is noteworthy for high flavor, high yield, large fruit size, firmness, symmetry, attractive appearance and flexibility in planting requirements Flower Descriptions Allium Blue Eddy -From late summer into early fall, 1.5" rounded clusters of light lilac pink flowers stand atop leafless stems like lollipops. Be sure to plant them where they won't be hidden under larger plants. Echinacea Hot Papaya -From mid through late summer, highly fragrant, 3 inch, spicy red-orange flowers bloom with a papaya orange halo in the pom-pom center. The glowing orange flowers have terrific visual impact from quite a distance, especially when planted in groups. Be sure to cut a few for a fresh bouquet that will last nearly two weeks. Gaillardia Arizona Apricot -Acting as a perfect complement to its kin, Arizona Sun and Arizona Red Shades, this new selection offers a slightly more subdued color palette of yellows and apricots. Heucherella Eye Spy -bubblegum pink flowers appear in spring and bloom for many weeks. Hibicus Airbrush Effect - love the sun and need moist well drained soil. Vigorous growth rate.vibrant pink flowers with salmon tones have an airbrushed central white halo and a small dark red eye. Hosta Humpback Whale - Humpback Whale forms a massive, domeshaped mound of blue-green, corrugated, heart-shaped leaves. Its color is bluest in the springtime. Blue-green scapes carry near-white, bell-shaped flowers in early summer. Kniphofia Flashpoint Chartreuse yellow buds mature to creamy white as the flowers open. The last member of the collection to bloom. Phlox Fashionably Crystal -In addition to being early blooming, it boasts a long season of color. Pure white flowers with a faint light purple eye appear from early summer well into midsummer with some rebloom in fall. Salvia Perfect Profusion -This Salvia nemorosa hybrid reblooms multiple times throughout the summer if the spent flower stems are cut backone of the very best for consistent rebloom. Soft icy blue flowers cover the perfectly rounded plant Veronica Blue Skywalker -Lavender blue flower spikes cover the top half of an incredibly upright habit of dark green leaves. Although it s taller than you d expect from a Veronica, this plant still features a full, dense habit. Veronica Perfectly Picasso -If you want stop-in-your-tracks beauty, look no further than Perfectly Picasso. Paintbrush-like spikes produce white buds that open to medium pink flowers.

7 Fruit Tree Descriptions Arkansas Black-A very late maturing Winesap-type variety grown primarily in the Southeast. The fruit is dark red and very firm with a tart flavor. This is a great variety to add in a cider blend, providing a high acid, spicy flavor. Ripens November, EMLA111 rootstock, semi dwarf tall Enterprise Apple-Firm and crisp, with a spicy aroma & mild tartness. Extremely disease-resistant to apple scab, cedar rust & fire blight; moderate resistance to powdery mildew. Keeps 5-6 months if refrigerated. Cold hardy. Ripens in mid October. EMLA111 rootstock, semi dwarf Granny Smith- This green apple import from Australia has become an American standard. Consumers like it for its tart, crisp and juicy flavor and outstanding keeping qualities. Is used for both fresh packs and processing and produces large, round fruit. The tree is vigorous and sets crops early. Ripens in November. EMLA 111 rootstock, semi dwarf Honey Crisp Apple semi dwarf ft. tall Sweet as honey. Crisp, cream-colored flesh is mild, sweet and aromatic, ripens in early September. Root stock EMLA 111 Jonaprince-has the large size and excellent flavor, better storage and flavor keeping qualities when compared to other Red Jonagold sports. Ripens mid October. Rootstock EMLA 111semi dwarf Liberty Apple-A variety tolerant to many diseases. Liberty produces a medium-size apple, sporting brilliant red color over yellow. The flesh is pale yellow and juicy. Ripens September. EMLA 7 rootstock, semi dwarf Manchurian Crab Apple white blooms A flowering crab used to pollinate other apple varieties. The white flower is a very prolific pollen producer. Blooms early and through midseason. Fruit is too small for commercial purposes. Rootstock Bud 118. semi dwarf Indian Summer Crab Apple A pink flowering crab apple pollinizer for the early-season bloom. Indian Summer produces abundant pink flowers with viable pollen over an extended period. Rootstock EMLA 111,semi dwarf Red McIntosh-This is the Summerland Red McIntosh. The fruit colors early with a deep red hue. A hardy and productive tree, it is sometimes used as a hardy understock for other apple varieties.. Ripens Late September. Rootstock EMLA7,semi dwarf Yellow Transparent An early yellow apple ripening the first week in July. The fruit is tender, juicy and mildly acidic, making it a favorite for homemade applesauce. Trees are upright, vigorous and very precocious, but tend to be biennial. Ripens in July. Rootstock EMLA 7. semi dwarf Montmorency Cherry The principal commercial tart cherry grown for processing. Montmorency is bright red on the outside and has clear, yellow flesh inside. The tree is early bearing in July, productive and self-fertile. Tart cherry. Rootstock MAHALEB. Semi dwarf Lapins Cherry-A large mahogany-red cherry that is self-fertile. It ripens in July. This new variety is very popular in British Columbia where it originated. Excellent pollinator. Rootstock Mazzard. Standard Hedelfingen-Glossy, black sweet cherry of good quality. Good processor. Hardy and consistent cropper. Fruit resists cracking. Grower friendly tree structure with wide-angle crotches. A favorite selection for Eastern and Midwest growers. Ripens late July. RootStock Mazzard. Standard. 20 Bartlett Pear-The leading commercial pear for both canning and fresh fruit sale. The fruit normally is of large size, has a smooth and attractive appearance. Its flesh is tender and juicy, buttery and of high dessert quality. Bears young and tree has a tendency for compact, upright growth which lends itself to dense plantings. Also excellent for home use. Ripens in August. Rootstock OHXF87. semi dwarf. D' Anjou pear-fruit firm, juicy and with a superbly rich flavor. Best flavor when stored for one or two months. Ripens in August, Excellent keeper. Rootstock OHXF87. semi dwarf Red Haven Peach-Tree is vigorous, very bud-hardy and productive. Fruit is medium-sized and colors to a brilliant red. One of the best commercial varieties. Ripens around August. Rootstock seed. Standard 20 Sugar May Peach-Sweetest peach of its season: mid-june, about one month before Babcock. Very juicy and sweet with fine flavor. High fruit tasting scores. Excellent choice for early season peach. Medium to large size, attractive red skin. Rootstock Lovell White Lady is one of the best tasting white-fleshed freestones with low acid and a full, rich flavor. It is widely adapted, tolerating fluctuating spring weather conditions. White Lady presents well with large size and high skin color. Very good storage and shipping qualities. Rootstock seed. Standard 20 Goldcot Apricot -An open-pollinated seedling of Perfection. The fruit is medium-size, nearly round. The color of the skin, which is moderately tough and thick, is golden. The flesh of Goldcot is firm and medium-orange in color. Variety is somewhat self-fruitful. Rootstock seed. Standard 20 Italian prune- An excellent commercial variety, this prune plum ripens 10 days to two weeks ahead of regular Italian in September.
