3 FRUITS Fun Fact: The English word pomegranate comes from the Latin words for apple ( pomum ) (apple) and seeded ( granatus ). Pomegranates are still the most popular fruit today in the region of its origin, which includes Persia (Iran), southern parts of the the former Soviet Union, India and across Afghanistan to the Himalayas. APPLES Among apples available are Red & Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Ambrosia, Cameo, Jazz, Braeburns, Pink Lady, and Jonagold. AVOCADOS The Super Bowl pull is ramping up this month causing a large increase in demand. Product is mainly from Mexico. BERRIES Strawberries/StemBerries Demand exceeds supply on the west coast as Santa Maria has now ended major production for the current crop and Oxnard continues to be challenged with colder than normal temperatures. Central Mexico has limited supplies. Stem Berries are limited. Raspberries The raspberry crop continues to decline in production volume out of the Oxnard, California growing district as central Mexico is still ramping up production. Blueberries Chile and Peru are shipping more blueberries as other areas of South America are declining toward the end of their seasonal production. Mexico is still shipping good volumes as well. Blackberries The CA blackberry crop continues to decline in volume and should end major production in the next week or so. Mexico has been ramping up production but we are now seeing availability tighten some over recent weeks and markets are coming up as well. Gooseberries Available year-round with some gaps. Currently it is coming from Columbia. Red Currants Chile is done for the season. STONE FRUIT Chilean Stone Fruit is slowly coming in this month. CITRUS Lemon The Desert crop is 70% harvested and looks to finish ahead of schedule. The small Central Valley crop is 30% harvested. Expect tight supplies on smaller fruit to continue through January and maybe longer. Lime supplies are steady out of Mexico. Key Limes from Mexico, Kaffir Limes from CA. Meyer Lemons, Satsuma Mandarins, Satsuma Stem & Leaf, Clementines, Buddha s Hand, and Kumquats all available. Texas Grapefruit, CA Pummelo, CA Blood Oranges, and CA Cara Caras are available. 4 Vegetables Fun Fact: Fennel refers to the seeds, the celery-like stalks and the leaves of the herb plant. The plants were found growing wild in the central Mediterranean region. As with most of the modern-day herbs, they were introduced to most of the temperate growing zones over time. ARTICHOKES are primarily harvested in Oxnard from October through January with some gapping. Sizing is limited to start off the month. ARUGULA Fall/Winter is peak Arugula season, but field transitions cause gapping. ASPARAGUS Both the Peruvian and Mexican supplies of asparagus remain extremely limited due to cold temperatures in both growing regions. BEANS Green Beans, French (Haricot Verts), and Yellow Wax Beans are all available. Ask about our Trimmed Haricot Verts...A holiday time saver! SEA BEANS, aka Sea Asparagus, available year-round. BEETS Love Cold Weather! BELL PEPPERS California has finished its season. Mexico production has been limited, but has been improving. Baby Mixed Bells available as well from Mexico. BROCCOLI Despite another holiday shortened pull this week the labor and weather issues will carry well into the first week of the new year. Consequently, we expect to see this market continue to be demand exceeds supply for the next several weeks. BROCCOLI RABE (RAPINI) has limited supplies to start the month. BROCCOLINI, aka, ASPIRATION in short supplies also. BRUSSELS SPROUTS Regular and Baby-sized available. FRESH HERBS Basil, Sage, Sorrel, Marjoram, Dill, Cilantro, Mint, Rosemary, Thyme & more. CAULIFLOWER The Market is demand exceeds supply with no let up in sight. Supplies continue to be too short to meet even the light demand brought on by the historic prices of recent weeks. With only light plantings and much lower than normal temperatures in the desert, this market looks to continue its record setting pace. CAULIFLOWER ROMANESCO Large & Baby available w/ some gaps. CELERY ROOT, aka CELERIC CA-grown. Great for winter meals. CHARD Green, Red, Yellow and Rainbow CA-grown CUCUMBERS Crossings through Nogales are still limited due to cold weather. 5 Mushrooms & Truffles Mother Nature is in charge here.and the only constant in life and produce is change.all mushroom pricing and info is subject to change at any given moment Fresh, Wild Mushrooms Chanterelles, USA Black Trumpet, USA Many of us love cheese. And although it s often a main ingredient in not-so healthy dishes, when eaten in moderation and paired with healthy foods, cheese can play a beneficial role in your diet. Hedgehogs, USA Maitake, USA King Trumpet, IMP Cheese is a great source of nutrients including calcium, phosphorous and B vitamins. Eating dairy products can also contribute to fighting certain chronic diseases such as osteoporosis. Below are some cheeses that are good options when you are trying to stick to a healthy diet for the New Year: Swiss-If you are watching your salt intake, Swiss cheese is a good option with only 55 mg of sodium per ounce. Feta-Although both kinds are high in sodium (one ounce has 325 mg), at approximately 80 calories per ounce, feta is lower in calories than many other cheeses. Feta also provides 4 grams of protein per serving. Dried Mushrooms Cultivated Mushrooms Fresh/Frozen Truffles/Oils Black Winter Truffles Black & White Truffle Oils Truffle Peelings Mozzarella-One low-fat mozzarella stick has only 80 calories and provides 7 grams of protein and 222 mg of calcium. Parmesan-One ounce of Parmesan cheese has about 340 mg of calcium which is about 33 percent more than Swiss or mozzarella. However, Parmesan cheese is extremely high in sodium so it is not a good choice if you are on a low sodium diet. Source: *NOTE: Order Via Your Sales Rep With a 3-4 Day Lead Time.
