Owners John and Pam Solomon opened up Ventura s Rumfish y Vino just about eight months ago with the culinary guise of Executive Chef Paul Osborne at the helm. Rumfish y Vino is open 7 days a week serving up lunch and dinner and is open for Sunday brunch that may include one of Chef Paul s favorite dishes, Smoked Pork Belly with soft egg and red chili hominy. Stay for a cocktail or two...or more so you can try all of the delicious concoctions such as the Orange Jalapeño Margarita or the Dragonfruit Caipiroska. What better way to enjoy the Southern California weather than relaxing in their outdoor dining area, which is over half of their dining space!

According to Classical Greek myth, it was first prepared by the Cyclops Polyfimos and there are cheese making artifacts in the Museum of Delphi that date back to the 6th century B.C. that reference the Feta making process. On the whole, Feta is a white, pickled, curd cheese that has a salty and tangy taste enhanced by the brine solution. The texture depends on the age, which can make it extremely creamy or crumbly dry. Feta is used as an appetizer, side dish, and as an ingredient in salads, filled pies, and pastries. Its use in preparing and serving Greek food is almost as imperative as the use of olive oil. Many countries in the Balkan and Mediterranean region have their own variation of Feta cheese. But, to be considered a true Feta, it must have a minimum 70% sheep s milk, with the rest being goat milk. The rest are Feta style white cheeses. A prime example is Danish Feta (also called Danish White) which is made from cow's milk. Though it isn't authentic, the Danish type of feta is sometimes preferred due to its mild flavor and ability to be cubed and sliced without crumbling. Apricots CA varieties coming to an end with sizing on the small side, but good eating quality. We should fully transition to Northwestern Apricots in the next couple of weeks. Plums: Black and Red Plums are available out of CA. Cherries The cherry market is steady with only 3 weeks at most left in the Washington deal. Rainiers look to be done even sooner. Ask about our Farmer s Market Melons! The market value of Watermelon will be high due to 4th of July festivities. Avocados California has been picking up the demand as Mexico s new crop is slow to start. It should pick up little bit mid-month. Berries CA Strawberries/Stemberries Mainly out of Salinas and Santa Maria now. You may see darker berries due to a heat wave to start the month. Raspberries Salinas is winding down as Watsonville and Santa Maria will increase production over the coming weeks. Blueberries California s recent heat has halted production in some areas and the anticipated transition up to the Pacific North West should happen in the next couple of weeks. Blackberries Baja, Santa Maria and Oxnard are the main growing regions and transitions are looking to happen for the next couple weeks. Citrus Grapefruit Currently coming from CA. Ventura Lemons are the main crop right now. Meyer Lemons coming in from New Zealand. Limes/Key Limes Blood Oranges This CA crop of Blood Oranges is finishing for the season and we have to wait until Australia produces which is projected in late August. Grapes New crop Mexico and CA grapes have started with red, green and black seedless. CA Black Mission and Brown Turkey Figs Available until September. We are likely to see other varieties soon. Pineapple We are seeing supplies from the tropics lighten. Look for lighter supplies to run through July and August as this is a planned lighter production period. Apples Washington is still in the peak of its red delicious, golden delicious, and Granny-smith apples seasons. Pears California is scheduled to start packing newcrop Bartlett and red pears the week of July 10. Exotics From Around the World Dragon Fruit/Pitaya (from Vietnam/Nicaragua), Passion Fruit (transitioning from New Zealand to USA), Caped Gooseberries (Columbia), Lychee (China then Mexico starts new crop), Rambutan (Guatamala), Jumbo Taiwan Star Fruit (winding down to start again until Sept.), Feijoas (done from New Zealand; CA end of July), Young Coconut out of Thailand (limited until August), South African Baby Pineapple, Quince (Chile).

Chards Green, Red, Yellow and Rainbow are CAgrown. Cucumbers Persian and Japanese available along with your standard cucumber varieties. Hot House Cucumbers are coming in from a local farm. Eggplant Graffiti and White are available in the Summer months sporadically. Italian, Japanese & Indian available as well, along with your standard purple eggplant. Fresh Herbs & Flowering Herb Sorrel, Marjoram, Lemon Thyme, Bay, Dill, Sage, Cilantro, Lemon Verbena, Mint, Parsley, Rosemary, Thyme Kale Lacinato, Purple Flowering, Red Boar and Kale Sprouts (Lollipops) available. Lettuces & Baby Lettuces Available, but Summer heat can affect delicate CA lettuces. Micro Green & Flowers A variety of Micros are available to garnish your favorite summer dish. How about a Micro Orchid or Pansies! Okra Peaks in the Summer. Peas English Peas (some gapping), Snap Peas, Snow Peas, & Pea Tendrils available. Potatoes Bakersfield potatoes have been affected by the heat-wave hitting the west and there are some quality issues out there. It could cut some time off of their season but we'll have to wait and see. Radishes All of the wonderful Babe Farm varieties, i.e., French Breakfast, Purple Plum, Rosas, Sparkler, Black and Watermelon Radishes. Summer Squash Varieties include: Baby Summer Squash, Patty Pan, Sunburst, and Baby Zucchini. Squash Blossoms Picked at its peak and available locally. Pre-order these delicate delights for best availability. Tomatoes Summer favorites include Heirloom varieties. Locally-grown and great additions to your summertime menu. Summer Vegetables: Mixed Fingerlings, Baby Colored Cauliflower, Corn, Baby Squash, Fennel, Radicchio.
