Crop rota on is an important prac ce in a vegetable garden to reduce plant disease and insect problems along with improving soil fer lity. Vegetables that belong to the same family are suscep ble to the same types of insects and plant diseases along with having similar nutrient requirements. Crop rota on involves each year changing the plan ng loca on of vegetables that belong to the same family. For example you would not want to plant tomatoes in the same loca on as last year but also do not want to plant peppers, eggplants, and potatoes in the same loca on since they are all in the same vegetable family. Below are the main vegetable families: * Composite Family: Endive, Le uce, Sunflower * Mallow Family: Okra * Goosefoot Family: Beet, Spinach, Swiss Chard * Mustard Family: Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Collard, Kale, * Gourd Family: Cantaloupe, Cucumber, Pumpkin, Squash, Mustard greens, Radish, Rutabaga, Turnip Watermelon * Nightshade Family: Eggplant, Pepper, Potato, Tomato * Grass Family: Ornamental corn, Sweet Corn * Parsley Family: Carrot, Celery, Parsley * Lily Family: Chives, Garlic, Onion * Pea Family: Bush bean, Lima bean, Pea, Pole bean Prepared by: Jessica Strickland, Wayne County Agriculture Extension Agent - Hor culture Reviewed June 2014 Leaflet adapted from NC Coopera ve Extension Home Vegetable Gardening Quick Reference Guide (Ag-12) & UGA Coopera ve Extension Vegetable Chart (Circular 963) Distributed in furtherance of the acts of Congress of May 8 and June 30, North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University commit themselves to positive action to secure equal opportunity regardless of race, creed, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.
