4 Four-Way action on Gut Health Actazin is a new digestive supplement ingredient, manufactured from New Zealand's own superfruit, the kiwifruit, which has been clinically proven to support gut health by improving regularity and other long term digestive health benefits. 10 Dysbiosis Out of Balance When the intestines contain the balance of good and bad bacteria that is optimal for good health, they are described as being in a state of symbiosis. Alternatively, dysbiosis (a contraction of the term dys-symbiosis symbiosis ) occurs when this balance is upset. Dysbiosis can result from a deficiency of good bacteria or an overgrowth of harmful organisms. In this study the ability of natural water extracts of kiwifruit to reduce lipopolysaccharide from pathogenic bacteria; (LPS)- induced tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β production was evaluated ated in vitro as a measure of potential anti-inflammatoryinflammator activity. it Kiwifruit cultivars showed promising activity with human THP-1 monocytes and peripheral whole blood, although differential effects were seen in individual donors. These results provide supporting evidence for further studies that kiwifruit may be useful in diets to help combat the inflammation underlying many chronic diseases associated with modern lifestyles.

Authors: Shu Molan AL, Kruger MC, Drummond LN. Abstract: The consumption of kiwifruit is associated with a number of health benefits related to gastrointestinal function. These benefits are generally attributed to the high levels of vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and bioactive phytochemicals present in kiwifruit. There is a need to investigate the biological activities of specific fractions of kiwifruit on markers of gastrointestinal health. Aqueous extracts of Kiwifruit and assessed for their ability to influence the growth of both beneficial and pathogenic bacteria under in vitro conditions. In addition, the potential of kiwifruitifr it to modulate the activityit of ß-glucosidase and ß- glucuronidase was investigated. A series of in vitro experiments were conducted to evaluate both the antimicrobial and prebiotic properties, and intestinal bacterial enzyme activities of kiwifruit extracts. In addition, extracts prepared from kiwifruit was able to promote the growth of beneficial lactic acid bacteria (LAB) especially at high concentrations and reduce the growth of Escherichia coli. It was concluded that kiwifruit extract promotes antimicrobial and prebiotic activities when tested under in vitro conditions. Kiwifruit extract has also been shown to beneficially modulate the intestinal bacterial

Abstract: The present study examined the effects of a kiwifruit extract on immune response in BALB/c mice. The effects were investigated using cholera vaccine (11 days duration) and diphtheria/tetanus toxoid-vaccine (29 days duration) models. Mice were given either test (standard diet incorporated with kiwifruit extract) or control diets ad libitum throughout the respective experimental periods. At the end, blood, spleen and intestinal fluids were collected for determination of cell proliferation, specific antibody responses, cytokine production, phagocytosis, and natural-killer cell activity. it Kiwifruit extract significantly enhanced (p<0.05) specific intestinal mucosal and serum antibody responses to the vaccines and promoted interferon-gamma and natural killer cell activities. The overall results of the present study demonstrate the ability of kiwifruit extract to enhance markers of innate and acquired immunity in the tested mouse model.
