Rominger, Director Calif~rnia Department of Food and Agriculture and The Honorable Board of Supervisors Stanislaus County The Stanislaus County Crop Report for is hereby submitted. Gross farm income is estimated to be $424,884,660, an increase of 6.9 percent over the estimate. The gain is attributed primarily to nut crops and to livestock and poultry products. Many individual farmers suffered significant financial loss, particularly livestock producers and fruit and vegetable growers. Collectively, gross income to these farmers was approximately $7,000,000 below. The continuing drought, strikes in the freezer and cannery industries, and unseasonal rains late in the summer resulted in some reduced yields, unharvested acreage and, in some cases, poorer quality in field and vegetable crops. The number of cattle sold rose by 27,00 head because drought conditions forced the early sale of herds. In spite of the volume, however, gross income was down because animals were sold before attaining full weight and the increased number of sales depressed prices. It must be emphasized that the estimates represent gro~s farm income only. Net incomes in many cases were drastically affected by the adverse conditions.
