3 Welcome from the Committee The 2015 Yarra Valley Wine Show was another success and one in which we continued to push for more improvement. In addition to some key personnel changes, the most significant modification was the introduction of a fifth judging panel. The aim of this was to reduce the number of wines judged per day, while keeping the judging down to two days both of which are important for results and attracting high quality judges. This was a major undertaking and increased the workload of our whole team. None of us has enough spare time and so I would like to thank the folks who invest theirs to make this one of the best regional shows in Australia. Firstly, our army of stewards who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to set up, pack up, pour, re-pour and keep the dishwasher humming, all the while with a smile. Next, the Wine Show Committee who begin their work as soon as the previous show finishes. In particular, I would like to thank Amber Sawkins, our new Chief Steward and Margaret Van Der Meulen, our Show Secretary, both of whom put in a herculean effort to keep a complex operation like ours moving - especially over the last few weeks. Thanks must also go to Richard Howden and Susanne Pyle at YVWS HQ, who work very hard on both the back of house and public-facing aspects of the show many months in advance. Finally, I would like to thank our Judges, Associate Judges and especially our new Chair of Judges, Philip Rich. We were lucky enough to assemble a tremendously talented and experienced judging team this year and they were all very positive about the relaxed, professional environment of our show. Finally to Philip I would like to thank him for steering the judging process so well in a considered, professional manner. His efforts and style give us great confidence that the show is in good hands and his tenure will continue to see our show go from strength to strength. Mark O Callaghan Chair Yarra Valley Wine Show Committee Judges Report The Yarra Valley is capable of making superb sparkling wine, chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon and the results of this year s show yet again backs this up with 36 gold medals being awarded to these wines. had the most entries (94) and with over a quarter of the wines being awarded 90 points or above, class 4 was a pleasure to judge with the top wines showing superb purity of fruit and deft winemaking. The museum trophy winner demonstrating too just how well the best wines can age. And while a pinot noir won the trophy for the best red wine, the top shiraz and cabernets won the plaudits of those judges who work with these varieties in other regions. As with the chardonnay and pinot classes, the trophy winners were not clear cut and the best shiraz and cabernets came in a range of styles from those at the lighter, more perfumed end of the spectrum (but still with good concentration) to bigger, denser yet still beautifully balanced wines. Elsewhere it was encouraging to see rosé and alternative varieties such as sangiovese get gold medals as producers continue to experiment with what s possible in the region and I would expect to see these categories grow in coming years. I would also like to thank the stewards, fellow judges and the committee for their total support in my first year as chair and I look forward to the challenge of making next year s show even better.
