26 TH TASMANIAN WINE SHOW The Tasmanian Wine Show, the regional show for all of the State s wines, was first held in 1991, with James Halliday as Chairman of judges of both panels; one of judges awarding medals and one of winemakers providing technical feedback. Huon Hooke joined James to judge the Show the following year, and they returned most years since then, overseeing the growth of the Tasmanian wine industry and to fly-fish the State s rivers and lakes. The contribution of both James and Huon over 25 years has been immense. Huon is now Chairman of Judges and James, the Emeritus Chairman, continues his active involvement including the Trophy Presentation Dinner. This year we welcomed sparkling specialist Kate Laurie of Deviation Road in the Adelaide Hills and were very pleased with the return of Nick Bulleid, Master of Wine. The third judge position on the panel has provided opportunities for local, national and international judges. Also many in the industry have experienced judging for the first time as an Associate Judge at the Tasmanian Wine Show. The ongoing support of our sponsors is greatly appreciated. The volunteers who have selflessly given up their time over many years fully deserve our thanks, and the contribution of Steve Lockwood as Chief Stewart, Linda as Senior Steward and the current stewarding team are acknowledged. The tremendous contribution of the Tasmanian Wine Show Committee, plus their partners and families, has been vital for the ongoing success of the Show. The Committee is committed to supporting students making a contribution to viticulture. Amongst other initiatives, we award an ongoing Tasmanian Wine Show Society Honours Scholarship at the School of Agricultural Science, University of Tasmania. The very high strike rate of medals awarded at the annual Tasmanian Wine Show is a reflection of the quality of Tasmanian wine. The Tasmanian Wine Show is dedicated in its ongoing support of the Tasmanian Wine Industry. I thank all of the 65 producers and 78 brands for their entries this year and their ongoing support of the show. May the Tasmanian wine industry and the Tasmanian Wine Show continue to grow and flourish over the next quarter of a century and beyond. Cheers! Phil Laing President Tasmanian Wine Show

Class 1 LD Mature Sparking Wine (Number of entries 2) 1 Lake Barrington Vineyard Alexandra 2007 Silver 2 Kreglinger Brut Rose 2005 Gold Both these wines were remarkably fresh and alive, a tribute to good cool-climate grapes and winemaking. Class 2 Vintage Sparkling Wine 5 Goaty Hill MAIA Sparkling 2011 Bronze 6 Abel's Tempest Brut Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2011 Silver 7 Radenti Sparkling 2011 Bronze 11 Bangor Sparkling 2010 Bronze 13 Heemskerk Chardonnay Pinot Noir Sparkling 2010 Gold 14 Kate Hill Sparkling 2010 Bronze 15 Moorilla Extra Brut Rose 2010 Gold 17 Moorilla Extra Brut 2010 Silver 18 Velo Dominique Rose 2009 Bronze 21 Pirie 2009 Top Gold 22 Frogmore Creek Cuvee Evermore 2008 Silver Some cleanliness issues here, as several wines showed off characters. The older wines were best. Some wines lacked balance, either too much sweetness, or not

enough in some of the austere. Pure chance that we gave golds to three different styles all excellent. Class 3 Non-Vintage Sparkling Wine 1 Roaring Beach Sparkling Cuvée NV Bronze 5 Riverdale Crux Tasmanian Sparkling NV Bronze 7 Moores Hill Blanc De Blancs NV Silver 8 Josef Chromy NV Sparkling NV Bronze 9 Frenchman's Cap NV NV Bronze 11 Clover Hill Rose NV Bronze 12 Frenchman's Cap Fresne NV Bronze 14 Pirie NV Top Gold A preponderance of young simple wines and some were stale or dirty. The top wine had real intensity and length as well as matured complexity. Class Riesling 1 Freycinet Riesling 2015 Silver 3 Craigow Riesling 2015 Bronze 5 Ghost Rock Riesling 2015 Bronze 6 Leo Buring Leopold Riesling 2015 Bronze

7 Milton Riesling 2015 Gold 8 Goaty Hill Riesling 2015 Bronze 9 Derwent Estate Riesling 2015 Silver 12 Puddleduck Riesling 2015 Bronze 13 Josef Chromy Riesling 2015 Silver 14 Margaret Pooley Tribute Riesling 2015 Top Gold 15 Relbia Estate Riesling 2015 Silver 16 Pooley Riesling 2015 Gold 17 Bream Creek Riesling 2015 Bronze 18 Society Directors' Selection Riesling 2015 Silver 19 Pseudonym Riesling 2015 Bronze 20 Gala Estate Riesling 2015 Silver 22 Tamar Ridge Riesling 2015 Bronze Very Strong Class, varietally cohesive and technically quite impressive, except for a couple of mousey wines, and some sulphides. Top wines have lovely flavour, balance and potential to age. Class Riesling 1 Society Directors' Selection Riesling 2014 Bronze 2 Laurel Bank Riesling 2014 Bronze

3 Derwent Estate Riesling 2014 Silver 4 Chartley Estate Riesling 2014 Top Gold 5 Bream Creek Riesling 2014 Gold Small but beautifully formed! This class showed serval superb Rieslings which are evolving magnificently. Great intensity of lime/lemon fruit, drive and length on wines 4 and 5. Class and older Riesling 1 Velo Riesling 2013 Bronze 2 Craigow Riesling 2013 Silver 3 Brook Eden Riesling 2013 Bronze No Comment Class 7 Gewurztraminer 1 Milton Vineyard Gewurztraminer 2015 Bronze No Comment Class 8 Pinot Gris / Grigio 2 Josef Chromy Pinot Gris 2015 Bronze

3 Ghost Rock Pinot Gris 2015 Top Gold 4 Goaty Hill Pinot Gris 2015 Silver 5 Velo Pinot Gris 2015 Silver 6 Wines for Joanie Pinot Gris 2015 Bronze 9 Gala Estate Pinot Gris 2015 Bronze 10 Frenchman's Cap Pinot Gris 2015 Silver 12 Moorilla Muse Series Pinot Gris 2015 Bronze 16 Pooley Pinot Grigio 2015 Bronze 17 Chartley Estate Pinot Grigio 2015 Bronze 18 Relbia Estate Pinot Grigio 2015 Bronze Degrees South Pinot Grigio 2015 Bronze 20 Devil's Corner Pinot Grigio 2015 Gold Strong Class, with a high strike rate and serendipitously, the two gold, were one of each style. The variety suits Tasmania and winemakers are becoming more skilled at handling it. Class 9 Sauvignon Blanc 1 42 Degrees South Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Bronze 7 Velo Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Bronze 8 Josef Chromy Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Gold 10 Celemens Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Bronze

12 Frenchman's Cap Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Top Gold 14 Moorilla Praxis Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Bronze 15 Roaring Beach Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Bronze Degrees South Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Bronze 20 Craigow Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Bronze A better class of Sauvignon Blanc than usual. With two golds and a smattering of bronzes, but still not a strong class. The main problems are hardness, green unripe fruit flavours and unbalanced sweetness. Class 10 Oaked Sauvignon Blanc 1 Wineglass Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Silver 2 Ghost Rock Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Bronze 3 Josef Chromy Fume Blanc 2015 Top Gold 5 Frogmore Creek Fume Blanc 2015 Bronze 6 Clemens Hill Fune Blanc 2015 Gold 9 Frogmore Creek Fume Blanc 2014 Bronze At the risk of encouraging everyone to rush off and oak their Sauvignon Blanc, there is more interesting wine in this small class than in the bigger unwooded class. Number 6 is quite Graves-like, while 3 is more subtly oaked and fragrant. Class 11 Unoaked Chardonnay

1 42 Degrees South Chardonnay 2015 Bronze 2 Craigow Chardonnay 2015 Bronze No Comment Class oaked Chardonnay 1 Moores Hill Chardonnay 2015 Silver No Comment Class oaked Chardonnay 3 Riverdale Crater Tasmanian Chardonnay 2014 Bronze 4 Goaty Hill Chardonnay 2014 Bronze 5 Heemskerk Chardonnay 2014 Silver 6 Home Hill Kelly's Reserve Chardonnay 2014 Bronze 7 Derwent Estate Chardonnay 2014 Silver 8 Ghost Rock Chardonnay 2014 Bronze 10 Freycinet Chardonnay 2014 Gold 11 Derwent Estate Calcaire Chardonnay 2014 Top Gold 12 Bangor 1830 Chardonnay 2014 Gold

13 Abel's Tempest Chardonnay 2014 Gold 14 Holyman Chardonnay 2014 Silver A strong class, looking at the hit rate, but a much smaller and less consistent class than we usually see here. Several wines were forward developed and lacked vibrancy to age. Top Gold is a fine reserved style that will drink well now and for years to come. Class and older Oaked Chardonnay 1 Frogmore Creek Chardonnay 2013 Bronze 6 Celemens Hill "Aurelia" Chardonnay 2013 Bronze 9 Cape Bernier Chardonnay 2012 Gold 10 Bream Creek Chardonnay 2012 Gold 12 Riverdale Crater Tasmanian Chardonnay 2012 Bronze 14 Nocton N1 Reserve Chardonnay 2011 Top Gold 16 Velo Willows Reserve Chardonnay 2010 Bronze The results speak for themselves. No silvers just three exceptional wines won golds, then there was a gap to the rest. A lot of wines had sulphides which had gone wrong and harmed the wine. Some showed sweetness or pineappley over ripeness. Class 15 Other White Wines

1 Bream Creek Schönburger 2015 Bronze Class summary No Comment Class 16 Medium Sweet Wines 1 Chartley Estate Late Harvest Riesling 2015 Bronze 3 Frogmore Creek FGR 2015 Silver 4 Derwent Estate Late Harvest Riesling 2015 Top Gold 6 Gala Estate Late Harvest Riesling 2014 Gold Class summary This style is a particular strength for Tasmania. The gold medal wines were delicate and delicious in their different styles. Class 17 Sweet Wines 1 Josef Chromy Botrytis Riesling 2015 Top Gold 3 Craigow Dessert Riesling 2015 Gold 4 Milton Vineyard Iced Gewurztraminer 2014 Bronze 5 Frogmore Creek Iced Riesling 2014 Bronze 4 Milton Vineyard Iced Gewurztraminer 2014 Bronze Class summary Several good wines here with two standouts. A couple of wines lacked freshness Class Pinot Noir

1 42 Degrees South Pinot Noir 2015 Bronze 2 Derwnet Estate LimeKiln Point Pinot Noir 2015 Bronze 3 Stoney Rise Pinot Noir 2015 Bronze 4 Moores Hill Pinot Noir 2015 Bronze 5 Craigow Pinot Noir 2015 Silver 6 Devil's Corner Pinot Noir 2015 Bronze 7 TMV Silver A good class of mostly early-drinking pinot styles with fruitness, softness and accessibility. Some wines push oak a bit far. Class Pinot Noir 1 Dawson James Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 2 Society Directors' Selection Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 5 Six Friends Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 8 Lisdillon Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 9 Riverdale Centaurus Tasmanian Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 11 Chartley Estate Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 12 Pembroke Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 13 Derwnet Estate Pinot Noir 2014 Silver

14 Stoney Rise Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 16 Heemskerk Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 18 Ghost Rock Two Blocks Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 19 Milton Pinot Noir 2014 Gold 21 Derwnet Estate Calcaire Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 22 Bangor Abel Tasman Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 23 Pooley Wines Butcher's Hill Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 24 Frogmore Creek Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 27 Josef Chromy Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 28 Home Hill Estate Pinot Noir 2014 Gold 29 Coal Valley Vineyard Barilla Bay Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 30 Home Hill Landslide Pinot Noir 2014 Silver 31 GlenAyr Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 32 Coal Valley Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 34 Devil's Corner Mt Amos Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 35 Frenchman's Cap Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 36 Moorilla Praxis Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze 37 Devil's Corner Resolution Pinot Noir 2014 Top Gold 39 Home Oak The Wizard Pinot Noir 2014 Bronze A good class with a high strike rate, with plenty of golds and silvers. However,

we were expecting more; many wines showed slightly overripe flavours and blocky, solid structures with firm tannins that lacked textural charm. There was no shortage of colour or body weight. Class Pinot Noir 1 Dawson James Pinot Noir 2013 Gold 2 Laurel Bank Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 3 Pages Creek Pinot Noir 2013 Gold 6 Celemens Hill Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 7 Cape Bernier 2013 Silver 8 Velo Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 9 Goaty Hill Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 13 Pembroke Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 16 Brook Eden Nero Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 18 Bream Creek Pinot Noir 2013 Silver 23 Bevan Family Wines 2013 Bronze 24 Home Hill Kelly's Reserve Pinot Noir 13 Silver 25 Native Point Pinot Noir 2013 Silver 26 Winstead Lot 16 Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 28 Gala Estate Constable Amos Silver Estate Pinot Noir 2013 Top Gold

29 Home Oak The Wizard Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 30 Tamar Ridge Reserve Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 31 Leaning Church Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013 Silver 32 Moorilla Muse Series Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze 33 Tamar Ridge Pinot Noir 2013 Bronze A mixed class. Many wines were already tired or over ripe reflecting the season s difficulties perhaps, while the top handful of wines were still fresh, lively and delicious with good pinot fruit of correct ripeness Class and older Pinot Noir 1 Nocton N1 Reserve Pinot Noir 2012 Bronze 4 Josef Chromy Zdar Pinot Noir 2012 Bronze 5 Two Bud Spur Vineyard 2012 Silver 6 Winstead Lot 7 Pinot Noir 2012 Top Gold 8 Winstead Lot 16 Pinot Noir 2012 Gold 9 Bream Creek Pinot Noir 2012 Silver 11 Frogmore Creek Pinot Noir 2012 Bronze 12 Kate Hill Pinot Noir 2012 Silver 18 Native Point Pinot 2010 Bronze We expected more freshness and fruit. These are still young wines but many were tiring all ready, some stale and drying out. Surprising that good years like 2012 and 2010 did not produce more age worthy Pinots.

Class 22 Cabernet Sauvignon 3 Velo Willows Reserve Cabernet Sauvigon 2009 Bronze 4 Velo Willows Reserve 2007 Silver The old wine is drinking beautifully now; a triumph for Tassie Cabernet. Class 23 Other Bordeaux varieties and blends 4 Laurel Bank Cabernet Merlot 2013 Top Gold 7 Bream Creek Cabernet Merlot 2012 Silver 8 Freycinet cabernet /merlot 2012 Bronze The good, the bad and the ugly! A few wines were stale, or under ripe or oxidised, but there were some good wines, led by an exceptional Cabernet Merlot. Class 24 Shiraz 2 Blue Penguin Wines Shiraz 2014 Bronze 3 Pseudonym Shiraz 2014 Silver 6 Pseudonym Shiraz 2013 Silver

There is good potential for Shiraz in Tasmania, but there was no star this year, alas. Number 3 could score better with a little more time. Class 25 Rose 2 Bream Creek Pinot Rosé 2015 Silver 3 Ghost Rock Rose 2015 Bronze 4 Craigow Rosé 2015 Bronze 5 Puddleduck Rose 2015 Silver 6 Derwent Estate Rose 2015 Bronze 7 Cape Bernier Rose 2015 Silver Several clean, well-made wines which have drinkability. The only wines not to score had faults. Class 26 Other Reds No Awards. Class 27 Fortified Wines No Awards. Class 28 Museum 1 Puddleduck Bubbleduck 2006 Gold 3 Craigow Riesling 2008 Gold 4 Puddleduck Riesling 2006 Silver

5 Freycinet Chardonnay 2009 Bronze 6 Puddleduck Chardonnay 2006 Silver 7 Freycinet Pinot Noir 2009 Gold 8 Home Hill Kelly' Reserve Pinot Noir 2009 Bronze 10 Puddleduck Pinot Noir 2009 Bronze 11 Home Hill Estate Pinot Noir 2008 Bronze 14 Frogmore Creek FGR 2008 Silver Rieslings aged superbly but would be even better with a trace of sweetness. Several Pinot Noirs taste dried out and unbalanced, perhaps due to over-extraction. The bubbly was superb.
