5 24 TH TASMANIAN WINE SHOW The Tasmanian Wine Show, the regional show for all the State s wines, was first held in 1991, with James Halliday as Chairman of judges of both panels; one of judges awarding medals and one of winemakers providing technical feedback. Huon Hooke joined James to judge the Show the following year, and they returned most years since then, overseeing the growth of the Tasmanian wind industry and to fly-fish the State s rivers and lakes. The contribution of both James and Huon over 24 years has been immense. Huon is now Chief of Judges and James, the Emeritus Chairman, continues his active involvement including the Trophy Presentation Dinner. The third judge position on the panel has provided opportunities for both local and international judges. Also many in the industry have experienced judging for the first time as an Associate at the Tasmanian Wine Show. The ongoing support of our sponsors is greatly appreciated. The volunteers who have selflessly given up their time over many years fully deserve our thanks, and the contribution of Nigel Donachie as Chief Stewart and of the current stewarding team are acknowledged. The tremendous contribution of the Tasmanian Wine Show Committee, plus their partners and families, has been vital for the ongoing success of the Show. The Committee is committed to supporting students making a contribution to viticulture. Amongst other initiative it is offering an ongoing Tasmanian Wine Show Society Honours Scholarship at the School of Agricultural Science, University of Tasmania. The very high strike rate of medals awarded at the annual Tasmanian Wine Show is a reflection of the quality of Tasmanian wine. 10 Very strong class, with an unusually high number of silver medals in addition to 4 golds. Top wine is delicately restrained and refined. Many diverse styles, with several powerful, concentrated wines as was ass the more restrained. The 2013 style seems lower in residual sugar but high in fragrance. 11 A class in two parts; there are the austere backward styles and the more overt, opulent Alsace styles. Some wines simply lack fruit and character. There was a big gulf between the medal wines and the rest. Many wines were green and hollow with unbalanced acid and a lack of drinkability. A pleasure to judge. The class showcases the great quality of Aussie Chardonnay, of which Tasmania is a leading exponent. It is possible to have delicacy with intensity and palate length! Top wine is a perfect example.

Some of the non-medal wines were over developed. Superb wines, and those with some age demonstrated how these wines respond to cellaring.

A pleasing lack of either bretty or green wines, but the chief problems were over ripeness and excessive oak. A lot of wines are trending towards a big, deeply coloured and very ripe style but they re missing the higher toned complexing aromatics. Not only were there plenty of high-scorers, but there were few poor wines. We might have expected lighter, more ephemeral wines from 2011, but these wines had good concentration and tannin structure. A lot of wines were stale and/or to oaky Class and older Cabernet Sauvignon 2 Observatory Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Bronze 3 Frogmore Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Bronze Class and older other Bordeaux varieties and blends 4 Frogmore Creek Petit Verdot 2010 Bronze 5 Coal Valley Vineyard 2010 Bronze 7 The Bend Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Bronze Class 24 Rose 1 Home Hill Rose 2013 Bronze Class 25 Other Reds 1 Waterton Shiraz 2012 Top Gold 2 Velo Sharaz Cabernet 2012 Bronze 3 GlenAyr Wines Shiraz 2012 Bronze 4 Glaetier - Dixon Mon Pere 2012 Silver 6 Motton Terraces 2013 Bronze The top wine showcases all the good attributes of cool-climate Shiraz without any of the drawbacks; an elegant, spicy, medium-bodied wine. The Tempranillo is on the right track but the acidity needs taming.
