3 WELCOME Welcome from the Committee The 2016 Yarra Valley Wine Show was another success and one in which we continued to push for more improvement both in the preparation and execution of the show. The Wine Show Committee works all year to collectively make ours one of the best regional shows in the country. Changes to this year s schedule included reinstating a Rosé trophy in a response to the quality of rosé entries during the 2015 show and the growing interest in this category. The Cabernet class was split into two classes, varietal Cabernet Sauvignon (greater than 85%) and Bordeaux varieties and their blends. This then required two new trophy sponsors and I am grateful for the new sponsorship. We are lucky to attract quality judges from far and wide and from all facets of the wine industry, from Winemakers to Sommeliers and trade. This gives greater depth to the knowledge and experience in the room. It is very much appreciated that these judges took the time out of their busy schedules to help our wine show run smoothly. Needing five panels to get through the entries requires an army of helpers out the back. The show couldn t run without the swag of volunteers quietly and swiftly clearing and pouring the wines to keep to the tight schedule. Once again a huge thank you to these wonderful people and especially Amber Sawkins as Chief Steward for steering them so professionally. As Amber s tenure as Chief Steward is now over, we welcome Elita Vezis as the incoming Chief Steward who will be taking over in this role in A special thanks to Su Pettitt, the new Show Secretary for keeping a calm hold over the results and schedule with the help of our previous Show Secretary Margaret Van Der Meulen. This year I requested the Marketing Committee take over the reins of the Wine Show Trophy Presentation Lunch so this committee could stick to the smooth running of the wine show. Thank you to Richard Howden and Susanne Pyle for making this happen and also co-ordinating our entries, judges and everything else that comes along. Finally, a huge thank you to our Chair of Judges, Philip Rich, for taking ownership of the judging process, the Judges and Associate Judges and steering them to some great results. 4 FROM THE JUDGES Judges Report While there was virtually the same amount of entries in 2016 as the previous year (367 compared to 371) on the back of the superb 2015 vintage, this year s show saw a 15% increase in the 95 point (gold) and 90 point (silver) wines awarded. In particular, in Class 7 featuring Pinot Noir from 2014 and 2015, 70% of the wines scored 85 points (bronze) and above while 20% of all the wines entered were awarded 95 points or more. Equally interesting was that, in this cooler year, wines from both the upper Yarra and valley floor performed well in what is clearly an outstanding year for Pinot Noir. The Shiraz class was another highlight with the best wines from both 2014 and 2015 (mainly) showing superb vibrancy and good winemaking and with the Champion of Show coming Class 11 for Shiraz and Shiraz dominant blends. Again, like with the Pinot Noir class there was a good spread of wines from both the upper and lower Yarra and in styles ranging from wines made with a large percentage of whole bunches to those made with little or no whole bunches. One of the highlights of this year s show was the number of 95 point wines in the Aromatic White or blends (Class 2) Best Other Single White Varieties & blends (Class 3) Best Other Single Red Varieties & blends (Class 7). This year the panel chairs and judges were asked to taste the wines in the first round of judging without knowing what the wines or blends were. This was to avoid possibly knowing who made certain wines and to be as impartial as possible. Only once the best wines (which had at least one 95-point score against them) we randomised and repoured, were the judges then told what the varieties and blends were. That we ended up with 7 95 point wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Roussanne, Sangiovese, Gamay and a trophy winning wine made from Portuguese varieties is testament to the interest and quality in less planted and traditional Yarra varietals., as expected, was the largest class with 93 wines entered and while the percentage of 95 point wines were down slightly on last year, the best wines were both pure and very structured. My gut feeling is that the best 2015 s are tightly wound and will need some time to come together and open up. Some very good sparkling wines (dominated by one company) Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux Varieties & their blends rounded out a terrific showing from the region across a very wide variety of wines and styles. I would like to thank the stewards, fellow judges and the committee for their support in making this, my second year run even more smoothly and efficiently and I am already looking forward to making next year - my last - better again!
