1 MCLAREN VALE GRAPE WINE & TOURISM ASSOCIATION 2018 MGA INSURANCE WINE SHOW ENTRY SCHEDULE Dear Exhibitor, On behalf of the Wine Show Committee, we would like to welcome you to the 2018 MGA Insurance McLaren Vale Wine Show. Please find enclosed the 2018 Entry Schedule which provides full details of classes and regulations for your consideration; please read carefully. CHANGES TO CLASSES AND TROPHIES Changes made in 2016 and 2017 to class and trophy system will be maintained in In addition to the existing classes of the McLaren Vale Wine Show (MVWS), entries in classes 16 and 17 are now also eligible for entry in the 2018 James Halliday Grenache Challenge (JHGC). JAMES HALLIDAY GRENACHE CHALLENGE The JHGC is open to Grenache wines across Australia, however there is no additional entry fee for wines already entered in the MVWS. Those entering the MVWS, simply select the option for the entry in the JHGC. At delivery, an additional two bottles of these exhibits will be required. SINGLE VINEYARD TROPHY ELIGIBILITY SUSTAINABLE AUSTRALIA WINEGROWING Membership of the Sustainable Australia Winegrowing (SAW) program continues to be a requirement for eligibility for the Single Vineyard series of trophies. This does not preclude entry into other classes of the wine show. A valid SAW membership number must be supplied at time of entry for an exhibit to be considered for Single Vineyard trophies. If you do not know your membership number, please contact MVGWTA Office Manager, Carmen Rigney, carmen@mclarenvale.info JUDGING PANEL Judging for the 2018 MVWS will take place across three days, chaired by David LeMire of Shaw + Smith. The International Judge this year is Hong Kong based Corinne Mui from Asia Wine and Service Education Centre. This year s Panel Chairs are the esteemed Andrew Thomas, Fiona Donald and Nick Ryan TASTINGS, EVENTS AND PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES We again welcome you to attend the McLaren Vale Community night to be held on Sunday 14 th of October. This family friendly event is open to all MVGWTA Members of the wine community to celebrate the James Halliday Grenache Challenge and the start of judging. Tickets will be available mid- September so grab a ticket, pack a bottle of your finest and come along and meet the Judges in a fun and relaxed environment. Details to be distributed via the MVGWTA bulletin. The MGA Insurance Bushing Lunch will be held on Friday 26 th October at Serafino Wines, following which trophy and medal winners will be promoted through a series of industry and public events in McLaren Vale and Adelaide CBD. Serafino Wines will again host the McLaren Vale Exhibitors Tasting on Monday 29 th October.

2 The Leigh Street Trophy Tasting returns to Leigh Street again in 2018 and is confirmed for Friday 9 th November. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES Please take the time to read the schedule details, ensuring your wines are entered in the most appropriate classes so they can be best judged and rewarded. Of particular note, wines should not be entered in Class 24 (Other red blend or varietal) if they are eligible for entry in another class most commonly the Mediterranean varietal, BDX blend, Classic Australian blend or Shiraz and Grenache blend classes. THANKYOU AND GOODLUCK It is the Wine Show Committee s mission for 2018 to execute a successful wine show ensuring the excellence of the varieties, viticulture, production, provenance and sub-regionality are celebrated. This can only be achieved with the on-going support from you, the exhibitor. In return we aim to provide you value by showcasing the wines, producers and region in the best possible light. This year, the Committee has enjoyed a new wave of enthusiastic volunteers, joining the core of experienced campaigners, whose creativity and attention to detail has driven the standard of our Wine Show to new heights and who will ensure the smooth delivery and execution of the judging and all promotional opportunities. 3 MCLAREN VALE WINE SHOW VISION AND MISSION VISION: For the McLaren Vale Wine Show to be recognised as the premier regional wine show in Australia. MISSION: i. To showcase McLaren Vale wines and the region to local, interstate and international markets. ii. To ensure that excellence in varietal expression, viticulture, production, provenance and subregionality are celebrated. iii. To develop a vehicle that provides experiences and creates value for the producers and assists them in effectively promoting their products. iv. 5 REGULATIONS: Entries 1. Exhibits should be entered into the class which best reflects the wine as described on the bottle label. A wine entered into a Single Varietal class should be labeled as a single variety only. Wines that are described and presented on a label as containing more than one variety should be entered into the appropriate blend class. For example: A wine labeled as Shiraz Viognier should be entered into a Shiraz Predominant Blend Class or other Blend Classes. A wine labeled as only Shiraz but containing other varieties should be entered into a varietal Shiraz Class. Varieties that make up the blend but are not included on the label are to be made up to 100% total, but listed as Other. For wines entered into Blend Classes, stipulate only the percentage of varieties as stated on your label. Varieties not included on the label are to be made up to 100% total, but listed as Other. 2. Bottle requirements for each entry, unless otherwise stated, are as follows: Table Wine Classes - 4 x 750mL bottles Exhibits also entered in the JHGC - 6 x 750mL bottles total Fortified Wine Classes 4 x original commercial bottle size 3. Wines are to be entered under the principal brand name - not under a parent/subsidiary company name. The entry should reflect the label. 4. To be eligible to enter the 2018 McLaren Vale Wine Show exhibitors must have paid their wine industry fund contributions. Information on the wine industry funds may be found on the PIRSA Grape and Wine website 5. Exhibitor information including but not limited to company and contact details, wine names and scores become property of the McLaren Vale Wine Show. 6. The McLaren Vale Wine Show is open to any winemaker who makes wine using grapes sourced from within the McLaren Vale GI, as determined by Wine Australia. 7. All wines entered must conform to the Wine Australia Label Integrity Program. 8. A wine entered in any one class of the show may not be entered into another class, with the exception of the Icon Red Wine - Section 3. Exhibits 9. All exhibits become the property of the MVGWTA. 10. All exhibits must bear the Wine Show labels supplied by the McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee. 11. All exhibits with cork closures must have capsules removed. 12. All Exhibits are to be packed into cartons labeled with the carton stickers supplied by the McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee. 13. After the close of entries, no person other than the judges, stewards and the McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee shall be allowed access to the exhibits prior to the presentation of awards. 14. No protest will be entertained unless made in writing to the McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee within seven (7) days of the announcement of the awards. An official response will be received from the McLaren Vale Wine Show committee within seven (7) days of the initial protest. 15. All exhibitors shall accept the decisions of the McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee and of the judges as final. 16. Judges and stewards (other than committee members) shall not, at any time prior to the announcement of awards, have access to or knowledge of the identity of the exhibits. Bushing Award 17. The 2018 Bushing King/Queen title will be bestowed upon the exhibitor (or an authorized representative) who: The judges deem to have produced the best wine exhibited in Section 1. Is financially responsible for the entire production of the entered wine. 18. Entry of any wine into Section 1 is only to be made with the understanding that, should that wine be considered the winner of The Bushing Award, the exhibitor will be obliged to undertake promotional commitments whilst crowned Bushing King/Queen, as agreed with MVGWTA.

6 19. The winner of the Bushing Award is required to donate the winning wine in order to produce a 6L promotional bottle, including relevant labels, as an auction item at the Bushing Lunch. 20. The winning wine must be from a commercial bottling run with a minimum of 2250 litres (250 x 9 litres case equivalent). 21. An individual wine can win the Bushing Award once only. A Bushing Award winning wine may still be eligible for other trophies at future Wine Shows. Auditing 22. The committee, or an authorised person appointed by the Committee, may at any time investigate any exhibit to ensure that it conforms to the McLaren Vale Wine Show Regulations. Investigation may include visual inspection of stock or stock records or the use of laboratory analysis at a NATA accredited facility. The Committee, or an authorised person appointed by the committee, may request two bottles from the entered wine stock (in addition to the exhibits) at no charge, for auditing purposes. 23. The McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee has the right to refer an exhibitor to MVGWTA for disqualification where, in the committee s opinion, the exhibitor has broken the regulations of the show. Awards and Promotional Activities 24. It is a condition of entry that exhibitors must supply of wine for MVGWTA promotional purposes: Medal winners from sections 1 may be required to supply up to 9 dozen (750ml) bottles or equivalent volume of each medal winning wine. Two dozen are expected to be supplied free of charge and the remainder will be purchased at a set price of $180 per dozen inclusive of all taxes. Trophy winners from sections 1 may be required to supply up to 14 dozen (750ml) bottles or equivalent volume of each trophy winning wine. Two dozen are expected to be supplied free of charge and the remainder will be purchased at a set price of $180 per dozen inclusive of all taxes. The Trophy winner from section 2 will be required to supply 1 dozen (750ml) bottles or equivalent volume of the trophy winning wine which will be purchased at a set price of $180 per dozen inclusive of all taxes. Medal and trophy winners from section 3 are not required to supply wine. 25. Bushing, Signature and Major Trophy winners will be required to host a complimentary wine tasting experience for the associated trophy sponsor for up to 4 guests at a nominated venue (eg: winery Cellar Door or Partner Board Room) within 12 months following the Wine Show. 26. Trophy and gold medal winners may be invited to attend the Adelaide CBD Trophy Street Tasting event as detailed in the Key Dates and Deadlines Schedule (refer to Appendix 1). Exhibitors or an authorised representative are required to attend. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to sell their award winning wines at the event in accordance with the organisers and MVGWT regulations. Participating wineries will be responsible for the supply of their wine. 27. The Most Successful Exhibitor Trophy is awarded to the exhibitor with the highest average score calculated from their top five entered wines. In the event of a tie, the trophy will be decided by a medal count back. 28. To be eligible for the Small Producer Trophy, entries may be made in any class by producers who crushed less than 100 tonnes in total during the vintage from which the entered wine is made. The 100 tonne limit shall include any fruit, juice or wine purchased for use in wines within the producer s product range. It should be noted that producers who have parent or subsidiary companies are not considered to be separate entities. Bulk juice and wine purchased by the producer will be converted at the rate of 700 litres per tonne for juice and 650 litres per tonne for wine for compliance purposes. Records may be required in order for the Wine Show Committee to verify this limitation. 29. Exhibits eligible for the Single Vineyard Trophies must contain a minimum of 95% of wine produced from a single named vineyard, the name of which appears on the commercial bottle label. The named vineyard must be a single block, continuous and defined to the satisfaction of the Wine Show Committee. Exhibitors must supply a map of the vineyard showing the property location and block layout. Single vineyards must also be current members of the Sustainable Australia Winegrowing (SAW) initiative and comply with SAW s program regulations. Information can be found at:

7 30. Wines entered into section 1 are eligible for the Small Batch Wine Trophy. The trophy will be awarded to the best wine with a production volume of less than 2250 litres (250 x 9 litres case equivalent). 31. The Chairpersons Trophy will be awarded to the wine that the Chairman of Judges believes exhibits the past, present and future of the McLaren Vale Wine Region. JUDGING CONDITIONS: Sections 1, 2, and All judges will be selected at the discretion of the McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee. 33. The Chairman of Judges will at his/her discretion form the judging panels. 34. Each exhibit will be assessed by one judging panel with each judge giving a score out of 100 points. The three judges scores will be averaged to produce a panel score out of 100 points. Medals will be awarded as follows: points Gold points Silver points Bronze 35. Trophies will only be awarded to gold medal winning wines (scoring an aggregate of 95 points or higher). This rule does not apply to the following trophies: Icon Red Wine Chairperson s Trophy 36. The Chairman of Judges will have the authority to advise the McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee regarding the disqualification or reclassification of an exhibit which does not comply with the regulations or classifications of the McLaren Vale Wine Show. 37. Awards may be withheld in any class where exhibits are considered to be unworthy. Section 3 - McLaren Vale Icon Red Wine 38. The judging panel will be selected independent of McLaren Vale Wine Show judging panel. 39. The panel will be selected by McLaren Vale Wine Show Committee and Chairperson of McLaren Vale Wine Show. 40. All wines will be assessed by three judging panel members with only the winning wine trio announced. 41. The panel will award the trophy to the wine that showcases the ability of the McLaren Vale wine region to produce wine that can be compared favorably to wines on the national and international stage.

11 SECTION 3 - ICON RED WINE Minimum quantity required at time of entry: Class 34: 225 litres. Class 35: Nil volume requirements. Class 36: Nil volume requirements. Bottles required: 2 x 750ml bottles of each vintage. Number of entries: one entry per exhibitor, comprising three wines from the same label where one is the current release (class 34), one is 3-5 years older than the current release (class 35), and one is 6+ years older than the current release (class 36). Availability: Wines must be bottled from a commercial bottling and be or have been commercially available. Label: Wines must be labeled with the commercial label. LIP: Wines entered in this section must be made from 85% or greater McLaren Vale grapes. Scoring: Wines entered in this section will not be pointed and scores will not be made available. Judges will be judging the wines as a trio and, while overall quality is the main criteria, consistency of style will be a consideration. Judging panel: Wines in this section will be judged by a separate judging panel selected for their knowledge and understanding of McLaren Vale s wine styles. Wine Preparation: All wines will be double decanted two hours prior to judging. Wines will be served in a trio in order from youngest to oldest. Results: The best wine trio will be named as the winner of the Icon Wine Trophy. No one trio of wines can win twice in subsequent McLaren Vale Wine Shows. Purpose: This class is designed to give you the exhibitor a chance to enter your best red wine, from your best vintages, for evaluation by a panel of judges with an appreciation of the McLaren Vale region. The volume requirement has been made lower than the commercial classes to allow wines to be entered even if only a small amount is produced or the wine is no longer widely available. 12 BUSHING LUNCH TICKET ALLOCATION PER EXHIBIT ENTRIES: Tickets to the Bushing Lunch can be purchased online and are allocated based on number of Wine Show entries in sections 1-3 of the show, as follows: Entry Number >41 Bushing Lunch Ticket Allocation Exhibitors are provided first opportunity to secure tickets for the Bushing Lunch, purchased via Trybooking link will be distributed via e-bulletin to exhibitors by MVGWTA. Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
