The definition is simply put as the soil or the area where the grapes are grown. The differences have been documented and tracked to the beginning of wine. Some of the differences that are factored into a certain Terroir are climate, soil and topography. The soils from region to region and even in the same vineyard can have subtle differences that change the flavors of wine even with the exact same grapes. That is why a Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France and a Pinot Noir from Sonoma, California are drastically different. But it can even relate to the same grapes that are planted within a few feet of each other because of specific topographical differences such as drainage and the soil s ability to retain heat. So the next time you re drinking wine and someone starts to talk about the Terroir, you now know it s just the place where the grapes are grown. And you then can start to build your taste bud library of the differences in wine from around the world.

Serenata s 4th Annual Chili Cookoff to Benefit St. Johns County Council on Aging Saturday, January 24th 6-9pm Featuring DJ Ed Kinney Members will prepare and present their favorite chili for the title of Serenata Beach Club Chili Champion! The winner will be chosen by vote of other members and guests who attend the competition that evening. The privilege of voting is gained by a $5 or $10 donation to the St. Johns County Council on Aging. Each voter may purchase a voting ticket, which they will use to vote for their favorite entry. A member may purchase as many voting tickets as they would like - 1 vote $5; 3 votes $10. All money is donated to St. Johns County Council on Aging. The Winning Chili Chef will have their chili featured in the Serenata Serenade Newsletter & Website and their name engraved on our Chili Cup Trophy. A personal, engraved plaque will also be presented to them. Friday, January 23rd 6:00-8:00pm Local artist Tim Peterson has been a full-time plein air painter for the last several years and can often be found setting up his easel throughout historic St Augustine. While artists commonly use photographs as the basis of their paintings, Tim takes a much more organic approach to capture the subtleties of color, shadow and depth that he seeks to put on canvas. He paints primarily on linen with oil, and also creates limited edition, hand-embellished canvas giclees of his original art. He is a very prolific painter who has captured many scenes of St Augustine, including historic St George Street, Aviles Street, Hypolita Street, the St Augustine Lighthouse, Flagler College and many more areas of downtown.
