1 Columbia Restaurant & the Gonzmart Family s Wine Philosophy At the Columbia Restaurant we believe the relationship of wine and food is an essential part of the dining experience and that two aspects of elegant dining deserve specialized attention: The preparation and serving of the cuisine and the selection of the finest wines and stemware to accompany it. In keeping with our tradition of serving the most elegant Spanish dishes, we have chosen to feature a collection of Spain's finest wines and a selection of American wines, sparkling whites and Champagne. Our wines are stored in our wine cellar in a climate controlled environment at 55 Fahrenheit with 70% humidity. The Columbia Restaurant s wine list represents 4th and 5th generation, owner and operators, Richard and Andrea Gonzmart s lifetime involvement in their family s business. Their passion for providing guests the best wines from Spain, as well as their personal favorites from California, are reflected in every selection. They believe wines should be affordable and represent great value. Spanish wine is at least three thousand years old. This beautiful country with its extreme contrasts in climate, and soil produces a wide variety of wine: from delicate fine Sherries to rich dessert wine, old vintage wines to strong and hearty reds. Today, Spain s winemakers are adapting modern practices while also respecting the country s honored winemaking traditions. In addition, new wine laws inspire visionary producers to experiment with traditional and international grape varieties in regions never before known for quality or in unexplored territory. The resulting wines are rich and lively, crafted in styles that are recognizably Spanish and complement a wide range of today s cuisines. This new world of wines in an old-world setting offers fertile ground for enjoyable exportation. This wine list illustrates the depth of knowledge and concern the Gonzmart family possess, by keeping abreast of the wine market in Europe by traveling to Spain two or three times a year. Each Spanish wine region can be defined in its elevation and its proximity to the ocean or the sea. To break Spain s geography into its autonomous regions we have broken the country into climatic categories. 6

7 Understanding Spanish Wines The wines of Spain can be divided into several regions, each one very different from the rest. Each wine region can be defined in its elevation and in its proximity to the ocean or the sea. To get a more thorough understanding of the places, vineyards, grapes and styles of wines, the country can be divided into 7 climatic categories: Green Valley The Mediterranean Coast Andalucía The Islands Duero River Valley Ebro River Valley The Meseta Within these climatic categories are smaller regions referred to as denominaciónes (similar to the French appellation) whose wine is regulated for quality according to specific laws. The denominación is part of a wider hierarchy of quality-graded descriptors for Spanish wine regions, as follows (highest quality first): Denominación de Origen or DO: official classification for wines which follow strict production standards. Vino de Calidad Producido en Región Determinada or VCPRD: another official appellation system following new standards established by the European Union. Denominación de Pago ou DO de Pago: a recent classification aspiring to the very highest standards with extremely strict geographical criteria. Denominación de Origen Calificada or DOCa (Catalan: Denominació d'origen Qualificada or DOQ): another system which reflects a constant level of quality. Only used by a few appellations. Through his love of music and food and his remarkable ability to make them both magical and memorable, Cesar Gonzmart kept the spirit of the Columbia Restaurant alive. About the label: As he dined at the Columbia Restaurant, world famous artist, LeRoy Neiman, was so inspired by the performance of Cesar Gonzmart s Magic Violin that he sketched this animated portrait capturing the essence of Cesar. 12 Don Cesar Crianza 2011, Ribera del Duero 40 The core is lush with cherry and gamey flavors with a beautiful ripe fruit. 10 Adelita Adela Hernandez Gonzmart had long been admired as the Matriarch of the Columbia Restaurant and Ybor City. Her love and devotion to her family, her heritage and the arts has long been the secret to the success of the Columbia. Through Adela s culinary skills the traditional, nearly century-old recipes have continued at the Columbia Restaurant, founded in 1905 by her grandfather, Casimiro Hernandez, Sr. These wines stand in memory of our mother Adela, the wonderful woman they were made to honor. 13 Adelita Chardonnay 2015, Penedes 40 This outstanding Chardonnay is brilliant in color and a complex bouquet with good intensity. Toasty overtones derived from maturing French Oak cask. Smooth and very balanced with tones of vanilla. Produced by Jean Leon Winery in memory of our mother and grandmother, Adela Gonzmart she would have loved this bottling! 10

11 The Green Valley of Spain Green Spain has been inhabited since the dawn of time and everywhere you go you will see fragments of past civilizations. The northern and northwester portion of Spain, exposed to the northern Atlantic, can be cool to cold, wet, and green thus the name, Green Spain. This area stretches from Galicia to the Pyrenees, though only Bierzo, Monterrei and Rías Baixas are wine regions of great note in Green Spain. All the regions are joined by a double boundary, the coastline to the north with its cliffs, beaches, tiny ports and major cities and the mountain range to the south with its snow-capped peaks and hidden valleys. The cool and misty climate necessitates a focus upon earlier ripening grapes, especially white varieties. But the advantage conferred upon this sort of climate is that aromatic varieties are virtually guaranteed to be, well, aromatic. DO Bierzo DO Monterrei DO Rías Baixas DO Ribeiro DO Valdeorras 11

12 Bierzo Quality winemaking in Bierzo is too new for us to really know exactly what will happen with the area s occasionally remarkable wines. Vineyards are found as high as 2,300 feet, with a mix of chalk and clay in the elevated vineyards and alluvial soils in the lower vineyards. Bierzo s predominant local variety grape is the Mencia, descended from grapes brought by the Roman settlers and widely regarded as the immediate precursor to the Cabernet Franc. Nearly all of the vines are over 30 years old, with a preponderance of vines over 100 years old. 73 White Wine Val De Paxarinas Capricho % Godello and 15% Dona Blanca. An expressive nose with aromas of pear, peach, apple and citric notes. Spicy herbal notes on a mineral background. Fresh and fruity with marked acidity. Red Wine 539 Castro Ventosa El Castro de Valtuille Fresh on the nose, with notes of fine wood, mixed with chocolate and fruity aromas. On the palate it shows some wild berries with minerality and a good structure, fine and fresh tannins. 885 Altos de Losada This rich red is complex, combining mineral shades and earth with the delicate taste of fruit. It is very ample on the palate with volume, well integrated tannins and a hint of oak in the background. Mature and noble. 291 wild Akilia Chano Villar Fermented and aged for 9 months in cement vats. 100% Mencia. On the nose lots of berries, some leather and herbs. Medium bodied, supple and drinkable. 278 Akilia Lombano

Full of forest fruits, with touches of spice and leather. 867 Tres Picos Garnacha Old vine Garnacha grown on the rugged slopes of Moncayo mountain. Low yield vineyards produce a deeply colored and aromatic wine with concentrated flavors of blackberry, strawberry and nuances of leather, vanilla and plum. Bierzo Red Wine 858 Casar de Burbia A lovely texture carries appealing flavors of plum, fig, licorice and dark chocolate. A blend of Mencia and Garnacha grapes. 737 Senorio de Otazu 60 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Tempranillo. Aged 18 months in French Oak. Offers up a Bordeaux like bouquet of wood smoke, ciolets and savory currants. Considerable elegance and great structure. 95 Dominio de Tares Pago

14 Rich and structured, yet still expressive. Lavishly oaked, with toast and coffee notes, this red still showcases its wild berry and ripe plum fruit flavors on a plush, velvety structure. 500 cases made. 14

15 Rías Baixas (The Wine of the Sea) The Southwestern part of the region of Galicia (just north of Portugal, along the Atlantic coast), is where green, misty hills are punctuated by sharply defined estuaries. Rias Baixas, is a home to a superb wine region called Rías Baixas. This is the area from which the famed Albariño wines come from. Albariño, considered a native vine of Galicia has impressed the wine world with its delicate and aromatic fruit. White Wine 114 La Val Albarino Sur Lies Intense complex and pleasant aromas of white ripe fruits, flowers, balsamic notes, grapefruit and a mineral backbone. Perfumed fruit flavors cover the palate with balsamic citurs notes. 107 La Val Albarino Barrel Fermented Very aromatic with good balance between fruit and oak. Shows aromas of candy, coconut, vanilla, and toasted notes as well as peach, green apple and citurs fruits. A fresh creamy finish with toasted no tes from it s time in the barrel. 866 Salneval Albariño Apple and peach flavors mingle with butter, almond and herbal notes in this thick, soft white. There s just enough acidity for balance. 26 Mar de Frades Albarino Intense with golden hues. Floral aromas over tropical fruit background and distinctive notes of apple and pear. 60 Condado Do Tea Mas Que On the nose floral and fruity notes and fresh herbs. Citrus and creamy aromas typical of 15

16 Albarino. On the palate fresh and balanced. Minerality and zesty citrus notes on the finish. 24 Licia Albariño Hints of grapefruit, candied fruit, quince jelly, notes of fresh hebs, green apples and minerals. It is full bodied and well balanced, highlighting the aroma of citrus and green apple, with a persistent finish. 88 Pazo Das Bruxas Albariño An intensely aromatic wine displaying distinctive fruit notes of green apple and lemon peel with clean undert ones of hay. Valdeorras Valderooas is the eastern most wine zone in Galicia. It is situated in the province of Orense and covers an area of 1400 hectares. Garnacha and the white Palomino, as well as the indigenous, white Godello grape, are extensively planted. If carefully vinified, the wines can be aromatic with a alcoholic strength between 12 and 13%. Prior to the phylloxera epidemic of the 19th century, the indigenous Godello vine was heavily planted and is only just recently starting to make a comeback in the region. The Mencia grape is also starting to gain gro und due to the fruity and easy drinking red wines that it produces. The Valdeorras wine region consists of 43 vineyards (Bodegas), which produce 4 million liters of wine annually. 16

17 White Wine 886 Rafafel Palacios As Sortes This white shows precision and energy, with bracing acidity fueling focused flavors of pear, heather mineral and smoke. Seamless and lively, with alluring stony and floral notes that mingle beautifully on the long, fresh finish. 33 Avancia Godello % Godello. Bright straw color in the glass with fresh aromas of white flowers and expressive fruit. Flavorful palate with fruity characateristics. Good acidity and balance. Pear, blanched almonds, ginger and mineral flavors. 90 points, Wine Spectator 17

18 The Duero River Valley of Spain The Duero River Valley has been the seat of power for much of Spain s history. The area hosts extremely elevated but very workable vineyards. Vega Sicilia and Pesquera are two of the famous Spanish wineries residing in the Duero River Valley. Other upstart sub-regions, such as Toro and Rueda are on the short lists of anyone trying to keep up with emerging Spanish brands. The Duero valley averages about 2600 ft. above sea level which makes for a relatively short growing season. Temperatures reach extremes during the season, with very hot summer days up to 104 but then falls sharply at night. These extremes however, seem to be a positive factor when it comes to making high quality wine. It is widely believed that these conditions combine with the mountain air of the Duero to help Tinto Fino to retain more acidity than Tempranillo wines from other parts of Spain, and thereby provide the resulting wines with great structure and longevity. 19 Castilla y León In Castilla y León the land devoted to vineyards decreased greatly in the last three decades of the 20th century. Thanks to adoption of more modern techniques, the 56,337 hectares (139,210 acres) currently devoted to vineyards are turning out vastly better wines than those the region traditionally produced. Now rivaling in quality the wines of La Rioja, they are increasingly known even beyond the borders of Spain. 608 Tridente Rejon Tempranillo from 130 year old vines. Vibrant, seductively perfumed aromas of blackberry, violet candy, star anise and cracked pepper. Dark berry flavors are brightened by smoky minerals. 91 Points ~ Stephen Tanzer 622 black Tridente Prieto Picudo % Prieto Picudo. A cool driven bouquet shows scents of red and dark berries, violet, sassafras and licorice, with a blast of black pepper. Lively but deep with tangy red and currant flavors, along with notes of cola and vanilla. 15 months in French oak. 91 Points ~ Stephen Tanzer 624 Tridente Tempranillo % Tempranillo. Sexy oaked spiced berries, cola and vanilla on the perfumed nose. Offering intense black and blue fruit flavors that become livelier with air. Finishes sweet and seamless, with echoing cola and blue fruit notes. 91 Points ~ Stephen Tanzer Cigales High above sea level in the region of Castilla y León, Cigales is ideally suited to growing Tempranillo, Garnacha and Verdejo grapes. Red wine production has increased as producers in the area have begun to emulate those in the Duero Valley. The climate is hot and dry in the summer, wet and cool in winter. The19vineyards are planted at an average altitude

20 of around 2,500 ft. Much of the soil consists of limestone beneath large, flat rocks that retain heat. This soil composition is often considered to be ideal for Tempranillo or Tinto del País as it is known locally. Red Wine 732 Cesar Principe Culled from 100% old vine Tinto del Pais (Tempranillo), the wine was raised in all new oak yet it is absorbed by the wealth of black fruit. Ribera del Duero The region is about two hours north of Madrid in the province of Castilla and León, stretching sixty eight miles along the banks of the Duero River. The original grapes were cultivated and made by the Romans. The D.O. is home to Spain s most famous wineries, Vega Sicilia and Pesquera. The grape most used is the local Tinto País (Tempranillo). This region, too, has seen some amazing changes in the past decade. Ribera del Duero has enjoyed official appellation status only since 1982, but growth in the area has been phenomenal. Quality is such that Ribera del Duero is challenging Rioja, aiming to become the country's premier red-wine region. The grape of Ribera del Duero is the Tinto Fino, a local clone of Tempranillo, although Cabernet, Malbec, and Merlot are also allowed within the appellation. Ribera del Duero is often more tannic and linear than its cousin, Rioja. 20

21 Featured Wine Maker Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Alejandro Fernandez personifies the mercurial 10th-Century Spanish experience. Since 1982, fermentation has been de-stemmed whole berries only, maceration varying from 12 to 20 days. The unclarified wine goes directly to small oak after pressing. Barricas are an astute blend of American, Spanish and French oak, custom-cured and made in Spain s finest coopers. Filtration and cold stabilization are not practiced. Wines produced by Alejandro Fernández are made exclusively from the difficult, quick-maturing Tempranillo variety, of which he is the acknowledged master. We are very proud of their friendship and the relationship we formed over the years. Red Wine Pesquera 21

22 In 1972 Alejandro and his wife, Esperanza, licensed their bodega in the town of Pesquera in Ribera del Duero. The estate now has over 500 acres of mature vineyards, situated on a variety of different soils. Vinification includes total de-stemming, maceration for up to twenty days and maturation in small oak barrels. The wines are neither filtered nor cold-stabilized. 826 fresh 854 Tinto Pesquera Reserva Elegant mineral and black fruit with subtle wood spice on the nose. Silky m outh-feel, And long with lingering minerality. 24 month in American Oak. Tinto Pesquera months in aok. Beautifully balanced with ripe, rich fruit and smooth subtle oak. Excellent structure and length. 589 Tinto Pesquera Open with a plum and leather bouquet with a hint of rose. Medium-bodied, nicely balanced and juicy. The flavor profile is cedar plank, infused red raspberry and cherry with hints of pomegranate and touch of clove. 851 Pesquera Crianza % Tempranillo filled with classic notes of cherry, eucalyptus, garrique, supporting a ripe palate of black fruits and spice. The expansive finish carries the fruit notes through, with hints of herb and licorice. 92 Points, James Suckling 868 Pesquera Millenum Gran Reserva Very complex nose, with notes of mixed berries and licorice wrapped in sleek oaky vanilla and roasted coffee. The palate is fine and elegant with impressive smoothness. This wine is only produced in years of outstanding grape quality. 22

23 503 Millennium Reserva Liter 550 This inky red is plush and mouthfilling, with an amazing concentration of plum, boysenberry, chocolate and licorice flavors over muscular yet graceful tannins. It is thoroughly modern in style, yet remains deeply rooted in its terroir. 95 points, Wine Spectator. Ribera del Duero Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Featured Wine Maker Janus The 1982 vintage was one of the best in living memory. This lead Alejandro Fernández to carrying out a unique experience: making two different wines from the same grape. The first wine, which was made in the traditional way, was only sold in Spain. The second, however, was the first Pesquera wine to be exported and opened up the way to the winery s world-wide renown in the wine world. But Alejandro wanted to go just a little bit further. He mixed the last 2,000 liters of each kind of wine in equal measures and placed the resulting wine to rest for three years in old American oak barrels. The end result was a totally unique, extraordinarily complex and balanced wine bottled in 1986 that was different from the rest. The wine was named Janus after the Roman god of doors, thresholds (arrivals and departures), communication routes and anything that has a beginning. Janus is a two-faced god who looks towards both the past and the future, just like the wine that carries his name and merges together ancient and modern winemaking techniques perfectly while revealing the best of each. 23

This powerhouse red is young with loads of vibrant red fruity flavors and notes of violets and cedar. Highly allocated! 506 Janus Gran Reserva 2003, Pesquera 200 Saddle leather and musty black currants on the nose. Medium bodied, balanced, smooth and unique. The flavor profile is an old oak and leather, influenced by spicy plum with notes of thyme and black pepper. 492 Janus Gran Reserva 1995, Pesquera 190 Vanilla and coffee flavors are rich and dominant in this lush red. 25 Condado de Haza The Condado de Haza estate includes 500 acres of prime tempranillo vines. Encompassed within the historic county of the hilltop village Haza, high above the opposite bank of the Duero River, the Condado de Haza reflects Alejandro s bold winemaking style. 140 and Alenza Full-textured and powerful, finishing dry with intense fruit concentration. Acid, alcohol dry extract combine for round and rich flavour, the abundant tannins becoming more refined with additional aging. Fruit and fine oak return on the finish, which is lingering and persistent. 182 baked Alenza Cedar and spice aromas are fragrant and alluring in this maturing red. 40 Ribera del Duero Featured Winery Vega Sicilia In 1864, Eloy Lecanda founded the winery that symbolizes the golden legend of Spanish red wine. Throughout its long history, this winery has belonged to different owners, but has always maintained an unquestionable personality, making concentrated, mature, generous and extremely elegant wines. In 1982, El Enebro S.A., a company owned by the Álvarez Mezquíriz family, acquired the winery and the vineyards from the Venezuelan businessman Miguel Neumann. From that year onwards, the family, with David Álvarez and his children Pablo, Jesús David, María José, Emilio, Juan Carlos, Elvira and Marta, have developed a policy of harmonization of present innovative techniques required by the wine sector with the traditional winemaking process. The vineyard area has been extended and the vineyards and vines, which were almost half a century old, have continued to be planted in rotation. This legendary bodega along the Duero River remains in a class by itself. Vega Sicilia s red wines have garnered awards, critical praise and high prices ever since the grapes were first planted on the estate in The varietal mix is usually 60% Temparnillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Malbec. Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia It is no secret that Vega Sicilia has been working for a number of years on a new wine from Toro, the next big thing in Spanish red wine appellations. Known to some under the codename ALQUIRIZ, the wine (and winery) finally has a definitive name. PINTIA. The Vega group began researching the area in 1997, with experimental vinifications and judicious purchases of top vineyard sites, half of which are already planted with mature 25 to 45 year old vines. The estate now possesses 96 hectares of land, including a state-of-the-art vinification and ageing facility. The 2001 vintage is the first judged worthy of release, in a limited quantity of 80,000 bottles. 609 Pintia Black cherry, coffee and mineral notes mingle in this solid red. 64 Tudela de Duero Featured Winery Bodegas Mauro In October 2001 in my travels visiting the great wineries of Spain one of the highlights was discovering this jewel located in the Duero river valley at Tudela. Located a few miles from the city of Valladolid but due to be it s geographical a location and local politics Mauro does not qualify for the Ribera del Duero DO. But it didn t matter as this small producer of only about 160,000 bottles earned wide world reputation for it quality in a contemporary style, sort of like the super Tuscan reds from Italy. Mauro was a creation in the 70 s of Luciano Suarez, an architect Felix Choque, cousin of the famed winemaker Mariano Garcia of Vega Sicilia fame. Mariano has always been the spiritual force behind the winery with his sons taking over the day to day operations and winemaking here. The super rare and delicious Terreus is only produced in outstanding years with a maximum production of 8,000 bottles. 566 Vendimia Seleccionada Liter 295 Suave yet intense, this alluring red marries a velvety texture with focused flavors of blackberry, cassis and bitter chocolate. On palate the wine has a sweet attack, it is full-bodied with big and jammy fruit, ripe and packed tannins, and a lot of nuances. Deep and exuberant. 569 Terreus Terreus Terreus Rich yet firm, concentrated yet balanced, this graceful red is packed with flavors of plum, blackberry, espresso, mineral, licorice and toast. The tannins are muscular but there's plenty of fruit. 3 Liter % Tempranillo, 5% Granacha. This wine is opulent, concentrated and supple. Shows a very pure nose. 66

67 Sardón del Duero Sardón del Duero has a long history of winemaking. As far back as 2,000 years ago, there is strong evidence of grape growing and winemaking by the Romans. Located just outside of the more famous region of Ribera del Duero, the wines of Sardón del Duero are also based around Tinto Fino and traditional Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Sardón del Duero does not benefit from the constancy of climate in the Southern part of the country and experienced dramatic shifts in temperatures and climatic conditions throughout the year. The winters are quite cold, with temperatures as low as 64 Fahrenheit, and the summers are hot and very dry, with lower than average rainfall than the rest of Spain. Altitude is between 750 and 950 meters and the soil is made up of clay alternated in many parts by sheets of limestone and harder chalk. Red Wine 487 Bodegas Abadia Retuerta Rivola This wine arises from a careful selection of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the best plots on the Abadia estate. Aging for twelve months in casks highlights its unique character. Its personality makes it a pleasant, warm, complex wine, perfect for tasting and drinking any time. 489 Bodegas Abadia Retuerta Cuvée El Palomar A 50/50 blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. 69 Rueda While red wines are produced here it s only the white wines that matter. Indeed, it s one vine in particular, Verdejo, which produces wines of great crispness and occasionally of wonderful richness and texture. Other white grapes are grown here as well: Viura is used for blending; Sauvignon Blanc is utilized for aromatics; and Palomino is grown here because, not so long ago, Rueda wines were all rancio in style, and the oxidized style lent itself better to the Palomino grape. But Marques de Riscal, assisted by Emile Peynaud, led a charge to create a fresh white wine and saw an affinity between the grapes Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viura. Others have been emboldened by Verdejo s success, and many believe that Verdejo deserves to be seen on its own. White Wine 54 Aura Verdejo Sparkling yellow in color with greenish hues. 72 Toro Toro is located further along the Duero River. This once forgotten DO is exploding. Manuel Fariña brought it to prominence a few decades ago with excellent wines at fantastic prices, and seemingly everyone with an ego and a fat wallet has decided to try their hand as well. The massive character of Toro s full, plush and sometimes overpowering Tempranillo-based wine is the result of the warm conditions, ideal exposures, and very friable soils. But the elevation, as with Spain s other top spots, gives the wine structure, relative elegance, and, it is hoped, ageability. The word Toro means bull and it aptly describes the robust character of these reds. Toro may be the next big thing for Spanish wine. 973 with White Wine Castillo Monte La Reina Verdjo The nose reveals smoky, toasty notes with fruity abd balsamic hints c oming through. The area attained its D.O. status on July 27th, Grape cultivation was probably introduced by the ancient Romans. The area benefited from being at the crossroads of two important routes: The Way of Saint James, the pilgrimage route running east to west from France to Santiago de Compostela, 76

77 and the Ruta de la Plata, running north south between the silver mines of the Cantabrian coast and the southern port of Cadiz. Around the 10th century, the main economic activities of the region were cereal production and milling, along with grape growing and winemaking, which was practiced in the monasteries of different religious orders. Production increased steadily over the centuries until 1887 which is when the phylloxera virus destroyed most of the vineyards of the area. Production did not pick up again until the 1920s. In 1985, a group of producers applied for DO status based on the promotion of the local autochthonous grape variety known as Prieto picudo. Today, thank to Alejandro Fernandez, Zamora is producing concentrated full bodied red wines. 79 The Ebro River Valley of Spain The Ebro River Valley is where the Cantabrian Mountains, or the Sierra de Cantábria, are located. Mountains shelter some of Spain s most important vineyards, including those in Rioja and Navara. Farther south, Calatayud, Campo de Borja and Cariñena offer great value, and to the east, the Pyrenees are mostly forgotten for wine growing. The only DO immediately south of the Pyrenees is Somontano where the rare Moristel grape is charming some with its easy ways, along with Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and others. The hills, valleys, nooks, and crannies among the mountains hold nearly endless opportunity. For now, the money is on Rioja, the traditional area of quality, and Navarra, the traditional area of quantity. In the foothills of the Sistem Ibérico, the less-known and limestone-rich DO s of Campo de Borja, Calatayud, and Cariñena offer great value, if only from a handful of focused producers at the moment. And to the east, Somontano, too is starting to look like a sure thing. 81 Getaruako Txakolina This DO was created in 1990 and covers around 200 hectares of vineyards, down from over 100 hectares at the turn of the century. However, wine had been traditionally made in this manner for hundreds of years and was popular from the middle ages up to the end of the 19 century, when wines were devastated by phylloxera. Garnacha, the workhorse rosé grape now is less than 40% of plantings, compared with 90% in the 1980's. Its place has been taken by the Spanish Tempranillo, and, equally excitingly, by84cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Now, after a

The ancient style of Rioja exemplified by oxidative red, white and rosé wines, may not be to everyone s taste, but the mode remains legitimate, if unusual. The more modern school, with labels that came forward in the 1960 s to the 1980 s, emphasizes time in oak for other reasons; these wines seek supple expressions and softer structures. And the new internationalist schools are in full effect in Rioja; there are plenty of producers with powerful wines, inky-dark and joltingly tannic with new French oak. These are low yielding vineyards, with production levels of around kg/ha. After destalking, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks, at temperatures no higher than 91.4 Fahrenheit. Following a long maceration to achieve optimum color and structure, the wine passes to malolactic fermentation, to refine the wine, and to leave it with the correct acidity. 102 Rioja Featured Winery Bodegas Marqués de Murrieta Rioja s oldest winery started in 1825 when the first grapes were planted at the estate of Ygay. Murrieta makes three levels of red wines. So well respected is Enrique Mendoza that it was inducted into the prestigious Grandes Pagos de Espana. It is aged in all French oak for 14 months, half new, half one year old. A touch closed, with possibly the merest touch of reduction, this would benefit from decanting or aerating. Lovely blackberry nose emerges, with a beautiful juiciness and touches of earth and charcoal, and some very attractive violet notes. The palate has such fine, ripe, pure black fruit. It has a juiciness and a lean, muscular, very structured palate bit with masses of black fruit at its core, and such good, tight, supple tannins. Good acidity too, with a really clean, racy finish. The family has a long tradition of winemakers, but with new and fresh ideas.
