2 Assyrtiko Assyrtiko is Greece s most striking white grape. It hails from the Cyclades island of Santorini and other Aegean islands, such as Paros and Tinos, as well as the island of Crete, It is also found on other scattered regions of Greece such as Attica, Macedonia and the Peloponnese. In Santorini many vines are non-grafted and vary in age from 30 to 150 years. On this windswept volcanic island the roots of the Assyrtiko vine can reach up to 60 feet in the black, ash-rich soil, giving the resulting wines great minerality. The vines are uniquely trained in ground-hugging, basket-weaved fashion to minimize wind damage during spring as well as grape sunburn in summer. Maritime humidity and fog contribute to small rainfall, in this improbable winemaking location. Different villages on this island result in varied styles. Wines classified as Santorini are bone-dry, in-your-face, crisp, mineral-laden, high-acid wonders. 4 Aidani Aidani is a white Greek wine grape variety that is grown primarily on the island of Santorini but it can also be found in other Aegean islands. The grape is known for its discreet nose, with hints of yellow fruits, minerality and flowers. On the palate is medium bodied, with moderate alcohol and moderate acidity. Usually, Aidani is blended with Assyrtiko, because it has the unique ability to provide roundness and floral complexity to the blend, without interfering with the majestic minerality and texture of a typical PDO Santorini. Nonetheless, the rare bottlings of pure Aidani are exquisite and worth hunting for. Aidani is mainly found in Cyclades. 5 Asprouda Asprouda of Serres is considered by the winery, located in Serres, Macedonia, as a variety having nothing in common with the other Asprouda in Greece which is like a generic name meaning whitish. ''Wine Grapes'' states that this name has been given to several distinct white varieties all over Greece with viticulturist Dr. Haroula Spinthiropoulou commenting that growers use the name for just about any unidentified light berried variety. Following the efforts by the winery the variety is now listed as an official Greek variety. Nerantzi started vinifying it since 2007 with the first commercial release in Asprouda of Serres, Domaine Nerantzi, Serres, Debina Debina is a white wine grape variety, delicate and crispy. Its origins are located in the beautiful Zitsa of Ioannina, where it is grown on the hilltops of the six villages in the famous Wine Region of Zitsa. 7 Monemvasia Monemvasia Probably originated in the eponymous port in Laconia in the Peloponnese and was used to make Malvasia, for centuries Greece s is best known exported wine. When trade decline in the early 18th century, however, vineyards in the region were abandoned and only revived very recently, when Theodorerakakos and Malvasia Winery began replanting the variety with promising results. It is now known that the one in Monemvasia grape is not related to the Malvasia varieties, although this was a common assumption in the past. 8 Malagousia Malagousia was rescued from virtual extinction in the 1970s by Professor Logothetis of Thessaloniki University, who collected vines from Nafpaktos, Central Greece and planted them in his experimental vineyard in Porto Carras, on the middle of the three fingers of the Halkidiki peninsula. The variety s potential was spotted by Vangelis Gerovassiliou, who was the young oenologist at Porto Carras winery from the mid-1970s. In the 80s, Roxane Matsa and one or two others began to propagate it further and the variety has since spread to many parts of Greece; there are now more than 300ha. Depending on vineyard site and practices, it can produce a range of styles: from fresh, aromatic and delicate, suitable for drinking young, to more fullbodied wines, vinified at least partly in barrel. Malagousia s distinctive aromas, ranging from basil, lime and citrus to exotic fruits, are prone to oxidation and care is needed in the winery. The name Malvasia is from a Greek port bearing the same title, from where it is thought to have made its ancient voyage to the Apennine peninsula. From bush vines, this has a lifted nose, a touch more aromatic than Malvasia di Candia. Very discrete though but still perfumed with lime blossom and jasmine and a nice touch of ripeness. 9 Moscato After the ancient times, the first mention of Samian wine comes in the 12th century. A monk named Theodurus wrote in a poem: they drink sweet wine from Crete and from Samos. He did not mention if the wine came from Muscat vines. It is true that sweet wine can come from other vine varieties as well. The Samian Muscat originally came from Asia Minor. It was brought to Samos at the end of the 16th century. Samian Muscat became well known after phylloxera destroyed many European vineyards. With their vineyards destroyed, French and Italian winemakers had to look for alternatives in eastern Europe and one of the those alternatives turned out to be Samian Muscat wine. The noblest sort of Muscat is that with small, pale yellow-skinned berries, known in French as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and in Spanish as Moscatel de Grano Menudo. In Italy it may be called Moscato d'asti, Moscato di Canelli or simply Moscato Bianco. 10 Roditis Roditis is a pink-skinned grape variety and one of the most widely planted grape varieties in Greece. Despite its pink grape color, Roditis is cultivated for the production of white wines. It is grown throughput the Greek mainland. In Peloponnese, it is strongly associated with Patras vineyards, while it is also significant in the vineyards of Anhialos and Cotes de Meliton in Chalkidiki. Across locations, Roditis is usually blended with other local or international grape varieties. 11 Tsaoussi Tsaoussi is a white-skinned grape variety grown mainly on the Ionian island of Cephalonia. Varietal examples are rare as Tsaoussi is more often blended with other local or international grape varieties adding an aromatic complexity to the blend. 14 Agiorgitiko Agiorgitiko, sometimes known as Agiorgitiko or St. George, is a red grape variety native to Greece. Agiorgitiko is the most widely planted and among the most commercially successful. The grape s origins lie in Nemea, a region in the Peloponnese peninsula, though it is widely grown elsewhere in Greece, too. There are only a limited number of wineries who work with this variety: Mercouri, and Brintziki from Pyrgos, cross from the island of Zakynthos as well as Tinos Vineyards from Tinos Island. 17 Limnio Limnio is a variety that manifests, beyond any question, the potential depth of the New Wines of Greece in today s wine world. It is a grape first mentioned by numerous Ancient Greek writers such as Homer, Hesiod and Polydefkis, making it a unique artifact of ancient viticulture. Nevertheless, this red variety, used to make dry red wines, is still important today, even in areas where it has been cultivated since the distant Limnio wine is moderate in color, elegant in aromas and flavors, dominated by fresh, aromatic herbs and elegant, red berry fruits.
