2 Assyrtiko Assyrtiko is Greece s most striking white grape. It hails from the Cyclades island of Santorini and other Aegean islands, such as Paros and Tinos, as well as the island of Crete, It is also found on other scattered regions of Greece such as Attica, Macedonia and the Peloponnese. In Santorini many vines are non-grafted and vary in age from 30 to 150 years. On this windswept volcanic island the roots of the Assyrtiko vine can reach up to 60 feet in the black, ash-rich soil, giving the resulting wines great minerality. The vines are uniquely trained in ground-hugging, basket-weaved fashion to minimize wind damage during spring as well as grape sunburn in summer. Maritime humidity and fog contribute to small rainfall, in this improbable winemaking location. Different villages on this island result in varied styles. 4 Aidani Aidani is a white Greek wine grape variety that is grown primarily on the island of Santorini but it can also be found in other Aegean islands. The grape is known for its discreet nose, with hints of yellow fruits, minerality and flowers. On the palate is medium bodied, with moderate alcohol and moderate acidity. Usually, Aidani is blended with Assyrtiko, because it has the unique ability to provide roundness and floral complexity to the blend, without interfering with the majestic minerality and texture of a typical PDO Santorini. ''Wine Grapes'' states that this name has been given to several distinct white varieties all over Greece with viticulturist Dr. Haroula Spinthiropoulou commenting that growers use the name for just about any unidentified light berried variety. 8 Malagousia Malagousia was rescued from virtual extinction in the 1970s by Professor Logothetis of Thessaloniki University, who collected vines from Nafpaktos, Central Greece and planted them in his experimental vineyard in Porto Carras, on the middle of the three fingers of the Halkidiki peninsula. The variety s potential was spotted by Vangelis Gerovassiliou, who was the young oenologist at Porto Carras winery from the mid-1970s. In the 80s, Roxane Matsa and one or two others began to propagate it further and the variety has since spread to many parts of Greece; there are now more than 300ha. 9 Moscato After the ancient times, the first mention of Samian wine comes in the 12th century. A monk named Theodurus wrote in a poem: they drink sweet wine from Crete and from Samos. He did not mention if the wine came from Muscat vines. It is true that sweet wine can come from other vine varieties as well. The Samian Muscat originally came from Asia Minor. It was brought to Samos at the end of the 16th century. Samian Muscat became well known after phylloxera destroyed many European vineyards. With their vineyards destroyed, French and Italian winemakers had to look for alternatives in eastern Europe and one of the those alternatives turned out to be Samian Muscat wine. The noblest sort of Muscat is that with small, pale yellow-skinned berries, known in French as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and in Spanish as Moscatel de Grano Menudo. 10 Roditis Roditis is a pink-skinned grape variety and one of the most widely planted grape varieties in Greece. Despite its pink grape color, Roditis is cultivated for the production of white wines. 17 Limnio Limnio is a variety that manifests, beyond any question, the potential depth of the New Wines of Greece in today s wine world. It is a grape first mentioned by numerous Ancient Greek writers such as Homer, Hesiod and Polydefkis, making it a unique artifact of ancient viticulture. Nevertheless, this red variety, used to make dry red wines, is still important today, even in areas where it has been cultivated since the distant Limnio wine is moderate in color, elegant in aromas and flavors, dominated by fresh, aromatic herbs and elegant, red berry fruits. On the palate it displays medium acidity, medium and very silky tannins, breadth, and moderately high alcohol. Surprisingly, Limnio is present but not very important on the island of Lemnos, considered its birthplace, its local name on the island is Kalambaki, Instead, the majority of its vineyards are found in northern Greece. A typical red from Mandilari boasts a characteristically deep dark red color, vibrant fruity nose, strong tannins and high acidity. Vlachiko yields dry red wines that are mostly oak aged and although mostly found in blends, as of recently it is vinified alone with promising results.
