White wine natives Assyritiko An indigenous grape to the island of Santorini. Now cultivated on volcanic ash rich soil across the Aegean islands. Produces many both dry and sweet wines. Aidani Aidani is another ancient Greek grape variety and is mainly found in the Cyclades Islands. It produces wines pleasantly aromatic with medium alcoholic content and acidity. It can be successfully mixed with grapes having a high alcoholic content and acidity such as Assyrtiko. Roditis A pink skinned grape traditionally cultivated in the Peleponnese. It is mostly an elegant light white wine with citrus flavours. Malagousia A blanc skin this ancient grape was virtually extinct until the late 20th century where it was cultivated again to be used in varietal wine production. The grape is highly aromatic and produces soft elegant wines. Moschofilero Moschofilero is an aromatic white grape with a rosy hue and quite spicy flavor with good acidity. Grown throughout much of Greece but especially in the Peleponnese where it is used to make a dry and bold wine with lots of spice and perfume. Can have similar characteristics to the Muscat. The Moscofilero ripens late and can have problems with hot weather. Plyto, Vilana, Dafni These are traditional varieties native to Crete. The Dafni and Plyto were nearly extinct until re cultivated by Lyrarakis. Dafni is the Greek for laurel wose aromas resemble fresh herbs and green plums. Plyto is complex green fruit and the Vilana as a touch of spice.

10 Retsina The unique flavour was acquired using the principle of sealing amphorae with pine resin to preserve wines in Ancient Greece. This process has been dated back as far as 6000 BC to the Zagros Mountains in Iran. Red wine natives Agiorgitiko Also known as St George or Mavro Nemeas from the region Nemea in the Peleponesse where it is chiefly cultivated. It is one of the two widely grown heat resistant grapes. It can take on a wide range of characteristics from soft to very tannic. Mavrotragano A mysterious little known indigenous red grape of Santorini which has notes of Pinot Noir or Nebbioli but characteristics of its own. Until 1995 it has been relatively unknown. Kotsifali Kotsifali is a native to Crete with dark stone fruit, spice and soft silky tannins. Xinomavro The most noblest and most planted of indigenous Greek grapes cultivated mainly in Northern Greece, chiefly around Naoussa. Its grape is of medium size with a thick skin of a blue-black colour, and colourless flesh with a sweet and slightly sharp taste. Its harvest starts after 20 September.
