With no small thanks to you, 2018 was an incredible year for us at St. Julian. We opened up two new tasting rooms, one in Troy and one in Rockford, for a total of 6 locations across the beautiful state of Michigan. We are excited for the chance to bring Pure Lake Michigan Shore wines directly to more communities and introducing our award-winning wines to new Wine Club members. Speaking of awards, we continue to produce the highest quality wines for you to enjoy. This past year, we won more than 200 medals in national and international wine competitions, taking home some of the highest honors possible. No matter your taste preference, we have award winning Pure Michigan wines for you to enjoy; something many wineries can t say. As we look to the future, we are excited about the fresh things planned for 2019; including a members reward program, adventurous exclusive trips, fun events in all rooms and new wines created from new varietals and blends. You can expect stellar new vintages of some of your favorite wines; in addition to, fresh new never-before-made wines. We look forward to our first Marsanne coming out this year; as well as, a new Winemaker s series featuring blends, both dry and sweet just for Wine Club. In our commitment to producing the finest quality Pure Michigan wines, we have more new varietals being planted this spring; including Grenache and Barbera. New varietals harvested and new ones going in the ground require more space in the winery. To accomdate our growth, we are increasing our tank space again with another 12 new stainless tanks. Now we will have plenty of space to bring in the new juice and continue to be innovative in the wines we make for you! 2019 promises to be a fantastic year and we want to thank you for going on this journey with us. Your support and friendship is at the heart of what we do and we are honored to have you as part of our family!

SPOTLIGHT ON BR MERITAGE The word meritage is a combination of the words merit and heritage and thus, the pronunciation rhymes with heritage.

Due to strict regulations, no single grape can make up more than 90% of the blend.

Meritage wines are prized for their smooth, silky texture and complex structure.

2 SPOTLIGHT ON BR MERITAGE The word meritage is a combination of the words merit and heritage and thus, the pronunciation rhymes with heritage. Meritage is a blended wine that uses two or more of the noble Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, St. Macaire, Cros Verdot or Carmenère. Due to strict regulations, no single grape can make up more than 90% of the blend. Since only wines from the French region of Bordeaux may use the name Bordeaux, the name Meritage was created to designate wines made in a similar fashion using the same distinguished varietals. Meritage wines are prized for their smooth, silky texture and complex structure. In order to ensure that the wine meets all the requirements of this prestigious name, the word Meritage is trademarked; requiring St. Julian to pay a licensing fee to guarantee quality. The 2016 Braganini Reserve Meritage is a blend of 58% Cabernet Franc, 31% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon. For this bottling, Nancie chose these 3 varietals to play off each other for very distinct reasons. Using grapes sourced from our growers in the Lake Michigan Shore Appellation, she knew the distinct flavor nuances of each varietal like the back of her hand. Through blending, components of each grape were allowed to merge, producing a wonderful new expression in the finished wine. Cabernet Franc is the dominate varietal and adds spicy earthiness and bright red fruit flavors to the blend. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone, adding rich tannins; while Merlot gives a round fruit character with a hint of dark berry and chocolate flavors. Combined, you have a beautifully balanced wine. This is one to cellar for years to come or not. Drink one today and save one for later! NATIVE ROOT RED & ROSĖ At St. Julian, we love creating delicious new wines for our sweet drinkers. As Wine Club members, you have exclusive access to our new release wines, long before anyone else. Often times you are the only ones to get them before they sell out! We are pleased to present 2 new sweet wines made exclusively for members for the month of February: Native Root Red and Native Root Rose. Long before European settlers arrived in North America, wild grapes grew along the shores and forests of our region. From these wild and rowdy native roots, known as vitis labrusca, grapes were cultivated that produced intensely sweet and foxy flavors. Native Root Red is a celebration of CONCORD, one of the most loved and popular of these original varietals. Enjoy this sweet red with spicy seafood, cheddar cheese, pears, figs, or our favorite; chocolate truffles. Not only did Concord vines flourish in this Native American soil, but another vitis labrusca grape varietal grew that produced intensely sweet and slightly spicy flavors. Native Root Rosé is a celebration of CATAWBA, one of the most interesting of these original varietals. Although technically a red grape, Catawba produces white and pink wines due to a lower concentration of flavonoids; the chemical in grapes that gives color. This sweet rose is perfect with BBQ, crab, chicken, Swiss cheese, cherries, and French fries. Get back to your roots with the fresh grape flavors of these two new Wine Club exclusives!

3 ASK WINEMAKER NANCIE s I ve heard so much about tannins in wine. What are they? Becka L. in Dowagiac, MI Tannins are naturally occurring compounds found in plants, seeds, bark, wood, leaves and fruit skins. You can find tannins in many foods, like tea, dark chocolate, berries, grapes, nuts, cinnamon and clove. As a wine characteristic, tannin adds both a bitterness and astringency, as well as, complexity to the finished product. It also creates a drying effect in your mouth. The best way to recognize tannin is to brew a cup of strong black tea for a few minutes longer than recommended. Take a sip and you will immediately notice a slight bitterness in the middle of your tongue and a dryness in the front of your mouth. That s tannin! MEMBERS OF ST. Tannins are extremely helpful during the winemaking process because they act as antioxidants to keep the wine from spoiling. Many people think tannins in red wines give them headaches. The jury is still out if there is truly a connection between headaches and tannin. It s more likely that you get headaches from histamines in the wine or simply drinking too much. If you get headaches when you consume dark chocolate, nuts, berries and tea, it could be tannins. If not; it s probably something else. Two of the most esteemed competitions, the Jefferson Cup Invitational and the San Francisco International, continue to give us great exposure outside of our region. WINE & MOVIES SNUGGLE IN FOR THE WINTER WITH THESE FAVORITES Now as the holidays are over and winter is still hanging on, staying in all weekend with wine and movies seems like a solid plan. Here are a few of our favorite wine-themed movies and some wine pairing suggestions although any wine you choose is the perfect pairing. Get the corks (and popcorn) popping! A Walk in the Clouds (1995) enjoy with Razzed or BR Meritage This romatic drama is regarded by some as one of the best wine movies ever made. Starring Keanu Reeves as a chocolate salesman, and Anthony Quinn as the patriarch of a proud family winery, it takes place in the beautiful Napa Valley following WWII. Bottle Shock (2008) enjoy with BR Chardonnay or On The Town Based on the true story of the famous 1976 Judgement of Paris, where a stellar California Chardonnay competes in France against the best of the French wines, this movie is truly amazing. Complete with a great cast (Chris Pine, Bill Pullman and Alan Rickman) combined with an inspirational story and beautiful scenery, this is a must see. The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969) enjoy with SJ Reserve Red or BR Gewurztraminer/Riesling Nominated for 2 Oscars, this film starring Anthony Quinn, is about the inhabitants of an Italian village during WWII. The locals hide a million bottles of wine from the Nazis in an ancient cave, much to the Nazis chagrin. Somm (2012) enjoy with BR Dry Riesling or SJ Late Harvest Riesling This documentary follows four sommeliers as they prepare for the prestigious Master Sommelier exam; a test with one of the lowest pass rates in the world. A variety of wines are sipped and discussed throughout the film, in what can be described only as competitive wine tasting. If you enjoy this first one, there are two other movies in the series. A Good Year(2006) enjoy with BR Sauvignon Blanc or Social Butterfly Based on the book by Peter Mayle, Russell Crowe stars as Max, a London bond trader, who inherits a French vineyard estate upon his uncle s death. It s a fun clash between big city business hustle and the slow winery life of Provence. Will Max sell the vineyard? Will he woo the local café proprietress? Is the mysterious American backpacker really his Uncle s illegitimate daughter- and true heir? Combine these plot twists with beautiful scenery and you will love this romantic comedy with a serious side.

6 NATIVE ROOT RED SLOW COOKER ORANGE CHICKEN The classic sweet grape jam flavors of this wine will pair with the savory and citrus notes of this super easy and fresh winter stew. 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken; cut into chunks ½ cup orange juice ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup honey ½ cup rice vinegar ½ cup soy sauce 2 Tblsp. grated orange zest 1 tsp. red pepper flakes (or more to taste) ¼ tsp ground ginger and ¼ tsp pepper ¼ cup cornstarch 1 cup chopped onions & red peppers Sesame seeds, scallions & orange slices for garnish Make sauce ( orange juice through ginger & pepper) and pour half into the crockpot. Place chicken in crockpot and pour rest of sauce over the chicken. Cook on Low for 4 hours or High for 2 hours. Remove chicken from crock pot and set aside. Cook chicken until browned all over. Put chicken into crock pot and sprinkle with onion soup mix. Add mushrooms to skillet and cook until they begin to brown. Add carrots and onions until they just being to soften. Place veggies in the crock pot over chicken. Add wine, broth, bacon and thyme. Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours or high for 2 hours.
