1 AUGUST 2017 As the oldest winery in the state of Michigan, St. Julian has been perfecting and improving what we do for 96 years. Mountain Rd. Estate Vineyard Great wine starts in the vineyard and we are constantly working with our growers to improve and expand our production. Because it takes three years to get fruit off the vine, we need to look into that crystal ball to determine what we would like to do for future wines. Once we make that decision, it s almost a 4 to 5 year process from the time we order the vines, until we can harvest the first crop. We re excited about the new varietals we have going in the ground in 2018: Auxerrois, Cinsaut, Garnacha, Mourvèdre, Blaufränkisch, and Pinot blanc! Our first harvest of these will be in 2020! We also just planted Crimson Cabernet and Petite Pearl and they will be harvested for the first time next year. At our Mountain Road Estate Vineyard, we were able to purchase an adjacent 5 acre plum orchard. As soon as the transaction happened, we were pulling the plums out so we could get the ground ready to plant 3 acres of Syrah. So in 2018, we will have our own Estate grown Syrah, ready for bottling in Just in time for our 100 year Anniversary! Not only do we have new varietals going into the ground, we recently acquired some established vineyard contracts. Nancie has some of the best relationships with the top growers in Southwest Michigan and they all want to work with St. Julian, which is super exciting! This year we will harvest Carménère, Malbec, Marquette, Mourvèdre, Petit verdot and Tannat grapes for the first time. As Wine Club Members, you will be among the first to taste these new varieties once they get in the bottle!
2 SPOTLIGHT ON: 2016 BR SAUVIGNON BLANC The name Sauvignon blanc means wild white, due to the fact it used to grow wild in the hills of France. Luckily, this grape was quickly recognized for producing wines with great minerality, notes of citrus and fresh cut grass with a nice crisp pucker. The 2016 Braganini Sauvignon Blanc is made from grapes grown at our Mountain Road Estate vineyard, where we think the soil is magical. Vintage after vintage, the fruit from this gravelly soil produces balanced and complex wines. The primary fruit flavors of this year s vintage are passion fruit, gooseberries and tangy citrus. Secondary flavors of mineral, grass and basil add to the classic characteristics that make this wine a favorite year after year. Fans of the 2016 BR Grüner Veltliner will notice that same great acidity, but with a more herbal quality. The BR Sauvignon Blanc was made to pair with fresh seafood. Oysters on the half shell, shrimp and crab are perfection when paired with the bright acidity and citrus flavors of this fabulous wine. Fun fact: Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc are the parent grapes to Cabernet Sauvignon. Visit us at the Vino in the Vines in September to taste through the whole family! HIGH MAINTENANCE: a Sweet Red At St. Julian, we pride ourselves on creating not only beautiful single varietal wines, but fun and exclusive blended wines; like our newest sweet red blend called High Maintenance. This sweeter style of red wine is made from two of our favorite blending grapes, Chancellor noir and Chambourcin. During the making of this wine, the fermentation was stopped in order to keep the natural sugar levels higher in the finished wine. Aromas of cherry, blackberry and dried cranberries are your first impressions. Flavors of dark raspberries, mulberries and plum make it a great wine for transitioning into the fall. Serve it chilled if you would like it softer; room temperature to appreciate more of the red wine characteristics. This wine is your perfect pizza wine. Think of adding some Italian sausage or fresh tomatoes and basil on your pizza to bring in all those beautiful late summer flavors. So where did the name come from? Winemaker Nancie, and the Wine Club girls, Cassandra and Laura, have a lot of fun coming up with ideas for new wines and labels. We have high expectations for what we give to our members. The guys in production say we are High Maintenance. We say we have High Expectations. So as the back of the bottle says, this wine is for all of us High Maintenance wine lovers who know our worth, have high expectations and expect the best because we give the best.
3 Ask Winemaker Nancie s What are some of your favorite food & wine pairings? Justin Dempsey in South Bend, IN As summer is winding down, and harvest is around the corner, I like to get my last few weeks of summertime boating at a local lake in Lawton. Nothing tastes better after a hot afternoon on the water than a cool, crisp glass of BR Sauvignon Blanc paired with some light bites. I especially love this wine served along-side chilled shrimp cocktail with a burst of lemon squeezed on top. And every great day on the lake involves grilling. My husband likes to think of himself as a grilling gourmet and he makes a fabulous steak. Cock of the Walk is my go-to wine for summer grilling. This dry red is aged in stainless, so there is no oak aging to weigh it down. It s just an easy drinking red that really hits the spot with a juicy steak or burger. As the sun is setting and the kiddos are busy chasing fireflies, you ll usually find me sipping on a glass of our Catherman s Port. It s delicious with s mores by the campfire. This is my version of a perfect summer night with Pure Michigan wines! Members of St. Julian We are honored to introduce you to some very special members of St. Julian. Our production team is one of the hardest working group of individuals in the wine industry. From crushing grapes, filling tanks, running chemistry on wines, running the bottling line and fulfilling orders, this dynamic crew keeps all of our glasses full of award-winning St. Julian wine! Every year, St. Julian enters national and international wine competitions as one way to gain feedback and guide our winemaking practices. Tasters Guild International is one such competition, where this year 30 judges from around the country evaluated 1,500 wines from 8 countries and 27 states. We garnered 14 medals; 7 Double Gold and 7 Gold. As a result of this overwhelming performance, St. Julian was awarded the 2017 Most Gold Medals trophy, outpacing every other winery in the chase including wineries from California, Virginia, Italy, Spain, Argentina, New York, and Australia among others! From dry to sweet, there are awards for every palate! 4 TRADITION & INNOVATION MEET more beautiful. Share your story atnews Glass As the oldest winery in the state, we have a strong sense of tradition here at St. Julian. Family run since 1921, a key focus for us is to move forward while retaining the core values of our legacy; values like a commitment to Michigan fruit, quality wines at affordable prices and approachable and top-notch customer service. To that effort, we continue to embrace innovation and opportunities to grow and improve. From the vineyards, to the cellar, to the bottling line and tasting rooms, St. Julian is determined to not be complacent. Over the course of the next 5 years, we have plans to completely re-work our cellar including the addition of multiple new tanks, new filtration and processing equipment and redoing our distillery. And that s just the beginning! The main tasting room and Apollo in Paw Paw is getting totally redone and it s going to be gorgeous. Dundee and Union Pier are adding new outdoor seating. Add that to our aggressive planting in the vineyard and we promise to never stop surprising you with the quality of wine in your glass. WINE & HARVEST FESTIVAL ST. 6 2016 BR SAUVIGNON BLANC CITRUS MANGO GUACAMOLE This vivacious white wine, with its citrusy burst, is a great match for foods that are acidic, like tomatoes. The herbaceous notes complement the cilantro and jalapeño, while the crispness cuts through the creaminess of the avocado, begging for another bite.. and sip! 3 avocadoes, peeled & diced. ¼ cup finely diced red onions ½ tsp sea salt 1 jalapeno, seeded & finely diced 1 lime, juiced 1 mango, peeled and diced 1 ripe tomato, diced ½ cup fresh chopped cilantro Place all the ingredients into a bowl and gently combine. Enjoy over fish, grilled chicken, and burgers, or with veggies and tortilla chips BR LATE HARVEST VIDAL PEARS, BLUE CHEESE & PROSCIUTTO This luscious late harvest wine has notes of pear, honey and orange marmalade that complement the crisp juiciness of the pear. Combine that the saltiness of the cheese and smokiness of the prosciutto and you have a match made in heaven. A smidge of peppery arugula will balance with the concentrated and rich finish of the wine. 2 pears cut into 8 wedges. 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice 1 cup arugula 3 ozs. Blue cheese 6 ozs. thinly sliced prosciutto, cut in half lengthwise. In a large bowl, toss the pears with the lemon juice. Layer a slice of pear, an arugula leaf, and a piece of cheese on a piece of prosciutto and roll up.
