3 English Wines Viticulture and winemaking in England and Wales boasts a long and rich history. From pre-roman times to the present day, there has been wine growing in Britain. There are over 500 vineyards in England and Wales that produce over 5 million bottles per year, this is set to double in the next 5 years. Very often overlooked, our Wine Industry is a hugely significant part of our economy. Vine growing and winemaking bring growth and rejuvenation to the rural economy and much to local communities, creating a strong, positive impact, developing many real, specialist skills, not forgetting the enormous impact on local tourism, with an ecological focus. Here s our pick of English wines. Over 25 varieties of grape are grown, of which two champagne varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir account for over 50% of the plantings. English sparkling wine is made in exactly the same way as champagne and accounts for over 65% of the total production; at international competitions these wines have beaten some of the most highly rated in the world. Bacchus Block Lyme Bay winery, England, 2015, 11.5% Intense and powerful citrus with rich green apple and tangy grapefruit aromas. Very fresh and precise on the palate with crisp apple and soft sweet citrus notes. Shawsgate Frampaign Shawsgate Vineyard and Winery, Brut, Suffolk, England, Non-vintage, 11.5% A fine bouquet of delicate citrus gives way to a fresh and smooth palate, hints of malt biscuit and ripe green apples fill out the length and finish, with moderate sweetness giving extra appeal. Chardonnay Brut Camel Valley, Brut, Cornwall, England, 2014, 12.5% A classic Blanc de Blancs. This 100% Chardonnay sparkling wine delivers a fine mousse displaying miniscule bubbles. Pure green apple, white pear, gentle citrus flavour. and a light toast finish.

Chardonnay, Domaine d Antugnac Languedoc, France, 2014/15/16 13% The cool Pyrenees ensure the freshness of this Burgundian style Chardonnay. Picpoul de Pinet, Domaine Félines Jourdan Languedoc, France, 2016/17 13% Mineral and citrus laden Picpoul from picturesque Bassin de Thau now a must have on any wine list. Madeleine Angevine Danebury, Hampshire, England, % Rich with a nose of nectarine and melon. The finish has depth of flavour sweet ripe fruit. Chenin Blanc, Anthonij Rupert Protea Swartland, South Africa, % Vivid melon, citrus and nectarine aromas. Lively and fresh entry to the palate with stonefruit, peach and apricot immediately apparent.

Gavi di Gavi, Roberto Sarotto Piedmont, Italy, % Roberto s prized Bric Sassi vineyard gives wines which combine floral notes and honey-dew peachiness. House of Commons White Burgundy France, % Produced in Mersault from 100% chardonnay with appealing honey, cream and citrus aromas and flavours and long fresh finish. Sancerre, Les Renarderies, Domaine La Rossignole, Cherrier Loire, France, % Sauvignon in its spiritual home of the Loire provides green citrus with its classic gunflint streak. Chablis, Domaine du Colombier Burgundy, France, % A fine balance is struck here between the piercing stoniness which Chardonnay takes on in this northerly village of Burgundy and the apple fruit with leesy richness. Cabernet Sauvignon Viña Doña Javiera Maipo, Chile, % Shedding some of its trademark firmness giving a fruit driven, juicy style from the warm Maipo Valley. Shiraz Cabernet, Stone The Crows Murray Darling, Australia, % Aussie Shiraz with a lighter touch; Cabernet providing ample backbone to satisfying fruit. Nero d Avola Musita Sicily, Italy, % Providing the slightest note of bitterness achieving balance against a backdrop of ripe currant fruit. House of Commons Bordeaux France, % A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc producing high quality, classic in style, very good fruit, roundness and appeal. Rioja Otiñano Crianza Bodegas El Cidacos, Rioja, SPAIN, % Aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels for 12 months followed by (minimum) 6 months in bottle prior to release.

Pinot Noir, Isabel Estate Marlborough, New Zealand, % A worthy demonstration of the ripe, summer fruited, pure Pinot Noir which New Zealand does so well. Château Labadie, Médoc Bordeaux, France, % Soft but generous rich fruit follow on the palate with hints of spice. Château Beaumont, Haut-Médoc Bordeaux, France, % Brimming with cassis fruit but with a cool quality from stony, mineral freshness. Classy and classic.

8 Rosé Wine Ancora Rosato Monferrato Chiaretto, Piemonte, ITALY, 2016/ % Delicately aromatic with fresh berry and citrus fruit characters. Light and crisp on the palate with ripe fruit balanced by tangy fresh acidity. Sancerre Rosé Brigette et Daniel Chotard, Loire, france, 2014/16 13% Open and exuberant on the nose with lashings of strawberries and cream, it is all creamy red berries on the palate, with a hint of Pinot Noir spice and a fresh, clean finish. Fortified & Sweet Wines Quinta de la Rosa, Late Bottled Vintage Port Douro, Portugal, % Indulgent ripe black fruit and notes of chocolate with a spicy, warming finish. Sauternes, Château Partarrieu Bordeaux, France, % (375ml) Sweet and luscious yet refreshing with notes of honey lifted by bright citrus fruit.

With both power and elegance in wonderful harmony this is the quintessential Grande Marque; awash with charm and panache.
