For starters, it s hard to look at geography, of what fine wine is, and where it can be made the same way again. No wine that I tasted this year has stretched my conception of what s possible the way that Luis Seabra s 2016 Xisto Cru Branco did. Once you combine that with the wine s sheer quality, you get a very clear picture of why I selected it as my wine of the year. It s a white wine from Portugal s Duoro region (aka Port country) that clocks in at 12.5 percent alcohol and has such an emphatic mineral imprint and refinement that the only point of reference I could reach for was Chablis. And, to be clear, the Xisto Cru is so utterly unique that you won t get that much mileage out of the Chablis comparison. Still, we re in uncharted territory enough that you need something to orient yourself. Luis Seabra is a key player in the vinicultural revolution that s making Portugal one of the most exciting places in all of wine. Seabra was the winemaker at the famed Port house, Niepoort. In 2012, he left to pursue working in a more personal style. Cru translates as raw in Portuguese and Seabra strives to present the terroir in the most unmediated way. Here you get choice vineyards and extremely sensitive and largely hands-off winemaking. The Xisto Cru Branco comes from mica schist soils in southern Douro. The vines were planted in and the wine is a blend of Rabigato, Codega, Gouveio, and Viosinho Dozelino Branco. The high altitude vineyards experience dramatic differences between day and night-time temperatures. This helps explain how Seabra is able to coax such extraordinary verve out of the wines. The 2016 Xisto Cru Branco amazes with its sleek length, its cut and its dusty, ultra-expressive minerality. The level of punch and detail are beyond shocking. I encourage you try at least one bottle. It s a safe bet that, from a wine perspective, things will never be exactly the same. This is an important wine that deserves a place among the world s finest. Instead, we ve come up with a distinctly different set of guidelines, one that examines the honesty of a wine, its personality and this is important the sheer pleasure of drinking it. Yes, we prioritize quality and value, but the x-factor that we re really looking for is that impossible-to-define, elusive quality that inspires and excites 2016 Seabra Douro Xisto Cru Branco 2013 Nervi Gattinara Molsino The 2013 Gattinara Molsino blew me away when I tasted it. When I factored in the value and the potential for it to age beautifully, there was no doubt that the 2013 Molsino should be my wine of the year. For Piedmont, 2013 is simply stunning. The wines have a radiant clarity and a punchy dynamic energy that s thrilling. In Nervi s 2013 Gattinara Molsino, you get a dazzling cast of aromatics and pristine, super-delineated complexity. Unlike Barbaresco and Barolo, which are structured around their tannins, the wines of the Northern Piedmont are animated by soaring acid backbones and mineral spines. They are thrilling. Gattinara produces some of the most powerful, longest lived Nebbiolos. Bottles can easily see their 30th birthdays do not underestimate the top bottlings of Gattinara. Nervi has been our most consistent source of old Gattinara. There are plenty of brilliant old bottles out there. The 2013 Molsino offers spice, game, dried rose petals, cherry and perfumed raspberry fruits, tar, leather, tobacco and a fascinating thread of sun-scorched, rocky minerality that you get from Gattinara s volcanic soils. It s supremely elegant. There s no doubt that 2018 marks a turning point for the Northern Piedmont. The wines had been steadily assuming a place on the world stage, but Roberto Conterno s purchase of the Nervi estate catapulted the region s profile. Conterno is arguably the greatest producer in Piedmont and people pay close attention to his moves. Conterno is the first producer in Barolo or Barbaresco to look north. As you would guess, Conterno chose wisely. Nervi is the historic producer of Gattinara with really impressive vineyard holdings, including Molsino. Conterno has been involved in the estate since 1991, when Erling Astrup, a wine collector and friend of his, purchased the winery and sought his counsel. Moving forward, you can expect the pricing to jump substantially. The 2013 Molsino is too compelling to miss out on. This is a window of pricing that you should take advantage of. It seems destined to be included in the pantheon of great vintages of Dom Pérignon. The 2005 Rosé is a world-class Champagne of saturating, tactile presence. 6 SPARKLING WINE CHAMPAGNE CHAMPAGNE sparkling history Savart There is little doubt Fred Savart is one of Champagne s most dynamic young growers. Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media Presidential pedigree Schramsberg is an important chapter in California s winemaking history it s a beautiful example of the trail-blazing spirit of American viniculture. In 1965, Jamie and Jack Davies set out to Napa from LA to do something no one else had done yet in America: they wanted to make great sparkling wines based on Champagne s grapes and Champagne s methods secondary fermentation in bottle, aging the wines for several years before release, etc. Looking back at another century Founded in 1854, Gosset is the oldest Champagne house. However, that has not prevented them from experimenting with new ways to highlight the house s style. We re very happy to present the debut release of Gosset s Cuvée 15 Brut. This magnificent expression of Gosset s regal Champagnes is composed of top vintages throughout the 1990s and since 1999 has aged on its lees for 15 years. The result is a wine of aristocratic depth. The Champagnes of Fred Savart have steadily become some of our favorites. Here you have great examples of an incredibly conscientious producer turning out Champagnes that never fail to deeply impress from his entry level L Ouverture to the top of the range. The small 4ha estate was founded by René Savart in The vines are mainly located in Ecueil with small holdings in the neighboring village of Villiers-aux-Noeuds. This is Pinot Noir country and the grape plays a key role in many of Savart s bottlings. Throughout Champagne, Savart is known for his keen palate and exploration of wines around the world. It s very easy to see the impact on his Champagnes. They are simply impeccable delivering precision, intensity and an ultra-pure mingling of fruit and mineral. Savart s range is so strong that it seems unfair to shine the spotlight on just a few cuvées. Nearly the entire line-up is represented below and regardless of where your exploration begins you can bet that you ll encounter some of the most rigorous and exciting Champagnes around. In no time at all, Schramsberg was realizing its goal - producing exemplary American sparkling wine. Their flagship Blanc de Blancs has made quite a name for itself over five decades of vintages it has been used in some official capacity by every president since Nixon. What Schramsberg has achieved with its sparkling wines is pretty amazing. We ve been witness to blind tastings, which included all the big tête de cuvées, where Schramsberg was selected by more than a few people for wine of the night. Gosset has long existed as an insider s secret. Their Champagnes are complicated and very compelling. They are incredibly finessed and subtle, and simultaneously, powerful and resonant. The extra richness and shadings of complexity that long lees aging brings to the Cuvée 15 Brut beautifully accentuates these qualities. In 2011, a young Armand Heitz returned to the family s domaine and they started producing their own wines. As the contracts expired, they took back some very formidable sites, like Chevalier-Montrachet and Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières. Each vintage seems to go from strength-to-strength. In the great 2014 vintage, the wines were stunning. Even more astonishing were their ultratransparent, tensile and fresh 2015s. Finally, the 2016s are beautifully sleek and lithe. Increasingly, the German wine landscape is looking much more complex and capable of providing serious and utterly fascinating bottles from even the most unlikely grapes. It would be difficult to find a better example of Germany s capacity for offering a great diversity of compelling wines from grapes beyond Riesling than Andreas Durst s Portugieser P that s sourced from 112-year-old vines. If you were to research Portugieser, you might find yourself wondering why should I care about this grape? Typically, it s a workhorse grape of the highest order. The potential for yields is ridiculously high 120hl/ha or more. As you can imagine, your common Portugieser is nothing to be excited about. I mention all this to underscore how mind-blowing Durst s Portugieser P is. Tasting the wine is almost unsettling. In Durst s hands, Portugieser possesses a mysterious depth and haunting perfume. You get everything from sweet herbs, to spice, to floral tones and a strong undercurrent of minerality. For all of its intensity, there s something marvelously agile and delicate about the wine. Andreas Durst spends most of his time being the go-to photographer for German winemakers. However, he also has an incredible knack for discovering forgotten vineyards. His winery behind his house amounts to a haphazard assortment of barrels. You shouldn t let its size and chaotic appearance mislead you here you ll find some of the most heartfelt and rigorous wines around. The vines that he leases in the Northern Pfalz are perched in an area that might be mistaken as a viticultural no-man s land. However, it s also very close to the area of the Rheinhessen that Keller has made famous and the site shares similar limestone soils that produce wines of staggering elegance. Durst focuses on top plots that are often so low-yielding to farm it doesn t make economic sense for the owners to work them. The Portugieser P has to be included among Germany s most thoughtprovoking and singular wines. Rarely are we faced with wines that cause us to reassess what a region and country is capable of. That s exactly what Chacra s Pinots brought about when we first tasted them over a decade ago. Tasting Chacra s recent collaboration with famed Burgundy winemaker Jean-Marc Roulot shocked us in a similar way about Argentina s potential to make world-class whites. In a single day during the ripening season the high temperature will be 82 degrees while the low will be 48. This helps endow the wines with a shimmering clarity. Piero scoured Northern Patagonia for a vineyard that could recreate the magic of that wine. With a good deal of effort and a little bit of luck, he found a vineyard with beautiful old vines planted in 1932 on its original rootstock. It was from here that Chacra got its start. The Chacra vineyards are located in the high Patagonian desert at elevations around 300 meters with the Rio Negro River running through it. The Cincuenta y Cinco Pinot Noir comes from a 7 hectare vineyard of pebbly rocks that was planted in It delivers explosive aromatics and a finely detailed rigorous structure.
