BURGHOUND Nuits- St.- Georges 1er Cru Clos de Forets St Georges Normal Retail Price $159 Offer Price $143 $135 in mixed six- pack 11 BOTTLES AVAILABLE (from an enormous 7.5 ha parcel of vines planted in the early 1950 s) A slightly riper nose grudgingly offers up pure aromas of red and blue pinot fruit, dried rose petal and earth that introduce rich, full- bodied and impressively intense flavors that possess excellent volume on the notably more structured yet impeccably well- balanced finish. This should be terrific but patience will be required. Outstanding points, BURGHOUND, Jan (100% stem retention.) Good deep red. Wilder, darker aromas of black fruits, coffee, mocha, minerals and spices. Very rich, dense and creamy, but with excellent energy giving shape and grip to the raspberry, pepper and meat flavors. A step up in concentration from the foregoing samples. Finishes with big, dusty, fine tannins and superb persistence. The seductively textured and wonderfully intense flavors display a subtle mineral- streak that extends to the naturally sweet, long and palate staining finish. This is not as tight as the Forêts and should drink well a few years earlier. Outstanding points, BURGHOUND, Jan Bright dark red. Sexy aromas of tangy dark berries, Oriental spices, cocoa powder, espresso and flowers. Then creamy but quite closed in the mouth; less expressive today than the Forets Saint- Georges, with hints of dark raspberry and strawberry. Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Louis- Michel s philosophy is to make drinking wines, not tasting wines and they are often the epitome of elegance and finesse. They have gained in concentration and now rank amongst the very best of the villiage REMINGTON NORMAN & CHARLES TAYLOR MW, The Great Domaines of Burgundy Louis- Michel Liger- Belair told me that 2009 is a "great vintage. I prefer my '09s to my '05s though I'm sure that this isn't the case everywhere. I picked between the 12th and the 27th of September and there was very little sorting work required. Yields were comfortable but correct with better than good sugars, which ranged from 12.5 to 14% and thus I chaptalized nothing Overall, I am really excited by the quality of the '09s and I can't wait to see them in a decade's time." This is a classy and sophisticated effort that offers excellent length and in terms of basic character is reminiscent of the Petits Monts. Sweet Spot- Outstanding points, BURGHOUND, Jan Vosne- Romanee 1er Cru Aux Reignots Normal Retail Price $419 6 BOTTLES AVAILABLE Offer Price $377 $356 in mixed six- pack (the Liger- Belair vines in this small vineyard run from top to bottom whereas the others are situated in segments; Cathiard is on top, Grivot in the middle and Arnoux at the bottom) Relatively heavy reduction makes the nose impossible to evaluate but the supple, round and beautifully well- delineated middle weight flavors seem to exude both a liquid minerality and plenty of dry extract that buffers the firm but sophisticated tannins on the tension- infused, focused and highly complex finish. This should be terrific and I really like the impeccable balance. Don t Miss- Outstanding points, BURGHOUND, Jan Echezeaux Grand Cru Normal Retail Price $545 Offer Price $ in mixed six- pack (from a.6 ha parcel situated two- thirds in Cruots and the rest in Champs Traversin) An exuberantly spicy and very ripe black fruit and cassis nose that remains admirably and attractively fresh merges into textured, supple and utterly delicious flavors brimming with ample amounts of dry extract that add to the seductive mouth feel on the strikingly complex and marvelously long finish. This is a terrific example of the appellation and will drink well young yet be fully capable of improving for at least 15 years. Don t Miss points, BURGHOUND, Jan 2011.
