Instead, we ve come up with a distinctly different set of guidelines, one that examines the honesty of a wine, its personality and this is important the sheer pleasure of drinking it. Yes, we prioritize quality and value, but the x-factor that we re really looking for is that impossible-to-define, elusive quality that inspires and excites 2016 Lauer Schonfels GG In any vintage, Schonfels is wine of the year quality. However, in 2016, it s simply so successful that it was the obvious choice for me. When Florian Lauer took over his family s estate in 2005, he set out on a brutal undertaking: to bring the Schonfels vineyard back. It was a painstaking process of nursing vines back to health and clearing the vineyard. Florian had tasted old wines from this site composed of 100-year-old ungrafted vines and knew that it was special. The vineyard is one of the steepest in the Saar. For Florian s father, Schonfels low-yielding old vines and the backbreaking labor involved were completely impractical. By the time that Florian took over in 2005, the vineyard had been abandoned for decades. In rejuvenating Schonfels, Lauer introduced one of the Saar s greatest, most mineral and most complicated wines. The first vintage was 2008 and the wine has been among the best of Lauer s very strong line-up ever since. In any vintage, it s an epic wine, but the 2016 is special. Lauer s 2016s have a beautiful harmony and are crystal clear in their expression. As is usually the case, Schonfels Grosses Gewächs dramatizes all of this. The old vines produce tiny grapes, thus the juice-to-skin ratio is quite low, and it concentrates everything. In 2016, there s extreme depth, grip and lift to the wine. The 2016 Schonfels GG has incredible delineation and finesse. The wine pulls off delivering density and walk on tip-toe lightness in an amazing way. It s really exciting to see Schonfels in top form. With everyone so focused on the 2015 Germans, there s risk of under-buying or outrighting missing the most successful 2016s, like the collections from Schaefer, Keller and Lauer. This would be mistake. The 2016 Schonfels is simply too brilliant a wine not to have a moment in the spotlight. Joe Salamone, Wine Buyer 2016 Lauer Schonfels GG.... $ Special 4-Pack Price: $ ($52.95/btl) 2014 Enfield Cabernet Sauvignon Fort Ross-Seaview Sonoma Coast In all my years of picking out wines of the year, I don t think that choosing something from California ever crossed my mind until now. Please don t get me wrong, there are plenty of California wines that I like intellectually. It s only rare ones that go beyond this and really move me on a deeper level. The 2014 Enfield Cabernet Sauvignon Fort Ross-Seaview Sonoma Coast is one such example. This bottle opened my eyes to what s possible in California: wines that have depth and complexity while remaining fresh and elegant. Enfield focuses primarily on Chardonnay, Pinot and Syrah, but it s their Cabernet that impresses me the most. It reminds me of the Cabs from California s golden age in the 60s and 70s that serve as examples of what California wine can be. There s a similar understatement, structure and subtle, savory profile. It s probably fitting that this is a California Cabernet from one of the most unlikely places. The very cool Fort Ross-Seaview AVA has established itself as one of California s top Pinot Noir addresses. Enfield s Cabernet is a wonderful surprise. Enfield s John Lockwood sums up the vineyard as follows: Marcassin and Hirsch are directly opposite this site and no one even knows about it. Lockwood fell in love with the vineyard. Situated on California s Sonoma coast, the site is extreme, benefitting from the crazy tension between the cool coastal influence and the warmth of the California sun. What results is a Cabernet of incredible finesse and incisive minerality. I strongly encourage you to try at least a bottle. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Fort Ross-Seaview was one the great revelations of this year and a very easy choice for wine of the year. It s a wine that I look forward to watching evolve over the next couple of decades. It s difficult to write about California wine and not reflect on the devastating fires that took so many lives and destroyed homes, vineyards, and wineries.
