1 Burgundy 2005 En Primeur 2005 is a great vintage make no mistake. As Jean Marie Fourrier said, " if you cannot make good wine in 2005 then do something else!". Perfect conditions pretty much throughout, Some hail in several appellations affected the size of the crop, but otherwise pretty much perfect. As many growers told me it just required patience to let the fruit ripen to full flavour ripeness. After plentiful spring rains, Summer was dry and hot with cool nights giving the fruit lots of time to ripen fully. The bunches were small giving concentrated flavours and fresh balancing acidity is also a hallmark to balance the concentration. Very few wines needed chaptilising so the result is whites that have great fruit weight, yet show real terroir. Acidity is fresh and the wines have a terrific purity and depth. Reds similarly have good colour and concentrated fruit, tannins are ripe and again good acidity keeps the wines fresh and vibrant and the unique terroirs express themselves fully. In all i think this is a hugely succesfull vintage with many great wines that look to have great aging potential. The Cote d'or is an undoubted success but so is Chablis, the Maconnais and Chalonnais. There are some great values, with so much good fruit the good growers have been able to select the best fruit for the top wines and this means many of the lesser wines have had lots of declassified fruit added and these look really strong. Demand is undoubtedly very high so please act quickly. We have allocations in place with many of the wines, but things are moving quickly and we cannot guarantee orders until we get an official allocation. Wines will be delivered to us throughout 2007, with many of the top wines not being shipped until late Autumn. We will update the website regularly with tasting notes as we see the wines and some reviews as they come out. Comte Armand/Clos des Epeneaux Pommard Often quite fearsome, tannic wines, these were most impressive. Now totally biodynamic. Benjamin Leroux is a thoughtful and passionate winemaker. The 2 Auxey-Duresses wines are seriously good, the white full of honeyed stone fruits, nutty, creamy and long, while the red is a tighter style with good weight and structure. The Pommard had not been blended when I was tasting, but the components show this to have massive potential. Auxey-Duresses Blanc Comte Armand 2005

2 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Auxey-Duresses Rouge Comte Armand 2005 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Pommard 1er Cru 'Clos des Epeneaux' Comte Arnaud 2005 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin I have sold Denis Bachelet wines since I opened the shop back in they are ultra consistent and are for sure better now than they were then. Both of these wines are super efforts. The Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes is a rich wine full of ripe black and red berry fruits with good acidity. Drink The Charmes-Chambertin is very limited; with a velvet-textured palate of great intensity and again great acidity the wine is perfectly balanced. Drink No wines for these new releases at the moment. Please come back soon. Domaine Ballot-Millot Meursault This was a great visit with some surprisingly delicious reds as well as the expected great whites. Young Charles Ballot, 26, is clearly a star winemaker with great vineyards and definately a name to watch. They have vineyard holdings in some of the best areas, and the vines range from years of age. All wines are barrel-fermented and see about 25% new oak. Meursault Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 This is very impressive with honeyed stone fruits on the nose, and a lovely creamy texture with hazelnut and good acidity.

Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Meursault 1er Cru 'Les Charmes' Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 Surprisingly elegant with delicious fruit, acidity and minerals - very long. Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Meursault 1er Cru 'Perrieres' Domaine Ballot-Millot 2005 This is richer than the Charmes with more honey and hazelnut that builds to a fabulously long finish. 4 This was my favourite - just! More acidity, tighter and more complex it will be the longest liver of the three, though it's really just splitting hairs! I have not tasted them yet but the word in is that these are seriously good. 6 Billaud-Simon Chablis One of my favourite producers; from what I have seen 2005 is an absolutely stellar vintage. I have only tasted the regular Chablis and that was superb. Lovely, honeyed and ripe Chablis for drinking now and over the next 5-8 years. 11 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: René Bouvier, Gevrey-Chambertin This was an impressive line-up in November, and the style is generally getting softer and more general. Of particular merit was the ultra consistent Marsannay 'En Ouzeloy' which was smokey and sweet with lovely pure fruit, good weight and length. The Cotes de Nuits Villages is a great value with lots of ripe berry fruit, spice and a touch of oak.the entry-point Gevrey-Chambertin 'La Justice' is also a great buy - bags of fruit with ripe tannins and good, fresh acidity. The 'Racine du Temps' was a step up, coming from 80 year old vines: rich, full, gamey and sweet with lots of fruit, oak and ripe tannins - great potential. Since Jean-Baptiste took over from his father a few years ago, the quality has steadily improved - they are tighter now with more terroir than before. I have not tasted them yet but reports suggest that these are terrific, focussed wines with a real purity of fruit.

15 We have long sold the stunning, opulent wines from Christophe Cordier, and he was delighted with the 2005 vintage, reporting very low yields due to the hail in 2004 which acted as a green harvest. The sugars were high and acidity excellent. He harvested early to keep all the natural balance. I have not tasted the entire range but the stars are the VIRE-CLESSE, POUILLY-FUISSE, VIELLES VIGNES and the superb VIGNES BLANCHES. The wines have been pure, balanced and very consistent since the start, with the quality high and the prices fair. 17 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Chambolle-Musigny Dujac Fils et Pere 2005 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Vincent Dureuil-Janthial Rully This was a great visit; Vincent is a top man, a hugely energetic and thoughtful winemaker. He started in 1994 with 3 hectares and now has 17. He also works with the moon - biodynamic in most ways. Yields are low from mostly old vines, and the winemaking is quite minimalist in terms of intervention. Vincent's eyes lit up when 2005 was mentioned and said: "Magic! All is fabulous, cool, nothing forced". He clearly loves the vintage. This was a big tasting and I will suggest a few of my favourites. Everything is fermented with wild yeasts, and his oak regime is pretty consistent - 1/3 new, 1/3 1 year old, and 1/3 2 year old. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bourgogne Blanc Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 This is a star - honeyed with lovely nutty fruit and great acidity - typical of all his 2005 whites. Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Rully Blanc 1er Cru 'Le Meix Cadot' Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 This was as great as ever, textured with great intensity, rich and nutty with citrus acidity and a lond, minerally finish. 19 Bourgogne Rouge Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 Lovely fruit and depth - really quite serious. Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Rully Rouge Vielles Vignes Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Rully Rouge 'Maizieres' Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 This was my favourite of an excellent line-up of reds. Lots of opulent cherry and berry fruit, spice, meat, mocha and tannin. Very long with great potential. Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Rully Rouge 1er Cru 'Clos du Chapitre' Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru 'Les Clos des Argillieres' Vincent Dureuil-Janthial 2005 This was also a real star, with loads of fruit and a savoury, meaty edge to it. Long with ripe tannins and lovely oak - tremendous potential.

Sylvie likens the wines to the fabulous 2002's which were/are stunning! These are tightly wound, minerally wines with great concentration and length that require a couple of years to blossom. The regular Meursault is a stunner with great weight of fruit, nutty and minerally and with fresh acidity. The Meursault 'Chevaliers' is a fabulous, flinty style - smokey and honeyed with great complexity - drink Auxey-Duresses Blanc Jean-Phillipe Fichet 2005 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Meursault Jean-Phillipe Fichet 2005 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin This was an impressive visit; Jean-Marie Fourrier is a passionate, opinionated, highly-skilled winemaker. Working with mature vineyards, his ethic is very much minimal intervention. Yields are low, new oak never more than 25%, wines are never racked and all are bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 3 Chassagne-Montrachet's are stunning with the 1er Cru 'Boudriotte' perhaps being the pick. 25 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Boudriotte' Gagnard-Delagrange 2005 Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: Vincent Girardin Meursault Vincent Girardin's operation in Meursault is modern and efficient, and he makes a bewildering number of wines, yet also of incredibly consistent quality. The winemaking has really been refined over the past few years. He concentrates on white wines now currently 80-90% of his total production. His vineyard selectiona are meticulous and he has amassed some highly prized vineyard parcels himself recently. He uses less oak nowadays, around 30%, and is increasingly using the larger puncheons rather than the traditional barriques so as to reduce oak dominance. He is making 50% less wine than he was 5 years ago when he admits to having lost some focus. Now he is much happier - making less but superior wines and concentrating more on quality and techniques. The grapes were harvested fully ripe and no chaptalisation was required in Long, slower fermentations and long elevage before bottling: unfiltered for the whites and both unfined and unfiltered for the reds. Louis Jadot Case Qty: 12 Under Bond Case Price: I think this is the best negociant in the business; they are increasing their vineyard holdings and so more wines are now estate wines. Winemaker Jacques Lardiere described 2005 as a 'babysitter vintage', implying that all he had to do was let the fruit ripen to perfection and then harvest which took place under perfect autumn skies. The alcoholic fermentation was prolonged and trouble-free with splendid tannins and colour extraction. The wines from top to bottom are terrific, and I tried many of these wines 12 months ago and will be looking at several of them again in a couple of weeks. I have not tasted these yet, but having worked with these wines since 1992 vintage, I can well believe these will be some of the best yet, and also best values of the vintage.
