1 Post, Fax & WebsiteOrdersOnly 2000 Burgundy In-Bond Fresh, elegant whites and ripe, balanced reds before 5pm Friday, 15th March St Aubin produces excellent value for money wines 2000 is an attractive vintage, which produced a large yet ripe crop, with fresh, elegant white wines and ripe, balanced reds. As ever, it was necessary to select carefully, so Toby Morrhall spent three weeks in Burgundy during November 2001, visiting over sixty producers. We consider that Burgundy has kept price in step with quality, and continues to offer good value for money. WHITE WINES 2000 is a high quality vintage for white wines. Stylistically, the white wines show a return to a more classically Burgundian spectrum of mineral aromas and fresh flavours after a series (1997, 1998, 1999) of richer and fruitier vintages. Most will be approachable in two to three years, and will continue to improve over the mid term. RED WINES 2000 was a more challenging vintage for red wines but, as usual, the best growers made good to excellent wines. We suggest you read the notes on each wine, as the detailed assessment of the individual producer s performance is a more reliable guide to quality than broad generalisations. We selected rigorously, and have chosen many fine wines. The red wines are fully ripe, possessing aromas of red and black cherries, backed by sweet tannins, and a balanced and supple structure. Most will be approachable in two or three years, and will continue to improve over the mid term. THE WEATHER The weather was fine in the early part of the season and during flowering, setting a large crop. July was cool and wet but the first three weeks of August were warm and sunny, with maturity levels running ahead of the norm. The official start of the harvest was proclaimed for the 11th September in the Côte de Beaune. A large downpour on the 12th September in the Côte de Beaune, together with some hail, threatened the onset of rot in the pinot noir. So the growers rushed to harvest the reds. The most dedicated growers weeded out any less than perfect grapes, often using sorting tables, and were able to make good wines. The white wines were harvested afterwards in good conditions. Unaffected by this storm, the Côte de Nuits official harvest began on the 13th (15th for grands crus), and most picking was completed over the following week in good conditions, with little rain. The Mâconnais had an excellent September, and harvested in favourable weather. RWBURG001 February 2002

2 THE WINES White Wines The Mâconnais performed well again, and the wines of Henri Goyard, André Bonhomme and Domaine de la Soufrandise are excellent. Sadly Henri Goyard has retired, but has left on a high note with a superb We have more wines from Pierre Morey s excellent négociant company Morey-Blanc. We have bought additional wines from Drouhin this year who is performing at a high level, as are Bouchard Père et Fils and Louis Jadot. New this year is a small allocation from a perfectionist grower in Meursault, Jean Philippe Fichet. Red Wines We are delighted to have obtained substantial allocations from two domaines new to The Wine Society, Bernard Maume and Domaine de la Vougeraie. Bernard Maume, and his son Bertrand, have a fine domaine of old vineyards in Gevrey. They make rich and satisfying wines, which are textbook Gevrey, and are very fairly priced. Domaine de la Vougeraie was set up by JC Boisset in 1999 to make all the wines from their prestigious 37 hectare domaine, comprising many fine vineyards. It hired the talented winemaker Pascal Marchand from Domaine Comte Armand, and has invested in all the necessary equipment to make fine wine. The debut vintage 1999 produced excellent wines, but the 2000 is even better. In Nuits-St-Georges we have obtained more wines from the superb Robert Chevillon, and Christophe Drag at Jean Chauvenet hit top form this year. Tollot- Beaut continues to impress by the quality of its wines from modest appellations. From the 2000 vintage all its wines are presented in new packaging, and are bottled in a replica antique bottle. We have more wines from Louis Boillot who offers excellent value for money. A note on the size of this offer We have responded to increasing demand by buying more wine, but only when we are delighted by the quality. Comprising 135 wines (compared to 56 in the 1995 Burgundy Opening Offer) this is one of The Wine Society s biggest ever opening offers in terms of numbers of wines (compared with 2000 Opening Offers of Rhône, 96 wines, and Bordeaux, 80 wines). Even so, the quantity of dozens available for sale is less than half that of the Bordeaux offer. This is because each wine is made in comparatively tiny quantities as the vineyards are small, and the pattern of vineyard ownership in Burgundy is fragmented. When demand exceeds supply Demand for the top wines is high. We share out oversubscribed wines as widely as possible down to a minimum practical level per member. After that, wines are allocated as fairly as possible. Please be aware that some wines will sell out. Should your first choice be sold out, please indicate on the order form your preferred substitute. Alternatively, you can allow The Society to choose for you. Allowing substitution and/or suggesting a preferred alternative will help to increase the likelihood of receiving similar wines should your first choice be sold out, especially if wines are restricted to fewer than 12 bottles per member. 14 BU16911 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (François Lamarche) Lamarche produce a well-balanced wine from their holdings spread between the bottom, middle and top of the Clos, with plenty of power and drive BU17061 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Suchots (Jean Grivot) A beautifully harmonious wine, exhibiting a pleasing tension between the succulence of its fruit and the polished grain of its texture Low stock: six bottles only per member. BU16281 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Lavaux St Jacques (Denis Mortet) Wonderful premier cru planted in 1951 in the cooler valley, La Combe de Lavaux, behind Gevrey, producing fine-flavoured wines of considerable longevity BU17821 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Aux Reignots (Bouchard Père et Fils) Rich, fine and penetrating flavour with Vosne s hallmark velvety texture. Excellent Low stock: six bottles only per member. BU17271 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru (Maume) From two parcels of 70-year-old vines, this is a multi-dimensional wine with profound depth of fruit underpinned by ripe tannins requiring, but amply rewarding, long cellaring BU18301 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Jadot) Jadot own very old vines in this lesser known vineyard which explains why this stands out at any Jadot tasting. Dense and concentrated BU17571 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (Domaine de la Vougeraie) Made from a well-situated parcel at the top part of the clos, this sweet, velvety and unusually succulent Vougeot is excellent Christophe Roumier Page 14

15 BU18311 Echézeaux Grand Cru (Jadot) Jadot own a third of a hectare of this grand cru which, in the right hands, produces wines of sumptuous fruit and profound intensity of flavour BU17581 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (Domaine de la Vougeraie) From the terres blanches on the Morey side of Bonnes Mares, this has a finish that seemingly goes on and on for ever Low stock: six bottles only per member. BU18281 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (Jadot) Bonnes Mares is a firm and powerful wine with great ageing potential. You can measure its density of flavour by the impression of weight in the mouth BU16661 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru (Roumier) Roumier is the proud owner of a sizeable slice, 1.45 hectares, of Bonnes Mares, planted variously between 1920 and Starting as a powerful, even robust wine, it requires cellaring to smooth out its rough edges and reveal its nobility Low stock: six bottles only per member. BU18551 Musigny Grand Cru (Drouhin) Drouhin owns half a hectare of this sublime vineyard which regularly produces, in the opinion of many Burgundy lovers, the finest and most exquisite wine of the whole region. Caressing silky texture and great length of flavour Low stock: six bottles only per member. BU16921 La Grande Rue Grand Cru (François Lamarche) Owned exclusively by Lamarche, and very well situated between La Tâche to the south and the Romanées (Conti and St Vivant) to the north, this possesses profound depth of flavour and needs time to unravel its tightly packed structure. (A bottle of the 1946 tasted recently at the domaine was fully mature and still very much alive.) Low stock: six bottles only per member. Laurence Jobard, winemaker at Drouhin Page 15
