2 St Michel Cathedral on the Garonne RIver St Emilion and vineyard This lovely weeklong trip combines the glories of the French landscape with the famous wine region of Bordeaux which produces the world s highest concentration of fine wines. Join us as we sail through charming scenery on a relaxing cruise through the region of France famous for its Art de Vivre. We have chosen spring and early autumn for our cruises when temperatures are warm and tourist sites less crowded. Enjoy a variety of wine tasting opportunities during the cruise including Château Lanessan and Chateau Gruaud-Larose (Haut Medoc), Château de la Dauphine (Margaux) and Château de Myrat (Sauternes). The success of wine production in the Bordeaux region is attributed to its proximity to the sea and rivers which provide the region with a moderate climate and little risk of severe frosts. Throughout the entire Bordeaux region, close to 450 million bottles of wine are produced in most years. At its heart, sitting alongside the Garonne River, the city of Bordeaux is surrounded in nearly all directions by its world-famous vineyards. In addition to our wine tastings and vineyard visits, other highlights of our cruise include the remarkable Citadel at Blaye, the Basin d Arcachon where we will enjoy oyster tasting and the Great Dune of Pilat, the highest sand dune in Europe. Towards the end of our trip we take a tour of the grand city of Bordeaux, with its many magnificent 18th and 19th century buildings which were built from the wealth derived from the sugar trade. Along the river front you find the Town Hall where the famous Bordeaux Classification of 1855 was drawn up and the Quai des Chartrons where many of the chateaux have their main administrative offices. In the centre of town there are many beautiful buildings, including the cathedrals of Saint Andre and Saint Michel, recently selected World Heritage listed monuments by UNESCO. Our View Built in 2012, the stylish and elegant MS Cyrano de Bergerac is the perfect choice of vessel for cruising along the Garonne and Gironne Rivers. The atmosphere on board is informal, and the friendly and experienced staff will make you feel at home. With the majority of the mornings spent cruising, you can relax in the large, comfortable lounge, or on the spacious sun deck, watching the magnificent scenery of the Bordeaux region slowly pass you by. In the afternoons join the guided excursions, which include city/village tours, and visits to chateaux, where you will have the opportunity to taste their wines, and perhaps purchase a bottle! One of the highlights of the itinerary is an enjoyable boat trip to Arcachon Basin, where you can sample the freshest oysters, washed down with a glass of white wine. On board in the evenings, subtle, colour-changing lighting and background music provided by the talented onboard musician, will provide you with the perfect atmosphere to relax over drinks whilst enjoying conversation with your fellow passengers. A hidden gem on the ship is an additional smaller, quieter, lounge-bar area on the aft of the upper deck, leading on to an outdoor terrace, where you can relax with a book or simply enjoy the passing delights of the region. Guest Speaker Richard Nurick Joining us onboard as guest speaker and to share his wealth of knowledge of the wines of the region will be Richard Nurick who has been involved in the wine trade for over 50 years. He started in 1959 following Military Service and University with a three year apprenticeship working in cellars, a wine shop, assessing and buying and selling wines and culminating in a Stage in Bordeaux during the 1961 vintage. He then joined Fickus Courtenay & Co Ltd, a London Wholesaler/Importer company selling wines to Hotels, Clubs and Restaurants and was promoted to London Sales Director taking particular interest in Champagne in the West End of London. During this period he studied the WSET courses and passed the Diploma Level and then started a series of courses with Tutored Tastings for the London University Wine & Food Society and other University Wine Clubs. Richard launched Hawkins & Nurick importing and distributing mainly French Wines to the Wine Trade and London Hotels, Clubs & Restaurants and carried on importing and broking wines until he retired from full time wholesaling and started as a Wine Lecturer and Consultant. As a Wine Lecturer he works for Newbury and Henley Colleges teaching WSET and Wine Appreciation courses. During the last 20 years he has taken groups of customers and students to Champagne, Alsace, Burgundy & Bordeaux as well as Jerez & Rioja, Germany & Oporto. In the last five years he has lectured on a number of cruise ships visiting wine regions in France and is currently a Judge with the International Wine Challenge. Cruise Director Rainer Sudhoelter We are delighted that Rainer will be our Cruise Director for this journey aboard the MS Cyrano de Bergerac. Rainer has a passion for southern France, so much so that he decided to make it his home many years ago. He has worked on many Noble Caledonia tours worldwide and is a firm favourite with our guests but has a particular fondness for our French itineraries and enjoys sharing his local knowledge enabling you to make the most of this beautiful area. 3 The Itinerary Day 1 London to Bordeaux. Fly by scheduled flight from London Gatwick to Bordeaux or travel by Eurostar & TGV (via Paris). On arrival transfer to the MS Cyrano de Bergerac and embark. This evening meet your fellow travellers for a welcome cocktail reception and dinner onboard. Day 2 Bordeaux to Pauillac. A relaxing morning cruise along the Garonne and Gironde Rivers to the town of Pauillac which is possibly the most famous of all the Bordeaux wine producing appellations with a total of 115 different chateaux producing wine. Pauillac wines are rich, full bodied and tannic. After lunch onboard, there is a choice of excursion to one of two fabulous wine estates. Visit Chateau Lanessan, an estate which dates from 1793 and houses a famous cellar and a sophisticated horse museum, with superb stables and a collection of horse-drawn carriages dating back to the Belle Epoque. Alternatively visit Chateau Gruaud- Larose, an estate with a long history in the St Julien appellation dating back to the days when the property was first owned by a knight known as Joseph Stanislas Gruaud. Today the chateau produces an average of 18,000 cases of wine each year, offering a powerful Bordeaux wine in a traditional style. Each visit will include the estate s cellars, followed by a wine tasting. Afterwards travel along the route des châteaux (Mouton- Rothschild, Lafite-Rothschild, Cos d estournel, Saint Estephe) with several photo opportunities en-route of these magnificent chateaux. Return to the vessel in Pauillac and enjoy dinner onboard this evening and moor overnight. Day 4 Blaye to Libourne to Saint Emilion. We set sail early this morning, enjoying breakfast as we cruise. We join the river Dordogne and head for Libourne where we arrive in the early afternoon. After lunch onboard, we set off on our excursion to Saint-Emilion which includes a guided visit of the underground monuments of Saint-Emilion village. We then visit an exceptional Troglodyte settlement the cave of Emilion. Afterwards we continue to Château de la Dauphine at Fronsac for a tasting of their fabulous wines. Since the 18th century, the wines of Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac enjoyed the best of reputations in the Libourne region, and even rated higher than their neighbours in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. We also visit the first floor of the Château, which is truly majestic, built in 1750 in the classical style and set within beautiful gardens. We rejoin our vessel in Libourne and moor overnight. Day 5 Libourne to Cadillac. Enjoy breakfast as we cruise this morning, heading for Cadillac. After lunch onboard we will depart for a tour of Château de Roquetaillade. The dungeon tower dates from the 11th century, and the quarters of the Seigneurs from the 12th century. The new castle was refurbished by Viollet le Duc, initiator of the Gothic Revival Movement in France , well-known by the public for his interpretive restorations of Medieval buildings, such are Notre Dame cathedral in Paris and the ramparts of Carcassonne. We conclude with a visit to nearby Sauternes for a tasting of this delicious sweet wine. Château de Myrat is the property of family De Pontac, involved in Bordeaux vines since The castle itself was rebuilt by 1730 and since 1960 it has produced the famous sweet white wine of Sauternes, ranked as a Grand Cru of Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) class in the original Bordeaux Wine Oyster Beds at the Basin d Arcachon Official classification of We return to the vessel for dinner and remain moored overnight. Day 6 Cadillac to Bordeaux. We have breakfast and lunch onboard today as we continue our cruise back to Bordeaux, where we arrive in the early afternoon. After lunch join a city tour which will include highlights such as the cathedrals of Saint Andre and Saint Michel, after which we visit the interesting Museum of Wines for a short tour and a wine tasting. Day 7 Bordeaux to the Arcachon Basin to Bordeaux. After breakfast onboard, we set off on our full day excursion to the centre of the Arcachon basin. We begin our tour by boarding local boats for a mini cruise of the Basin d Arcachon, touring around Bird Island and ending at Le Canon where we visit an oyster farm. Here we learn about the farming and history of the oyster and enjoy a delicious tasting, with bread & butter and dry white wine. Cruise back to Arcachon and enjoy some time at leisure before we transfer by coach for lunch at the restaurant Cap Pereire, located in the western sector of Arcachon with superb views of the basin. After lunch, you can choose to return to the vessel for a relaxing afternoon onboard or join the final part of the excursion as we depart to visit the Great Dune of Pilat, at 107 metres the highest sand dune in Europe. The view from the top is awe-inspiring. This evening join your fellow travellers onboard your ship for a Farewell Gala Dinner. Day 8 Bordeaux to London. After breakfast onboard disembark and transfer to the airport or train station for your return journey to London. The train from Bordeaux to Paris is with TGV, changing in the capital for the Eurostar to London St Pancras. Day 3 Pauillac to Gironde Estuary to Blaye. We set sail early this morning, cruising along the Gironde to the estuary. We have lunch onboard and arrive in Blaye in the early afternoon. The wine appellations in the Blaye area cover a total of 6,000 hectares, with no fewer than 700 winegrowers. Red Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux are mainly Merlot based, deep-coloured wines with fruity aromas. Sauvignon Blanc, the star grape variety in White Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux wines has a lovely citrus acidity and a long after taste. We set off on our excursion along the Corniche, or cliff route, stopping in the village of Bourg, a charming city built on a rocky outcrop enclosed by Medieval ramparts. Here, we visit the superbly located Château Tayac, overlooking the river, for a wine tasting. We continue on to visit the Citadel at Blaye before returning to our vessel. 4 Pre-Cruise Extension to Ile de Re Chateaux Mouton-Rothschild 23rd to 26th April & 8th to 11th October 2015 With its rich history and fascinating heritage sites, the picturesque coastline of Ile de Re ranks amongst the highlights of the French Atlantic Coast. Known as the White Island for the quality of its light and whitewashed houses, this holiday island offers the peace and quiet of authentic island life, as well as opportunities to explore its pretty villages, local market, and nearby La Rochelle, famous for its Vieux Port. Our stay is based at the four-star Hotel Le Clos Saint Martin, located a short walk away from St Martin de Re with its Vauban Citadel and bustling harbour. On the final morning of the extension we have included a trip to see the Corderie Royale at Rochefort, a world famous museum and part of the Grand Arsenal of Rochefort. Le Clos Saint Martin Hotel & Spa This four-star property offers comfort in a relaxed setting and is situated only a short walk from the town centre and port with its fortifications. Check out after breakfast and depart for a morning drive to nearby Rochefort. On arrival enjoy a visit to see the fascinating museum at the Corderie Royale, International Centre for the Sea, an exceptional museum, and part of the Grand Arsenal of Rochefort. Lunch will be taken in a local restaurant after which we continue on to Bordeaux to embark the MS Cyrano de Bergerac. 5 MS CYRANO DE BERGERAC Built in 2012 and launched in May 2013, the MS Cyrano de Bergerac is a stylish and elegant vessel built to embody comfort and relaxation with attentive personal service for cruises in the Bordeaux region. The vessel can accommodate up to 174 passengers but for the purposes of these cruises we are limiting the passenger number to 150 to allow for more space onboard and a convivial atmosphere. Original paintings throughout the ship and French design touches give the ship a unique character. The vessel is owned and operated by our associates CroisiEurope and we have chartered the ship for this fascinating voyage. There is also a highly qualified and experienced crew of 30. Your Cabin/Suite Spacious and comfortable, all cabins are well appointed with bright and modern decor and feature either twin or double beds and are equipped with private en-suite facilities, satellite television, hairdryer, safe, radio, individually controlled air conditioning and heating and telephone (for internal calls only). Cabins measure approximately 13 square metres and those on Upper Deck have large picture windows.
