The region was founded in the eighth century when monks who followed Charlemagne's army down the Danube saw the grape growing potential of its south-facing terraces. In 1780 the Salomon family acquired the Undhof (a farm building once part of a Capuchin monastery) and started producing wines there in The Salomon's ancestors were boatmen involved in the salt trade with their wine business only a sideline. Today Salomon is one of the most progressive and quality driven wineries in Austria, making Riesling and Grüner of stunning purity and elegance. Salomon Undhof is deservedly regarded as a pioneer of Austrian winemaking being the first to export its wines in The company now exports over half its production. Salomon Undhof is managed by the charismatic Bertold Salomon, who until 1991 was the president of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board. The vineyards total 30 hectares, with holdings in the Kögl, Pfaffenberg, Hund, Wachtberg and Wieden sites. These are mostly terraced and south-facing along the Danube River. The soil is mainly Urgestein primary rock. Salomon's style aims for "filigree" fruit, an apt description for white wines of gentle refinement and emphatic elegance. For the last 222 years, Salomon Undhof has produced white wines from the best terraced sites along the Danube. Kristall clear wines with fine minerality. The style of Salomon Undhof wines is an alliance between character, balance and harmony. Wines meant to be drunk young are fresh and subtle; wines for keeping acquire with age a luscious complexity. In Stein/Donau, where the winegrowing areas Kremstal and Wachau are interlocked, the soil offers a fascinating array of primary rock terroirs (Urgestein) such as gneis, granite and schist as well as partly loess. Ideal climate: The winters are cold and the summers are warm, there are sharp temperature differences between day and night. Sunshine is plentiful and rain is scarce, creating the ideal conditions for grape growing in this lovely river valley. The symbiosis of ancient stone soils and loess with the Danube-influenced microclimate and old vineyard terraces yields the optimal growth conditions for aromatic, elegant white wines. These excellent sites are defined over hundreds of years through meager soil and steep south facing stone terraces. All of the top vineyard sites of the domaine are included in the vineyard classification of the Danube region with the designation of Erste Lage ÖTW.

Grown on loess-conglomerate soils this dry wine has a lovely bouquet of fine citrus and fresh herbs. 4 Picked by hand. De-stemmed fefore crushing. Gravity fed into press. Separation of press wine and free run. Sedimentation in juice for 48 hours, then first racking of still cloudy grape juice of sediment. Fermented in stainless steel at approx 18º C for three weeks. 10 days settling, then racking off the gross lees. Fine lees contact until early February, earth filtration. Bottling. Alcohol 12%. Residual Sugar 1.2 g/l Acidity 5.3 g/l Bright Grüner with a good dollop of fruit, fresh white pepper and crunchy acidity, all in all making it fabulous value too. Wieden & Berg Gruner Encircled by a massive property-wall the Wieden vineyard is adjoining the winery. Shoots from the old Wieden GV-vines have been crafted and replanted on the neighbouring terraces of the Kreuzberg. A wine with supple mouthfeel and lush texture, hints of yellow peach. A beautifully concentrated wine that balances flavors of baked apple and spicy pepper. It feels full in the mouth, with a tense texture and intense acidity. Drink now, but better to hold for two years. Wachtberg Gruner The impressive loess terraces of this single vineyard Wachtberg are located right behind the old town of Krems. This vibrant wine is full to the brim with spice and classic GV-fruit. Lovely grainy texture, good depth balanced with crisp acidity. Glass closure. Wine Enthusiast, New York: Wachtberg /100 This is a ripe, creamy wine made with grapes from a single vinyard. It s smooth yet laced with minerality and a tang of lemon zest, green apple and kiwi. Lindberg Gruner Erste Lage ÖTW This Grüner reflects its cool, breezy origins in strikingly intense aromatics and bracing acidity. The vines in this single vineyard are 50 years and more, growing on loess over slate, located between the Kögl and Wachtberg. This wine should develop nicely for at least years.

5 Reviewed by David Schildknecht (The Wine Advocate): 2010 Lindberg Erste Lage Kremstal DAC Reserve Grüner 90/100 The Undhof 2010 Gruner Lindberg Reserve displays sheer sap and clarity of flavour that harkens back to the Messwein, but with greater intensity; backed by greater extract and glycerin; and mingled with Urgestein-typical sense of pungent mineral impingement. Snap pea and fresh green bean are garlanded with lilac and tinged with pepper and crushed stone in a dynamically interactive, infectiously juicy finish. This ought to be worth following for the better part of a decade. Steinterrassen Riesling Mountain-grown in weathered ancient stone soil, this wine has a nose of delicate stone-fruit tones and sweet floral aromas. Soft, smooth, fruity yet bone dry. An elegant Riesling with clear definition. Undhof Kogl Erste Lage Riesling Even in a riper vintage like 2011, Kögl takes time to show itself. Right now, the ripeness reads in its viscous texture and a flavor that combines the sweetness and vegetal flavour of spring peas; the violet scents hint at the detail to come. Put this straight into the cellar for another five to ten years. Erste Lage ÖTW South-terrace single vineyard in Stein, heavily weathered Urgestein with crystalline schist. Typically floral and stone-fruit-driven Riesling, with great finesse, refined white. Very elegant wine with lovely length. Glass closure. Reviewed by David Schildknecht (The Wine Advocate): 2010 Undhof Kögl Erste Lage Kremstal DAC Riesling 90/100 Intriguing aromas of saffron and yellow lentil in the nose of the Undhof 2010 Riesling Kogl - which incorporates the Salomon's entire crop from that site this vintage, and was slightly de-acidified as must - could as well have come from a Grüner, though the present wine's lemony brightness disabuses one of any such inference. There is a salty and somehow crystalline sense of mineral interaction and palate cling to this refreshing and buoyant saffron-tinged mineral-vegetable soup that I find thoroughly delightful. I would anticipate half a dozen years of versatility but still be inclined to drink lots of this in its youth. Wine Spectator Kim Marcus: Undhof Kögl 2009 Top 100 wines of the year 2011; 92/100.

6 Steiner Kogl Reserve Riesling Salomon Riesling Undhof Steiner Kogl Reserve 2011 is sourced from a single South-terrace vineyard in Stein. This elegant Riesling offers great depth, with layers of expressive, concentrated ripe fruit, floral and mineral character with lovely length. This comes from some of the oldest vines Bert Salomon farms, planted on the area s ancient urgestein rock mixed with crystalline schist. The vineyard tends to produce very savory wines, and this is no exception. It recalls really great ramen stock in its flavour, a deeply umami mix of kombu and pork broth, the meatiness underlined by earth and lebkuchen spice. While muscular, there s nothing showy or pushed about it; in fact, it feels more like it was unearthed than vinified, the flavors that well to the surface as ancient as the soil they come from, as fresh as the moment they see light.
