Australia has no native grape varieties. There are more grape varieties in Italy than in any other country in the world, they number in the thousands. Italy, despite being one of the world s largest wine producer, its wines have only recently caught the attention of wine enthusiasts outside Europe. In Australia many Italian varieties have become more popular, and there is a recent trend to Southern Italian varieties. Wine drinkers may feel intimidated by the sheer breadth of Italian wines and especially its extraordinary array of grape varieties which are produced there. Getting to know Italian wines takes time but it is worth it. Lindsay, an enthusiastic Italian wine lover, will take us on a tour of some of Italy s wine regions and the many indigenous grape varieties together with a tasting of the wines from Italy and locally grown Italian varieties. 2 It was learner Phil from down the hill, who got the brewing craze He thought he d save himself some bucks and earn a little praise; He brought himself a brewing kit and made some Coopers Ale And all his mates said it was great So thus begins my tale The Ballad of the Young Winemaker This brewing lark s a piece of piss, he drawled laconically I think I ll move to makin wine. It seems a cinch to me So learner Phil (who was no dill) progressed from Coopers Ale And bought himself a trailer-load (shiraz from down The Vale.) He picked it on a summer s day (the max was 41) The skins were cracked and pretty soon The ferment had begun. Rob Walker and Chris Bills July 2018 I could fill these rooms with something good Phil had a sudden thought I ll mention it to the members They could fill em up with port. But none of this really happened He was dreaming and flying blind I ll come clean and tell the misses,i reckon she won t mind. But When Phil s wife of twenty years found out about the loan She was quick to find the details and soon got on the phone To put an end to Phil s stupid ways and make him see the light Of the folly of wasting money and attending meetings late at night If you really want good beer and wine, much better than your own.. Just go down to the local, and bring the best back home. The plastic vat he d bought was small. The must soon overflowed; Phil plunged the cap, he added ice, but it could not be slowed. He stayed awake for two whole nights to tend his first-off brew The bubbling ceased the wild yeast Poor Phil was in the poo. His making wine had been a week, he was completely buggered; His finances were up the creek (and the wine was fairly rugged.) Acetic spores just floating past had taken off the shine And all those litres of shiraz More vinegar than wine. Where many would ve given in or headed for the pub Young Phil converted loss to win and joined the Blackwood Club. And ten years on, young Phil now makes a wine that all agree Deserves the medals that it takes Thanks BWBC! But now Phil needs equipment and nothing but the best; A variable-capacity vat, and pump yet Phil won t rest. He takes his wine to restaurants and can t afford the corkage; To pay for all this high-tech gear He s taken out a mortgage Phil loved his wife; she wouldn t want her money spent on wine She wished to travel overseas and be taken out to dine But he d found something different :a better way to live He wasn t going to give it up...she would have to give... He thought about a single life and -p raps live on his own And dream of bottles and flagons and how to spend his loan He thought If she should leave me, I d have time to sit and stare At the rooms that once were occupied...but would now be stark and bare. But Phil wanted none of this and told her where to go To find good friends and have a laugh and be part of the show She thought about it long and hard and wondered whether she Could be the next financial officer of BWBC. The rest they say is history And we should all agree If it weren t for the likes of Phil There s no anniversary. The leaders and the membership Never cease to ebb and flow Those who ve gone before us. Fade away and go Some go upstairs but some go down And we here drink a toast To those who made it possible For the rest of us to boast. But winning is not everything As all of us are friends We sometimes come to bottle Sometimes to make amends And say Well done to those who ve won and made something rather grand And today is exactly that.. I know you ll understand So Please stand up with me right now I ll make it all quite plain That unless a miracle occurs We won t do this again. Happy 40th anniversary. 4 It s a miracle! Synthetic wine made from water but NO grapes can be made to mimic the taste of fine champagne It is a claim of biblical proportions, but two wine experts say they can transform water into wine in just 15 minutes. For millennia, wine has been made by fermenting grapes using yeast to turn the grapes sugars into ethanol, giving the drink its alcoholic content and distinctive taste. What is wine Water Amino Acids Alanine, Proline, Glycine Acids Tartaric Acid, Mallic Acid, Lactic Acid Sugars Fructose, Glucose Volatile Organics Ethyl Butyrate, Isoamyl Alcohol, Limonene Ethanol So why not go to the laboratory get the ingredients and make wine? Mardonn Chua and Alec Lee, who are based in San Francisco, devised the idea of making grape-free wine while visiting a winery in California s Napa Valley last year. There, they saw a bottle of award-winning chardonnay they couldn t afford, which inspired them to come up with a tasty but thrifty alternative, making synthetic wine without grapes, instead combining ethanol with carefully-chosen flavour compounds. Their first attempt to mimic wine was a disaster, but they have now honed their technique to recreate the taste of the sparkling Italian white wine Moscato d Asti and have gone on and created 500 bottles of a replica version of 1992 Dom Pérignon champagne. Meanwhile over in Colorado a laboratory that performs chemical breakdowns of mass-market products such as baby food and suncream also runs a wine business. The laboratory developed a method of identifying nearly 600 micro-components in a wine. By taking ordinary wine and adding in essences and grace notes to make it resemble something grander. The company, Replica Wine, is busy making copies of the world s most popular wines, giving them cheeky names such as Knockoff or Pickpocket, flogging them for half the price and boasting that no one can tell the difference. While some horrified oenophiles have called the creations Frankenstein wines, the company is confident it stands on the right side of history, confident they cannot be sued supermarkets make generic versions of foods all the time. Are they just stealing a consumer s ability to experience a wine that was grown in a place they have yet to visit? Is this virtual reality in the world of oenophilia? Over in China they take a different approach to mimicking the worlds best reds. Red wine is sourced from overseas wineries, including Australia, re-bottled and labeled with fake labels of well known brands. One warehouse owner, detained by the authorities, is quoted as saying they are not fake wines, they bring no harm to the human body. I told customers the price is very cheap but the quality is not that good. They were willing to buy. Sources:- Mail on Line, New Scientist, The Times, The Sydney Morning Herald Thanks to Manfred Kurmis and Richard Blake for sending me copies of the articles The chemists among our members should be able to recreate some of our award winning members wines.
