October 24, 2018 Tapas Dinner Upon arrival into Bilbao, you will be transferred to San Sebastian to check into the Hotel de Londres for the next 2 nights. The balance of the day is yours to enjoy and explore all that San Sebastian has to offer. This evening join Sanjay Goel for our Welcome Pintxos (Tapas) Hopping! A pintxo is a small snack, typically eaten in bars, traditional in northern Spain and especially popular in the Cantabria, Asturias, the Basque country and Navarre. They are usually eaten in bars or taverns as a small snack while hanging out with friends or relatives; thus, they have a strong socializing component, and in the Basque country and Navarre they are usually regarded as a cornerstone of local culture and society. 3 October 25, 2018 San Sebastian Breakfast, Lunch After breakfast, meet in the lobby for our morning tour of San Sebastian. Once the meeting place of the Kings and Aristocracy, it remains a popular place to stroll along the wonderful seaside promenade admiring the elegant buildings. Take the Funicular up the cliff to Monte Igueldo for spectacular panoramic views of the bay, ocean and surrounding islands. A walking tour of the old town with some free time to stroll the maze of old streets with charming shops and cafes before a visit to the Maritimes Heritage Museum in Albaola to learn about the Basque whalers and anglers that voyaged to Atlantic Canada in the beginning of the 16 th century. Lunch will be at one of San Sebastian s amazing restaurants and then the rest of the afternoon will be free to explore this spectacular city. This evening, there will be an optional gastronomic dinner (TBA) hosted by Sanjay Goel. (additional cost). Gastronomy is an art and a feature that sets San Sebastian apart. In fact, of the seven 3- Michelin star (the highest there is) restaurants in Spain, three are in San Sebastian, home to another great selection of establishments holding a total of 17 Michelin stars where you can enjoy the excellent fare dished p by the city s culinary artists. San Sebastian is one of the cities in the world to hold the highest number of Michelin stars per square metre (only beaten by Kyoto Japan, and well ahead of cities like Paris and Lyon. October 26, 2018 San Sebastian - Rioja Breakfast, Lunch After breakfast, you will depart from San Sebastian by motorcoach. There will be a short stop in Haro upon arrival in Rioja before proceeding to the first winery. Along with its beautiful antique quarter, declared Special Interest Heritage in 1975, you will find a few 15, 17 & 18 century palaces with amazing facades in different architectural styles (Plateresque, Renacentist, Barrocan). Next stop will be at the Marqués de Riscal Winery. In the heart of the Marqués de Riscal wine cellars, the Canadian architect, Frank O. Gehry, has brought a colossal project to life with a special contribution. It gives shape to the cellars spirit innovation and tradition are united in a single building, made using the most modern materials and constituting a true architectural landmark. Without any doubt, the City of Wine is one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken in Spanish wine cellars to date. The spectacular form of Frank O Gehry s building to house the hotel, combined with the rich beauty of the landscape and the surrounding installations of Marqués de Riscal, offers an exceptional setting to live a unique and unmatchable experience, and all in this exceptional place called the City of Wine. 4 The next stop is Winery Baigorri a unique location in la Rioja Alavesa with an incomparable setting for the growing of vines, for a visit and wine tasting followed by lunch at the Bodega with wines pairing. After lunch, continue to the nearby village of LaGuardia. Together with Haro, the most famous winery villages in the La Rioja region, but this one belongs to the Basque country. With its very well preserved Medieval Old Quarter, it is a walled town and an important vantage point in the past. Today Laguardia welcomes visitors with open arms and fine food and drink. The winding medieval street plan of Laguardia, the old gates into the town and the surviving remains of its walls will carry you back in time, just like the Neolithic and Bronze Age remains found nearby, the oldest agricultural communities discovered in the Basque country. Late afternoon arrive at your hotel to check. This evening will be free to explore the hotels restaurants or a the local area. October 27, 2018 Rioja - Madrid Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Credit After breakfast, you will depart from Rioja by motorcoach for Madrid. Along the route we will cross another one of Spain s wine regions Ribera del Duero. Some of the most famous Spanish wines are nowadays produced in this area. En-route, we will stop for a visit and wine tasting at one of the most impressive Wineries in this area Abadia Retuerta. On arrival, enjoy a visit of the state, vineyards and cellar to taste some of their wines. After the tasting proceed to the 12 th Century Abbey for lunch with pairing wine. After lunch continue to Madrid where you will check into the Intercontinental Madrid for your 2 night stay. This evening is free to enjoy Madrid on your own. We have included a $50 Euro credit for each guest at the hotel for dinner (Food & Beverage room credit). October 28 th, 2018 Madrid Breakfast, Dinner After breakfast, join your local guide for your half-day city tour of Madrid. The tour begins with a sightseeing tour through the most important and representative avenues, streets and squares of Madrid to admire its impressive buildings and monuments: Plaza de Cibeles, Plaza de Colon and Puerta de Alcala. Continue on to Puerta de Sol considered the axis point of Spain and from where all roads start. The famous Plaza Mayor, followed by Madrid s Town Hall in Plaza de la Villa and the old quarter and its cozy streets, forming all together in the well-known area of the Madrid of the Austrias & Borbones. It is during this age that Madrid was the capital of the Empire. It is the Madrid of the Felipes. Village & Court important town with plenty of feasts, Convents, soldiers. 5 Visit the Royal Palace, which is a beautiful exponent of the 18 th Century and is one of the best preserved in Europe. The palace constitutes one of the most beautiful distinctions of the royal residence style, their permanence symbol-making firm Madrid as the political capital of the Kingdom, in which the brightest official receptions of the Crown take place. It is also where audiences, Gala Dinners, signature of important agreements and the very traditional ceremony of Credential Letters from Foreign Ambassadors to His Majesty take place. Lunch is on your own and the afternoon is free. Explore more of Madrid or enjoy the hotel and all it has to offer. This evening, join Sanjay Goel for our Farewell to Madrid with Dinner followed by a fiery Flamenco Show at the most famous Spanish Tablao : El Corral de la Moreira. October 29, 2018 Madrid - Barcelona Breakfast After breakfast, depart by motorcoach to the Atocha Railway station to board the AVE (Spain s High Speed Train) for the 2.45 hour trip to Barcelona in First Class (snacks/beverages available for purchase). Upon arrival to Barcelona, you will be transferred to the port of Barcelona to embark on the Seven Seas Explorer for your Canary Islands Voyage. Lunch will be onboard.
