Fairview began as an agricultural service centre. Carving a niche for itself between the city of Grande Prairie to the south and the town of Peace River to the northeast, Fairview evolved as an important regional centre for education, government, health sector and resource sector services. The M.D. of Fairview No. 136 is host to the beautiful Historic Dunvegan Provinicial Park and Dunvegan bridge which spans the Peace River Valley. 7 Fairview is located at the junction of Highways 2, 64A and 732. It is a crossroads for travelers to Peace River, Manning, High Level, Ft. Vermilion and Yellowknife; to Hines Creek, Worsley and Ft. St. John; and to Rycroft, Sexsmith, Grande Prairie and beyond. The Municipal District of Fairview No. 136 is predominantly farming area surrounding the Town of Fairview. There are two hamlets within the jurisdiction, Whitelaw and Bluesky. Located in the beautiful Peace River region of northwestern Alberta, the Municipal District of Fairview No. 136 offers breath-taking scenery and the Historic Dunvegan Provincial Park. 12 RCMP Centennial Collaboration Museum Located in downtown Fairview, and originally a RCMP residence, the Fairview RCMP Centennial Museum depicts a typical home from the 1920s era. With displays on the main and upper floor, basement and porch, this museum is literally filled with artifacts, displays, and photos that capture and preserve the history of Fairview and the surrounding area. Open by appointment only, no admission fee - donations accepted. Fairv iew Pio n eer Mu s eu m This ten acre parcel of land just north of Fairview will eventually become a town site, complete with farm, oilfield, sawmill and demonstration areas. The artifacts are currently being displayed in the restored MacDonald School, while other historical buildings, which have been moved to the site from the surrounding area, undergo restoration. 13 The M.D. of Fairview #136 and committed volunteers are very pleased to have recognized the M.D.?s 100th Anniversary in 2014 by creating and placing commemorative signs at 22 historical rural school sites, 6 rural community halls and 5 cemeteries. H istoric Dunvegan Alberta is steeped in history of First Nations people, the fur trade and missionaries. Historic Dunvegan, a national historic site of Canada nestled in the stunning Peace River valley, brings that history to life. Four original, authentically-restored and furnished buildings are still located in the same places they were over 100 years ago, and historic interpreters are waiting to share the stories that helped shape the province we know today. THE LOCAL COLLEGE, GPRC, HAS A SMALL FISHING POND THAT IS STOCKED WITH RAINBOW TROUT (500 PER YEAR), THE TOWN WATER RESERVOIRS HAVE AN OVER-ABUNDANCE OF PERCH AND SUMMER FISHING IS ALLOWED THERE. THE MIGHTY PEACE RIVER WHICH ORIGINATES IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS IS KNOWN FOR MANY DIFFERENT SPECIES OF FISH SUCH AS PIKE AND WALLEYE. DUNVEGAN CAMPGROUND and MAPLES DAY USE AREA is located in a beautiful river valley and is packed full of adventure offering full service campground lots, hiking and biking trails, play areas, horseshoe pits, cook house shelters and is conveniently located next to a historic site, mini golf, greenhouse, gift shop and much more. This location truly has it all! PRATT'S LANDING Located on the shores of the Peace River, upstream from Historic Dunvegan this spot provides a unique camping experience. To access this wilderness park you have to travel on secondary highway 682 West of the Town of Fairview for approximately 32 km?s. There are overnight sites equipped with fire pits and picnic tables, an overnight group use area, day use areas, a children?s playground, fishing and horse shoe pits. Located right next to the mighty Peace River including a boat launch makes this an excellent stop while river boating! CUMMINGS LAKE RECREATION AREA is two km's north of Fairview on highway 732. It offers a tranquil lake with campground, group camping, baseball diamonds, horseshoe pits, playground and the picturesque Cummings Lake trail. This 11 km trail extends throughout town, country, golf course, wetlands, boreal forest, play fields, campground picnic areas and a historic museum site. The pools have multiple water features including river jets and fountain canes. The facility also has a 150 foot water slide - the biggest in the Peace Country, a Tarzan rope, sky walker hanging monkey bar climber, rock climbing wall and a 20 person hot tub with wheelchair access ramp. This newly renovated arena is open for family, and public open skate. The Fairview Curling Club ( also operates in the same location. Located directly south of the Fairplex Arena, in Bluesky and Whitelaw are outdoor ice skating surfaces which are perfect for a casual pick up game of shinny, or an afternoon skate with the family (don't forget the hot chocolate!).
