13 Nick Ryan - Chair of Judges Thrown out of university in Adelaide and moving to Sydney, Nick Ryan used the knowledge he d gained raiding his old man s cellar to land a job with one of Sydney s leading wine merchants. Realising that writing about it was easier than lifting it has led him to where he is now. He s the Wine Columnist for The Australian newspaper and Wine Business Monthly, writes regularly for GQ and Gourmet Traveller Wine and pens a surprisingly popular weekly column musing on life for Adelaide s Sunday Mail. Nick has judged in many Australian and international wine shows and is a graduate of the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial. He is excited by wines that are just as interesting by the fourth glass as they are at the first and would give it all up to play one game for the Port Adelaide Football Club. Joe Czerwinski International Judge Joe grew up in New York s Finger Lakes and can remember visiting local wineries with his parents, but did not catch the wine bug until he went to away to university. After graduating with degrees in Anthropology and Geography and a brief stint in a Manhattan wine shop, he got a job in magazine publishing. From 1999 through mid- 2017, Joe moved through a succession of staff positions at Wine Enthusiast, ending as managing editor. He joined Robert Parker Wine Advocate in July 2017.Joe took part in the latest edition of Penfolds Rewards of Patience, and followed that up with a complete vertical of Henschke s Hill of Grace. He has spoken at the Margaret River Gourmet Escape and Mornington Peninsula International Pinot Noir Celebration. Joe lives in the New York City suburbs with his wife and two children. His hobbies include ice hockey he s played since he was five years old and fly fishing, a more recently acquired passion. Charlie Seppelt Joined the Seppeltsfield Group in late 2017 as Winemaker/Manager of Ryecroft Wines in McLaren Vale, previously Winemaker at Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard completing his 28 th vintage this year. 14 Jonathon Brook (Associate Judge) After working the in Hospitality and Tourism Industries for many years, Jonathan got the wine bug hard. He has been working as a sommelier for the past 7 years and worked at many of Adelaide s top fine dining restaurants. He is currently working as the Sommelier at Bistro Blackwood, after returning to work for Jock Zonfrillo at the end of last year. Jonathan has completed his WSET Level 3 and is currently on a break from completing the WSET Diploma. When not studying' wine in his spare time he likes to watch the might Adelaide Football Club. Melanie Hollick (Associate Judge) Mel s first exposure to the wine industry was as a child growing up on her parent s property, Hollick Wines in Coonawarra. She has since enjoyed over 19 years experience working within the global wine industry. Mel has worked in wine on three continents. She commenced her wine industry career in packaging and then worked in Sales and Marketing in Melbourne and London for 7 years, where she ended up the Brand Manager for the Regional Wines portfolio for Fosters Wine Estates UK and Europe. Mel moved back home as Sales and Marketing Manager and part of the Hollick Wines senior management team in After 6 years in this role, and a couple of vintages, Mel then decided she wanted to get more involved with the production side of the industry and completed a Masters of Oenology in 2014 after completing the 2013 vintage in Napa. In 2015, Mel moved to Langhorne Creek as the Sales and Marketing Manager for Bleasdale. Mel now works part time in Sales and Marketing for Kimbolton Wines, whilst managing their family Olive Grove in Currency Creek, and completing vintage 2018 in Coonawarra.
