4 TRANSPORT JOURNEY Getting here Marlborough is centrally located within New Zealand at the top of the South Island and is easily accessed by air, land and sea. By air Flights land at Marlborough Airport, 7km from the centre of Blenheim. The 10 minute drive into Blenheim can be taken by taxi, shuttle or rental car. By road Charge your camera for photo opportunities along your road journey to Marlborough from Christchurch, Nelson and the West Coast. Bus services also operate into and out of Marlborough. By sea The 3 hour ferry trip from Wellington with Bluebridge or Interislander arrives at the port town of Picton. Cruise or kayak your way through the sheltered waters, home to dolphins, whales, seals and seabirds. Walk or cycle over bush clad ridgelines of the 70km Queen Charlotte Track starting at Ship Cove, Captain Cook s favourite New Zealand landing site. Blenheim Blenheim is the region s main centre. Located along the picturesque Taylor, Opawa and Wairau Rivers, and across to the walking and mountain biking trails of the Wither Hills, the town has a range of great cafes, restaurants and shops. Blenheim is home to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre a world-renowned collection of rare WWI and WWII aircraft and memorabilia. Picton Picton is a buzzing harbour town full of cafes, restaurants, galleries, speciality shops, and activities. From the foreshore, discover the rich maritime history and eco experiences at museums, wildlife sanctuaries and conservation centres. Picton is a great base for exploring the Marlborough Sounds and the surrounding walking and cycling trails. Havelock The Greenshell mussel capital of the world. Havelock is the access point for the Keneperu, Pelorus and Mahau Sounds. A short drive down the road is where the dwarves barrel run scene from The Hobbit was filmed and The Desolation of Smaug was filmed at nearby Pelorus Bridge. Renwick Renwick is surrounded by vineyards growing Marlborough s worldfamous wines, with over 20 winery cellar doors within a 5km radius of the village. Explore our wine country by bike, car or tour van, and discover what makes Marlborough s wine so special. Awatere and the Pacific Coast Driving along the golden hills, pink solar salt ponds and vineyards of the Awatere Valley, you ll find snow-capped mountains to one side and the blue Pacific on the other. The valley rises to the region s highest peak, Mount Tapuae-ouenuku, central to Māori legend the tip of the Southern Alps. 9 WINE AND FOOD Brilliant highlights Wine and food is a key attraction for visitors to Marlborough, and with more than 150 wineries responsible for 86% of New Zealand s total wine production as well as great restaurants, boutique food producers, and amazing seafood, it s easy to see why. Stretching between the Richmond Ranges and Wairau Plains is New Zealand s largest wine growing region, specialising in Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Our long-ripening season also produces superb Methode Traditionalle, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Visitors can enjoy over 35 cellar doors featuring well-known international wine brands as well as small boutique family producers. We are home to a boutique brewery creating beer to complement Marlborough s gourmet cuisine. Exploring these delights can easily be done by private car, coach or bike. Pick up or download a wine trail map from the local i-site or join a guided tour. Our region is known for the abundance of produce such as cherries, strawberries and apricots as well as quality herbs and vegetables available for purchase at the farmers gate or at the Sunday Farmers Market held every Sunday. The Marlborough Sounds provides succulent seafood: scallops, crayfish, Greenshell Mussels, oysters, King Salmon all in plentiful supply and featured on many local cafés and restaurant menus. Fine wine and beer demands superb food and Marlborough serves in style with an eclectic mix of restaurants and cafes. 10 MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS Brilliant highlights At the top of the South Island, the Marlborough Sounds is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, scenic tours and nature visits. Made up of four distinctively different Sounds Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru, Pelorus, and Mahau, The Marlborough Sounds makes up 1,500km of New Zealand s coastline. The winding waterways and sheltered bays of the Marlborough Sounds make for great boating, fishing and diving. Cruise or kayak from the main seaside town of Picton in the Queen Charlotte Sound, or Havelock in the Pelorus Sound, and take in the beautiful scenery. Charter your own boat or join a guided tour, such as the world famous mail boat cruises which delivers the mail and crucial supplies to those who live in beautiful remote places. Combine a memorable deep sea fishing experience with a dive at the Mikhail Lermontov, one of the largest diving wrecks in the world. Or escape to one of the many luxury lodges in the Sounds that can only be accessed by boat or helicopter. The Marlborough Sounds provides the perfect environment for seafood to be farmed and harvested in the cold, deep, pristine waters. Greenshell Mussel farming is the largest segment of the aquaculture industry in Marlborough, with more than 70% of the country s export production coming from the region. 75% of New Zealand s production of farmed King or Chinook salmon are also harvested from farms within the Marlborough Sounds. Visitors to the region can visit the seafood farms on organised tours, and can sample the local delicacies matched to a glass of award winning Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The iconic Queen Charlotte Track is located within the Marlborough Sounds and can be explored by foot, mountain bike or sea kayakover one or several days. The 70km track passes through a wide range of landscapes from historic Ship Cove through to Anakiwa, including lush forest, historic bays and skyline ridges. Accommodation along the track is plentiful, ranging from back-packers to high end lodges and all transfers and luggage are under-taken by water-taxi. Cruise the secluded bays of the Marlborough Sounds by charter boat or kayak. Swim with the dolphins in their natural environment and learn more about their quirky ways. Feast on Marlborough King Salmon and Greenshell Mussels matched with a glass of the latest vintage Sauvignon Blanc. 11 NATURE Brilliant highlights The Marlborough Sounds is home to a range of New Zealand native wildlife living on predator-free islands. Follow the eco trail or discover underwater life aboard the Underwater Observatory at Lochmara Lodge. These include the King Shag, tuatara, gecko, kiwi, saddleback, native pigeons and yellow-crowned parakeets (kakariki). The surrounding seas hold dolphins, stingrays, seals, little blue penguins and even orca on their seasonal migration. There are a number of wildlife-focused tours available through the spectacular Marlborough Sounds. Knowledgeable skippers and guides share interesting facts and local information, and they point out any sightings of dolphins, fur seals and seabirds en route. Several nature cruises visit Motuara Island, one of four reserve islands in the Queen Charlotte Sounds uninhabited by humans. Visitors can walk to the top of the island, via penguin nesting boxes, curious robins and fantails, gaining glimpses of saddlebacks, tui and kakariki along the way. The community-run Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary, a mainland sanctuary just a few minutes by boat from Picton, is also worth a visit for nature lovers. Here you will see native birds such as fantail, kereru, weka, silvereye, grey warbler, tui, bellbird, and kingfisher. Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, (Te Hoiere), is home to one of the last remaining populations of bats in Marlborough. A small population of long-tailed bats roost in the large forest around the bridge and camp site. Pelorus Bridge is also one of the last remaining stands of lowland podocarp forests in Marlborough, a fragment of the primeval forest that cloaked much of the lowlands of the region prior to European arrival. Walk, kayak or enjoy a 4WD tour around the historic Wairau Lagoon, spotting more than 90 bird species nesting at New Zealand s oldest discovered site of occupation. This shallow estuarine waterway of channels, sand spits and islands covers about 2,400 hectares. The islands are low and flat, ideal for nesting birds such as swan, black-backed gull and royal spoonbill. Take a boat cruise out to uninhabited Motuara Island, one of four reserve islands in The Sounds uninhabited by humans. Kayak the tranquil waters of the Wairau Lagoon, exploring the waterways and spot some of the more than 90 species of nesting birds. Explore the Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve and take a swim or kayak in crystal clear waters. Visit Long Island Marine Reserve snorkel or dive to get the best views of local marine life. 9

12 WALKS Brilliant highlights Marlborough offers a spectacular array of walking tracks with stunning scenery and views of the region. Whether it s a short walk through the Wither Hills farm land, or a multi-day tramp along the Nydia Track, new Link Pathway or Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds, Marlborough has a walk to suit all ages and fitness levels. The Queen Charlotte Track stretches from historic Ship Cove to Anakiwa and runs almost the entire length of the Queen Charlotte Sound. The 70 kilometres (45 miles) of spectacular walking track passes through historic sites, secluded bays, skyline ridges and coastal bush. The Queen Charlotte Track can be walked all year round with the most popular season being from November to May. The track is suitable for walkers of all ages with a moderate level of fitness. Both freedom and guided walking options are available and both allow you to have your packs carried for you from any of the access points along the track by arrangement with transport operators. Most sections of the track can be accessed by water taxi transfer allowing travellers to do a day walk if time is short. Local operators provide half and full day options through to multi-day packages offering walking, mountain biking and sea kayaking combinations including accommodation and water transfers. Strategically placed throughout the 70km length of track is a range of accommodation including Department of Conservation campsites, backpackers, homestays, hotels and resorts. The 70km long Queen Charlotte Track Marlborough s most famous track known for it s stunning views and contrasting landscapes.. Nydia Track in the Pelorus Sound - 27 km of lush coastal and regenerated forest and farmland. Wither Hills Farm Park 1100 hectares of rolling hill country has walking and biking choices from a gentle stroll to adrenalin-charged downhill bike trails. Link Pathway parts of the track are open for easy walking and entry level mountain biking start from Havelock. The Richmond Ranges has a range of choices from a 90 minute stroll to more serious tramping options. 10

14 CYCLING Brilliant highlights The Marlborough region has a strong network of on-road and off-road cycling tracks catering for all abilities. Mountain bike the Queen Charlotte Track, cycle the Wither Hills or ride between the many vineyards while taking in the stunning Marlborough scenery. The 70km Queen Charlotte Track is recognised as a Great Ride in the New Zealand Cycle Trails network and a DOC Manaaki Trail. Purpose built, it s the longest continuous track in the country and suitable for intermediate to experienced mountain bikers. The track is open for mountain biking from March-November. The Link Pathway is being developed for easy to intermediate level mountain biking. A 7km route is now open from Havelock. Eventually the Link Pathway will travel along the shoreline to Picton. The Molesworth Muster Trail runs through Molesworth Station the largest and most remote working farm in New Zealand. The 207 kilometre journey from Blenheim to Hanmer Springs follows the Awatere River, crosses Ward Pass to follow the Acheron River to join the Clarence. This is an unforgettable journey through spectacular scenery and wide-open landscape, with camp sites along the way. Closer to Blenheim, the Wither Hills Farm Park features 1100 hectares of rolling hill country and is home to numerous tracks for mountain bikers with excellent views of Blenheim and beyond. Or for something a little different, explore Marlborough s many cellar doors by bike. Enjoy cycling along the rural roads through superb countryside, stopping along the way to experience a wine tasting or vineyard lunch. Marlborough is also home to the South Island s biggest and most popular recreational road cycling event in April the Forrest GrapeRide. The classic course traverses a 101km or 42km circuit through some of the most stunning scenery New Zealand has to offer. Pedal through the vineyards and stopping off at one of Marlborough s many cellar doors. Bike the many trails of the Wither Hills Farm Park or try out the new section of the Link Pathway starting in Havelock. Mountain bike the 70 km Queen Charlotte Track, a Great Ride in the New Zealand Cycle Trails Network this can be guided or unguided. Cycle through the expansive Molesworth Station from Blenheim to Hanmer Springs (seasonal availability). Cycle the Nydia Track a challenging mountain bike track passing through lush coastal forest, with superb views of the Pelorus Sound. 12

15 FAMILY FUN Brilliant highlights Marlborough is the perfect destination for families, whether you want to swim, fish, boat, beach, explore, walk or bike. Swim in the crystal clear Pelorus River or dive into the surf at Whites Bay. Fish from a wharf, boat or beach, spot dolphins, seals and little blue penguins in the Marlborough Sounds, walk among endangered wildlife on island sanctuaries, or explore Marlborough s passion for aviation, on the ground or in the air. The living history of aircraft can be explored at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre near Blenheim, where the exhibits have been designed by the creative teams behind The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. To get there, jump aboard Blenheim s Riverside Railway and enjoy the ride along the picturesque Taylor River. Get up close to native tuatara and see little blue penguins and fish from the Marlborough Sounds at EcoWorld Picton Aquarium. Or go swimming with dolphins, and learn about all the marine wildlife you see along the way. On return to Picton, enjoy the picturesque foreshore with mini golf, children s playground and marina. Mountain biking is another great activity for families with the vast array of cycle tracks in the region. Ride an undulating circuit at the Rarangi Pump Track or fun forest trails at Conders Bend, or hit the trails in the Wither Hills Mountain Bike Park. Visit White s Bay for sun, sand, surf and swimming, as well as walking tracks through native bush, or swim or canoe down the Pelorus River, the beautiful location of the barrel run scene from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Learn the stories behind aviation at Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre brought to life by amazing sets created by Weta Workshop. Fish in the Marlborough Sounds from the Wharf, a boat or a beach or canoe and swim down the Pelorus River. Mountain bike at Conders Bend, Wither Hills or part of the Link Pathway. Visit the marine museums in Picton or play at Pollard Park or Brayshaw Historic Park in Blenheim. Feed a stingray or go under the sea to discover the marine life aboard the Underwater observatory at Lochmara Lodge. 13

20 Nature Lovers DAY 1 Marlborough Sounds Explore Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary, a community project to create a safe haven for wildlife on a peninsula of land near Picton. The Sanctuary is a short boat trip from Picton and getting there is easy with Beachcomber Cruises. Enjoy looking and listening for native birds while walking the 2.8 km track around the sanctuary. Look out for fantail, kereru, weka, silvereye, grey warbler, tui, bellbird, and kingfisher, and shorebirds around the rocky coastline. In the afternoon join the E-Ko Tours cruise to Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary where you will enjoy a conservation focused, wildlife adventure. Explore Marlborough s natural beauty and huge variety of bird and marine life Beachcomber Cruises DAY 2 Wairau Lagoon and Pelorus Bridge Today kayak or walk the historic Wairau Lagoon, spotting more than 90 bird species nesting at New Zealand s oldest discovered site of occupation. This shallow estuarine waterway of channels, sand spits and islands covers about 2,400 hectares. The islands are low and flat, ideal for nesting birds such as swan, black-backed gull and royal spoonbill. In the afternoon take a drive out towards Havelock and visit the Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, home to the last remaining population of bats in Marlborough and one of the only lowland podocarp forests in the region. One of Marlborough s top visitor attractions the Knights of the Sky, occupies some 3,000 sqm of purpose-built display area. It comprises one of the world s largest collections of World War One (WWI) aircraft and rare memorabilia, including a mix of dramatically staged wartime scenes along with flyable aeroplanes. The WWI collection is on long-term loan from film director Sir Peter Jackson. Thanks to Sir Peter s generosity, the aircraft have been brought to life in a series of dioramas created by Wingnut Films and enhanced with lifelike mannequins by Weta Workshop. Dangerous Skies the newest exhibition features stories from World War Two (WWII). Half of the aircraft featured in this exhibition are flyable and include a Yak-3, a Griffon powered Mk.XIVe Spitfire and the world s only flyable Avro Anson Mk1. Women feature more prominently in this exhibition. Russia s Lydia Litvyak or the White Lily of Stalingrad was the top scoring female ace and has been brought to life with a hauntingly life-like mannequin fashioned by the cinematic geniuses at Weta A highlight of the WWII exhibition is the inclusion of stories from the Eastern Front and more specifically, the Battle of Stalingrad, a military engagement that saw terrible losses for both Russia and Germany. This section of the exhibition is comprised of memorabilia and an immersive film experience that is both entertaining and chillingly thought provoking. Omaka Aerodrome, where the museum is located, is an all-over grass airfield and is home to some of the country s leading aviation businesses. Visitors can view the comings and goings of various aircraft or better yet take a joy flight in an open cockpit vintage Boeing Stearman or a Yak3 fighter.
