2 Recent Press & What s New 91 Editor s Choice Sparkling Grenache 2014 Brut Rosé 2014 Brut Cuvée Santa Barbara County Inspired by co-winemaker Eli Parker s trips to Australia, this is simply a fun and tasty sparkling red, with rose, clove, black plum, and graphite notes on the nose. Ripe berry flavors round out the palate, but tangy plum skins and a slate-driven mineral tension keep it serious. This is the second vintage of sparkling wine production for winemaker Blair Fox but the first he s controlled from start to finish, and the early results are exciting. Zesty lime, graphite and raspberry scentslead the nose, while red plum, pomegranateand citrus flavors converge. It s full and foamy on the palate. This blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from the Fess Parker team offers lemon blossom, baking soda and lime zest aromas on the light and flowery nose. Broad flavors of yellow apple and pear meet with a citrus twist on the finish. Happy Birthday! Marcy Parker recently celebrated her birthday with the entire Parker clan. And our 2013 Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir is a hit with Canadian critics as well! 92/ A rich, berry-ripe Californian Pinot Noir from the Santa Barbara region, where the movie Sideways was made. Silky satin texture. Juicy ripe strawberry aromas and flavours. Medium-bodied and smooth. This family has made wine since Pair with grilled chicken. This terrific pinot delivers right across the board. It s fruit-driven but the fruit has very good structure, and the flavours show very good breadth and depth. The fruit sits in balance with the well-tuned acid, and the tannins are fine, ripe, drying and well integrated. It s aged 12 months in French barrels (33% new) and that treatment has been managed sensitively. At over 14%, the alcohol looks high, but it s imperceptible on nose and palate. P.O. 3 The World of Parker Carly Conley The Garden Fairy W e as a family have been fortunate to be able to enjoy the beauty of the home ranch on Foxen Canyon since Fess bought the property in It s just now, however, that we are starting to really put the 714 acres to work for us. The Wagyu herd is grazing, the 110-acre vineyard will be producing another harvest before too long, and now we have a farming operation to support our new restaurant, The Bear and Star. The talent behind this farming endeavor is 26-year-old Carly Conley, also known as the Garden Fairy to her friends in Big Sur. Growing up she spent a lot of time working with her landscaper father, learning the finer points of gardening. Carly attended Pacific Grove High School and Monterey Peninsula College. After flirting with a career in the legal field, she followed her heart and completed the Agricultural and Land Based Training Association program (ALBA) and began her career as a horticulturalist. Carly showing off her green thumb in the garden with a first round of veggies Carly lives on the ranch and is currently overseeing the planting of the fruit tree orchard (featuring six different types of apple trees, pear, apricot, fig and pomegranate trees). She is also setting up her own apiary (also known as a bee yard) and planting lots of edible flowers to keep said bees happy and busy. Carly also looks after the coops full of quail, several types of chickens including her favorites Rhode Island Red, Wyandotte and Ameraucana as well as our California rabbits and Mangalica pigs. It s obvious that she has a lot more than a green Our first quail egg! thumb going for her. Carly is also a prolific artist who paints, weaves, and keeps true to a lot of the rituals of her ancestors. It is a terrific thing to have someone working on the ranch who has so much respect for the potential and beauty of the natural surroundings. The synergy between what we raise on the ranch and what is served at The Bear and Star will most certainly differentiate us from the farm to table set, and we re excited to share it all with you. Our efforts to create a super-sustainable farming operation took a bit of a wrong turn when, a few weeks after Carly s arrival, the Wagyu herd ate most of the blueberries, leeks, radishes and strawberries that she had planted. 4 Head Winemaker What a beautiful wet and rainy winter we have had! We have not had rainfall like this for at least six years, and boy did it come in the nick of time. The hills are green, the creeks are flowing, the reservoirs are filling and the soil profile is saturated with rainwater, which is always a good thing Blair Fox coming into spring. With all of this moisture we are hoping for a prolific crop of grapes with high quality! The only thing we need to avoid are the potential spring frosts! This is the time of the year where the little tender green shoots are emerging from their buds with this year s fruit and leaves. Frost is when the temperatures drop below freezing and damage this new growth. Our only defenses are wind machines, which circulate the warmer air, or sprinklers that freeze ice around the new growth protecting it at 32 degrees. We always have to cross our fingers at this time of the year and hope for the best! We have been extremely busy in the winery, bottling the new 2016 Rieslings, Rosés and 2015 reserve Pinots. Next up to bat is the 2016 Santa Barbara County Chardonnay, 2016 Parker Station Pinot Noir and the new lot of Frontier Red. We are also going to be bottling the 2016 Fesstivity sparkling wines for secondary fermentation and let them rest en tirage for a year or longer until they are disgorged and released.
