UNITED WAY OF ACADIANA 2016 ANNUAL REPORT United Way of Acadiana
Dear Acadiana, There s no disputing that our Acadiana communities were challenged in Fortunately, tough roads can lead to beautiful destinations. Right there with us on our paths is United Way of Acadiana: unwavering in its mission, energized by donors, staff and volunteers, delivering support where most needed, and especially responsive during the Great Flood of August and in the months of recovery that followed. It s our United Way-focus on making a difference longterm that helps students succeed, families become stronger, and communities come out of crisis. That s because UWA connects the right resources with the right people, year-round, to get things done. We re an organization who in partnership with corporations, non-profits and faithbased and governmental entities stays the course to yield results where they matter most. Some 42 United Way-funded programs within 24 partner agencies are helping 115,902 people in Acadiana. As we made clear in 2016, we can mobilize resources in times of crisis to help the region weather tough times. In fact, during the flood and its immediate aftermath, more than $2,000,000 in donated goods and direct services were provided to over 33,000 individuals in Acadiana. It s our commitment to the needy on so many fronts. Together, we re helping students graduate on time and prepare for college and careers. We re assisting families in creating financial stability by saving more. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, our volunteers helped Acadiana residents receive $4,766,769 in total refunds used to pay their bills, repair their homes or further their education. cover photo courtesy of The Daily Advertiser Thanks to United Way of Acadiana, The Leader in Me program continues to be a bright spot in education throughout the region. Disciplinary issues are fewer; grades and attendance records are up for 21,000 students in 35 public schools across Acadiana; and Leader in Me students are learning and modeling 21stcentury life skills. Children enrolled in UWA s Early Head Start are 89 percent more likely to be ready for kindergarten and score higher than national average in every developmental area by as much as 37 percent. Because of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library free book program, 21,371 children in the region have access to books at home 10,000 of them starting kindergarten with stronger language skills. Thanks, again, to each of you who answered the call of our neighbors in We ve still more work to do:: - 36 percent of families in our region are living paycheck to paycheck percent of our kindergarten students are not school-ready. - months after the flood, 1,000 families did not have the means to repair their flooddamaged homes. - 1 in 7 individuals, or 57,000 people in our communities, go to bed hungry. Join us as we continue to work together to make Acadiana a better place for all of its residents. DONNA LANDRY United Way of Acadiana Board Chair
OUR VISION To unite people and organizations with passion, expertise and resources to create more opportunities for a better life. OUR MISSION An educated, prosperous and safe Acadiana where all individuals and families achieve their potential. OUR CREDO We fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community.
Making a difference For JPMorgan Chase, it s about giving individuals and families a strong financial future. ANGELA COLE senior vice-president, JPMorgan Chase We are only as financially as strong as our poorest community members, said Angela Cole, senior vicepresident at JPMorgan Chase. For JPMorgan Chase, it s about giving individuals and families a strong financial future. Cole along with JPMorgan Chase managing director Ed Hebert are both part of the initiatives facilitated by United Way of Acadiana that impact the earnings of those in Acadiana who are often most financially vulnerable. Through programs like IMS (the Incentive Match Program) and VITA aimed at tackling issues from credit recovery to tax returns, JPMorgan Chase is a partner in collaborating to give the people of Acadiana a brighter financial future and to EARN SAVE SUCCEED. It was IMS in particular (a program in which dollars are matched $1 for every $2 saved up to $4,000) that spoke to Hebert. I was tremendously impressed by how many bright, wonderful people have perseverance to be involved with the program, Hebert said. They are people like Nicole Norse who now sees savings as a part of her future no matter what and like Lola Cook who says there s no going back after she saved $2,000 for work on her home. We want to teach people how to save and how to be prosperous, Cole said.
Alexis de Toqueville Society: Giving smart There s giving. Then there s giving smart. Rob Eddy knows the difference. And he wants you to as well. Beneath his quiet, calm demeanor beats the heart of a true community champion, dedicated servant leader and strategic thinker. He s been involved with United Way of Acadiana for more than 25 years. Why? I really like the collaborative approach of UWA, its proven results and professional staff. United Way is one of the organizations that I consider as essential to community and a good quality of life. UWA reaches beyond the symptoms and addresses root causes of systemic issues. When he took on the role of United Way of Acadiana Campaign Chair in 2015, he made it his cause to revitalize UWA s Alexis de Tocqueville Society of $10,000+ donors. It s a cause that he still leads today, having grown this group by 60 percent. And he s not done yet. Like John Torian in the early 1980s who established the $1,000 floor for what is today called Leadership Giving, Eddy has made it his personal mission to bring together major donors for catalytic philanthropy through United Way of Acadiana. I have an immense appreciation for people who are so passionate and generous with their time and resources and the fact that it matters, Eddy said. It facilitates a significant positive difference at scale. Driven by his own desire to make meaningful charitable investments, Eddy has had dozens of conversations with individuals and families who have significant resources to contribute yet are trying to determine the right way to go about it. The answers lie in the questions we ask ourselves and in collaboration, he said. This was the impetus behind a recent Philanthropy Summit that he organized to discuss the challenges of making philanthropy count. And as a parting gift, everyone received a copy of Giving Smart, a book he says provides a great framework for philanthropic decisionmaking. If you want your philanthropy to be useful changing lives, solving intractable problems, making society work better then engage deeply with this book agrees Jim Collins of Good to Great fame. Eddy has led the UWA Lighthouse Campaign to tap others to invest with him in providing the tools for a cultural transformation of public schools through The Leader in Me. Many of these investors have joined the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, a special order of recognition that is international in scope. It honors voluntary community service and philanthropy. It is named after de Tocqueville because of his 18th-century writings which noted the generosity of Americans in voluntarily helping their neighbors and doing so quite spontaneously. Philanthropy is not just writing a check. It s being engaged and trying to solve problems and seek solutions. That s what de Tocqueville really represents. It really started with service for me. ROB EDDY, owner, The Pinnacle Group
The Leader in Me: Building leaders During the school year alone, UWA has built the capacity for seven new schools to implement The Leader in Me system through various partnerships with 35 schools in the Acadiana area impacting approximately 21,000 students in grades PreK through 12. Each additional program has the capacity to change the lives of individual students and their families. And they are lessons Zhoriél says she is passing on to her two younger sisters lessons about setting good goals, seeking to listen first and synergizing. For example, Leah Tapo could never have envisioned the difference one school program could make in the life of her family. When her daughter, second grader Zhoriél, enrolled at Plantation Elementary, the whole Tapo family of five began to get an education about The Leader in Me. Other The Leader in Me regional highlights: I wasn t expecting the impact to be that big. I had no clue she would have the opportunities she s had, Leah said. It s been a confidence building experience for her and she shows new leadership skills at home and at school and out in public. She has really grown we talk about the Seven Habits a lot at home. Those habits are rattled off easily, yet thoughtfully, by a talkative and articulate Zhoriél. You can always think win-win and everyone can win, she said. I get to talk to the whole school at The Leader in Me rallies. The Leader in Me really teaches me. Zhoriél Tapo is not your average second grader and her mother credits The Leader in Me for powerfully impacting her daughter s future. Three schools in Acadia Parish continued implementation of The Leader in Me with PACT grants. Judice Middle School was recognized as a Lighthouse Leader in Me School. It is the first in Lafayette Parish and only the second middle school in the world to be recognized at this level. Martin Petitjean Elementary in Rayne, who helped lead the way for The Leader in Me across Acadiana, was one of six public schools in Louisiana to be recognized as a 2015 National Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence recipient.
Since The Leader in Me has been incorporated into our schools, our test scores have gone up and discipline problems have gone down. Thank you United Way. SARAH ALLEN principal, St. Martinville Primary
Early Head Start: Making a difference United Way of Acadiana EHS provides, at no cost to families, early childhood education and home-based child development services for qualifying families with infants and toddlers up to 3 years of age, as well as prenatal services for expecting women. During 2016, 112 children and/or pregnant women received services. Enrollment priorities include children with special needs, children in foster care, homeless families and teen parents. As a result of a grant received from the Office of Head Start through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-Administration for Children and Families, United Way of Acadiana provides EHS services to children in Lafayette Parish s 70501, 70503, 70506, zip codes and in Vermilion Parish. Both centers are Tier III licensed by the Louisiana Department of Education. 9 A game changer: Early Head Start Early Head Start has made a difference at home for both of them, my daughter especially. She went from being completely shy to outspoken and can explain herself. franchesca buchanan mother of two Early Head Start students Early Head Start is instrumental in laying the foundation for very young children to become school ready and successful later in life. When people refer to Early Head Start they may use the term free. But, the program, which United Way facilitates, is invaluable to parents like Franchesca Buchanan. Early Head Start has been a game changer in the lives of her two children and she believes will be for her third child who is on the way. I have two children and am pregnant. A few years ago I wanted to go back to work and needed somewhere for my kids to go and I was told about Early Head Start and I love it, she said. Early Head Start programs aim to make a difference before children are even born and offer an educational environment that is far beyond kids play or a daycare without curriculum. The assumption is that because of such low income at home there won t be the opportunities for children to have early educational services, said Margarette Derise of United Way of Acadiana, who facilitates the federally funded program locally. Early Head Start, however, ensures access for those who seek it.
Flood the Love With this help, my kids will feel more confident and they will have what their peers have. Alaina frederick mother of three in St. Martin Parish When Alaina Frederick and her family woke Saturday morning, August 13 and found the rain still coming down, they realized the water was rising. The water just started coming from nowhere, Frederick said. We left with the clothes on our backs. School had just started and all the new backpacks, notebooks, markers, uniforms for her three kids were gone. They moved in with friends and headed back to school, shellshocked. Our home was under water for two weeks, Frederick said. We lost everything. When she arrived at United Way of Acadiana to pick up backpacks and school supplies for her kids, Frederick broke into tears of gratitude. With this help, my kids will feel more confident and they will have what their peers have. Frederick and her family represent one of the thousands of families in Acadiana who stepped up for assistance from United Way of Acadiana during their time of need after the Great Flood of 2016.
When disaster strikes They took my info and before I knew it, they were delivering supplies and putting up sheetrock. DIANNA LEBLANC flood survivor in Erath Dianna LeBlanc of Erath is quick to give credit to United Way of Acadiana and its volunteers. She says they helped her save her home. Forty years ago, LeBlanc and her husband built their home. When he passed away six years ago, she was determined to stay. When the rains continued through the August weekend, LeBlanc got seven inches of water throughout her home and ten inches in her living room during the Great Flood of With no flood insurance, she didn t know where to turn. She called Our Savior s Church in Broussard who put her in touch with United Way of Acadiana. Volunteers from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and other states helped do the work at LeBlanc s home in Erath. They took my info and before I knew it, they were delivering supplies and putting up sheetrock, LeBlanc said. I have doors and other supplies coming in. When those supplies get here, they ll be putting that up to. I couldn t even explain how helpful that was, she said. They were so sweet and helpful. Thank God for them, that s what I say. PEOPLE At least 11,000 people served directly by UWA goods & services DONATED GOODS More than 200 trucks were sent from the United Way of Acadiana warehouse to deliver food, water, & supplies including: Over 50,000 bottles of water Over 12,000 meals Over 2,000 containers of baby formula Over 3,000 clean up kits More than 600,000 items were shipped from the United Way of Acadiana warehouse with the estimted value of goods exceeding $1,100,000 VOLUNTEER TIME More than 957 volunteers mobilized Over 3,800 volunteer hours logged VOLUNTEER MUD-OUTS Over 500 homes cleaned and gutted An additional 7,000 hours of volunteer time to complete mud-outs Estimated value of volunteer hours exceeds $100,000
Stuff the Bus: Outfitting the school year 85,127 SCHOOL SUPPLIES GENERATED FOR LOCAL TEACHERS AND STUDENTS The United Way of Acadiana Stuff the Bus school supply drive ensures that students enter school with the tools needed to be successful throughout the school year. In August 2016, individuals across Acadiana donated more than 85,000 school supplies, enough to serve 4,256 students. To help sort and pack these materials, 64 volunteers donated over 268 hours of service. UWA distributed these supplies throughout Acadia, Lafayette, St. Martin, and Vermilion parishes. Forty-two schools each received care packages containing school supplies for 25 students. An additional 300 backpack were filled with school supplies and given to after-school programs in Acadiana. 13 Day of Action: Connecting to communities It s not just about playing for the kids. It s about so much more. United Way of Acadiana helped our community heal and carry on. Through sports and activities, we are empowered. Sheila Landry Breaux Bridge Summer Sport Camp director In Breaux Bridge, United Way of Acadiana Day of Action takes on a special kind of meaning. At the Breaux Bridge Summer Sports Camp, Bianca Davis was both the director and the lady at the helm for Day of Action. Sadly, Davis died in a tragic accident just days before. Those left behind are carrying on the legacy of this Cecilia basketball star and Ragin Cajun. It s not just about playing for the kids, says director Sheila Landry. This camp will be carried on to honor Bianca Davis. Action, students also loaded up shoe boxes for the elderly and the homeless with necessities. It s an activity that opened the eyes of students and connected them in a new way to the community. They assembled boxes of hygiene products to go to shelters. It s teaching them to give back. One student said I can give this to my grandmother. She is homeless. It s helping them understand homelessness and understand who is homeless, said Deidra Lewis, the volunteer mobilization manager at United Way of Acadiana. In 2016, in addition to participating in physical activity like the UWA Day of
Classroom makeover: Encouraging teachers Our classroom makeover meant a lot. Frequently kids, and teachers, feel like they don t matter. This classroom makeover meant someone was paying attention and that is awesome. LYNN Mcpeek 7th-grade math teacher, Edgar Martin Middle School When United Way of Acadiana volunteers overhauled a 7th-grade math classroom, they did far more than change the paint color. They coated the classroom of Lynn McPeek with a hefty dose of encouragement. They painted, gave boxes of materials for each desk for students, a storage cabinet and items that mean I can be more organized. They purchased scholastic magazines that come once a month, and I m able to enrich my children s education, McPeek says. Our classroom makeover meant a lot. Frequently kids, and teachers, feel like they don t matter. This classroom makeover meant someone was paying attention and that is awesome. McPeek says teachers often face tough expectations and the classroom makeover truly is making a difference in the lives of her students. We can t fix everything in children, she says. But we can encourage them and United Way of Acadiana encouraged all of us.
United Way Readers: The program works Sometimes it s slow progress and sometimes it s substantial. But, there s always progress. sharane gott United Way Reader volunteer Sharane Gott will make you want to grab a book and head to your local school. The United Way of Acadiana volunteer is a busy woman serving as CEO of the local Better Business Bureau of Acadiana. But, she never misses her weekly time as a United Way Reader. Each week, more than 200 readers across Acadiana serve as listeners for 386 first and second grade students in 21 schools students who aren t hitting the mark on reading level. The one-on-one time to read to an adult helps improve reading for students, especially those intimidated to read in front of an audience of peers. There are few places one person can make a difference and this is one, Gott said. Sometimes it s slow progress and sometimes it s substantial. But, there s always progress. Gott says one thing is certain in her mind: The program works. And for far more than just reading. It s also their self esteem. I still remember in school who could read and who couldn t. The more they can read the better they feel about themselves and they carry that for the rest of their lives. It s something that Gott will carry for the rest of her life. Had somebody not taken care of me, I wouldn t be the person I am today. If you have the chance to do something that can change a life why would you not?
PACT United Grants change lives: Catholic Services assists ALICE ALICE stands for asset-limited, income constrained and employed. About 40 percent of Louisiana households struggle to make ends meet. PACT United Grants seek to make a difference in the lives of Acadiana residents, including those who are part of the ALICE population. When a mom like R.J. comes down with the flu, she risks far more than falling behind at work. She risks homelessness. She risks a house dark from unpaid electric bills. her take home pay is around $300 a week. She has unsubsidized rent, utility bills, a car payment and insurance, which leaves little for unexpected costs or a cut in income. When she came down with the flu, she missed ten days of work (she has no sick pay because she is part time at both jobs) and faced mounting electric bills. Her sister helped out with rent to ensure she didn t become homeless. But, the bills continued to mount Catholic Services of Acadiana was there to help. Missing a week from work or having a car break down can be the difference between living in your own home and living in the streets. We are grateful for our partnership with United Way of Acadiana because their PACT Essentials Grant helps provide resources to implement direct assistance and to avoid the consequences of living below the ALICE threshold. Sarah Clement director of development, Catholic Services of Acadiana R.J. is one of many living in Lafayette who are considered part of the ALICE population. Being ALICE means that although moms like R.J. are hardworking, they are one minor disaster or illness away from homelessness. Programs like the Msgr. Sigur Center at Catholic Services of Acadiana, which is supported in part via a PACT Essentials Grant from United Way of Acadiana, are making a difference in the lives of people like R.J. and in the prevention of homelessness. R.J. is 26 with three children and two jobs. She works at a fast food restaurant 30 hours a week during the day and provides personal care assistance for an elderly disabled man for 8 hours per night for three nights a week. She makes minimum wage, which means after taxes At Catholic Services of Acadiana we try to make sure that we are preventing people from ever having to experience the trauma of homelessness by providing emergency financial assistance to those in financial crisis, says Sarah Clement, director of development at Catholic Services of Acadiana. Missing a week from work or having a car break down can be the difference between living in your own home and living in the streets. We are grateful for our partnership with United Way of Acadiana because their PACT Essentials Grant helps provide resources to implement direct assistance and to avoid the consequences of living below the ALICE threshold.

Campaign Cabinet : Overcoming obstacles I knew this year would be an immense challenge even before taking over as Campaign Chair, but I didn t realize back then that it would be a transformative process for me. This year s campaign was deeply personal. We expected a shortfall because of the impact low oil prices were having on local businesses, mine included. What we didn t expect was the flood. It had a massive impact on giving, which is understandable, but the services United Way of Acadiana provided might be more important now than they ve ever been. scott domingue Campaign Cabinet Chair, president of Safety Mangement Systems at the Acadian Companies
