4 Lotus (Nelumbiums) The lotus will thrive as a perennial almost anywhere in Europe. Gardeners in northern and central regions should situate their lotus in full sun, and may extend the plant s flowering by growing them in above-ground containers (p. 32). Planting instructions Plant the lotus in a pot, more wide than deep, which ranges from 60L to 300L in volume so that this very vigorous plant has room to grow (see our planting containers on page 32). You may decide to plant your lotus in one of our 20L lotus pots, in which case the following spring you ll need to divide and replant the lotus or transfer the root ball to a more voluminous pot. Place the lotus pot under no more than cm of water and under no more than cm for miniature lotus. The rhizome should be placed on top of cm of clay-rich topsoil that has been amended with a good helping of slow-release fertiliser (see p. 34). Secure the rhizome (it will float otherwise) by gently placing a piece of rock or brick over the central section. Once the water hits 20 celsius the rhizome will grow down into Packing and delivery We ship lotus from late March to the end of April. Stock is limited, so it is recommended that you place your order before March 1. Your lotus will arrive just as it is emerging from dormancy, in bare root form as per the photo below. We only sell mature rhizomes, ones that should flower during the first season given adequate growing conditions. elunelumbiums - 3 Lotus rhizomes are very fragile, handle with care!

10 Tropical water lilies- 9 Tropical water lilies are considered annuals in most of Europe, and like most annuals they can be relied upon to deliver steady bursts of colour from June through October, much more so than hardies. They also bloom in show-stopping hues of blue, violet and crimson. Some are scented (N. caerulea, N. Pennsylvania ), filling the garden with the smell of hyacinth in July and August, and all make excellent cut flowers. Growing tropicals Plant tropicals one each in 14L or 20L containers filled with clayrich topsoil. Take care not to bury the crown of the plant, just the roots. Push six slow-release fertiliser tablets into the soil around the plant (see our accessories on p. 32) and place the pot under 20 to 30 cm of water in a very sunny spot. Some of our clients like the challenge of overwintering tropicals, and if you know what to do it s not so different from taking in dahlias. There are different techniques, but one method is to keep the plants fully exposed to daylight in water that remains between 15 and 18 celsius. This will push the plants into dormancy and force them to create corms (small bulbs). If you don t have a glasshouse of some kind put the pot in a waterfilled tub or bucket in a protected, luminous area and place an aquarium heater in it. In spring replant the bulbs in fresh soil with fertiliser. Keep them in the heated bucket until it s warm enough to put them in the pond, usually in May. N. Tina and N. Panama Pacific are relatively easy to get through the winter. Packing and delivery Tropicals are shipped from end of May to end of September, as weather permits. They are shipped in small pots (as per the photo below) or with small root balls in order to ease the transition to your pond and expedite flowering. 14 Intersubgeneric water lilies Horticultural innovation Hardy water lilies ISG - 13 Nymphaea Siam Purple 2 About intersubgenerics An intersubgeneric variety (or ISG) is the result of a cross between a hardy and a tropical water lily, plants from two different subgenera. ISG varieties are hardy - they ve kept the perennial feature of the hardy parent and the colour features of the tropical parent. Monsieur Latour-Marliac engaged in an intersubgeneric cross when he created the varieties we know so well today. He believed, as hybridisers always have, that this type of cross was the key to achieveing the blue hardy water lily. Due to the complexity of this kind of cross, it was not until 2004 that someone actually obtained a blue hardy variety in this way: the Thai, Pairat Songpanich, who created the intersubgeneric varieties at right.

Pygmaea Helvola, is a tiny canary yellow hardy with mottled pads created by Monsieur Latour-Marliac in Plant them in 5 to 10L pots under cm of water. Excellent for tub gardens and balconies. Featured: water lilies for filtration purify water naturally Two varieties are well suited for filtration: N. Col. A.J. Welch (at left) and N. France, a pink variety with cupshaped blooms. Each is very vigorous and tough, what you need for purifying polluted water.

16 Hardy water lilies - 15 Hardy Water Lilies The centrepiece of your pond Nymphaea Pink Sparkle (Strawn, 1998) Planting water lilies is easy! Plant the rhizome against the edge Nymphaea J.C.N. Forrestier (Latour-Marliac, c. 1930) Insert fertiliser tablets around the rhizome Water before submerging

17 Why hardy water lilies are essential Hardy water lilies - 16 Their beauty aside, hardy water lilies play an important role in the ecology of the pond. They absorb nutrients from the water and block the sun s UV rays, thereby preventing the development of algae and overheating of the pond. They also oxygenate the water and provide shelter to fish and amphibians., N. Black Princess is a variety created by the American hybridiser Perry Slocum. It was introduced in 1994 and remains one of the most sought after hardy varieties on the market today. In order to have an ecologically balanced pond you will need to ensure that a minimum surface is covered by lily pads. In general, one water lily planted in a 14L or 20L container will cover 1 metre of surface with pads. Here are some proportions that should be respected whenever possible: for a pond of 1 to 16 m 2 : 50% surface coverage, or 1 to 8 water lilies ; for a pond of 17 to 32 m 2 : 35% coverage, or 6 to 12 water lilies; above 32 m 2 : 25% coverage. Planting depths by size: miniature (mini): cm; small (S) and very small (XS): cm; medium (M): cm; large (L): cm; extra large (XL): cm Planting guide When your water lilies arrive they will be packed bare root, as in the photo at right. Plant one water lily per 14 or 20L pot under 10 to 120 cm of water depending on the variety, and whenever possible in full sun. Set the pot on rocks or bricks if necessary to achieve the correct depth. Use a clay-rich topsoil, and don t forget to add fertilizer - we recommend our starter formula followed by fertilizer tablets every spring thereafter (see accessories, p. 34). After 3 to 4 years you ll need to divide your water lilies, much like you would day lilies, hostas or iris. Plant the rhizome under a few centimetres of gently packed soil, with the crown exposed at the surface. Water before immerging in order to get the air out. Pads submerged on planting will grow to the surface and/or quickly be replaced by new pads.

27 Other aquatic plants Other aquatic plants - 26 While water lilies and lotus may be the stars of the water garden, no such garden is complete without a diverse selection of other aquatic plants. Emergent plants, ones that grow in the water, act as filters, absorbing nutrients from the water that would otherwise be used by algae to proliferate. Moisture-loving plants, ones that grow on the water s edge, prevent erosion of the banks, hide pond liner, and provide shelter to pond dwelling creatures. Submerged plants, like elodea, oxygenate the water, sustaining aquatic life forms and providing shelter for them. It is the ensemble that balances a pond. Prepare planting area, estimate number of plants needed: Planting a water garden is not so different from planting a typical perennial border. You want each plant to have its place, and to contribute visually to the garden as a whole. Depending on how you ve constructed your pond and the plants in question, you may be planting directly into soil that covers a liner or into pots. Here are a few rules of thumb to follow in all cases: 1) Use a clay-rich topsoil that will stay in the pot and/or not immediately run into the pond off the banks when it rains. 2) Plant in clumps of at least three, so that each plant has its place and makes an impact visually. 3) Plant densely so that desirable plants outgrow weeds. For many moisture-loving plants 10 units will be needed to fill a 1 M2 planting zone. Three emergent plants will suffice for a 14 or 20L planting container, and plan for three submerged oxygenating plants per M2. Packing and delivery: When aquatic plants arrive they will be in bare root form or with small root balls, depending on the plant. The size of the plants will depend in part on the date of shipment.

36 History of the colorful water lily hybrid Before founding his water lily nursery in 1875 Monsieur Latour-Marliac had developed a sophisticated method of creating colourful hardy water lily hybrids. There was a need for such hybrids since at the time the only hardy water lily growing in Europe was the indigenous white one, Nymphaea alba. Latour- Marliac developed a line of hardy water lilies that ran from yellow to fuschia to the deepest red. In 1889 he introduced them to the public at the Paris World s Fair. Exhibited in the water gardens in front of the Trocadéro, the colorful hybrids were a sensation and carried first prize in their category. They also attracted the eye of the Impressionist painter Claude Monet, who would place several water lily orders with Latour-Marliac for his pond at Giverny. These plants became the subject of over 200 of his paintings, including the series of murals, les Nymphéas, on permanent exhibition at the Musée de l Orangerie in Paris. On the cover : Nymphaea Sylphida (Latour-Marliac, 1912)
